Benefits of membership are plentiful

T

he approach of the Dutchess County Fair in August is a reminder of one of the many advantages of Chamber membership. At the Chamber’s Consumer Expo during the Dutchess County Fair, members can reserve booths from the Chamber for one, two or three days in the Distinctly Dutchess tent from Aug. 25-30. It’s a great way for local businesses to get broad public exposure at a lesser cost than purchasing a booth for the entire fair.

But this is just one of the many advantages to belonging to the Chamber. Members also have a variety of networking opportunities, including the monthly Business After Hours and Contact

Breakfasts in addition to speednetworking events like Early Bird Connections and Chamber Connections, in which participants deliver targeted messages about their businesses on a timed format.

Membership also includes access to monthly Business Education Seminars, which provide helpful insights on a variety of subjects. In May, the seminar looked at human resources laws

and how local businesses can avoid costly penalties by making sure they comply. In June, the focus was on how members can make the most of their Chamber memberships.

Members can also look to the Chamber to be their advocate in the community by creating events that spur economic activity, such as the balloon festival and the Business Expo coming up in October.

All in all, it’s a great time to take advantage of everything the Chamber has to offer. I encourage you to join if you aren’t already a member, and if you are member, I look forward to seeing you out at the many great events coming up this summer and fall.

he Chamber’s July Business After Hours event will be held from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, July 22 at Gusto in Poughkeepsie. The event will feature complimentary hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar, and raffles will be held.

New Workforce Development program helps teens learn to earn

D

o you remember your first summer job? I do.

I can look back with a smile and remember the things I learned and the friends that I made. In many ways, it was an simpler time. Jobs were pretty easy to find, and the pace seemed slower than today.

I bring this up because we just launched our Teen Learn and Earn Program, in which we match high school youth and young adults with employers. We have 18 youth working in local communities from Poughkeepsie to Beacon. The youth were selected from our programs last month based on program compliance and an eagerness to work.

The teens will work Monday through Thursday and attend short job-readiness team meeting trainings on Fridays where they will learn the skills necessary to maintain employment.

The idea behind Teen Learn and Earn is for youth to have meaningful job experiences.

They take both career and skills assessments, and this information is used to place them, when possible, at a job where they can explore their interests. For youth who are unsure what they “want to be when they grow up,” we use the skills assessment to place them in a position that matches the skills they already have and those they want to acquire. This can be a big undertaking, but our workforce team is up to the task.

Last summer, we had a young woman who wants to open a dance studio when she is older.

She worked all summer as the receptionist at a local dance studio. She began college in the fall studying business and still works at the studio part time.

This summer, we placed a recent Poughkeepsie High School graduate who plans to study ac-

counting at Dutchess Community College in the fall with an assistant director of finance. Among our other students set to work in local hospitals and other businesses is a young man who will

work in a dental office.

These employment opportunities are very important for our youth. Learning to get someplace consistently on time,

perform work-related tasks satisfactorily and get along with others are skills that can be learned.

The Teen Learn and Earn program is designed to help our young people become our future skilled workforce.

Balloon Festival reflects Chamber’s broader mission

T

his month, during our 25th Anniversary Hudson Valley Hot-Air Balloon Festival from July 1012, you’ll see color fill the skies as a record 25 balloons are launched on the Poughkeepsie waterfront near Shadows on the Hudson, at Migliorelli Farm in Red Hook and at Dutchess County Airport.

While this promises to be a phenomenal family event – and our biggest and best balloon fest ever – it also reflects the Chamber’s mission of encouraging the support and participation of local businesses and strengthening our community.

Events like the Balloon Festival draw thousands of people to our region and introduce them to all the Hudson Valley has to offer. As people come from around the country to see the Balloon Festival, they will stay in our local hotels, dine in our restaurants and explore our rich diversity of historic and natural destinations. We’re sure many of them will fall in love with the Hudson Valley and want to come back, bringing even more busi-

ness to our community.

Just as importantly, events like the Balloon Festival provide a strong incentive for our own residents to stay local on a prime mid-summer weekend.

Instead of heading off to some distant destination, the event gives them that much more reason to stay right here in the Hudson Valley and spend their time and money in their own community.

Baseball blitz to benefit Foundation Student mentees graduate Nicholas Shannon Executive Director

n August 5, join The Chamber Foundation for an evening of baseball and a whole lot of fun. After the game, a helicopter will fly over Dutchess Stadium and drop nearly 2,000 baseballs onto the field. The ball that falls into or closest to the targeted area will win $2,000, and there will be other prize opportunities throughout the evening.

Baseballs will be sold in advance for $10 (no baseballs will be sold on the day of the game).

Ball purchasers do not have to be present to win. A special gameday package is also available that includes a ticket to the game and a baseball for the drop.

In large part, this event is thanks to the Leadership Dutchess Class of 2014, since it was created under their direction as part of their class fundraising challenge project. The enthusiasm their seamless event created and the partnerships it built motivated the Foundation to bring the event back again this year. On June 3, The Chamber Foundation held a recognition dinner at the Villa Borghese in Wappingers Falls for 75 Youth Leadership students some of whom were completing their final year with the program. Youth Leadership is an innovative program designed to foster the academic, social and life skills of local high school students.
