re you getting the most out of your Chamber membership? The fall season is historically the Chamber’s busiest, so if you’re hoping to ramp up your exposure, I’d bet the Chamber’s fall lineup has the marketing mix for you. The best place to start is by visiting our website at dcrcoc. org and clicking on the “Events” tab. This will give you the best resource to know what is going on at the Chamber, and in the community as well, for the months of September and October. Both months have almost one event each day, so if you think the Chamber isn’t doing anything for you or your business, it means you aren’t getting involved. Do you regularly attend Ribbon Cuttings? Starry Starry night to benefit Walkway

long time ago I learned an important lesson – if you want to accomplish something truly great, you can’t do it alone. To that end, one of the most gratifying parts of my job is getting to work with so many great partners in and around Dutchess County. I’m so happy to have an ally in Dutchess County Government. They believe in the values of Think Local First and work tirelessly to promote and improve our home. Whenever we at the Chamber have the opportunity to work with our government - be it hosting a procurement seminar to help members do business with the county, or having Hudson Valley Young Professionals meet with members of the legislature to help keep the young people that come to school here living here - our partnerships are always positive and productive. And it’s not just government at the county level. I’m so happy to enjoy great working relationships with all the mayors, town supervisors and other elected officials out there that care so much about what our area is and can be in the future. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention agencies like the Dutchess County Economic Development Corporation, Dutchess County Tourism, and all the other

Chambers of Commerce too. The people there aren’t elected officials but rather fellow professionals who have dedicated their working lives to making our area better. We’ve done a lot of great work together in the past, and I look forward to accomplishing bigger and better things down the road. Lastly I love getting to work each and every day with the members of the Chamber. Whether I’m meeting with a small business owner and trying to come up with a marketing plan for them, or driving awareness about the products and services of one of our sponsors, I’m so happy to get to work alongside such a tremendous group of people who truly believe in the word community. I hope you all recognize what a special place the Hudson River Valley is to call home and do business. If you’re not as involved as you’d like to be, get in touch with me and we’ll talk about how you can be of service. There’s lots of work to do, but I’m confident that with the people we have here in Dutchess County, we’re going to get it done. Sincerely,
Charles S. North President & CEO PK-0000151376

he Chamber is proud to be a sponsor of the Walkway Over the Hudson’s annual benefit celebration Starry Starry Night, honoring the Stars of the Walkway. The event will be held on Friday, October 5. Honorary co-chairs Robert Dyson and Lucy R. Waletzky, the Walkway Board of Directors and the Walkway staff will recognize eight visionaries who helped bring the Walkway to fruition: Dick Coller, Claire Costantino, Bill Keating, Mitch Markay, Judy Moran, David Rocco, David Santner, and Fred Schaeffer. During the evening, friends of the Walkway will have the opportunity to gather high above the Hudson River for an evening filled
with the rich sounds of the Michael Dell Orchestra, delicious food, and a chance to view the stars up close with Hudson Valley astronomers. Last year, the event was attended by over 400 Walkway enthusiasts. Dollars raised by Starry Starry Night provide critical support for Walkway programs and bridge enhancements. Plans for a 21-story
glass-encased elevator, a visitor center, an outdoor amphitheater, and construction of a pavilion on the east approach are important ongoing efforts to help improve visitors’ experience at this worldclass attraction. Event tickets cost $150 each and the charitable contribution of each ticket is $75. Starry Starry Night will take place from 5:30-9 pm. Entrance will be at the Walkway’s west approach. Attire for the event is evening casual. If you have any questions please contact the Walkway Over the Hudson office at 845-454-9649 or visit www.walkway.org. For sponsorship opportunities, speak with Development Manager, Ellen Henneberry.
Festival raising oral cancer awareness
Growing at a rate of over 11 percent per year, oral cancer is one of the most debilitating cancers and is often detected late in development, when the possibility of the spread of the disease is significantly greater. Despite the risks and deadly effects, oral cancer awareness remains low. For the past seven years, Dr. Lawrence Hamburg, D.D.S. has helped to shine a spotlight on oral
cancer by hosting the Music Festival and Wellness Fair in support of the Oral Cancer Awareness Foundation (OrCA), which returns to the Hudson Valley on Saturday, September 15 at Freedom Park in Lagrange. There will be live music from the OrCA Blues Band, Bianca Carano, The Robert Cahill Band and more, as well as food, drink, raffles, auctions of music
and sports memorabilia, wellness vendors and most importantly free oral cancer screenings. For more information about the Music Festival and Wellness Fair, visit www.4orca.com. Any business wishing to become an event sponsor, place a personal message or ad in the event program or attend as a vendor should contact Marcy at 1-800-300OrCA or marcy@4orca.com.

