Dear Denver Gay Men’s Chorus Family and Friends, Season’s Greetings to one and all! The Holidays are absolutely my favorite time of year! We hope many of you were able to see the DGMC usher in this magical season, either in person or via live broadcast, during last week’s 9News Light the Lights celebration at the Denver City and County Building. What a thrill it was to sing before Mayor Michael Hancock, city dignitaries, local television personalities and thousands of downtown spectators and media viewers statewide! And the excitement has just begun: during the month of December, be sure to tune in to Colorado Public Radio to hear the DGMC as one of the ensembles featured in CPR’s classical series, A Colorado Choral Christmas. We are ecstatic to be a part of such a highly regarded and competitive program and to share our message of peace and love this joyous season with thousands of listeners throughout Colorado and, really, around the world! 2016-2017 marked the Denver Gay Men’s Chorus 35th Anniversary Season of Building Community Through Music. It was a momentous year and I’d like to share some highlights with you: • •

• • • •

The Chorus sang for 5,229 patrons at subscription performances last year and averaged 110 singers at each of our three concert series. A record 2,293 audience members attended our 2016 Holiday concerts!
DGMC’s outreach efforts continued to flourish as chorus members sang for more than 12,300 listeners at wideranging events to support nonprofit organizations and community agencies that advocate for equality. These included appearances at After Orlando to benefit Orlando victims and the Human Rights Campaign; Flow for Aleppo to support healthcare for victims of the Syrian conflict; People’s Climate March at Civic Center Park; Orlando United sponsored by Denver PFLAG in observance of the one-year anniversary of the mass shooting at Pulse; the 26th Annual HRC Colorado Mile High Gala; and Walk for Life, the 30th Anniversary Colorado AIDS Walk.
In June, the DGMC celebrated its 35th Anniversary with The Big Gay Sing, which included an extensive multimedia exhibition of our chorus history and an onstage reunion with more than 50 alumni singers. We were honored to receive a proclamation from Governor John Hickenlooper designating June 15-17, 2017 as The Denver Gay Men’s Chorus 35th Anniversary Days.
DGMC members appeared in a new film, The Road to Edmond.
The DGMC Artistic Staff laid the foundation for an exciting outreach initiative with the Denver Public Schools in 2017-2018 to foster diversity, create safe learning environments and to support anti-bullying efforts in
schools.
Together with our RMAA sister chorus, The Denver Women’s Chorus,
DGMC singers performed at our sold-out 2017 Cabaret, Love for Sale.
We welcomed new RMAA corporate sponsors, DaVita, Vectra Bank and
Denver Health, as well as welcomed several new RMAA board members.

I am exceedingly proud of the vital work we are doing within the LGBTQ community while, at the same time, expanding our outreach in the Denver metropolitan area and to Colorado Front Range communities. Looking ahead, please be sure to join us on March 16-17, 2018 as we we return to the stunning Ellie Caulkins Opera House at the DCPA Complex for British Invasion, the second concert in our 2017-2018 subscription series. This concert will feature the greatest British pop artists to hit the shores of the Red White and Blue; including Shirley Bassey, Adele, Dusty Springfield, Spice Girls, Elton John, David Bowie, Eric Clapton and George Michael, along with bands such as The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Duran Duran. In addition, the DGMC will be collaborating with Mountain Aires, the select ensemble of the Denver Children’s Choir, as our featured young artists. We promise you a revolution you won’t want to miss! Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at dgmc.org or in the lobby during each of our Holiday concerts. What a great stocking stuffer for that special someone in your life! Now on with the show! The singers have been very busy since early September with more than 50 hours of rehearsal to prepare for our Holiday concerts. It is thrilling to feature festival brass for part of this year’s program as we continue to expand the DGMC’s artistic vision and strengthen our commitment to musical excellence. The varied musical selections you are about to hear will range from classical songs and pop selections to a newly commissioned work; all share traditional Holiday stories, some dreams of the season and even a few wishful fantasies. These are the things that make the season bright! Thank you for joining us as we kick off our 36th Holiday Season and for your unwavering support. We are thrilled to be singing for you! Now, sit back, relax, and take a musical sleigh ride through a winter wonderland. 4

The Denver Gay Men’s Chorus was established in 1982 with a passionate commitment to the lives and well-being of LGBTQ persons and steadfast dedication to fostering tolerance and acceptance among diverse communities in Colorado. Now entering its 36th season as the premier gay arts organization in our state, the DGMC has performed more than 200 concerts that have entertained, educated, inspired and empowered audiences of all ages. The ensemble has performed twice with the Colorado Symphony, sung at openings and closings of the state legislature, performed on university campuses in Colorado and Wyoming, and appeared with many well-known Broadway and pop music guest artists. The DGMC has premiered newly-commissioned choral works by 12 composers, including the Rocky Mountain regional premiere of Andrew Lippa’s critically acclaimed I Am Harvey Milk; Nathan Hall’s Mountains and Rivers; Alan Shorter’s Make The Earth Your Companion; and James Deignan’s What Do The Bells Say?. The chorus has appeared prominently in Colorado’s top-tier performances venues, including Boettcher Concert Hall, The Buell Theatre, Gates Hall, The Ellie Caulkins Opera House, Griffin Hall and Red Rocks Amphitheatre. In 2016, the DGMC made a groundbreaking appearance at the United States Air Force Academy Chapel, becoming one of the first openly gay choruses to sing at any of our nation’s military academies. This year, the chorus returned to the steps of the City and County Building in downtown Denver as featured entertainers for a live broadcast of Light the Lights to kickoff the 2017 Holiday Season. Beyond Colorado, the DGMC has traveled to 12 states, the District of Columbia and Canada, and has made joint appearances with several men’s choruses in major US cities. The DGMC’s history of advocating for safe and supportive communities for all citizens is reflected in collaborations with The Matthew Shepard Foundation, The LGBT Community Center of Colorado, The Colorado AIDS Project, One Colorado, The Boulder County AIDS Project, Out Boulder, The Colorado LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce and the national It Gets Better campaign. The chorus is excited to embark on its first-ever tour of schools in Spring, 2018, to promote diversity, foster self-acceptance among Colorado youth and support anti-bullying efforts in our schools.

Off Kilter! is a dynamic a cappella vocal troupe comprised of singers from the larger Denver Gay Men’s Chorus. The 16-member ensemble performs throughout the year at numerous small venues in the Denver metropolitan area and engages communities, supports causes and entertains audiences of all ages with a repertoire that ranges from classical to contemporary. Under the direction of Sam Eschliman, Off Kilter! recently was selected to participate in a master class with The King’s Singers, the world-renowned British men’s a cappella vocal ensemble. Off Kilter! is available to perform at private functions. For more information, contact us at info@rmarts.org or call us at 303-325-3959. 21
