ncumbent State Senator Terry Gipson will answer questions from the business community alongside challenger and Dutchess County Legislator Sue Serino at the September Contact Breakfast on Wednesday, September 17 from 7:30-9 a.m. at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel and Conference Center. Any specific questions for the candidates may be submitted in advance by e-mailing Howard Lynne, the Chamber’s Volunteer Government Liasion, at howard@dcrcoc. org. New York State Senator Terry Gipson is serving his first-term representing the 41st District, which includes Dutchess and Putnam counties. He claims his top priorities are reducing taxes and creating jobs in the Hudson Valley. Dutchess County Legislator Sue Serino is the owner/operator of Serino Realty and candidate for the 41st state Senate District. She states her core belief is that high taxes damage the economy and destroy jobs, drive business from
New York, and punish homeowners with an excessive tax burden. MidHudson Regional Hospital of Gipson We s t c h e s t e r Medical Center proudly sponsors the September Contact Breakfast. MidHudson Regional Hospital of Westchester Medical Center brings together women and men dedicated to the healthcare needs of the people of the Hudson Valley. They demonstrate that as a diversified health care system, strength is rooted in an acute care foundation, their commitment to quality and excellence in all that they do,
and their belief that wise utilization of resources will the enable hospital to endure, serving generations to serino come. Learn more at midhudsonregionalhospital.org. The Chamber’s Ambassador Committee is continuing to collect canned and dry goods at all Contact Breakfasts to benefit Dutchess Outreach. f you’re a small business owner like me, you know how good it feels to hire someone; to know that you’re providing him or her a way to take care of their family and make a difference in the Hudson Valley. The next time you have the occasion to hire, please remember to look toward our local community first. The Chamber is hosting its annual Work Local First Job Fair on Wednesday, September 17 at the Poughkeepsie Grand. If you’re looking for qualified local employees, visit dcrcoc.org/jobfair and sign up for a table. It’s free. This is one of the largest and most successful job fairs in the area, so you’re sure to find what you’re

looking for. If it’s not job fair season, you can post available employment opportunities online at dcrcoc. org. Just click on the ‘Employment’ tab in the main navigation menu and follow the instructions on the screen. This is another service provided by the Chamber at no cost to the community. Finally, while we’d like every-
one who wants a job to have a job, it’s especially important that we help unemployed veterans, people who have defended and served our country at home and abroad, in their time of need. The Chamber has a longstanding partnership with Hudson River Housing’s Supportive Services for Veteran Families program that pairs local employers with out of work veterans. If you can provide a job for a veteran – construction, food service, anything – check out dcrcoc. org/HireAVet and fill out the form. A representative from Hudson River Housing will be in touch. Remember, thinking local first and hiring local first go hand in hand!

he September Business Education Seminar is scheduled for Tuesday, September 23 from 3:30-5 p.m., immediately before the monthly Business After Hours networking event at Longobardi’s Restaurant, 1574 Route 9 in Wappingers Falls. businesses. People do business with people. And more importantly, people they know, like, and trust. The best way to create and build quality relationships with real people is by meeting and talking face-to-face. But for some, the thought of walking into a room full of people they don’t know and striking up a conversation creates fear, anxiety and sweaty palms. At this hands-on workshop, we will discuss and demonstrate easy to use tools, strategies and techniques to create and maintain connections at events, mixers and even family functions. Attendees will then be encouraged to stay for the Business After Hours networking event with other Chamber members and guests. The Business Education Semi-
nar series is complimentary for members and costs just $10 for non-members, thanks to the sponsorship of Stenger, Roberts, Davis & Diamond, LLP. The firm takes a different approach to the practice of law. While many clients want advice about classic legal issues, some clients require more. Some clients need an attorney who will take the time to fully research their case and to develop creative legal strategies that will protect their interests. They will tailor counsel to their clients’ immediate needs and long-term goals. Whether you want an aggressive lawyer skilled in the area of personal injury, family law, estate planning, real estate, business agreements, elder law, municipal and administrative law or general
litigation, you can count on Stenger, Roberts, Davis & Diamond, LLP to represent you. As one of the largest law firms in Dutchess County, they have the available resources to handle any category of legal dispute. Above all, they will take the time to listen to your problems individu-
ally. The firm has offices at 1136 Route 9, Wappingers Falls and now in the lobby of the Poughkeepsie Journal building, and is also on the web at srddlaw.com To register for this event, please go to dcrcoc.org or call 845-4541700 ext. 1000.

