Seminar to discuss effective nonprofit board development
N
onprofit boards are not, and should not be, static. To be effective, they must change and evolve as their organization changes and grows. The board maturing process is not inevitable, and organizations may develop differently or boards may stop at one stage or another—each board and its growth situation is unique. The Chamber’s Nonprofit Committee will host a complimentary seminar following the Contact Breakfast at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, November 15 at the
Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel & Conference Center. Thrivent Financial sponsors this seminar. “Building Your Nonprofit Board: How You Can Help Your Board to Work More Effectively will feature a panel of nonprofit staff and board members who have changed how their boards operate discussing the board evolution process and offering ideas to help move your nonprofit’s board forward to be as effective as possible. Boardnetusa.org, a board matching service, now managed
by Governance Matters, a subsidiary of the New York Council of Nonprofits (NYCON), will also be introduced. This service can be used to promote board member needs and matches nonprofits with potential board members. Registration is required. Visit dcrcoc.org or call (845) 454-1700, ext. 1000. Sponsored by

Small Business Saturday is a great time to Think Local First
I
t’s November, and that means the start of the holiday season is near. As you head to the stores to find what you need for your seasonal celebrations, please remember to Think Local First. Our Hudson Valley merchants have practically everything you could possibly want -- whether it’s gifts, décor, culinary creations, or that something special just for yourself. It might seem easier to handle your gift giving and other holiday festivities with a few swift clicks in cyberspace, but there might be something even more unique and special right here at a local shop. Best of all, when you shop local, you keep our local businesses in business, our local people employed and generate sales tax revenue – all of which benefit the local economy. This means local organizations, government, and the overall community thrives, grows stronger, and becomes more vibrant. That’s the principle behind Small Business Saturday, coming up this year on November 25th. The day after Black Friday,
Small Business Saturday is a great a time to support your local community. The Chamber has partnered with American Express in promoting Small Business Saturday every year since the campaign’s launch in 2010. Last year, shoppers reported spending more than $15.4 billion at independent retailers and restaurants. If you want to get involved, visit dcrcoc.org/shopsmall and sign up. We’ll share promotional materials and key information on how to get the most out of Small Business Saturday. To learn more about the national movement, visit ShopSmall. com. I invite you to get acquainted with local businesses and all they have to offer on Small Business Saturday—and every day this holiday season. This is another great way to Think Local First. Sincerely,
Frank M. Castella, Jr. President & CEO

When a friend and mother of three was diagnosed with colon cancer, Krista Jones’ immediate response was, “let me cook them dinner.” Night after night, the Hopewell

