Health Ministry Lyme disease (LD) is a bacterial infection caused by a spirochete and is transmitted by the bite of an infective tick. These spirochetes are found in nature in the bodies of wild animals and are transmitted from one animal to another through the bite of an infective tick. The human body doesn’t maintain a natural immunity to the disease. Thus a person can be reinfected with subsequent tick bites. Transmitters of the bacteria in our area are the black-legged tick. These ticks can be in the woods by the seashore or even in your backyard. Ticks can bite year-round and can survive under a variety of conditions as long as adequate moisture is available. An infective tick with local infection must be attached to the host for a day or more before transmission of spirochete occurs. A systematically infected tick or improper tick removal may cause transmission of LD much sooner. Signs and symptoms of LD often starts with flu-like feelings of headache stiff neck fever muscle aches and fatigue. About 60% of light-skinned patients notice a unique enlarging rash, referred to as erythema migrans (EM), days to weeks after the bite. On dark-skinned people, this rash resembles a bruise. Early manifestations usually disappear and disseminated (other organ system involvement) infection may occur such as profound fatigue severe headache fever(s) severe muscle aches/pain along with the possibility of other organ involvement. No test can "rule-out" LD. Treatment varies and depends on how early a diagnosis is made and the organ system(s) involved. Oral antibiotics may be sufficient for early stages of non-disseminated infection. Long-standing or Disseminated LD responds best to one or several courses of oral or intravenous antibiotics. Ticks like to rest on low-lying brush and 'catch a ride' on a passing animal or person. The areas that hold a high risk of tick infestation are wooded areas, low-growing grassland, and the seashore. Exercise caution where you go. To reduce your chance of getting a tick-bite: avoid tick infested areas short-cuts through wooded tick-infested areas; stay in the center of paths; avoid sitting on the ground; conduct frequent tick-checks; wear light-colored clothing; wear a long-sleeved shirt and pants; tuck your shirt into your pants and pants into your socks; use EPA-approved tick repellents; conduct frequent tick-checks and remember to check your pets too! WHY CATHOLIC? PORQUE SER CATOLICO? Would you like to help women make positive decisions about their pregnancies? Catholic Charities Pregnancy Help Center is seeking new volunteers for our ministry to pregnant women. For more info call Christina Call 423-265-2122. “I saw no temple in the city for its temple is the Lord God almighty and the Lamb”. The Apostle John was banished to Patmos for refusing to give up his mission to bring Christ to all people. Patmos is a charming small island in the Aegean Sea between Greece and Turkey where John wrote the Book of Revelations a letter he addressed to the Seven Churches of Asia. Today they are on the western side of Turkey along the shores of the Dardanelles and the Aegean Sea. John employs sinister images and applies coded references to people and groups to convey the beauty of the Love of God and to challenge disciples of Jesus to stay firm in the faith. He taught that God was not confined to a building the temple in Jerusalem. Rather, Jesus the Lamb and all who believe in Him and imitate Him are temples. This challenged the beliefs and threatened the livelihood of the Jewish leaders. John also challenges us to believe in God as the source of all that we have all that we are and all that we ever will be. Are we good stewards of all that god has given to us. “Whoever loves me will keep my word…and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him…” Can people tell God is alive in your home and marriage/Holy orders? Let worldwide Marriage Encounter help your home be a more powerful domestic church. The next weekend is Aug 27-29 in Knox. Call John & Manuela Ptacek at 865-531-1719 for more information.