asswords are something we can’t live without either at home or at the office to access applications, bank accounts, servers, networks and even email. These are the first line of defense against hackers, so the importance of a strong password can’t be stressed enough in order to protect your identity or sensitive data. Some things to consider when you are trying to create a secure password are mixed cases, as most passwords are case-sensitive. Using a variety of mixed-case letters and also including symbols, such as a percent or pound sign, also make it more difficult for hackers to guess your password. Ideally, your password should be between 6-8 characters. You’ll also want to try and select something that can be typed quickly before anyone nearby or behind you can notice the keys you’re select-
ing. The best option would be to create a password that is a random selection of letters, numbers and symbols – but make sure that you can remember it. You also want to make sure if any system or account provides you with a default password that you change it immediately to increase your security. Whatever you do, don’t use things like words from the dictionary, names or dates that are easily accessed. These patterns and general information can be easily picked up and used against you. You want to make sure that whatever you choose is not something you’ve shared with others or
easily deduced. Most important, it should never be written down for someone to easily copy without you knowing. Keep in mind also that your security questions should require answers that are not obvious or easily available. And make sure that you are using a different password for each account where it is required; if you are using the same password over and over, think of all the information a hacker could access. Keeping these tips in mind when you are creating passwords can keep you and your identity safe from harm. he Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce is proud to again host the annual “Think Pink For Breast Cancer Awareness” on Tuesday, October 2 at River Station Seafood and Steak Restaurant in Poughkeepsie. The event, put on in conjunction with the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation and American Cancer Society of Dutchess County, brings the business community together to raise awareness about local organizations working to aid breast cancer survivors and honors those currently in survivorship. Chamber president Charlie North will emcee the event. As the evening turns to night, Legion Fireworks will light up the sky with an amazing pyrotechnic display, and the New York State Bridge Authority will illuminate the Mid-Hudson Bridge in pink to mark the occasion. For more information about Think Pink and the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation, visit milesofhope.org. Miles of Hope was established to fund support services for people fighting breast cancer in the Hudson Valley. Dana Effron and Cathy Varunok started the Foundation in response to a need for increased services for people with breast cancer in the Hudson Valley. For years, Dana and Cathy raised money for national breast cancer organizations, but in 2004, they decided to focus their efforts on helping their friends and neighbors in the eight counties of the Hudson Valley. Think Pink is complimentary to attend and open to the public, however reservations are strongly recommended. To reserve your spot, call 845454-1700 ext. 1000. MEMBER neWSLine News... Marty Rutberg of Rutberg Basso Personal Injury Law proudly announced the promotion of Larry Breslow to Managing Partner. The firm also announced the hiring of Luke Malamood as Associate Trial Attorney, effective immediately. The firm now numbers a staff of 11 including 6 attorneys. “These appointments signal the strength and growth of Rutberg Basso in the personal injury realm. With these announcements, we reaffirm our commitment to gain justice for injured people and their families,” Rutberg said. With the harvest season in full swing, the Poughkeepsie Farmers’ Market will now be distributing $2 Fresh Connect checks with every $5 purchase made by customers using their EBT cards to access SNAP (formerly called food stamps) benefits. This program of the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, now in its second year, provided the local market in downtown Poughkeepsie with 500 checks to distribute in 2012. The market is held in Pulaski Park on Washington Street from 2 - 6 pm every Friday, rain or shine, until October 26. The Poughkeepsie Farmers’ Market exists to provide fresh, healthy, local each week to the City of Poughkeepsie. In addition to SNAP/EBT and Fresh Connect checks, the market accepts Farmers’ Market Nutrition Coupons (FMNP) for seniors and WIC recipients, debit cards and cash. Regular customer Valerie Taylor sums up her thoughts on what the market means for Poughkeepsie: “I think [the market is] truly a wonderful thing. People in a lot of [Poughkeepsie’s] neighborhoods don’t get a chance to get truly good food –
the market gives us a chance. [The market is] helping us to…get honest, good, earth food. A lot of our children have never even tasted a real, true, organic tomato. I’ve turned a lot of my friends onto [the food], and they’re like, wow, I didn’t know a tomato could taste that good.” Hudson River Housing will work intensively over the next three months with expert marketing consultants and local stakeholders to develop a marketing plan for Middle Main. The plan will include strategies to help Hudson River Housing reposition Middle Main Street’s image and brand in the regional housing market, which will be implemented over the following 6-18 months. The neighborhood marketing initiative fulfills a commitment NeighborWorks America made earlier this year at the Clinton Global Initiative America (CGI America) to work in new ways to stabilize and strengthen communities. The marketing initiative concept follows preliminary analysis that suggests communities hard hit by foreclosure face challenges of weak image and poor public perception, causing many prospective homebuyers, renters and small businesses to be wary of putting down roots in these neighborhoods. Hudson River Housing (HRH) develops and manages affordable housing in the community. For more information, please call (845) 454-5176 or visit www. hudsonriverhousing.org. Riverside Bank announced the appointment of Charles M. Andola as Riverside Bank’s Chairman of the Board of Directors. Andola is COO of United Apple Sales, Inc., in New Paltz. He has been a board member since March of 1990 and is one of the Bank’s Founders. He replaces Chairman Ira Effron, Co-Chairman of EFCO Products, Inc., in Poughkeepsie. Effron is also one of the Bank’s Founders and was Chairman of the Board since 2005. He will remain on the Riverside Bank Board as Director Emeritus. “This is a new and exciting time for Riverside Bank,” said John Davies, President & CEO. “With

