Message from the Chair: Frank Castella, Jr. The Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce is kicking off another great year with An All-American Affair, our 2012 themed Annual Gala. This event is especially meaningful to me, as it exemplifies one of the most rewarding and unique attributes of our Chamber – recognizing deserving family businesses, Community Spirit and a Good Neighbor. For the Good Neighbor Award, our selection committee has chosen LCS Facility Group and the Lepore family. The Community Spirit Award is given to Carole Wolf of Mill Street Loft, and the Next Generation Awards recognize the Baright family of Foam and Wash and the Porco family of Villa Borghese.
The Grand Prize for our Chamber Gala was provided by Interlaken Inn, a Chamber member based in Lakeville, Ct. Interlaken’s “American Le Mans Package” consists of: • A two-night stay from Saturday, July 7 – Monday, July 9 • A three-course dinner for two on Saturday and Sunday nights • A New England breakfast for two on Sunday and Monday mornings • Two tickets to the “American

These deserving individuals, families and businesses are household names in the Hudson Valley. Their success is due in part to their community involvement and generosity – always giving to the place they live. All of us have likely attended an event where Carole Wolf was present, likely recognizing the Baright Family, sponsored by LCS and held at the Villa Borghese…or mix it up any which way. These names are not only local legends and friends to the Hudson Valley, but they are the finest example of successful business leaders Dutchess County has to offer. The Chamber is proud and honored to have each of
them as apart of our family. Congratulations go to each of them for an honor well deserved.

Starting in 2012, The Workforce Development department of the Chamber is growing. Through a contract from the Dutchess County Department of Social Services, the Chamber has implemented The Step-Up Program, which offers local employers the opportunity to hire trained individuals and to receive a wage subsidy for a period of time. The wage subsidy agreement is based on the technical aspects of the job, skills required and various other factors. There are currently over a dozen participants in The StepUp Program, with total enrollment expected to grow continuously through 2012. Perhaps the most innovative new initiative North unveiled during his “State of the Chamber” is the creation of Online Ribbon Cuttings. As Chamber President and CEO Charlie North delivered his “State of the Chamber” address in mid-January, he focused on all the new and exciting initiatives the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce is pursuing during the next 12 months and beyond. Headlining the list of advancements is a new look for the Chamber itself. With help from Full Deck Design, the Chamber has redesigned its official logo, leading to a stylish and modern representation of the Mid-Hudson Bridge, long the symbol of strength in the Hudson Valley, to serve as the Chamber’s avatar. The Chamber Foundation, Inc., the not-for-profit educational arm of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce, also has a fresh logo, a new take on its classic acorn motif, to go along with its new website that can be found at www. ChamberFDN.org. North also re-introduced the Chamber’s renewed commitment to backing the SmartCard, a free discount program eligible to everyone who is either a Chamber member themselves or works for a Chamber member. Users simply show their SmartCard when patronizing a participating Chamber member’s business in order to receive their discount. All local businesses offering a SmartCard perk are listed

After scheduling a mutually agreeable time, the Chamber staff photographer will complete a photo essay showcasing the business cutting a ribbon, and North will provide his commentary about what said organization brings to the local community. The entire package will be attractively edited together and posted on a dedicated ribbon-cutting webpage, which is entirely shareable via social media, e-mail, or however else a member wants to spread the word. Between the Chamber and the Foundation’s new look, a recommitment to the SmartCard, a new Workforce Development program and the creation of Online Ribbon Cuttings, 2012 is a better time than ever to join the Dutchess

by Charles S. North In the State of the Chamber address at the January breakfast (see page 3 for a summary), we focused quite a bit on events and new initiatives taking place in the coming year. We’ll focus more on The Chamber Foundation, Inc., at our May breakfast, when we award scholarships from the Foundation. It’s one of my favorite events of the year because we help young people realize their dreams of continuing their education. Hopefully in January you saw one of our billboards around Dutchess County. They featured our new Foundation logo and the name of our brand-new, snappy website www.chamberfdn.org. But it also said that scholarships are now available. We awarded more than $30,000 in scholarships last year, and applications are being accepted until April 1. There are 11 categories – everything from academic to leadership to music. These scholarships would not be possible without the generosity of the Hudson

