etwork to the sounds of the season at the Chamber’s December Contact Breakfast on Wednesday, December 19 from 7:30-9 a.m. at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel and Conference Center. While guests dine and discuss business, the musical stylings of the Roy C. Ketcham Choir, Arlington High School Brass Ensemble, FDR High School Choir and Poughkeepsie High School Choir will delight the crowd and fill the room with holiday cheer.

In addition to bringing nametags and business cards, staples of any networking event, guests at the December Contact Breakfast are also encouraged to bring canned and dry goods for donation to those in need.

The Chamber’s Ambassador Committee has partnered with Dutchess Outreach to help the lessfortunate among us, and any support is greatly appreciated.

It has been an honor to serve as Chairman of the Board for the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce. I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the Board of Directors, membership and staff for allowing me this fine privilege. I know for certain the Chamber has some form of positive influence on every resident in our region. The avenues of impact have undoubtedly reached into every home and business.

The Chamber has become a powerful voice to making a difference for the benefit of businesses, as well as every citizen living here.

he Chamber’s annual Forty Under 40 Shaker Awards will be presented on April 23, 2013. Nominations are now being accepted.

Do you know an outstanding person under the age of 40 who is making a positive impact in the community? If so, nominate them for a Shaker Award, an honor presented annually to the rising stars in the region.

A strong nominee is between the ages of 18-39 and is committed to making the Hudson Valley a better place to live, give back, work hard, play hard, and ultimately put down roots.

Successful candidates might be a young business leader, a trailblazer with a new idea, someone who shows an outstanding

dedication to volunteerism, or just a person who, in their own way, makes a difference day in and day out.

To make a nomination, complete the electronic form located at www.dcrcoc.org. Nominators will be asked to include background on their nominees’ professional achievement, community involvement, and what sets them apart from their peers.

‘Tech’ the halls this holiday season

by Charles S. North As many of you know, the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce has a Board of Directors, like many not-for-profit organizations. Our Board is very active, holding regular meetings to be updated on the day-to-day operations, long-term strategic planning and any issues that are occurring within the Chamber. The Chamber Foundation has its own Board of Directors.

The Chamber Board’s Chair is responsible not only for leading the Board but also keeping an eye on all the chairs running the Chamber’s other committees. It’s a big job, and a volunteer position as well.

For the last year, the Chair of our Board has been Frank Castella, Jr., of Harmon and Castella Printing. Frankie’s term is about to end, and he will be replaced by incoming Chair Jill Sammon of Central Hudson Gas and Electric Corp.

Frankie’s energy and enthusiasm have been an asset to the Chamber ever since he first became a fixture at events, Board meetings and even helping to run and grow our Young Professional organization. He is a tireless worker at his family printing business, continuing in the success of his father.

But it’s how Frankie gives back that is so impressive. He has

volunteered for such organizations as Saint Francis Hospital Foundation, the Dutchess County Arts Council and the Alzheimer’s Association.

And, as Chair of our Board the past year, Frankie has been front and center helping Dutchess County businesses and organizations succeed as part of the Chamber.

It has been the Chamber’s good fortune to have Frankie as the Chair of our Board. He is not only a great ambassador for the Chamber, but he and his family business are the epitome of Think Local First.

So, on behalf or our Chamber staff and the more than 2,100 members of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce, I want to publicly thank Frank Castella Jr. for serving as our Board Chair so admirably this last year. We are going to miss his leadership, but he won’t be far away. And that’s just fine with me.

The Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce two winners of awards being presented at its annual Gala coming up in February.

Lisa Morris, Director of Marketing at Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union, will be presented with the Community Spirit Award. The award is giving annually to an individual that visibly embraces the community in order to make it a better place to live and work.

A former ATHENA Award honoree, Lisa serves as a Board Member for Dutchess Outreach and is involved with numerous organizations including The American Red Cross of Dutchess County, New Horizons Inc., Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson, and the American Cancer Society.