Topical BioMedics, Inc., headquartered in Rhinebeck, is initiating a national media campaign to promote its Topricin line of natural biomedicine pain relief and healing creams. The SBA and KeyBank provided funding for the campaign. “Topical BioMedics was established in 1994, and since then the company has experienced steady growth,” says Lou Paradise, cofounder, president, and chief of research. “Our line of Topricin patented biomedicine formulas has become a leading natural ther-
apeutic brand, and the national media campaign is a natural evolution in our marketing strategy. Our trial test run of the campaign had a phenomenal response, and we are proceeding with it nationally the first week in August.” Topricin is available in pharmacies, natural food stores, and retailers nationwide, including Whole Foods, The Vitamin Shoppe, Fred Meyer, Wegmans and other fine stores, as well as directly from the company. Founded as a land surveying service by Milton Chazen in Poughkeepsie in 1947, The Chazen Companies are celebrating 65 years of providing professional consulting engineering, surveying, planning, environmental and landscape architecture services to clients throughout New York State and beyond. Brilliant, dynamic, determined, and driven to excel, Milton Chazen was a quintessential selfmade man who started the business with a single service and a sole employee – his wife, Fay. Over the years, “Milt,” a licensed land surveyor and professional engineer, and Fay grew the company, through good times and bad, until gradually turning the business over to their son, Richard, and son-in-law, Daniel Stone, beginning in the 1980s. Today, Chazen and Stone continue to be senior principals in the firm and The Chazen Companies remain rooted in the Main Street values upon which they were founded. With offices in Poughkeepsie, Troy and Glens Falls, The Chazen Companies have grown into a mid-size organization that operates regionally throughout New York State and portions of New England.

