he Chamber believes, as do I, that fostering the growth and development of the next generation of leaders in the Hudson Valley is vital to our long-term success. We see scores of alumni from The Chamber Foundation’s Leadership Dutchess program making a big impact on our region, students from Youth Leadership getting in to top colleges, and an active group of volunteers from the Hudson Valley Young Professionals working hard to forge connections and give back to the community while having a little fun.

It’s with that in mind that I hope you’ll support the HVYPs at the Office Chair Challenge, a ridiculously fun event that’s also an important fundraiser for the group’s scholarship fund. Coming Wednesday, September 10 from 5-8 p.m. at All Sport Health and Fitness in Fishkill, the Office Chair Challenge, this year with a medieval times theme, pits 20

teams of two against each other in a crazy obstacle course. Participants dress in costumes and decorate their office chairs – yes, the challenge part is that all events must be completed while sitting in an office chair – all to help raise money for a good cause. Because of the success of last year’s event, the HVYPs were able to award two scholarships instead of just one for the first time ever.

As much fun as the Office Chair Challenge is to compete in (and you can still register your team by visiting hvyp.org/officechairchallenge) it’s just as fun to come and watch. The group is putting together amazing raffle

prizes, will have live music and Deuce from WRRV 92.7/96.9 on hand to emcee, and is even bringing in an inflatable jousting game for spectators to play on.

It’s time to start looking at how your site is being viewed. It isn’t always feasible to invest in a dedicated mobile app, or mobile only site (where a compact version of features is displayed based on device). That’s where Responsive Design comes in.

Simply put, Responsive Design uses “media queries” to detect screen size and feed different layouts to the page based on grids, percentage based graphics sizes, and blocks of content that get turned off and on, and rearrange themselves depending on the device.

Portrait based iPad, landscape cell phone, landscape iPad, desktop screen, all get a different page view where items arrange themselves differently, menus line up with fewer choices, and other things are maybe hidden from view entirely. This responsive approach takes longer to build, can cost more, and lends itself to column based layouts, but if your livelihood depends on online sales, you know that catering to mobile devices is the wave of the future.

You know a site is responsive if you open it in your phone or tablet, and then rotate the page the other way. If the layout changes, it’s a responsive design, although not all responsive designs have different layouts for every possible orientation.

Every website isn’t a candidate for responsive layouts, but 2013 is being called “The Year of Responsive Design” by Mashable.com, and you will definitely start to see more and more of this technique being used, particularly for e-commerce sites. Be sure to ask your designer if responsive layouts are right for your next site.

hile many of you are aware that September means back to school, we at the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce are saying it’s “Back to Work” season. To that end, we are planning some special events that will comprise “Jobs Week” in Dutchess County.

The purpose of Jobs Week is to provide Chamber members and the regional business community with special resources to find individuals the employment they seek, to help organizations recruit employees, and to allow businesses the opportunity to make contacts resulting in new customers and revenue streams.

Among the events planned include: • Our annual Work Local First Job Fair, this year bigger and better than ever with special seminars, multiple rooms filled with employers, resume critiquing and much more (see page 16).

• A special invitation-only luncheon for manufacturers to unveil a new online resource and related business opportunities from the Chamber’s Manufacturing and Trade Committee (see page 5).

• The September Contact Breakfast, featuring Hudson

Vassar Brothers Medical Center recently held an open house to unveil their new Linear Accelerator at the Murphy Center for Radiation Oncology in the Dyson Center for Cancer Care at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. Linear Accelerators deliver external beam radiation treatment to cancer patients by directly treating the tumor while minimizing the risk to the surrounding area. The Elekta Infinity Machine, with the newly designed Agility collimation system, will treat about 20 cancer patients each day and allows for shorter treatment times, improves patient comfort and is more accurate and precise in delivery treatment.

The Elekta Infinity Machine is the latest in state-of-the-art equipment Vassar Brothers Medical Center has purchased to enhance the services at the Hospital with a cost of about $2 million. It is housed in the Dyson Center and is part of Health Quest Cancer Care which includes a comprehensive team of specialists dedicated to treat cancer including preventative, screenings, surgery, support, treatment and research.

Windham Mountain Resort has invested $7 million in capital improvements for the 2013-14 season. Leadership programs ready to roll

A

s summer starts to wind down, The Chamber Foundation is gearing up for another great program year!

Our Leadership programming is stronger than ever. Leadership Dutchess is celebrating 25 years of educating and motivating leadership in the Hudson Valley and has a dynamic class of 26 professional lined up to be the Class of 2014.

The Youth Leadership program, now in its second year of a new format, is nearing 80 high school students! Both programs will kick off this month.

September also starts our fall scholarship program. On September 1, applications will be available for the Cosimo’s DiBrizzi Memorial Scholarship and the ATHENA Adult Scholarship.

The Cosimo DiBrizzi Memorial Scholarship was established by the family of Cosimo DiBrizzi and the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce to honor his memory is available to any resident of the Mid-Hudson Valley who is pursuing a career at the Culinary Institute of America.

The ATHENA Adult Scholarship

was established by the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce to encourage increased leadership roles for women in our community, and is available to any female who lives, works or volunteers in Dutchess County, has been out of high school for at least 5 years, and is pursuing education at an accredited Mid-Hudson Valley College, University or trade school or through an accredited online educational program while maintaining residency in Dutchess County.

Applications for both of these scholarships can be found on The Chamber Foundation’s website; ChamberFDN.org. All applications must be submitted online.

I strongly encourage everyone to spread the word on these two scholarships.

Finally, The Chamber Foundation’s ATHENA Award program is getting ready to unveil the 2013 honorees. The ATHENA committee had a great group of candidates and the final decisions were not easy! Stay tuned for the announcement of this year’s honorees and save the date for this year’s ATHENA Awards Brunch; Sunday, December 8th!