River Valley Region’s business community. As spring approaches, our Foundation, led by Director Karolyn Osborne, is planning events that not only provide entertainment but also support what our Foundation does, including these scholarships. There’s Bowling coming up this month, April’s Cosimo DiBrizzi Celebrity Servers, the Annual Day of Golf in June, and the Reverse Drawing in July, among others. More information on these events, as well as updates on Leadership Dutchess and Youth Leadership, is available on page 14 as well as the Foundation’s website. Please take a few moments to learn more about what the Foundation is doing and how you and your business can help. It’ll be worth your time. And what’s better than putting a smile on a young person’s face! Sincerely,

Workforce Development Center New Step-Up Program Offered to Help Add Jobs in 2012 The Workforce Development Center at the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that it is partnering with the Dutchess County Department of Social Services to offer a new program. The Step Up program, funded in part by the County of Dutchess, began in January 2012 and offers local employers the opportunity to hire trained
individuals and to receive a wage subsidy for a period of time. The wage subsidy agreement is based on the technical aspects of the job, skills required and various other factors. Program participants are referred based on income qualification and will be enrolled in training programs for CNA, PCT, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, auto
repair, secretarial, office work and customer service. The Chamber is currently working with over a dozen participants that will be starting training shortly. Interested businesses with current or future job openings or apprenticeship opportunities should call Mercy Turugh at the Chamber at 845-454-1700 x 1001 for more information.

By: Jaime Butler, Business Development Specialist time. Striking the right balance between survey length and getting the data you actually need to see how you’re performing with your customers is not an easy thing to do, but here are some tips that might help: • Use enticing copy on both the invitation and the welcome page of your survey. A clearly stated time commitment should be easy to find. • Keep sensitive questions for the latter part of the survey. Don’t scare off your respondents right off the bat with a controversial question, let them warm up to it and put it at the end of your survey. • Try the advanced tools that are available online. Online tools can give survey authors a wider array of tools to use to
tailor the survey to the people they are trying to connect with, like using branch logic, which routes the users to the questions that pertain the most to them because of previous answers given. • Create additional invitations. The respondents to your first survey may also be the proper target for a second or third survey, so you can try sending them additional invitations after they complete the first survey. It’s also less stress on the survey author so the initial survey could be kept much shorter if there are additional opportunities to dig deeper into an issue. Maybe you’ve started the new year thinking that you really need a better understanding of your client base, their needs and how you are performing when you attempt to meet their needs. Anonymous surveys that your customers fill out can provide you with valuable data so you can tailor your products or services to what your customer base is really after, however it’s important to make sure you’re not overloading them when you are trying to get this information. Those who have the task of putting surveys together are then left to deal with the struggle of adding that one additional question while they worry about customers ignoring the survey completely because it takes up too much of their

Family Services is pleased to announce that Leah Feldman is the recipient of the 2011 President’s Award, an honor presented each year to a Family Services employee who distinguishes him or herself in exemplifying the values espoused by Family Services. In the past year Domestic Violence services and systems have been undergoing a high degree of scrutiny and analysis. Feldman, who is an integral part of Family Services’ Battered Women’s Services, serving as the County’s Universal Response to Domestic Violence Coordinator, has been at the
forefront of that analysis. She has been charged with strengthening the universal response to domestic violence in Dutchess County during this critical time. A comprehensive review of the system was completed for the Dutchess County Legislature, which included a comprehensive set of recommendations. These recommendations led to an increase in funding for Domestic Violence services, despite cuts in many other areas. It also led to an increase in offender accountability measures and changes in State legislation.