id you know it’s an important election year? Continuing with this month’s Contact Breakfast, the Chamber will keep connecting you with those running for office in races that impact the Hudson Valley. Following the 18th District Congressional race between incumbent Sean Patrick Maloney and challenger Nan Hayworth that we focused on in August, this month we highlight the State Senate contest featuring incumbent Terry Gipson and challenger Sue Serino. If necessary, we’ll feature another important local election in October, too. If you’ve got a question you’d like answered at one of our forums, e-mail Howard Lynne, our Volunteer Government Liaison, at howard@dcrcoc.org. Making sure that Chamber members and the business community have direct access to candidates running for office and are able to get their specific questions answered is one of our highest priorities. I hope you all take advantage
of these breakfast forums as you form your opinions about who is best to represent us. As always, register early online at dcrcoc.org. After election season, you know you can count on your Chamber to work with all of our elected officials to promote business-friendly legislation and create a climate that not only helps existing business grow, but also attracts new commerce to our area. We’ve been out front on lobbying the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to rethink the misguided capacity zone legislation, getting the scaffold law and item pricing law repealed and a lot more. I always say that if you don’t vote, you can’t complain. So after you meet and question the candidates, don’t forget to actually go out and vote on November 4.
Sincerely,
Charles S. North President & CEO

force and give them the same capabilities as if they were sitting in the office. Employees can work from anywhere and still present a unified and professional appearance when contacting customers. 3) More calls, no problem! Adding more staff to handle increased phone volume isn’t always practical for small businesses. With a hosted VoIP system that has both auto-attendant and callrouting features, you can cover more calls with the same or less staff if necessary. 4) Moving made easy. Based on your business needs, lines can be added or removed quickly and easily if you are relocating or
downsizing office space. 5) Expansion in minutes! If you are lucky enough to grow out of your current office space and are looking to add employees in a larger facility, you have the opportunity to order additional phones with a VoIP system and within a few minutes, you’ll have a fully connected workforce. This is much easier than adding or moving lines with a traditional phone system. Practical, efficient and costeffective are the “calling” cards of a business class Voice over IP system that will allow small businesses to reap benefits and hopefully push their business to that next level ahead of the competition. growing business is a problem every owner would love to have, but sometimes choosing the right communication systems can be a hurdle smaller businesses have a hard time overcoming when they are trying to expand. Voice over IP (VoIP) systems can be a great way to help smaller businesses expand and clear the communication hurdles that are slowing them down. Here are some key points: 1) You don’t have to be treated like a kid at the grown-ups table anymore! Using a business VoIP system gives you features like an auto-attendant, enabling you to route calls to a selection of extensions if you’re not big enough to employ a receptionist. This still gives you the control and ability to route calls in a professional manner. 2) Flex and stretch, near and far. Using a VoIP system can help a smaller business tie together their mobile and remote work-

Based in Poughkeepsie, the agency offers strategic public relations services designed to increase clients’ visibility among their target audiences, whether they are based in the Hudson Valley region, New York City or beyond. “In today’s incredibly compet-
itive marketplace, businesses both small and large can benefit from utilizing public relations tools -including press releases, articles, media outreach, speaking engagements and thoughtfully crafted copy -- to raise their profiles,” said Fanelli. The Chazen Companies, a leading provider of engineering, land surveying, planning, environmental and safety consulting, and landscape architecture services, is pleased announce the hiring of George Turner as Landscape Architect/Project Manager in our Capital District office. Turner will lead project design teams and manage projects from schematic designs through construction administration. Prior to returning to Chazen, Turner worked for M.J. Engineer-

