A

s members of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce know, one of the things we do quite often is cut ribbons. We hold ribbon cuttings for new businesses, those opening new locations, even milestone anniversaries for longtime members.

Ribbon cuttings might seem like a relatively small part of the Chamber’s calendar of events, but they are quite momentous for those businesses being celebrated.

They are also a great way for the business community to come out and lend support to those be-

ing recognized.

For those who haven’t been to a ribbon cutting lately, let me review for you how it works.

First, Chamber members, other local business representatives, elected officials, friends, relatives, and anyone else meSSAGe FROm who would like tHe CHAIR: to attend can get a tour of the Frank business. That Castella, Jr. is followed by the formal ceremony where Chamber President Charlie North presides over the ribbon cutting, Chamber members and VIPs are introduced, and presentations to

mark the day are made.

After the ribbon is cut, guests can network with each other and make business connections over light refreshments. The ribbon is signed by everyone to be proudly displayed in the place of business.

We have quite a few ribbon cuttings set for October – just go to page 7 to check them all out.

Most are scheduled for either lunchtime of the end of the day, in deference to those with busy calendars.

Please make a point to enter at least a few of these ribbon cuttings into your calendar and show your support for fellow Chamber members. I look forward to seeing you there!

ast month in this space, I discussed how the Chamber works with its many partners in government and throughout the region to make the Hudson River Valley a better place for business, tourism, and of course, its residents.

Another example of this is the Chamber’s partnership with the Poughkeepsie Journal and The United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region to increase volunteerism on Make a Difference Day, coming up on October 27.

Make a Difference Day was started by USA Weekend, owned by Gannett, which also owns the Journal. Last year alone, more than three million people around the country pitched in on various projects.

Our goal is to get community service organizations to post projects to a special website and then to have residents choose how they would like to help on this special day.

But make no mistake – our three organizations collectively have a greater purpose in mind.

We want this volunteerism to carry on beyond October 27.

I know how many of you give back in so many ways, and that’s part of the reason this is

n the heels of two extraordinarily successful drives in the past year, the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Living Green Committee is again calling on the Hudson Valley to easily and properly recycle all old or unwanted computers and personal electronics during an Electronic Recycling Day on Friday, October 26 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Hudson Valley Marketplace in Poughkeepsie. Volunteers will be available to assist with the unloading of cars.

This one-day-only collection is open to businesses and households alike. Businesses are asked to pre-register their dropoff time by calling 845-454-1700 ext. 1000. While there is no cost

to utilize the service, donations benefitting The Chamber Foundation, Inc., are being accepted with a suggested donation of $20 per business and $5 per household. During the previous two Electronic Recycling Days, the Living Green committee has collected more than 100,000 pounds of items while raising over $3,000 for The Chamber Foundation.

Recycling old electronics is a boost to not only the environment, but also the economy. Proper electronic recycling helps to reduce emissions, limits the strain on our landfills and ensures that harmful chemicals used in production do no harm to the ecosystem. Items can also occasionally be salvaged and refurbished before being either sold or donated to local citizens and not-for-profit organizations in need.

n our mobile society, it’s important that we keep up with our competition but also be as productive as possible and make the most of our time away from our desks. To that end, there are a number of apps available to the mobile workforce that can help.

Green Qube is an application developed for iPad clients to provide remote access to Windows desktops, virtualized and stored in the applications cloud service. Users are able to configure the app to their personal taste, and it even includes a soft keyboard and a Windows Start Menu that is touch sensitive.

With security on mobile devices being a great concern, another great app available to users is mSecure Password Manager for

Android, iOS, MAC Os and Windows platform devices. This app can securely store all your major account info for websites, credit cards and bank accounts. It also has the ability to generate new passwords and keep a back-up of this information.

PocketCloud is another app available for those looking to view files, launch applications or access other resources on systems running Linux, MAC OS X and Windows (7, XP and Vista) from an Android or iOS device while utilizing a Wi-

Fi connection (3 or 4G). If you happen to misplace your mobile device while out in the field, an app like Where’s My Droid may be what saves the day. This app can ring, vibrate, sound an alarm, display a message, lock app changes, wipe phone or SD data, and even display status or GPS location through a web browser so you can locate your device or at least prevent any important data falling into the wrong hands.

These are just some of the amazing apps out there and available to users. It’s important to research what apps might be the best for you and your mobile staff to stay in touch and keep your business moving.

Event to raise awareness about hearing loss

Hearing loss affects 38 million Americans, making it the third most prevalent public health concern in the nation following heart disease and arthritis. Here in the Hudson Valley, the Mid-Hudson chapter of the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) works to educate those living with a hearing loss about various coping strategies, as well as how to use assistive devices in daily living. HLAA accomplishes their goals through education, advocacy and support. They pride themselves on being local catalysts for change to make hearing loss an issue of national concern.

