T
he second print edition of the Chamber’s Business Directory for 2017 is coming soon and I hope you find it helpful when deciding on businesses to patronize. From dentists to veterinarians, contractors to CPAs, banks to grocery stores and everything in between, the printed directory is not just another one of the great resources for spreading the word about your business that the Chamber offers, but is a convenient catalogue of great local businesses, all who believe in and support Think Local First. In the meantime, the complete (and searchable) business directory is also online. Stay tuned
for more information on how the Chamber is working to improve the user-friendliness of the online platform, as well! If you know of a great Hudson Valley business not included in our directory, make sure to let Elena McPhee, our Director of Membership, know about them. She’ll quickly reach out and tell them all about the benefits of Chamber membership. The easiest way to make contact is to visit dcrcoc.org/referrals and fill out the simple form. With so many great businesses listed in one place, you’re bound to find some place new and worth visiting. It’s a core function of the Chamber to promote its membership. The Business Directory (both in print and online) are just a few of the ways we accomplish that goal, and I hope you take full advantage of them. Rita McPeck is the SBA Business Sales Officer for KeyBank. Reach her at (845) 483-3031 or rita_mcpeck@keybank.com

Password Protocol important to keep data safe By Jaime M. Butler
C
reating passwords for online accounts can sometimes feel like a huge hassle when trying to deal with character limits, types of characters, and other restrictions or requirements. However, it is extremely important to pay attention to proper password protocol to keep your identity and other information safe. With password breaches on the rise, make sure to follow these important guidelines: Get rid of old, overly used and poorly designed passwords. These are a risk to your identity, especially if you use one across a
variety of accounts. Don’t use the same password for every login. The most secure password is of no use if it will unlock every account. Start using a password manager to generate and keep record of unique passwords. Many such managers will also change passwords regularly. Use a service such as “Have I Been Pwned, which will validate email addresses and discover if they appear on any online account databases that have been compromised. Close old accounts. Anything not touched in months or even years should be removed or deactivated. Leaving

MEMBER NEWSLINE UFN announces new name, innovations Since first announcing its existence to the world, with its then industry shaking, “We don’t make a penny until you do!” payment structure, UFN has built a sterling reputation in the online floral industry. The company recently announced its latest innovations and new look and name — Lovingly — to florists across the U.S. and Canada. The three innovations enable florists to secure business and customer information with encrypted data and visible online security — preventing increasingly prominent “not safe” warnings from Google and others; redirect online stores to a “Designer’s Choice” product page on major holidays, streamlining business activity during high volume shopping; and provide shoppers with instant access to recipient addresses with an automated business lookup on checkout.

Angry Orchard launches collaboration cider East coast meets west coast with Understood in Motion 02, a new cider collaboration between Angry Orchard Hard Cider, America’s leading cider maker and E.Z. Orchards Cidre of Salem, OR, expert cider apple orchardists. This new cider was born of two American cider makers’ shared commitment to raising awareness of the cider industry, as well as their friendship and appreciation for apples. Collaborations like this, commonly popular among craft brewers, give cider makers the opportunity to combine techniques and apple varietals to develop something completely new, allowing drinkers to experience an innovative and unique cider. As the second release within this collaboration series, Understood in Motion 02 pays homage to traditional cider making, yet uses experimental wild fermentation techniques. Understood in Motion 02 is a dry, balanced cider that showcases a bittersweet apple flavor with notes of raw honey and oak. The collaboration cider will be available for purchase in select
locations in Oregon and Angry Orchard’s Cider House in Walden.

Spending time with people and just saying “good job” for their hard work is a proven and effective tool in assisting people in recognizing their full potential. In an article, written by Steve Keating, he states “people crave recognition. They crave recognition almost as much as they crave air to breath or water to drink.” In the Workforce Connections Program, we work to ensure that all of our participant’s hard work is

ykhale Brown is a young man with confidence. Early in June of 2016 he enrolled with Youth One Stop and set himself the goals of attaining his High School Equivalency Diploma, becoming employed, and enrolling in college. Just a few days later, Key Food, a grocery store in Beacon, hired him and a month after that, he attended his first HSE class at Youth One Stop. This was a bit of a tricky situation: Mykhale knew getting his diploma required consistent and frequent attendance in class, but
he also needed his job. His case manager suggested he speak with his instructor and his boss to work something out. Key Food agreed he could work evening shifts so Mykhale could attend

class during the day. It did not come easily; some mornings he would arrive exhausted having worked late the night before. However, in March, Mykhale sat for the exam and passed everything except for the writing section, which he missed by one point. It would have been easy to give up, but Mykhale knew his HSE was within reach if he kept pushing. In June, he tried again, and passed and when he came into the office, the Youth One Stop staff greeted him with a chorus of “congratulations!” Mykhale is taking a little time to himself before starting the enrollment process for college where he wants to study business administration courses with the ultimate goal of opening up a bridal gown and tailor shop. Youth One Stop is made possible thanks to a partnership with the Dutchess County Workforce Investment Board and the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Parents can help schools educate for sustainability By Jaimie Cloud, Omega Institute

eptember means back to school! And if you are a parent who wants your child to attend a school that educates for sustainability, you may have to help your school make the transition to this kind of curriculum by encouraging them to become an early adopter/leader. The U.S Department of Education defines a green school by three pillars: Reduced Environmental Impact and Costs, Improved Health and Wellness, and Effective Environmental and Sustainability Education. Begin the conversation with your child’s school by asking if they

have adopted any standards for education for sustainability, yet. If not, this is a perfect opportunity to explain the concept and express your desire to have sustainability principles be part of every aspect of your child’s learning experience. If the school has adopted some standards, find out what they are and how the school is implementing them. For a program to be successful, teachers and administrators will need support. As a parent, you can volunteer, become a member of the school board or green team, learn with your children at home, or lend your expertise. Stay informed about the best practices and emerging news in the industry, ensure teachers get the professional development they require, and make suggestions to keep the program flexible enough to adapt to the quickly changing world.
