he Chamber has had a very busy few months, including candidate forums at the last two Contact Breakfasts, several networking events, and a very successful Think Local First Business and Hospitality Expo. Chamber members were able to take advantage of these opportunities to connect with other members of the regional business community and learn about import economic and political issues. These are just a few of the benefits that membership provides. As the year starts to wind down, it is a good time to take stock of where your business or organization is, and where it is going in 2019. Chamber membership can

Message from the
Chamber President Frank Castella, Jr.
Get acquainted with local businesses on November 24
N
ovember means the start of the holiday season is here, and as you plan your holiday shopping and what you need for your seasonal celebrations, please remember to Think Local First. Our Hudson Valley merchants have practically everything you could possibly fathom to gift and prepare for this year -- whether it’s apparel, jewelry, excursions, culinary experiences and creations, décor, crafted wares, or even something special just for you. Most people find it easier to navigate gift giving and other holiday needs online, but remember there may be something even more unique and special right here at a local shop in the Hudson Valley. And for those of you who must shop online, many of our local shops maintain online stores. When you shop local, you keep neighborhood businesses in business, you allow them to thrive, you keep local people employed and generate sales tax revenue – all of which benefit our local economy. This means local organizations, government, and the overall community thrives, and becomes vibrant
and more resilient. That is the basic principle behind Small Business Saturday, which lands this year on November 24. Small Business Saturday is a wonderful time to reacquaint y yourself with your lo community by local sh showing that supp port. The Chamber has once again partnered with American Express in promoting Small Business Saturday and has every year since the campaign’s launch in 2010. Last year, shoppers spent nearly $13 billion at independent retailers and restaurants. If you want to get involved, visit dcrcoc.org/shopsmall and sign up! We have Small Business Saturday promotional materials and key information on how to get the most out of the day. To learn more about the national movement, visit ShopSmall.com. Small Business Saturday is the best time to get acquainted with local businesses and all they have to offer—especially this holiday season. Think Local First!
Sincerely,
Frank M. Castella, Jr., President & CEO

A graduate of Pennsylvania State UniKRAMER versity, Holly began her 20-year finance career with IBM in 1997 before moving to Gap Inc. in 2005. In that moment, Holly decided to become a coach to teach team spirit, leadership and being part of a larger community. It brought Holly’s own memories to the surface of being young and told that girls do not go to college. This passion has taken Holly to working with Boys & Girls Club, Poughkeepsie Farm Project, United Way, American Heart Association as well as Sparrow’s Nest. She also volunteers with Action for Kids, Air Ambulance, and Feeding the Homeless. Holly firmly believes that life experiences bring you to your passions. She leads by example with her family on how hard work, discipline and volunteering can shape both family and community positively. Women's Leadership Alliance supports ATHENA, HR Housing Congratulations to the 2018 ATHENA honorees Strength, wisdom, courage and enlightenment - inspired by the goddess of Greek mythology by the same name, the ATHENA Leadership award is presented each year by the C h a m b e r Pietrow Foundation, Inc. to honorees who demonstrate excellence in their profession, contribute time and energy to their community and assist women in reaching their full potential. The Women's Leadership Alliance works with the Chamber Foundation to encourage nominations of
women who embody these qualities and who create an impact on our community. "I leave this ceremony filled with admiration for our tight-knit community and the selfless people who live, work, volunteer and work among us." Molly Ahearn, owner of Full Deck Design and 2017 ATHENA honoree.
Hudson River Housing Another force creating tremendous impact on our community is Hudson River Housing (HRH), the Women's Leadership Alliance Non-Profit of the Year. "Hudson River Housing gave me a house. I was homeless - a house. I am forever grateful." It's words like these from Hector, a former client that motivate HRH to improve lives and this com-
munity. Last year alone, HRH provided emergency shelter for 798 unique individuals at Webster House, where guests received a warm meal, a shower, a safe place to rest and the opportunity to meet with a care manager to plan their next steps. "Homelessness is a community issue,” says Linda Malave, Associate Executive Director of Webster House. The WLA is proud to support HRA as it runs its campaign to raise awareness about homelessness where community members are asked to share a piece of their bounty and to reflect deeply on the causes and solutions to homelessness. Activi-
ties include volunteer shifts, donation drives, outreach as well as the 12th Annual Wind Chill Fund Dinner, on Friday, November 9 at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel & Conference Center. HRH knows that providing shelter is just a first step, which is why their services now include a range of supportive housing services, programs for youth and veterans, employment assistance, homeownership assistance, affordable rental housing and community building. The Poughkeepsie Underwear Factory, a once-vacant mill building just off Main Street, was repurposed by HRH into a vibrant
mix of affordable housing, with commercial and community space where the pathway of opportunity opens up to people in need. "There are a lot of stereotypes out there about people who are homeless. What we have come to find out is that we all share a common humanity," stated Ms. Malave. To learn more about what you can do to prevent homelessness, please visit hudsonriverhousing.org. Thank you for a great golf outing
O
n behalf of The Chamber Foundation, its board members and staff, I want to personally thank the Day of Golf Committee for their hard work and dedication in making this year’s Day of Golf, Benefiting the Norman and Rita Nussbickel Memorial Scholarship Fund, a huge success. The tournament was held at the Links at Union Vale and, for the second year in a row, the committee was chaired by Michael Mullaney of Hudson Cadillac-Buick-GMC. Mike and his committee spent months in planning the event, recruiting golfers and soliciting for raffle prizes. Without their support, the Foundation’s Day of Golf would not be the success that it is year after year. Also, thank you to our sponsors and the over 110 golfers that came out to support The Chamber Foundation. It is because of events like this that The Chamber Foundation is able to continue its