She is a past chair for events including 2008 Eleanor Roosevelt Val-Kill Annual Medals Ceremony, the Chamber’s ATHENA Award, the American Heart Association Heart Walk and Walk Telethon, and Best of the Hudson Valley Party to benefit the March of Dimes.

Vanacore, DeBenedictus, DiGovanni & Weddell, LLP will be presented with the Good Neighbor Award. The award is presented annually to a local business that demonstrates great corporate citizenship through volunteerism and support of the community and our non-profit partners.

VDDW supports many community-based organizations, but they are most passionate about working with those groups that directly make a measurable difference in people’s lives by securing resources and developing relationships to build a stronger, more vibrant community. One of those organizations is the United Way of the Dutchess-Orange region, and the firm’s employees volunteer with dozens of others as well.

These financing opportunities help small businesses and not-for-profits access upfront capital to make energy efficiency upgrades in their buildings to improve their energy efficiency and lower their energy bills. Free energy audits are available to small businesses and not-for-profits with an average electric demand of 100 kW or less.

NYSERDA partners with lenders across New York State to help small businesses and not-for-profits access low-interest financing for energy efficiency improvements.

NYSERDA provides 50% of a loan, up to $50,000, at 0% interest, and the lender provides the rest of the loan at market rate. Lenders can now offer energy efficiency financing at about half the market rate to small business and not-for-profits statewide.

NYSERDA also offers a lowinterest On Bill Recovery financing option that makes it possible for small businesses and not-forprofits to use the savings on their energy bills to pay for their energy efficiency upgrades. The Poughkeepsie Public Library District was recently awarded a $100,000 grant from the Dyson Foundation to support the District’s Public Computer Center (PCC), which provides muchneeded computer training and Internet availability to residents who may not otherwise have access to computers. The PCC consists of four trained Technology Instructors working with 20 laptop computers and assisted by an IT professional.

Poughkeepsie residents with limited or no access to the Internet are at a severe disadvantage in locating and applying for jobs. There are also many people who are unfamiliar with, and even intimidated by, computer technology and who need basic introductory classes.

Others simply need to improve their computer skills in order to progress in their current jobs.

The PCC also responds to the needs of those members of our community who have decided to open a small business. Classes such as Outlook 101; Mail Merge in Word and Excel; Summarizing

Renaissance Kids presents a special event for the holiday season. “Parents Get Things Done While Kids Have Fun Day� is scheduled for Saturday, December 8 from noon-6 p.m. This will be a day for parents to get ready for the holidays while their children learn some skills, make some gifts, and have fun!

This special workshop for children ages 4-12 will provide plenty of activities including painting, photography, puppetmaking, acting, singing, music, crafts, and more. All students will receive a bag at the end of the day filled with their projects and hand-made gifts as well as a goody bag for themselves. Annual toy drive helps local kids enjoy the holidays

he Hudson Valley Young Professionals (HVYP) have partnered with Foam & Wash Car Wash to collect new, unwrapped toys for less fortunate children in the community this holiday season. Last year, over 15 boxes filled with presents went to benefit local children, and the HVYPs are hoping to impact even more lives this year. Anyone interested in supporting the HVYPs Annual Toy Drive is asked to make their donation during regular business hours at any Foam & Wash location, the Chamber offices in Poughkeepsie, or during the December Business After Hours at Le Chambord Restaurant in Hopewell Junction on December 12. The Education Committee has reformatted itself and is now known as the Youth Development Committee, focusing on our Youth Leadership Program and how we can build upon our successes for the 2013-14 program year.

Special panel will discuss healthcare The Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce is presenting a panel discussion on healthcare on Wednesday, December 5 from 4:30-6 p.m. at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel and Conference Center.

This is the first of a series of workshops dealing with the Affordable Health Care Act. This workshop is a panel discussion with major hospitals in both Dutchess and Orange counties, as well as representatives from Marshall & Sterling