Bob Mannino, CEO of Mannino Electric emphasizes, “This is a great deal for local businesses. It saves money, creates jobs, and helps to protect our environment. Our hope is that commercial buildings throughout the Hudson Valley will realize that solar energy is a low-cost alternative to
rising electricity prices.” For more on Mannino Electric and the services they offer please visit manninoelectric.com or call 845-452-3520. Learn to Run: the road to freedom by toni banner executive Coordinator, shaklee Corporation
Learn to Run Program Sponsored by:
e met at the pavilion by the antique caboose on the rail trail every Saturday morning at 9 a.m. for 10 weeks, rain or shine. My husband and I were nervous yet excited about the possibility of actually running for the first time since high school, many decades ago. On Day one we walked for two minutes and ran for one. It sounds so much easier than it actually was at the time. We stayed in the back of the pack and were surprised we could chat and run at the same time. Over time we started to run more than walk. One of the best parts was the health benefits: after completing the program we trained for three half-marathons, lost a combined total of 120 pounds, were able to stop taking all medication for blood pressure and cholesterol … and we felt better than ever! We now have freedom from the extra weight, pain and ex-
haustion. Exercise essential is for optimal and health, power walking, jogging and running is so great on the Hudson Valley Rail Trail. The Chamber’s Health and Wellness Club invites you to join us on your own journey for a better tomorrow. The Learn to Run Program begins on Tuesday, September 16, and we will meet each week through November 18 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at Moriarty Physical Therapy on Route 55 in Pough-
W
keepsie. Over the course of 10 weeks, participants will progress from non-runners to being able to run for 20 minutes without stopping. Most of the new runners will then complete their first 5K race in November. The program is limited to 50 participants; only those who have registered can take part. The cost is just $25 for members; $45 for non-Chamber members, and all participants must sign a waiver of liability form. For more information and to register, please visit the Health and Wellness page under Committees at dcrcoc.org or call 845-454-1700 ext. 1000. Learn to Run is sponsored by Moriarty Physical Therapy, with supporting partners Banner Lifestyles - Shaklee, Attain True Health and Topical Biomedics.

ummer vacation is usually a time to relax, hang out with your friends and tackle the summer reading list that your school handed out. Not this year. Not for 18 youth in our Summer Youth Employment Program. Why would 18 youths sign on to be childcare workers at a local gym, work the front desk at a dance studio or learn graphic design at a digital creative agency? Leadership Dutchess Class of 2015 announced
T
he Chamber Foundation is proud to introduce the Leadership Dutchess Class of 2015! After applying to the program and going through an interview process, these individuals were hand-selected to be a part of our 26th Leadership Dutchess class. This class represents a mix of backgrounds both professionally and personally, and each individual will add a unique element to create a dynamic class. Together they will not only learn the program curriculum, but they will also teach each other valuable lessons. We have an exciting nine months in store and cannot wait for the journey to begin. If you see one of these individuals, congratulate them and wish them good luck in this spectacular leadership experience!

Foundation Gala has many twists
O
n August 13, The Chamber Foundation held its signature event, The Twisted Gala. With 200 people in attendance, the event featured a
reverse drawing for a 2014 HarleyDavidson motorcycle from Woodstock Harley-Davidson. Only 100 chances were sold and every reverse drawing ticket holder won a
prize. Anticipation built as Charlie “Hound Dog” North and Denise “Snake Eyes” VanBuren pulled the numbers until the final two were left. Michael Cavaliere and Maureen Kangas then opted to split $8,000 in cash! Thank you to our sponsors, prize donors, Twisted Gala committee and attendees for making the event a success.
