e met at the pavilion by the antique caboose on the rail trail every Saturday morning at 9 a.m. for 10 weeks, rain or shine. My husband and I were nervous yet excited about the possibility of actually running for the first time since high school, many decades ago.

On Day one we walked for two minutes and ran for one. It sounds so much easier than it actually was at the time. We stayed in the back of the pack and were surprised we could chat and run at the same time.

Over time we started to run more than walk. One of the best parts was the health benefits: after completing the program we trained for three half-marathons, lost a combined total of 120 pounds, were able to stop taking all medication for blood pressure and cholesterol … and we felt better than ever! We now have freedom from the extra weight, pain and ex-

haustion.

Exercise essential is for optimal and health, power walking, jogging and running is so great on the Hudson Valley Rail Trail.

ummer vacation is usually a time to relax, hang out with your friends and tackle the summer reading list that your school handed out. Not this year.

Why would 18 youths sign on to be childcare workers at a local gym, work the front desk at a dance studio or learn graphic design at a digital creative agency?

to tell me that she realized that her friends knew what she meant when she was joking with them, but that her communication style did not always translate well at work. Zahara is off to college, and she said that she looks forward to going back and seeing her employer on breaks.

It is not just the youth who win here. You’ve heard of a win-win situation? Well this is an excellent example in action.

Our Chamber members gain a part-time employee for the summer and are able to pass on knowledge from one generation to the next. For example, taking pride in your work, managing your time and getting along with co-workers.

Cecilia Cook from Smart Staffing Group said, “Our assigned youth completed the tasks we gave her, had a good attitude and was very professional.” When I asked if she would participate next year, she said “definitely!”

s summer comes to an end, The Chamber Foundation is excited to welcome in September! This time of the year is an exciting one for us as our signature leadership programs kick off and our fall scholarship opportunities open up.

Youth Leadership

The Chamber Foundation’s Youth Leadership Program is proud this year to partner with Marist College as our host location for each of the monthly sessions.

This partnership will not only give the program a prestigious home, but it will also allow each of our students the opportunity to be on a college campus, providing them an experience that they may not be able to gain anywhere else.

With a class of nearly 100 students, enrollment for this year’s Youth Leadership Program exceeded all expectations. A twoyear program, this is the largest class to date under the new model.

The Chamber Foundation begins accepting applications on September 1 for our fall Cosimo DiBrizzi Memorial and the ATHENA Adult scholarships. The Cosimo DiBrizzi Scholarship is available to any resident of the Mid-Hudson Valley who is pursuing a career at the Culinary Institute of America.

Students must be accepted (or currently enrolled) at the CIA and planning to enroll within the next six months. The ATHENA Adult Scholarship is available to any female who lives, works or volunteers in Dutchess County, has been out of high school for at least five years, and is pursuing education at an accredited Mid-Hudson Valley college, university or trade school or through an accredited online educational program while maintaining residency in Dutchess County. All applications are due

by Friday, October 3. Applications must be submitted online and can be found by visiting chamberfdn. org. If you know someone who might be eligible, please encourage them to apply! Awards will be presented this fall.

After applying to the program and going through an interview process, these individuals were hand-selected to be a part of our 26th Leadership Dutchess class. This class represents a mix of backgrounds both professionally and personally, and each individual will add a unique element to create a dynamic class. Foundation Gala has many twists

O

n August 13, The Chamber Foundation held its signature event, The Twisted Gala. With 200 people in attendance, the event featured a

reverse drawing for a 2014 HarleyDavidson motorcycle from Woodstock Harley-Davidson. Only 100 chances were sold and every reverse drawing ticket holder won a

prize. Anticipation built as Charlie “Hound Dog” North and Denise “Snake Eyes” VanBuren pulled the numbers until the final two were left. Michael Cavaliere and Maureen Kangas then opted to split $8,000 in cash! Thank you to our sponsors, prize donors, Twisted Gala committee and attendees for making the event a success.
