Refresh Your Home for a Brighter

Spring As temperatures rise and flowers start to bloom, it’s time to wipe away the colder months and refresh your home. Spring and summer are all about airing out your space and spending more time outside, which calls for cleaning and perking up your routine.

While a big clean and seasonal overhaul can sound daunting, here are five simple steps to help make your preparations for warm weather a breeze. Add a Pop of Color

Declutter to De-stress

Say goodbye to winter grays and blues and invite color back into your home with affordable and small swaps to celebrate the colors and hues of the season. Replace white table napkins or plain placemats with patterned prints or shades of magenta, red and orange for a pop of color, or snip a few buds from the garden and place in different sized vases and jars to decorate the table spaces and windowsills around your home. Incorporating pastels, yellows and greens also helps reflect the sunny, blooming outdoors.

While disinfecting and removing odors are the cornerstone of spring cleaning, it’s also important to re-evaluate items that were hoarded over the winter months. For example, revisit your warm weather wardrobe and pick at least three items to get rid of or donate to a clothing drive for every new item that you plan to bring in. Start by eliminating what doesn’t fit or what’s no longer needed. Cleaning out your wardrobe is an easy way to declutter your space.

Clean Out the Fridge

After you refresh your space, revisit your calendar to update with spring and summer sports, holidays and events. Warmer weather and sunnier days mean a fuller social schedule, and keeping your calendar organized is just as important as keeping your home organized. Hanging a whiteboard calendar in a central location is an efficient way for the whole family to make real-time updates. Add flower magnets or use pink and green dry erase markers for a seasonal touch.

Before tackling messes around the house, start at the heart of the kitchen by cleaning out your refrigerator. Get rid of old leftovers, forgotten frozen meals and expired condiments. By removing perished and never-used contents from your fridge, you’ll get rid of lurking odors and have plenty of room for all the fresh produce that spring and summer have to offer.

Soften and Eliminate Odors from Fabrics Throughout the cooler seasons, warm weather clothing like t-shits and shorts that have been stored away can take on musky odors and become stiff and wrinkled after being folded for so long. Preparing your wardrobe is an essential step to ease into the seasonal transition.

Creative Living 62 Digestsize.indd 7

Update Your Calendar

Make the most of your spring cleaning with these tips to start enjoying a more fresh, colorful and organized home.

TIPS FOR A HASSLE-FREE MOVING DAY

Moving vans are criss-crossing the nation in great numbers these days, as consumers take advantage of historically low mortgage rates to upgrade their living space and grab their piece of the American Dream. The New York Times reported recently that moving companies are so busy, they are turning people away, and in most areas of the country, movers need to be booked way in advance of your moving day. But the big day will arrive sooner than you think and you’ll want it to go as smoothly as possible. Moving professionals offer five tips for ensuring that it does:

3

List last-minute chores. You’ve spent weeks sorting, packing and preparing for your move, but certain tasks cannot be accomplished in advance, like emptying and/or cleaning out the fridge and freezer, getting kids or pets to scheduled sitters, or taking out the last of the trash. Making a list will make it easier for you to check off lastminute needs.

4

1

2

Prepare a go-bag. Pack a box or suitcase with stuff you’ll need on moving day or the day after, as well as documents and valuables you don’t want to load onto the moving truck, such as phone chargers, toiletries, medications and an extra set of clothes for each family member. For a long journey, you may also want to fill a small cooler with water and healthy snacks or pre-made sandwiches.

Creative Living 72 Digestsize.indd 5

Leave out basic cleaning supplies. You’ve likely done a thorough house cleaning by now, but once the furniture and packed cartons are gone, you may see dirty areas you didn’t notice earlier. Keep rags or paper towels and a few basic cleansers handy for tackling dust bunnies behind the now-gone sofa, or grime where the fridge once stood.

Do one last walk-through. Anything left behind may be difficult to retrieve later, so open all kitchen and bathroom drawers and cabinets, bedroom closets, coat closets and any other built-in areas where items may have escaped notice.

5

Have some cash on hand. While a credit card can cover unexpected stops for lunch or other purchases, you may want to have cash to tip your professional movers. Such tips are not mandatory, but if they’ve done a good job, consider tipping $20 per helper.

FINDING A HOME WHERE THE WHOLE FAMILY CAN THRIVE For many luxury buyers, the perfect home is often one where your family can maintain a sense of balance. It’s a place that’s designed for work, play and living a healthy lifestyle all under one roof. Ideally, this will provide a stress-free environment that promotes both physical and mental well-being. If this sounds like what you’re looking for, here are several features to keep in mind when searching for your next home.

DESIGNATED WORK SPACES An office or study is important for parents who work from home because it allows them to escape distractions and plugin for the day. It’s also necessary, however, for the little ones to have their own workspace where they can study and get their schoolwork done. Unfortunately, a high-traffic area, like the kitchen table, can be a difficult spot for kids to stay focused each day. ABILITY TO EXERCISE Whether it’s a fully-equipped home gym or access to nearby walking trails, everyone feels better when they’re able to incorporate some exercise into their daily routine. Being active isn’t just about staying fit, but also reducing stress and sleeping better at night. This is especially important for children because it instills healthy habits in them at an early age. ACTIVITY SPACES We all likely spend too much time staring at screens, even though we know it’s not great for us. It’s easier to be more productive with your free time when your home caters to different activities. Setting up a space for your hobbies, like a music room or a painting studio, for example, can help to offer relaxation at the end of each day. A recreation room with games for the whole family is another fun way to put your phones down and reconnect once everyone’s finished their work. OUTDOOR AREAS Everyone feels better when they can get outside for fresh air. For the kids, that usually means having a backyard where they can run around and play. Parents, of course, might be more interested in a well-designed seating area with a view where they can relax, grill or entertain friends and family. The right space will depend on your specific needs, but there’s no denying the importance of having ample outdoor space to enjoy nature. Reprinted with permission from RISMedia. ©2021. SMART HOMES CAN HELP PREVENT BREAK-INS By Kellen Owings

10 PAINT TOUCH-UPS FOR A SHOW-READY HOME When you’re away or on vacation, the last thing you want to worry about is the security of your home. In addition to a home security system, smart home technology can help deter burglars and protect your property so you can relax with a peace of mind.

