the ways the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce supports its members is by hosting ribbon cuttings. We host ribbon cuttings for new businesses as well as those with new locations and special occasions, such as anniversaries for longtime members. I always enjoy participating in ribbon cuttings because it is stimulating to see the community supporting our local businesses. Well, this month, it’s your chance to show your support for the Chamber, as the Chamber is excited to be hosting a ribbon cutting of our own at

A longtime personal trainer with a successful practice in New York City for many years and the owner of D&D Health and Fitness, LLC, Danieluc recently moved to
Dutchess County to find a quieter place to raise his two sons. He immediately noticed a lack of available judo training options, and opened Judokan. “I’m trying to make Judokan a unique judo club because in Dutchess County, there is not even one real dojo,” Danieluc said. “I’m hoping to build a judo club with tradition that’s the biggest and best judo club for both kids and adults.” Judo, a self-defense discipline and Olympic sport, is a traditional

Finally, on a personal note, October is national Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This cause is tremendously important to me, as my mother has not only survived breast cancer once; she has actually survived it twice (yay mom!). Words cannot express how grateful I am to still have the support and guidance of my amazing mom. Without awareness, the advances in the battle against breast cancer would not continue. So please, wear your pink, take part in a walk and generally consider showing your support in any way for this important cause. According to Danieluc, studying the art has a myriad of benefits, especially for children. “If you want your kids to improve self confidence, discipline, their attention span, coordination, balance and ability to interact with others, then the Judokan Athletic Club is the right place to be,” he said. New Beacon office to help serve southern members
I
t is with great pleasure that I can announce that the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce has, as of mid-September, opened a second office in Beacon, giving us a physical presence in both Dutchess County cities. This new office, located at 33 Henry Street, will serve as a secondary base of operations for all Chamber business and the work done by our Workforce Development Center and Youth One Stop. It is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. with the Youth One Stop additionally open Thursday’s until 7 p.m. and on the first Saturday of each month from Noon-4 p.m. I urge any of our members in the lower part of the county to stop by anytime we may be of service. It is my hope that the Beacon office allows us to better understand the unique needs and challenges facing the business community in Southern Dutchess County and also helps us expand our membership base there. Beacon is vibrant city with a wonderful Main Street business district, a great love of the arts and plenty of people who Think Local First. We at the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce are excited to get
even more involved in that community and to continue to promote Beacon as the worldclass destination that it is. I’d also like to take this opportunity to invite you to see our new space for yourself during our official grand opening ribbon cutting and special dedication on Thursday, October 10 at 5 p.m. Our doors will be open for tours and the Chamber staff will be on hand to greet friends and tell any new faces about all the different programs offered through membership. Refreshments will be served. Now with two active offices, the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce can be even more useful to the business community this holiday season – but we can’t do it alone. Come see us, attend an event, let us know what’s on your mind or what you think we can do to better promote all that we love about the Hudson Valley, and together, let’s make doing business here better.
Sincerely,
Charles S. North President & CEO

Put your finances at your fingertips with mobile banking
I
n today’s technology driven world, bank customers want to do business with their bank when, where and how they want. that Increasingly, means mobile banking. A strong mobile banking platform is secure and provides you with access to all of your accounts across various devices via numerous channels:
• Mobile apps. You should be able to access your accounts, pay bills and transfer funds with your mobile device—anytime, anywhere. It’s all about convenience. For example, KeyBank recently released a mobile deposit app that allows users to take a photo of a check with their phone or tablet and then submit it for deposit. No trip

