Local high school students take center stage as The Chamber Foundation, the not-for-profit educational organization of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce, proudly presents over $50,000 in scholarships to those looking to further their education in the Hudson Valley and beyond. With some scholarships already presented in the fall, this brings the total awarded during 2014-15 to nearly $55,000.

Chamber Foundation scholarships range from very broad to very specific in scope, some offered to students across disciplines, while others are precisely targeted for those pursuing a career in music, journalism, culinary arts, and more. Making a difference by giving back

A

s you probably saw on the front page of this newsletter, the Chamber’s monthly Contact Breakfast in May will feature The Chamber Foundation’s annual presentation of scholarships to area students.

This is one my favorite events of the year, as its inspiring to see how our business community comes together to give back in such an important way.

We are all asked for donations and contributions throughout the year, and we all have to make choices about which causes we support. In the case of The Chamber Foundation, Inc., the benefits to the Hudson Valley are clearly evident. And the support through-

out the year of Foundation events, as well as its annual campaign, makes an event like this possible.

Events like the Foundation’s Bowling Tournament, Day of Golf, or the recent Cosimo DiBrizzi Celebrity Servers Dinner (see highlights on page 14), all help benefit these scholarships. And this year more than $50,000 will be awarded at our breakfast.

Keeping young people in Dutchess County should be a priority for us all. The last thing we want is for quality high school graduates to go out of town to college and then never come back.

We have many multi-generational businesses here, including my own, and that is one of the ways we keep the economic engine humming. And one of the ways we Think Local First.

So please join me and my fellow Board of Directors members at the May 20 Contact Breakfast to salute and congratulate these scholarship winners. They are not only our present shining examples of success, but they are also our future.

he warm weather is finally here and businesses are back into the full swing of spring.

Many proprietors have mentioned to me that the recent winter took a considerable toll on sales in their businesses, and now they are working twice as hard to make up for lost time. The snow and cold weather kept people from leaving their homes, from dining in restaurants and from shopping at retailers. This is lost revenue for businesses, and it is all the more reason we need to support local companies by Thinking Local First.

earable tech products can help you monitor, communicate, track or log your fitness progress and there are a variety of options available in today’s marketplace. Here are just a few of the top rated items you may want to add to your gym bag.

The Pebble Steel – never heard of it? This smart watch works with both iOS and Android so it can be linked with a variety of phones and devices, but by far its most attractive features are its waterproof and battery life qualities.

You can wear this during your workout, no matter what it may be, and then hop in the shower without any worries you’ll damage it. Walkway presents Marathon day

T

he Chamber is proud to help support Walkway Over the Hudson’s first-ever Marathon, taking place on Saturday, June 13 in partnership with Dutchess County Government.

More than 2,000 runners have already registered for the event.

Athletes will compete in one of three fast and flat USATF-certified

races, all of which traverse Walkway State Historic Park. Registrants thus far hail from 24 states and 5 countries.

The race series serves as one of the Walkway organization’s primary fundraiser, with contributions from the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce and several other area businesses.

Besides the magnificent scen-

ery and virtually flat course, the Walkway Marathon is a certified qualifying race for the Boston Marathon and organizers have taken the “Pledge of Sustainability” issued by Athletes for a Fit Planet to be recognized as the first green marathon in New York State.

Working with youth is challenging, inspiring by louise Mcloughlin vice President of Workforce development

“What is it like working with youth?” This is a question I am often asked, and depending on the day you ask you might get a different answer.

After getting off a school bus with close to 30 Poughkeepsie High School youth and chaperones after attending Construction Career Day in Rockland County, I would say it is rewarding to be present when a young person discovers a career field of interest. After attending a tutoring session with 15 youth in our YES program funded through

the Department of Community and Family Services, I would say I empathize with our youth who are struggling in school and working hard to pass their classes. But it is the times when our participants make me proud to do what I do that really stands out for me.

I was recently asked to be a panelist at the Poverty Forum at Catherine Street Community Center. I was asked to inform the public on the programs that the Chamber offers to youth, tell the group what our youth think about poverty, and make some basic recommendations to improve the lives

of our local youth who live below the poverty level. Well, I can easily explain the Chamber programs but I didn’t want to speak for the young people, so we put together a survey on poverty and asked youth from our programs at Poughkeepsie High School (Career Action Center), the Youth One Stop and our YES program to respond. A total of 86 youth responded to the survey.

I invited the youth to attend the Poverty Forum with me and asked four of them to stand up and share

some of the results. Eight of our youth attended and were able to stand up and identify themselves.

Four of them shared the results of the survey; they spoke clearly and were professional.

We (myself, the case managers, mentors and our DCRCOC President/CEO Frank Castella, Jr.) were all very proud.

This is what they shared: 91% believe that poverty is a problem in Dutchess County; 67% think they “should have the right to participate, influence and have power over the issues that affect their lives”; 47% believe that youth organizations “contribute to the strengthening of de-

mocracy and the respect for human rights”; 69% “believe that they should play a significant role in the reduction of poverty in Dutchess County”; and 43% said “I am not actively involved in discussions on this issue but would like more information.”

Helping youth express their opinions and learn about their community through civic engagement strengthens our community.

Having the opportunity to assist a youth on this path is a privilege. So, the next time I am asked, “what is it like working with youth?” I may just say “it’s awesome!”

Spring back to running outdoors

T

he snow has melted… the birds are chirping… and spring is FINALLY HERE! You have spent countless hours training on a treadmill to get you in shape for the upcoming Marathon at the Walkway Over the Hudson. Now you are ready to take your training outdoors and ramp up your training. There is only one problem… treadmill running and outdoor running are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT! Here are a few tips to get you back outdoors, prepare you for upcoming any events safely, and help you avoid any future injuries that will bring you back indoors!

Soft Feet Equal Less Pain Start your outdoor runs on some of the local dirt trails or on a spongy high school track. These surfaces are more forgiving to the knee and ankle joints than the pavement can be. Then slowly progress to asphalt surfaces and concrete.

Take Your Time on Those Hills You might have been able to pump up the incline on the treadmill, but natural hills outside can be much steeper. This steeper incline combined with wind resistance can make these hills even more a challenge. Don’t be afraid to slow to a walk to reach the top of the hill.

Descending the hill can also be rough on the knees and the quads, so take your time to avoid injury during your early runs.

Ease Your Body Into The Outdoors Move your runs from the treadmill to the road and trails gradually to allow your joints time to acclimate to the new running surface. This can be accomplished by adding one or two new outdoor runs to your program each week, so over time you are running completely outside. Run shorter distances at first, gradually increasing your time and distance. Running too much too soon can cause pathology such as shin splints.

Plan Your Runs There are multiple applications for your smart phone devices to help you map out your runs before you hit the road. This will help you gauge the distance and the terrain of your run so you don’t bite off more than you can chew!

Accidents CAN and DO happen… and you don’t want to be stranded with an injury, without the ability to get help, or the ability to make a phone call for assistance. Running with an ID or Road ID bracelet is also a smart idea, in the horrible case that you are unconscious and someone needs to contact family members to assist you. Running outside means you’ll encounter other people, cars, and dogs, so keep the volume of your iPod down so you can hear what’s going on around you. Don’t forget the sunscreen and any other protective gear like sunglasses or a hat that you’ll need in the elements.

Listen to Your Body Your body is constantly talking to you… during any of your training, if the engine light is blinking “PAIN”… don’t keep training… STOP! Overtraining is a HUGE problem in runners.

Your form may be incorrect, you may have structural imbalances in your muscles and joints, or you may be training COMPLETELY WRONG.