Four ways smart home technology can help are: Randomizing lights A smart burglar can quickly notice when lights are turning on at the same time in the same rooms every night. While smart to put your lights on a timer, a static schedule isn’t enough. Smart lights, however, can be set on a much more random schedule that varies from day to day and room to room, making it look like someone is actually home. Motion-activated lights Don’t just install motion sensing lights at the front door; place them near the garage, back entrances and the backyard to thwart burglars coming from any direction. Some models come equipped with a camera, two way audio and a siren should you need to sound the alarm. Video doorbell Smart doorbells like the Ring will let you know when any activity is occurring at

Creative Living 50 Digest.indd 5

your front door. Two way audio allows you to talk to whoever might be knocking, so if it’s someone who is supposed to be there, you can unlock the door and let them in. If it’s a stranger, you can tell them to leave. Turn on music or the TV You can set times for your TV to turn on or your speakers to stream music via a smart device. A device called the Harmony Hub allows you to set a TV to come on at different times each day and play TV. The sound of music or TV may be enough to scare a burglar off. By pairing the latest smart technology with a home security system, your home will be well prepared and protected while you’re away. Contact your local home security company to discover all of the options you have for security, including smart features.

SURPRISING COLORS YOU WOULDN’T THINK TO PUT IN YOUR KITCHEN When it comes to redecorating the kitchen, it’s not surprising that we tend to play it safe. After all, the kitchen is usually the most-used room in the house. Since a full-on kitchen remodel is costly, it often makes sense to opt for a classic color scheme that you won’t tire of too quickly or that won’t become dated when the next trend emerges. That said, the kitchen is also a great place to let your creative juices flow, and a new paint job will dramatically change the look of your kitchen without breaking the bank. And, if and when you’re ready to move on, repainting is easy. So if you want to be a little bold, think about choosing one of these not-so-neutral color schemes to give your kitchen a brand new, stylish look: MATTE BLACK. If your kitchen has a lot of neutral wood accents, lightcolored tile or large windows that let in a lot of natural light, you can add a sleek, dramatic touch with a matte black paint for walls and/or cabinets. This shade of black works well with modern farmhouse and contemporary designs.

TEAL. For a fun and slightly retro look, consider teal for your cabinets or backsplash. This soothing shade of green/blue goes particularly well with white countertops and appliances. You can add more whimsy with brightly colored small appliances, like a yellow toaster or pink mixer. ORANGE. Nothing beats the warmth of a healthy dose of orange in your kitchen. Whether you opt for a soft creamsicle or a deep tangerine shade, an orange wall or backsplash goes great with white or natural wood cabinets. You can add more pizzazz with navy or cobalt accessories and glass. PINK. Not just for little girls’ rooms, pink is a pleasing, fresh color for kitchens, too. You can experiment by painting just your kitchen island pink—a great counterpart to white or wooden cabinetry—and carrying the theme through with pink curtains and kitchen linens.

To get even more creative, mix and match colors in your kitchen, painting lower cabinets one color and upper cabinets another. Or paint a wooden floor in a colorful geometric pattern. You can also add an unexpected pop of color with a retro fridge or stove in bright blue or red. Explore online for more great kitchen color options! Reprinted with permission from RISMedia. ©2021. REMODELING ON THE RISE IN 2021

The strength of the current housing market—combined with continued working and schooling from home for many—is sparking an increase in home improvements and repairs. Whether you’re planning to sell your home or adapting it to better suit your family’s needs and tastes, the time is ripe for remodeling.

Creative Living 72 Digestsize.indd 1

2/23/21 11:37 AM

G

According to a recent report, the “Leading Indicator of Remodeling Activity” (LIRA), released by the Remodeling Futures Program at the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Har vard University, annual gains in spending for improvements and repairs to owneroccupied homes are expected to increase slightly this year, from 3.5 percent at the close of 2020 to 3.8 percent by year-end 2021.

1

The LIRA provides a short-term outlook of national home improvement and repair spending to owneroccupied homes. As Chris Herbert, managing director of the Joint Center for Housing Studies says, “The remodeling market continues to benefit from a strong housing market. In addition to routine replacement and repair projects, homeowners are likely to pursue more and larger discretionar y home improvements this year as the broader economy recovers.” The most popular improvements on the docket this year for homeowners include projects that make life more efficient and enjoyable, such as: UPDATING THE KITCHEN. While a full kitchen remodel may not be within your budget, you can still modernize your kitchen by replacing the floors or backsplash. Painting kitchen cabinets is an inexpensive way to give your kitchen a design refresh, or invest in a new appliance or two to instantly improve functionality and add value. ADDING A DECK OR PATIO. More attention is being given to outdoor living space than ever before. Extend your family’s living area by installing decking or creating a spacious patio. Outfit your new outdoor space with comfortable patio furniture, a fire pit, water feature, kitchen set-up and more. CREATING AN EXERCISE SPACE. Many have taken their exercise routines out of the gym and into the home, so car ving out a functional, designated space to work out is a popular home-improvement trend this year. Whether it’s a corner of the basement or unused space in your garage, designing an area specifically for fitness is an on-point trend. Reprinted with permission from RISMedia. ©2021.
