GET SOFTER LIGHTS. Shorter days and colder weather mean we’ll be spending a lot more time indoors. Switch to light bulbs that have softer light that is easier on the eyes. Poor quality or bright light can cause unneeded eye strain. Use this time to make the switch to LED bulbs if you haven’t already – they last longer and are cheaper than ever. REFRESH. Give rooms a facelift by switching out the old carpeting or area rugs. Opt for a hypoallergenic option to help you enjoy the comfort of the carpet, while not worrying about its allergens, microbes and odors. Give your bedroom linens a refresh as well, by making the switch to warmer flannel sheets and blankets that will keep you warm and cozy in the night. SAFETY FIRST. October is Fire Prevention Month, and it is the perfect time to take stock of your home’s fire safety by testing alarms to ensure that the devices and batteries are functioning properly. Replace any alarms that are outdated and install new alarms in your home. One should be located on every level and in every bedroom of the home. Fire deaths are often caused by dead or missing batteries or no alarms at all – so keep your family safe. And if you don’t have any, it is now the time to install carbon monoxide detectors as well.

Speaking of cozy – keep that way during the long, cold months ahead with a basket in the living room and den filled with comfy throws and blankets. You’ll want to reach for one on those colder nights when all you want to do is curl up with a book or a movie.

Helping in the Fight October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and throughout the month, companies, organizations, and charities around the world help in the fight to end breast cancer. This international health awareness campaign has amplified the amount of attention and coverage surrounding the disease in order to increase both awareness and funding for research. The goal is to join together to support women touched by breast cancer, whether they are currently fighting the disease, survivors, family members, or anyone else supporting the cause.

For many years, the American Cancer Society has made it a priority to encourage women to get mammograms, which is still recognized as the most effective tactic for detecting breast cancer early on. National Breast Cancer Awareness Month was founded in 1985, and the baby pink ribbon was chosen as the symbol that everyone has come to recognize and love. The pink ribbon movement has spread to everything from professional athletes’ uniforms to famous landmarks twinkling in pink lights during the month of October. This worldwide movement has come to represent a sense of community and togetherness for women all over who may be fighting the battle against the disease. The Real Estate Book is doing its part as well, by supporting the cause and donating to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. House Cleaning Tips to Steal From the Pros When it comes to spring cleaning, or housekeeping any time of the year, nobody knows how to make it more efficient than professional home and hotel cleaners. Try these tips from the pros in your own home.

Stock up on gloves and microfiber cloths. Rubber gloves can help you through a variety of messy tasks without soaking your hands in water or chemicals. Microfiber cloths can be used wet for kitchen and bath cleaning, or dry for thorough dusting. Simplify your cleaning products. You should not need more than three or four products, including a mix of vinegar and water in a spray bottle, to tackle every cleaning job in every room of your house. Keep cleaning tools handy. Having products and rags in a moveable carry-case, and brooms and a vacuum in a central spot, saves time and energy. In a two-story home, keep a second vacuum upstairs for quick and easy pick-ups. Clean the kitchen every day that you cook. Not the whole kitchen, but the range, the counters to the side of it, the refrigerator handle and the sink. New kitchen dirt is easy to clean, but old kitchen dirt can harden into rock.

Don’t get bogged down with clutter. Spend some time once or twice a month sorting and putting clutter where it belongs. In between, just pick up those light piles of mail and magazines and clean under and around them. Keep your pets brushed. It will minimize the time you spend dusting and vacuuming. Have a cleaning path. Whether it’s back of the house to the front, or tougher rooms first, know the route you will take. In any case, clean from the top down, ceilings first, so floors that catch the dust and debris are the last to be swept and/ or vacuumed. Start with the worst challenge in a room. In the kitchen, it’s the range. In the bathroom, it’s the shower. In the dining room, it may be the chandelier. Once you complete the main challenge, the rest of the room is easy.

If you’re looking to add a bit more green to your design scheme, you’re not alone. House plants are a popular way to add fresh beauty, and clean up your air while you’re at it. However, keeping a house plant healthy is a responsibility, even if it’s a small one. Consider the following plants that are both beautiful and easy to manage.

ALOE. You really can’t go wrong with succulents, and these cool plants can also help ward off sunburn. Just strip off a leaf, open it up, and rub the ooey-gooey insides on your sun-kissed skin.

ORCHIDS. These sweet blooms are beautiful and low maintenance. Just keep a small misting bottle beside your plant and give it a gentle spray once a week.

PEACE LILY. These graceful plants don’t need a lot of light, so they’re perfect for perching in your living room.

SNAKE PLANT. Don’t let the slithery name fool you. Another succulent, this interesting upright plant can deal in bright or lowlight settings, and can survive with minimal amounts of water.

ENGLISH IVY. If you want a hanging plant, this vine is for you. Place this ivy on a shelf or mantel and let the vines hang down. You can let the plant run wild, or prune it back for a more manageable look.

WAYS TO BOOST CURB APPEAL BY EVETTE CHAMPION

Homeowners focus so much on the interior of their homes that they may often neglect the outside—or at the very least do the bare minimum like keeping the lawn mowed. However, if you’re thinking about selling your home or want to one-up the neighbors, here are a few ideas that’ll put other yards to shame:

Update Your Walkway. When folks come to your house, you want to roll out the proverbial red carpet. A beautifully done walkway can give off the impression that you’re welcoming guests to your house. If you have a plain concrete walkway, you could tear it up and install pavers, brick or slate. However, if you don’t want to do all of that, you could powerwash the walkway and stain it with a special concrete stain. Again, you can go as bold or as subtle as you’d like with the stain color, but be sure to choose a complimentary color!

Add or Update Lighting. Yes,

houses often have a generic porch light, but they don’t really add any pizzaz to the exterior of the home. Upgraded light fixtures add a bit of class and appeal to your home without a lot of fuss. Dark fixtures with clean lines on lighter houses just look a little more modern if that’s your desired aesthetic. If you want a farmhouse look, white or gray lantern fixtures are great options. Other than porch lights, you can add walkway lights or light posts to the front of your driveway too. With that said, flood lights that stay on aren’t necessarily great for curb appeal. We recommend motion sensor lights so that you’ll be alerted of anyone (or anything) coming onto your property, but the overall look of your home won’t be overshadowed by the bright lights.

Flowers like pansies and hostas are great for colder climates, but hibiscus or peonies do better during the summer or warmer climates. If you’re unsure about what flowers or plants to use, or need more information about gardening in general, the Farmer’s Almanac is an excellent source.

Use Color to Make Your House Pop. Naturally, flowers are a great

way to add some color to your house, but there are other ways you can add color! You can give your house a new coat of paint, which will freshen up the look of your house. Some popular exterior colors include shades of gray and blue, off white and light neutrals like taupe and brown. Another great way to add color is by having a bold door and/or shutters. Red doors are typical, but have you ever considered robins egg or even a bright color like orange, fuchsia or green? Just remember to choose a color that compliments the rest of the house, rather than clash! As with the interior of your home, you should strive to have lovely curb appeal! Of course, meticulous landscaping improves curb appeal, but it also helps make your house feel like home.
