Health Ministry With the pollen count in Chattanooga recently reaching 7,000 (>1500 considered very high) not many of us should be surprised that May is National Asthma & Allergy Awareness Month! Experts estimate that 35 million Americans suffer from allergies because of airborne pollen! Allergies reflect an overreaction of the immune system to substances that usually cause no reaction in most individuals. These substances can trigger sneezing, wheezing, coughing and itching. Allergies are not only bothersome, but many have been linked to serious chronic respiratory illnesses (such as sinusitis and asthma). Allergic reactions can be severe and even fatal but with proper management and patient education, allergic diseases can be controlled, and people with allergies can lead normal and productive lives. Some common allergic diseases are: Allergic rhinitis (hay fever or “seasonal,” or “nasal” allergies); Allergic asthma (asthma symptoms triggered by an allergic reaction); Food Allergy; Drug Allergy; Anaphylaxis (extreme response to a food or drug allergy); Latex Allergy; Insect Sting/Bite Allergy; Urticaria (hives, skin allergy); Atopic Dermatitis (eczema, skin allergy); Contact Dermatitis (skin allergy) and Allergic Conjunctivitis (eye allergy) These allergens can get into our body by being inhaled into the nose and the lungs; ingested by mouth; injected or absorbed through the skin. Allergy treatment can include three different strategies: avoidance of allergens, medication options and/or immunotherapy (allergy shots). The best way to prevent allergy symptoms and minimize your need for allergy medicine is to avoid your allergens as much as possible and to eliminate the source of allergens from your home and other environments. There are some simple things you can do to prevent allergies such as: dust to control mites; vacuum often; reduce pet dander and avoid mold spores; stay inside during peak pollen times, usually between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.; keep your car windows closed; stay indoors when humidity is high and on days with high wind, when dust and pollen are more likely to be in the air; wear a facemask if you are outside to limit the amount of pollen you inhale; shower after spending time outside to wash away pollen that collects on your skin and hair Visit the Parish Nurse link at myolph.com for current news and information.

The Pregnancy Help Center thanks you for all the prayers and financial support. Thank you for making the Baby Bottle Drive possible and for working so hard to make it so successful! Through your faithful efforts the OLPH Family has raised $1, 320.65. What a contribution and bottles are still coming in!. Please return all baby bottles to the church office. By returning the bottle you save us the expense of having to buy new ones. Thank you again for participating in this special fund raiser. “I give you a new commandment: love one another.” Jesus remind us of the command God gave to the Israelites through Moses to Love your neighbor as yourself. Next, Jesus tells us to Love your enemies . Do good to those who hate you. Psychologists recently discovered that we must love ourselves in order to be able to love others. That is how god created us. Sadly many of us don’t love ourselves enough to feel that we can be loved by others or by God. There is a risk that the only one that we love will be ourselves. Jesus takes love to a new dimension. Love one another as I have loved you unconditionally; without a pre-condition of recognition; without expectation of being loved in return. God mad us stewards of His love-for ourselves and for others. Are we ready to give an account of our stewardship to answer the question? “What have you done with My love?” Please join Ignatius House for an Easter day of Reflection directed by Fr. Edd Slaazar, SJ on May 12 from 9:30-3:00. take time to listen be filled with the joy of the Lord and be surrounded by the beauty of Spring at Ignatius House Jesuit Retreat Center in Atlanta.
