he Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce’s annual Business Expo returns to the centrally located MidHudson Civic Center on Wednesday, October 22 from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Attendees can browse the best in local business at no cost, meeting with owners and managers of companies and organizations across all categories. There will plenty of raffles, giveaways and a grand prize drawing throughout the afternoon.

Chamber, Poughkeepsie H.S. begin groundbreaking program

F

orged by a landmark partnership between the business community and its local school district, the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce opened the Career Action Center in Poughkeepsie High School for the start of the 2014-2015 school year and started the Career Development Intensive Mentoring Program. The Center is believed to be the first chamber of commerce-sponsored

in-house program in a public school in New York State.

This collaboration between Chamber the and Poughkeepsie City School District provides PHS students with the necessary skills to identify and pursue their long-term career interests and/or obtain employment. Professionals from the Chamber’s Workforce Development Center staff the Career Ac-

tion Center, which is open five days a week while school is in session. Two additional mentors support the Career Development Intensive Mentoring Program along with a CTE teacher from PHS. Participating youth attend meetings at scheduled times for career readiness programs and drop-in hours are also available.

“The Chamber and our Workforce Development Center is extremely pleased to be able to impact the youth in our community through the Career Action and Development Center at Poughkeepsie High School,” said Charles North, President and CEO of

the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce. “I’d like to thank Dr. Nicole Williams and everyone at PHS for their help and support in getting this program off the ground. We look forward to graduating students with the skills necessary to succeed in the socalled real world once their studies

are complete.”

In addition to job searching and training help, students have access to mentors, can hear from professionals in the business community through a speaker series, and can prepare for interviews with area employers who will attend an annual career fair.

Restaurants, wineries part of event

ince 1988, the Taste of the Hudson Valley has been a regional culinary tradition.

From its humble beginnings as a competition between just 15 local restaurants and five wineries, the Taste of the Hudson Valley has grown tremendously, tripling in size and reach.

This year’s Taste of the Hudson Valley will take place on Sunday, November 2 from noon-4 p.m at

believe a Chamber of Commerce must be more than networking events and ribbon cuttings. That’s why we continually invest in and grow our Workforce Development Center, which connects local youth and adults with job training, mentorship and education in a variety of ways.

We already have Work Now, Responsible Parent Initiative and Step Up programs for adults, as well as Youth Employment Services and the Youth One Stop for school-aged children and young adults. As partners with Dutchess County Department of Community and Family Services and the Workforce Investment Board, we feel confident about making a difference in the lives of local students.

And now we are proud to unveil our newest program – the Career Action and Development Center at Poughkeepsie High School. To read more about it, please see the article on page 3.

Growing and maintaining a robust local economy means not just focusing on what’s happening right now, but also positioning us for the best possible future. That’s why we spend so much time enhancing the development of the employees and leaders of

tomorrow.

New devices can help businesses

or some, Apple will never be the same since Steve Jobs’ passing.

The new CEO, Tim Cook, is answering criticism with a new wave of Apple products. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, the introduction of Apple Pay and even a wearable device called Apple Watch should quiet any negative comments.

You’ll be seeing the use of new horizontal views when using apps, which takes advantage of the larger screens available on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. The inside of the iPhone 6 is also impressive, boasting 50 times faster processing speed. The A8 chip inside allows for longer, sustained performance allowing the iPhone 6 to work at

peak performance without slowing down from overheating, and the battery is expected to have 14 hours of video playback capability.

Backed by iSight and the new iSight sensor which features Focus Pixels technology, the camera is able to provide better and faster auto-focusing and details.

Apple Pay is the company’s effort to get you to toss your wallet aside and replace it with an electronic one.

Users simply pay at supporting retails stores by holding their phone near a scanner, while the user holds a finger on the Touch ID sensor.

This payment platform also offers higher security as it uses one-time payment codes that are encrypted to

send payments to merchants.

The Apple Watch features an accelerometer to track a user’s movements, a GPS with multiple mobile-specific features, including reminding a user of what bus stop they need to get off at based on location. Mill Street Loft (MSL), will be bringing their year-round vi-

sual arts classes to two new locations in Northern and Southern Dutchess County. MSL will be returning to Red Hook this fall with six classes for all ages, including adults. Classes will take place at St. Paul’s Parish Hall at Fisk Street and Route 9, which has been home to their award-winning Dutchess Arts Camp each summer for the past six years.

In Pawling, MSL has formed a partnership with Mizzentop Day School to offer art classes on the Mizzentop campus. Classes are open to the public and students.

Sessions start with classes for elementary and middle school children in September and will add high school and adult classes soon after. Classes will be offered in two six-week sessions from September to mid-December.

On September 11, The Chazen Companies’ senior leadership team volunteered at New York State Mills Memorial State Park to build and paint a fence along the Hudson River that was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy.

The fence serves as a security barrier for children visiting the park.

Netgiving provides support, advice

he Chamber’s Women’s Leadership Alliance is building on the recent success of its first two Netgiving networking events with two more gatherings in October and November.

The primary focus of these events is to offer ideas, suggestions, resources and/or connections to fellow attendees. These are time-structured events to allow equal support to every attendee.

The program begins promptly at 5:30 p.m., and you should plan to stay until 7.

n October 28, The Chamber Foundation, in partnership with the Women’s Leadership Alliance, is proud to welcome Carolyn Everson, Vice President of Global Marketing Solutions at Facebook, as the keynote speaker at our ATHENA Leadership Luncheon being held at Dutchess Community College.

Taking a different approach, this year’s ATHENA leadership programming is seek-

ing to reconnect with the Hudson Valley’s past ATHENA honorees and recipients and also work on reigniting the spirit of ATHENA in each of us.

The ATHENA Model identifies eight distinct attributes that are reflective of women’s contributions to leadership: Authentic Self, Relationships, Giving Back, Collaboration, Courageous Acts, Learning, Fierce Advocacy, Celebration and Joy. These personal traits that are more intuitive to women, combined with the strongest aspects of traditional leadership - taking risks, assertiveness, hard work, prepare women and men to be successful leaders.

The Chamber Foundation was proud to recently kick off both Youth Leadership and Leadership Dutchess, classes of 2015.

This year’s Youth Leadership Program is being held at Marist College. Welcoming nearly 95 high school students, the session topic was Leading with Leadership and included Frank Castella, Jr., County Executive Marcus Molinaro and Charlie North.

Leadership Dutchess had its first session at the Henry A Wallace Center at the FDR Presidential Library and Home and was led by Tom Weddell from Vanacore, DeBendictus, DiGiovanni & Weddell. A Welcome Reception was took place in the evening to cheer on the class of 29 participants.
