t’s November, and that means the start of the holiday shopping season is near. As you head to the stores, please remember to Think Local First. Hudson Valley merchants have practically everything you could possibly want -- whether it’s gifts, décor, festive foods, or more. It might seem easier to handle your gift buying with a few swift clicks in cyberspace, but there might be something even more unique and special at a local shop. Best of all, when you shop local, your tax dollars go back into our community, which benefits everyone who lives

here. When the local economy is thriving, local organizations, government, and the overall community are stronger and more vibrant. That’s the principle behind Small Business Saturday, coming up on November 26th. The day after Black Friday, Small

Business Saturday is a great time to support your local community. The Chamber has partnered with American Express in promoting Small Business Saturday since 2010. Last year, participants generated more than $5.5 billion in economic impact. If you want to get involved, visit dcrcoc.org/shopsmall. I invite you to get acquainted with local businesses on Small Business Saturday—and every day this holiday season and Think Local First. Keller coaches, mentors, trains, and Keller super vises a team of 20 culinary arts faculty; facilitates the development and revision of the core curriculum, and supports student learning. She serves as a member of the internal review committee, monitoring the efficacy of educational programs and the Access for Success committee, working to implement best practices for learning campus-wide. After graduating from The Culinary in 1983, Keller embarked on her trailblazing culinary career, often being the only female employee. Undaunted, she focused on becoming the best at her craft and leading by example. Keller credits her success to her supportive parents, her Girl Scout leaders growing up, and to her husband and business partner. In 2009, when Keller joined the CIA as faculty, there were still few female chef instructors and even fewer females in the administration. In order to develop a sustainable culture of diversity in leadership, Keller believes it is important all students are exposed to strong positive examples. Through her role as Chair of the Women in Leadership association at The Culinary, she works to coordinate educational programing to develop leadership skills and empowerment of women. Throughout her 20-year tenure as owner of Restaurant du Village in Connecticut, Keller was very active in the local community and supporting charitable and nonprofit organizations benefiting the arts and education sectors, need-based community

pass. This was frustrating because he knew the material. His teachers and case manager encouraged him to continue and stay focused. When Hayes took the TASC a second time, he passed all but math and science. He didn’t tell anyone about his progress at first, but when our staff heard he had only two subjects to test in, we were so excited for him. This past spring, Hayes studied hard, got a good night’s sleep and retested in math and science and passed! For some, passing would be enough, but Hayes has plans and dreams. Getting his HSE is just the start.

ince July 1st youth have been participating in the Summer Youth Employment Program. Through this program, 17 young people from the Youth One Stop, YES Program, and the Career Action Center at Poughkeepsie High School were able to work at various locations throughout the county. The experiences varied for each student

and ranged from eldercare at The Pines of Poughkeepsie, to retail at Vassar College Store, and many more. By working at real jobs, participants were able to earn money while learning valuable skills for the workplace. “Our participants are able to learn workplace skills and etiquette in real time. They make important connections and begin to network in their own community,” said Summer Youth Employment Program Specialist, Jacki McLoughlin.

From this opportunity, many participants were offered permanent employment with the businesses they were placed with. The Summer Youth Employment Program is made possible thanks to a partnership with the Dutchess County Workforce Investment Board and the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce.

he Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce Career Action Center Program gave me the opportunity to intern in two different fields that inspired my future career path. My first internship with Senator Sue Serino’s 2014 campaign opened doors to a political field that I was excited to learn about and showed me the

dedication necessary to run a successful campaign. My second internship with the Law Offices of Gilbert West gave me valuable experience working on real legal cases. Through this internship, I realized I want to become a lawyer. The center shaped an important part of my future. Senior year had not been going well; in fact, his general school experience had been an uphill battle. Youth One Stop, in collaboration with Dutchess Community College, hosts a High School Equivalency (HSE) class that Hayes enrolled in. For the first month he was in class on time and giving it a true effort. He kept thinking of the day when he would hold that HSE certificate in his hands.

But these things take time and it’s easy to become discouraged and distracted. Hayes’ attendance dropped in favor of getting a job. After his case manager reminded him to keep coming to class, Hayes renewed his enthusiasm. “I’m doHayes ing this!” He said. Hayes signed up for the TASC test, a two-day ordeal, and worked hard toward his goal. His first try, Hayes did not

Pressure is on data centers worldwide to become the brokers of business value. Hundreds of other vendors work to supply solutions to specific business problems, but these solutions usually fall on the system administrator having to add yet another application into what was already a disparate process. This OneView will help to reduce overall
