HERITAGE Phillips Academy, in Andover, Massachusetts, is the oldest boarding school in the country, founded in 1778. Whether approaching from the North or South, the first glimpse of the school is always of the historic bell tower, which sits at the south end of the Main Lawn. Traditional brick buildings surround outdoor green spaces creating a formal progression of quads that define the Academic Campus. REIMAGINING AN ATHLETIC CAMPUS Located south of the Academic Campus, the Athletic Campus follows a less formal layout. As the first phase of an Athletic Master Plan developed by the design team in 2015, the Snyder Center redefines the center of gravity of the Athletic Campus and re-orients the circulation pattern along a strengthened North-South axis connecting back to the Academic Campus, thus creating a more open and inclusive “front door” for the Athletic Campus.

EXERCISE FOR ALL The Snyder Center includes a 200-meter competition track, a 12-court squash center with an exhibition court, and recreation space. The facility will allow all athletic teams to practice indoors during inclement weather and provides a much-needed large multipurpose space that accommodates a variety of events such as track meets, intramural and recreational uses, and special campus and community functions.

ATHLETIC CENTER AS STUDENT CENTER Conceived as a gathering space for all students, the building is organized around a light filled central stair running north-south between the indoor track and the squash center, connecting the lower and upper lobbies. Transparency throughout the building allows visual connection to both interior program spaces and the exterior landscape, blurring the boundary between inside and outside. Break out spaces along the central circulation spine allow students to meet and study before or after practice, creating a vibrant place for the entire school community.

HONEST MATERIALS - THOUGHTFUL DETAILING Taking inspiration from the surrounding site, the building design elevates a simple palette of materials – concrete block, metal panels, and beech wood. Various corbelling techniques coupled with split face and ground face finishes of the concrete block emphasize the horizontality and weight of the base of the building. Corrugated metal panels are layered with flat metal panels and vertical fins in a rigorous module to give depth and texture to the upper volume. Salvaged beech wood benches bring warmth to break-out spaces throughout the facility, highlighting the character of the wood and the history of the site.