Taking her mission further, Jones founded Sparrow’s Nest in 2012, feeding four local families, and has fed close to 1,000 people since. Today, she serves as Executive Director. hoosing the proper devices for employees to be productive both in the office and in the field can be a struggle when there are so many to choose from on the market. You may need a variety of devices to be effective and efficient. For example, notebooks are a great
solution for office-based staff doing research or working in Word or Excel documents, while employees on the road who need to access specific applications and submit data back to the office might be better suited to a tablet. For users who primarily access cloudbased applications that require heavy Internet use, consider
Chromebook’s Plus or Pro models. Remember, since technology is always changing, if you’re struggle to find a device for a particular user, something new is probably just around the corner. A Town of Wappinger native, Jiava is now striving to make that difference by serving her hometown as Town Supervisor. Lori’s dedication to community service started as a young girl when she sent several letters to various presidents, urging them to act on things she felt were important such as poverty, drugs, and homelessness. As president of the Wappingers Central School District Board of Education, Lori had the opportunity to make the education system better for the students and help the staff improve their professional skills. She has also served as president of the Wappingers PTA Council and education chair of the Taconic Region PTA, where she has developed educational forums for parents and educators on topics such as the Common Core state standards initiative, school bullying, and opiate epidemic. Annette Marzan
Planned Parenthood of the Mid-Hudson Valley, Inc. Annette Marzan has been serving the Latino community as a role model, mentor, and volunteer for as long as she can remember. She began her career in 1995 with Planned Parenthood of the M i d - Hu d s o n Valley as a bilingual case aide where she worked with pregnant and parenting teen mothers throughout Orange County. She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Human Services Administration from SUNY Empire and, soon after, was promoted to community outreach manager for Planned Parenthood, where she has been employed for over 20 years. Annette is proud to call the Hudson Valley her home for 28 years, coming to the area from New York City looking for a place to raise her son. Always looking to give back, Annette volunteered at the Open Space Program for young girls
before eventually becoming program director. Under her leadership, in 2012, Annette founded the Newburgh Girl Power Program in an effort to continue serving the young girls once they had aged out of the Open Space Program. The new after-school program, housed at St. George’s Episcopal Church in Newburgh, provides positive mentoring experiences, support and leadership skills to adolescent girls by using a linguistically and culturally competent approach. The program aspires to produce confident, active community members by “growing the leader within.” Annette served as chair through 2015 and continues to be a member of the Advisory Board. She also helped to develop two community-wide coalitions to advocate for the Latino community in the Hudson Valley including the Poughkeepsie and Newburgh Healthy Black and Latino Coalitions, which were formed through a Diversity Initiative by Planned Parenthood of the Mid-Hudson Valley in 2014.
Irene Monck Gilman Ciocia
As a resident of Dutchess County from early childhood, Irene Monck grew up in Wappingers Falls and is the youngest of nine children. Her father passed away when she was almost ten years old and her mother went back to work at entry level jobs in manufacturing and retail until she retired at 65. Her mother raised her children to believe “there is always room for one more,” which inspired a lifelong desire to help others. Irene wanted to be a cosmetologist and started cutting hair at age nine for anyone who would sit still long enough. At 18, she began her 28-year hairdressing career, eventually owning her own salon, thus fulfilling her creative side. She mentored employees and provided opportunities for advancement and education. She
2017 ATHENA Awards Honorees also volunteered for the Grace Smith House, giving free haircuts to their clients and became a “Big Sister” for a 12-year-old City of Poughkeepsie resident over the course of three years through Dutchess County’s Big Brothers & Sisters Program. In her early-40s, through the generous opportunity of her financial advisor, Irene changed careers to pursue her passion for investments and the markets. Initially an unpaid internship, the position rapidly turned into a part-time, paid position that included research and portfolio design as well as conducting annual client reviews. This new career allowed Irene to explore other interests. At the age of 47, Irene and her partner, Victor, became foster parents and are currently fostering two brothers, ages four and five. Monck also joined the PoughkeepsieArlington Rotary Club, where she spearheaded a Rotary International Global Grant to fund a water access and purification project in the rural Arbonite Region of Northwestern Haiti. In January, she traveled to Haiti and witnessed first-hand the efforts of the Vassar Haiti Project, one of the global grant partners. “Always room for one more” propels Irene to lend a helping hand whenever possible. She believes she has enough and it is her duty to give back and share her prosperity with those in need.

his summer I spent my free time working for the “Color My Future!” coloring book project through the Career Action Center at Poughkeepsie High School. Instead of pictures of little kids playing or princesses, the coloring book features different careers and jobs. The time I spent meeting with the other artists and contributing to the project was a very wonderful experience for me. I usually don’t draw during the summer as much as I do when school is in session, so it was a good way to push me into the habit of drawing more regularly! I also enjoyed knowing my work was showing opportunities
to a younger generation. This project also means I can put ‘published artist’ on my resume, now, in addition to helping to develop my drawing style, which will help my efforts to get into art school in the future. Learning about the different careers was interesting, too. It helped me, and the other artists, discover more about certain fields such as medical arts or the trades. I have even grown an interest in becoming an EMT if my plans for art
school change! I think it’s cool, if not a little daunting, that over 10,000 copies will be distributed throughout the Hudson Valley. Make sure to grab a copy! “We make a living by what we earn. We make a life by what we give.” ~Winston Churchill
I
t’s that time of year again. The days get shorter and cooler and the commercials get longer. Some of us will start preparing our wish lists and start our shopping a little early just to avoid the crowds. Unfortunately, many families in our community aren’t in that situation. Too many of our neighbors are faced with a harsh reality and their “wish lists” are comprised of necessities like money for the rent, food, heat, and even clothing
instead of gifts for the children or themselves. Since 2008, the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce has hosted the Adopt-A-Family program, connecting businesses and organizations with hundreds of families in need right here in Dutchess County. We can make a difference in their lives. We can bring holiday cheer to our neighbors. Please, consider participating in this year’s Adopt A- Family program. Contact Elizabeth Kwant, Director of Workforce Connections, at ekwant@dcrcoc.org or 845-454-1700 ext. 1013 and ask how you can help our neighbors this holiday season. Together, we can make a difference.
Make a great impression every time a customer calls. Even when you can’t answer the phone, our virtual receptionists let your customers know you care.