THE CHAMBER FOUNDATION, INC
The Foundation Perspective By: Karolyn Osborne, Foundation Director To an outsider, they might look like run of the mill teenagers -sporting the latest in sneakers, fashion and cell-phone technology -- but these local youths are doing much more than their household chores to ensure a prosperous future for the Hudson Valley area. Each year, more than 100 teenagers participate in The Chamber Foundation’s Youth Leadership Program. Funded in part by The Gap Foundation, this innovative 4-year program is a collaborative effort of the Beacon and Spackenkill Central school districts, helping to develop leadership and life skills for our area youth. One of the most challenging periods of the program takes place during the sophomore year, when students participate
in a virtual enterprise through the Junior Achievement Program (JA is a nationally accredited program created and distributed by Junior Achievement of America; this program is facilitated by a Chamber business volunteer). Students work in cooperation with local business leaders to design, capitalize and run their own business. The program uses hands-on experiences to help the students understand the economics of life. It brings the real world to students, opening their minds to their full potential. This year’s class has created a company called “Limited by None”, and has sold more than 120 shares of stock. They have put into a production a t-shirt that they will be selling at the
Bowl-A-Thon, Chamber events and some local malls. Students are required to make sales both independently and as a group. Overall, Junior Achievement is one of the most valuable portions of the Youth Leadership program. Students often refer back to this program as being the time they learned the most skills that will positively influence their future. For more information about Junior Achievement please visit our website at www.chamberfdn. org or contact me at 845-4541700 ext. 1026. Special thanks to the Gap, Inc., for its generous support of the Youth Leadership program. Through their support we continue to make a valuable and tangible difference in the lives of our area youth.

Leadership Dutchess Aluminaries Stephanie Baran, Leadership Dutchess Class 2010, Branch Manager, Assistant Vice President, M&T Bank, Beacon 1.) What is your favorite Leadership Dutchess session, and why? My favorite session was the Team Building session with Christ Short. I think that he is incredibly motivating and it was the best way to bring together a group of people who have never worked together in the past. I found it to be an engaging class. 2.) What makes a good leader? Patience. If you do not have patience with people, then you have no place being a leader. A leader should also be humble. The most influential leader in my life always sat beside her team, never stood up front. 3.) How has this experience enhanced your career? This experience reinforced my desire to be a leader. My passion
is helping people, specifically those that I work with at M&T Bank and the customers that I meet each day. I met a lot of wonderful contacts through the program that have helped me become a stronger leader, both in the community and at my job. 4.) What prompted you to participate in Leadership Dutchess? Each year M&T Bank puts a participant through the program. I have worked with both Tina Walz, co-chair of the Leadership Dutchess Committee, and Rosie Giammatteo, a graduate of the program as well. I look to both of them as leaders and saw this as an opportunity to develop my skills as well. For more on Leadership Dutchess, visit www.facebook. com/LeadershipDutchess or www.chamberfdn.org.

Community Spotlight Special Olympics - Polar Plunge Looking for a great opportunity to give back? If you can handle the cold waters, then you can help support Special Olympics New York and their Fishkill Polar Plunge. Special Olympics New York is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization and is funded primarily by donations from individuals, corporations and foundations and is supported by over 29,000 volunteers. By holding fundraisers throughout the year, the organization can continue its mission to provide quality sports-training in 22 Olympics-style sports for all children and adults with
intellectual disabilities. One of the biggest local fundraisers is the Fishkill Polar Plunge (Freezin’ for a Reason) on Saturday, February 25. In its 14th year, the annual polar plunge event takes place at the Sharpe Reservation in Fishkill with registration beginning at 9 a.m., and the “plunge” starting at noon. The organization is still recruiting brave souls to participate by taking the plunge and raising funds for the organization through pledges. Each participant is encouraged to raise $100 and receive an official polar plunge sweatshirt as an incentive.
“The event is truly inspirational,” says Teresa Gilli, Associate Director of Development. “It is so wonderful to see the athletes’ excitement and smiles as they jump in with everyone else!” To register for the Fishkill Polar Plunge, log on to www. polarplungeny.org and click on “register here” under the Fishkill Polar Plunge. MEMBER TESTIMONIAL “I just wanted to express my thanks for introducing my staff and I to the Chamber. I attended the New Member Luncheon last week and was totally thrilled with being able to participate in such a positive event. One of my representatives attended the recent Chamber Connections Speed Networking event. She was still in the parking lot and couldn’t wait to call me to tell me what an outstanding time she had! We are so fortunate to have such a powerful leadership team in the Dutchess County Chamber. We can’t stop talking about the opportunities that the Chamber has afforded us. - Deb Leto, Verizon FIOS - Wappingers Store Read more testimonials or write your own by visiting www.dcrcoc.org, click on Members and Member Testimonials from the drop-down menu.