HSE classes helping youth achieve goals By Danica Pierre-Louis Youth One Stop Case Manager
O
ne of the many support services Youth One Stop offers is an on-site high school equivalency class for those who have not yet attained their high school diploma. Cliff Liu from Dutchess Community College teaches our high school equivalency class. The process of attaining your HSE takes dedication. Participants are tested to see what their level of education is at the time of enrollment. Participants are scored
and placed in a basic educationlearning path. Once the basic level is completed students are tested. If they have a passing score of at least 70%, they will then be moved into an achieved level. Once completed with the achieved levels, students are tested again. If they have a passing score of at least 70%, they are then recommended to test. It is not necessary to take both basic and achieved semesters offered. But they are available to help the participant gain the best chance to help to pass the HSE exams. Cliff is dedicated to helping students reach their goals and will
work one on one with students after classes if they need extra help. He will also do individual or a group tutoring sessions with participants struggling in high school. This is especially beneficial to in school participants, or to those who have not passed a portion of the HSE exams. During the past 3 years, Cliff has taught numerous students. Several have passed the exams to attain their High School Equivalency. Just this year, we had a 75% passing success rate. Classes run from 9AM – 2PM, Monday through Thursday.

Protecting your network By Jaime M. Butler
H
omes today are filled with a wide range of wireless devices starting with phones, doorbells, cameras, thermostats, TVs and even some appliances. Taking the proper steps to secure your home network will help protect these devices along with your information from hackers. If you don’t take certain precautions, anyone nearby can use your
network that you set up. If an unauthorized person uses your network to commit a crime or send spam, the activity could likely be traced back to your account and you would have to take painstaking steps to prove your innocence. You’ll want to make sure you set up encryption on your wireless network. Encryption will mix up the information you send into a special code that is not accessible to others. This is the most effective way to secure your network

Career Action Center mentors are stationed in Poughkeepsie High School to provide students with the necessary skills to identify and pursue their career interests and/ or obtain employment. Mentors also facilitate an intensive job and career readiness mentoring program to 50 juniors and seniors at Poughkeepsie High School. he Student, Family, & Community Series (SFCS) is a part of a grant that was started in 2014 by former President Obama to address barriers to success for boys and young men of color. The Poughkeepsie City School District (PCSD) received the MBK grant in 2016 and has collaborated with the City of Poughkeepsie, The Chamber Foundation Inc., and the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce (DCRCOC) to implement it. The SFCS was designed towards strengthening student and family engagement by connecting them with the community, as well as creating awareness of college and career readiness. The series was composed of several events and workshops over the course of several days including the MBK Kick Off Event, the Work Local First Job Fair, a Financial Literacy Workshop, Parents, Partners, &
Pancakes, along with Poughkeepsie High School Family Team Building day at Sharpe Reservation. The MBK Kick-Off honored students, family members, and all stakeholders who’ve come together to support these young men
and provide them with the tools necessary to reach success. Students and their families attended the DCRCOC annual Work Local First Job Fair and attended a workshop on how to navigate a job fair, proper etiquette, and financial literacy training. With over 1,250 in attendance, the
PCSD and the DCRCOC hosted Parents, Partners, & Pancakes. It was a day filled with food, fun, workshops, and activities. Various local organizations were present to provide resources to the students and families. The final event was the Poughkeepsie High School Family Team Building day at Sharpe Reservation. Students, family members, and mentors joined together to strengthen their communication, leadership, and problem solving skills. At the end of the event, students, family members and mentors left with the understanding of the importance of teamwork and how it relates to real life situations. “It is programs like MBK that really make me feel connected and cared for.” said Jaaquan Forrest, a current MBK Fellow and senior at Poughkeepsie High School. “ I know that I can achieve my goals of graduating high school and going to college because I have a great support system.”