The Walk4Hearing, a local

event organized as part of a national day of recognition, takes place at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls on Saturday, October 13. Registration starts at 10:30 a.m. Whether you want to run, walk or cheer in support of hearing loss awareness, the walk offers something for everyone.

For those living with hearing loss, it can be difficult to hear your spouse, children, and co-workers, or to use the phone, especially those with modern automated features. Entertainment options are frequently limited due to noise. It is difficult to hear in a noisy restaurant or meeting room. Additionally, most smoke alarms will not awake a person with hearing loss from their sleep.

Those coping with the condition don’t know where to find the answers to overcome theses obstacles. The HLAA aims to help, but they need support to carry out their mission.

hen Tony Trigonis and his business partner, Tom Moustakas, opened the I-84 Diner in 1977, things were quite different. There was little competition, fewer businesses in the southern part of Dutchess County, prices were a bit less, and Trigonis never locked the door, since the Diner was open 24 hours a day.

“We didn’t even have a key,” he said.

That became a problem several years later as he and most of

The Poughkeepsie Public Library District has received a grant from The National Endowment from the Arts for the sixth year, due in large part to the significant swell in community support. More than 35 community libraries, colleges, schools, civic and arts organizations are partnering with PPLD to host over 80 public events for readers of all ages. The business community is involved too, with generous support from the Community Foundations of the Hudson Valley, Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union, Riverside Bank, TD Bank, the Friends of PPLD, and twelve downtown restaurants partnering with the Bardavon for a Big Read Night on the Town.

Rebuilding Together Dutchess County is accepting applications now for 2013 home repair program (from July through October).

The repairs are done at no cost to income-qualified homeowners through the generous sponsorship of many area businesses, national sponsors, area churches and other grant programs.

The organization plans to complete approximately 15 projects total on its National Rebuilding Day in April 2013 and Fall Rebuilding Day in October 2013. Since its founding in 1992, over 400 homes have been rehabilitated throughout the county, providing services worth over $4 million at market value.

Interested individuals are encouraged to begin the process immediately. The deadline for completed applications is October 31, 2012. Selected homeowners will be notified in early March 2013.

Low-income Dutchess County homeowners, especially those who are elderly, living with a disability, veterans or parents with young children are encouraged to apply.

library branch issue on ballot The Poughkeepsie Public Library District is proposing to build a new town branch on Boardman Road in order to address the growing demand for its services. The current branch library is located in rented space in an office building directly on the eastbound arterial.

“The Library District pays $125,000 a year in rent and common charges for a site that, at 6,500 square feet, with only one small meeting room, is inadequate to support the demand for materials, technology, and programs,” said Director Tom Lawrence.

The Library District proposes to purchase a six-acre site that is currently owned by Faith Assembly of God. The site includes a building, and a parking lot that meets the current

Town of Poughkeepsie code.

The proposed project involves the renovation of 18,000 square feet of interior space, and the addition of 4,200 square feet of new space. The new library will include three meeting rooms, including one dedicated to children’s programs, to address the public library’s expanding role as a community center offering programs for all ages.

The total cost of the project is $6,550,000. The site is already off the tax rolls and therefore has no impact on the Town’s budget. The annual tax impact for an owner of a home valued at $225,000 would be $21.50 in the City of Poughkeepsie and $11.93 in the Town.

Poughkeepsie residents will have an opportunity to vote on the project on November 6.

ach month the Chamber recognizes one of their committees, and October is “Ambassador Committee” month.

The role of this committee is to support members in maximizing the value of their membership and to provide open lines of communications to the Chamber.

New members benefit the most from the Ambassador Committee. The Committee has a “Buddy System”; where new members are assigned to Ambassadors.

Ambassadors will reach out to the new members to invite them to events or answer any questions they might have about the Chamber. By having a “buddy,” new members become involved more

If you have been a member for a while and have not attended any events, an Ambassador would gladly meet you and help you through the networking process. Some quick background about myself: I was born and raised here in Dutchess County, growing up in Hyde Park attending Franklin Delano Roosevelt High School and later Mount Saint Mary College where I graduated with a degree in Communication Arts and minors in English and Theater. Immediately following college, I joined the Saint Francis Health Care Foundation at Saint Francis Hospital, working my way up to Manager of Special Events.

Actively involved in various nonprofits, I am a past Forty Under 40 Award recipient and a 2012 graduate of Leadership Dutchess.

The Chamber Foundation, Inc., will present the 2012 ATHENA Award on Sunday, December 2 during a special brunch at The Grandview (176 Rinaldi Blvd., Poughkeepsie) from 12-3 p.m. The recipient of the award will travel to the ATHENA International conference in Chicago to represent the Hudson Valley region.

Bestowed annually, the ATHENA Award is given to a member of the community who best embodies the ATHENA Leadership Model. The Model is unique in that it focuses on personal traits of strong, successful leaders. It captures the spirit and collaborative leadership style often exemplified in women leaders, while also recognizing the importance of traits such as courageous acts and fierce advocacy in the pursuit of excellence.