The voting period will conclude with the “Celebrate My Drive” event on Saturday, September 15 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Event attendees will receive complimentary VIN etching, coupons, giveaways, vehicle safety demonstrations and informational pieces from our local community about teen driving safety. Organizers are looking forward to providing the students and their families an opportunity to come celebrate the many aspects of becoming a new driver, their increased responsibility and provide an opportunity to get together as a community to show our support for a local school.
Kudos… On Thursday, August 2, Neave Pools a division of Neave Group Outdoor Solutions celebrated the Grand Opening of their new Cold Spring location. Several elected officials attended as well as representatives
and members from all four chambers. The local community is delighted to welcome Neave Group to Cold Spring. Neave has already beautifully renovated the interior and exterior of the property and is looking forward to a successful expansion into Cold Spring. First and foremost Neave group is a family owned and operated business. The Neave Family will soon celebrate 40 years in business with first and second-generation owners, Kathleen, Bill and Scott Neave and their General Manager, Mark Ciccarelli. As Charlie North, the President of DCRCOC noted during the ribbon cutting, Neave is a local family with a local business who always have and will continue to Think Local First. The Ulster Savings Charitable Foundation recently provided a $3,000 grant to the Mediation Center of Dutchess County in support of their Elder Abuse Coalition in Dutchess County program. The Coalition, founded in 2009 after a great response to the Mediation Center’s initial “World Elder Abuse Awareness Day in Dutchess County” event, has over 30 member agencies and individuals under the auspices of the Mediation Center. The Coalition’s goals are to increase public awareness about the signs and responses to elder abuse, provide training for professionals regarding elder abuse detection and intervention and increase collaboration between service providers, especially first responders. For more information about the Ulster Savings Charitable Foundation, please call MaryRose Warcholak at (845) 3386322, ext. 3626. Grace Smith House, a local nonprofit organization that supports women and children exposed to domestic violence, is happy to announce that Rhinebeck Bank provided much needed supplies for the agency’s Anniversary Celebration. Each year, Grace Smith House marks the birthday of the agency with a picnic for survivors, their families, staff and volunteers. Rhinebeck Bank delivered enough beach towels, swimmies and goggles and supplies for all. The staff of Grace Smith House works with the families who are
currently in the program on developing positive, productive, non-violent interactions focused on establishing a new definition of family after the terrors domestic violence. To learn more about the agency, visit www.gracesmithhouse.org. Community Foundations of the Hudson Valley and its affiliates Community Foundation of Dutchess County, Community Foundation of Putnam County and Community Foundation of Ulster County recently received notification that it has met the nation’s highest philanthropic standards for operational quality, integrity and accountability. The notice comes from the Community Foundations National Standards Board, a national accreditation organization based in Arlington, VA. The National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations program requires community foundations to document their policies for donor services, investments, grant making and administration. With over 500 community foundations already confirmed in compliance nationwide, the program is designed to provide quality assurance to donors, as well as to their legal and financial advisors.
“This is critically important to those who use the Community Foundation for their charitable giving,” said Andrea L. Reynolds, Community Foundations of the Hudson Valley president and CEO. “When people make a charitable bequest, establish a fund or set up a charitable trust, they are putting their confidence in us. They are counting on us to manage the investment wisely, honor their charitable wishes and, in some cases, provide lifetime income to a loved one. The National Standards confirmation says our house is in order.” Astor Services for Children & Families (Astor) received an $80,000 grant from the American Mental Health Foundation (AMHF) to develop and study early identification and palliative strategies for young people who are at risk for psychosis. The project, “Early Identification and Palliative Care for Psychotic Disorders in Children and Youth,” has been funded for one year with the possibility of continued funding for long-term follow-up. Astor’s Suzanne Button, Ph.D., Assistant Executive Director, Quality & Clinical Outcomes, is the lead investigator on this research project.

Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce, Thank you very much for allowing so many scholarships to be received through this organization. This foundation has helped so many people in the past, present, and future, and I am truly grateful how it has helped me. Enclosed is a thank you note for the Cosimo DiBrizzi family. If you could forward the letter to them, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you again for all you do. – Allison Meamey (recipient of Cosimo DiBrizzi Scholarship) Dear Charlie, Oh behalf of Mid Hudson Animal Aid, I wanted to extend a huge thank you for your hospitality at the Consumer Expo held on July 7 at the Galleria. The placement of our table by your staff could not have been better. As people came down the escalator, they couldn’t miss our table where we had 4 of our kittens on display. We took in an adoption application for a kitten as a result of our presence at the Expo. In addition, we handed out a “ton” of information flyers about our shelter and met many new faces in the community that might someday adopt a cat from or otherwise support our shelter. We appreciate the help you have provided Mid Hudson Animal Aid and assisting us find homes for our feline friends. Thank you for all you do for your member! – Mary Ann Bopp Member, Board of Directors Mid Hudson Animal Aid Dear Chamber, I would like to let you know that Kiki and I truly enjoyed the Gala Grand Prize stay at the Interlaken Inn. We received first class treatment beginning the week before our arrival with assistance and guidance related to the Grand Prix tickets. It was our first time to Lime Rock and we did not know what to expect. With help from Kevin, the GM, we were fully equipped and prepared to experience the excitement of our first auto race. This included protection from the slight drizzle and threat of worse that marked the day. The Interlaken staff accommodated our early arrival and presented us with our tickets. The resort was in great shape and we were able to make full use of the hiking trails, pool and lake. We also had two great gourmet meals served in the dinning room and also enjoyed the nightly entertainment. The prize was wonderful - the perfect getaway in close proximity to home. We would like to thank the Chamber and Interlaken and whoever picked our number out of the hat. – Steve & Kiki Williams