to the bank or ATM is required. • A mobile device friendly website. Your bank’s website must also be accessible via your smart phone. You bank on the go, and you need to be able to get online to conduct your banking activity without sacrificing the quality of your experience. • Text banking. Check in on your account 24/7 by sending commands from your mobile phone
and instantly receive account information via text message. • Account alerts. Enhance your online and mobile banking experience by signing up to be notified via email or text message when important activity occurs in your account. It is also important that your bank develops these mobile features to work across the most
popular platforms and operating systems, including iPhones, iPads and Android. Signing up for mobile banking is easy. At most banks, including KeyBank, it’s free. All you need to do is opt in to get started. It’s easy, secure and can make managing your finances easier than ever. For more information, and a complete list of services, visit KeyBank at www.key.com or call 1-800-539-2968.
A pinch here, a dash there – Do you have the right recipe for data storage? orybased storage makes them extremepractical. ly The down side is how fast the components actually that hold the data can spin and this will always limit your ability to get something instantly. SSDs (Solid State Drives) can be installed in the same places hard drives can be installed and have their own controlling electronics. These can be 10 or more times faster than a hard drive, but they often take up a lot of space for the actual storage that they provide. Flash memory doesn’t have unnecessary drive packaging and repeats of the controlling hardware, it is all dedicated space for storage. Flash is best used for anything deemed “hot”. 3. Direct-Attached Storage(DAS) vs. Network-Attached Storage(NAS) vs. Storage Area Network(SAN) – Direct is probably what you’re most familiar with and it’s cheap, easy and fast to deal with when you’re connecting right into the computer to the data you need.
Network is actually attached to the network, your usually normal Ethernetwork. net This traffic runs along the same network connections as all of your other traffic, so it’s more suitable for file sharing than for high-speed searches of a database where latency may be an issue. These are easier to hook up as they only need to be assigned an IP address and restrictions for file access. A SAN is actually a network of available storage area. To a server, a SAN is a blocklevel device; if implemented prop-
erly, what goes on inside is hidden from the application. This means that capabilities like storage pooling and logical units happen behind the scenes. If you have an implementation that works specifically with SAN, you can san lightening speed performance over dedicated fiber

business couldn’t survive if they didn’t have the ability to store vital data needed to keep things running, search for particular pieces, and retrieve that data in the optimal amount of time. Fast, optimized storage can be quite pricey. To improve the quality of your storage capabilities here are some key things to keep in mind as you try to determine the best way to meet your storage needs: 1. Use the right platforms for your needs – it is highly unlikely that you’d run all your application storage needs off of single piece of storage technology. Do you know if some of your data is accessed constantly and instantly (“hot data”) and which parts are rarely used and it’s okay if it takes longer for them to be available (“cold data”)? Being able to recognize the difference will help you in selecting the right platforms for either “hot” or “cold” data. 2. Hard Drives vs. SSD vs. Flash – which is correct? Hard drives are great because they can hold a lot of information and the cost per gigabyte of information they can hold compared to mem-

Despite melodramatic media accounts of the conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), over 90% of the population is living in peace in an area the size of the U.S. east of the Mississippi River. Congolese women have been seriously disadvantaged by traditional and religious gender stereotypes as well as a restrictive legal code. However, from little girls on up to elderly grandmothers there is an astounding dynamism to be found among women. Dr. Diana Putman, the USAID/DRC Mission Director, will present examples of rural and urban, illiterate and well educated, Congolese women who are striving within their homes, communities and across the country to create a better future for the DRC on Monday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. in the Rockefeller Room on the campus of Vassar College, sponsored by the World Affairs Council of the Hudson Valley. No Sign Up is necessary, but you may send an email to arputman@ies-ny.com to indicate you are planning to attend.
Groundwater & Environmental Services, Inc., with an area location in Patterson, N.Y., is the winner of Environmental Business Journal’s 2012 Business Achievement Award in the remediation technology category for deployment of real-time remote monitoring systems to observe and analyze data on groundwater, surface water, and air emissions at project sites. GES successfully used remote monitoring and data trend analyses on a variety of projects. On one project, GES collected data to understand natural methane fluctuations in groundwater and well headspace, demonstrating how those data correlate to other parameters such as weather changes and water well pumping. GES also has also implemented real-time monitoring on projects that utilize solar-powered weather stations installed at unconventional gas well drilling sites. The real-time data is being used to notify staff, via e-mail alarm notifications, of potentially unsafe conditions (e.g., high winds). Rainfall data (programmed with daily and hourly rainfall alarms) is used to initiate erosion and sediment control enhancements and inspections. For more on GES please visit www.gesonline.com
