Coppin State head coach Romonzo Beans knew that his first season as the Eagles mentor would be challenging. He was right, as the Eagles posted a 0-24 overall record and a 0-10 record in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. He is just as sure that his second year at the helm will yield positive results for a program looking for its first conference tournament bid since the 2006 season. “We knew going into last year that it was going to be difficult to win matches,” said Beans. “We focused more on individual goals than team goals. This year will be totally different because we believe we can compete for a spot in the MEAC Tournament.” If the Eagles are to compete for a spot in the postseason it will be largely based on the play of eight newcomers, but Beans does have four returnees that he will count on to provide leadership. Senior Kanishia Sheppard, junior Jade Dudley and sophomores Tyler Phillips and Salena Weekly are the lone holdovers from the 2008 season. Sheppard is the Eagles top returning offensive player after averaging 1.83 kills per game and ranking second on the team in hitting percentage. She also averaged 1.55 digs and 0.27 service aces per game. Dudley and Phillips will anchor the Coppin State defensive effort as Dudley led the team Kanishia Sheppard averaged 1.83 kills and 1.55 digs with a 1.97 digs per game in 2008 per game aver-

age, while Phillips added 1.52 digs per game. “It is very important for us to have Jade and Tyler on the floor because of the energy they bring to each play,” said Beans. Weekly tied for the team lead in blocks per game last season with an average of 0.56 and will anchor the middle of the floor for the Eagles. The rest of the Eagle roster will be filled by seven freshmen and a sophomore. “We are going to try a lot of different things early on to determine the best combination for us to put on the floor,” Beans said. The CSU coaching staff is excited about the additions of Christina Epps and Ashley Saunders. Both are dynamic athletes who will contribute both offensively and defensively. The setting position will be up for grabs this season with a pair of newcomers battling for the job. Freshmen Mercedes Maynard-Randall and Tricia Baczek each bring something different to the table for the Eagles. “We have seen Mercedes play for the last few years and we’ve seen her improvement each season. She has great hands and really has a knack for distributing the ball to the attacker in the most advantageous position. “Tricia has a lot of club experience and is a real quarterback on the floor. We feel that her attitude on the floor will really make a difference for our team,” Beans said of his two setters. The Eagles will feature a more varied offensive attack this season with the additions of Epps, Saunders, Stephanie Johnson, Yolanda Reid and Jazmin Jade Dudley led the Eagles averaging 1.97 digs per Brown. game last season “With the athletes we will put on the floor we will be able to run a much more diversified offense than last season,” Beans said. Freshman Ashley Talley will battle for playing time as a libero and her ability to pass the ball will aid the Eagle offense tremendously. The Eagles will open the season at Colgate (Aug. 28) followed by an appearance in the Niagara Tournament (Aug. 29-30). Coppin State will open the home portion of its schedule against Lafayette (Sept. 9) and its MEAC opener will be against Howard (Oct. 9) in the Coppin Center. Coppin State will serve as the host institution for the MEAC Tournament, which will be held in the Coppin Center. The eight-team tournament will be on Nov. 20-22.

Romonzo Beans Head Coach Second Season Delaware State ‘02 Romonzo Beans enters his second season as head coach of the Coppin State volleyball program, marking his first coaching position at the Division I level. Beans got his start in coaching in the fall of 1993 when he joined the staff at Delaware State University as an assistant coach with the Hornets within the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. After two years at Delaware State and two seasons out of coaching, Beans returned in the fall of 1997 to accept the head coaching position at Broadneck High School in Annapolis, Maryland. Over the last 10 years Beans has established Broadneck was one of the strongest volleyball programs in the state with an overall record of 158 wins and just 36 losses, including state titles in 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2007. Under Beans’ guidance the Bruins also won eight consecutive regional championships, a feat that has not been matched by any other active high school coach in Maryland. Following the 2000 season, Beans was named the All-Metro Coach of the Year by the Baltimore Sun. In 2007 the Sun once again recognized Beans this time as its All-Anne Arundel County Coach of the Year. He has coached numerous all-metro athletes, including the 2004 Maryland Gatorade Player of the Year, and current Coppin State junior, Kanishia Sheppard. In July of 2006 Beans was named the head coach at Anne Arundel Community College where, in just his second season, AACC finished as NJCAA Region XX Champions and the District G Runner-up. Also in 1997, Beans was named the club director and supervisor of the Chesapeake Volleyball Club in Arnold, Md. Beans was responsible for organizing and implementing volleyball programs at various community recreation centers and associated facilities, as well as supervising all of the club’s staff in the day-to-day operations. Beans obtained his Associates Degree in general studies and business management from Anne Arundel Community College in May of 1992. He also has a Bachelor’s of Science degree in airway science management from Delaware State, where he finished his studies in the spring of 2002. He is currently working towards a master’s degree in special education at Goucher College in Towson, Maryland. Beans, and his wife Beth, have one daughter, Stephanie, and two sons, Kameron and Jordyn. Stephanie currently attends Salisbury University and plays volleyball for the Seagulls.

Beth Beans Assistant Coach Second Season A veteran of over 14 years of volleyball coaching, both as a head coach and an assistant, Beth Beans enters her second season as an assistant coach at Coppin State. Beans, wife of head coach Romonzo Beans, was an assistant coach at Broadneck High School prior to coming to Coppin State. At Broadneck she helped guide one of the more dominant high school volleyball programs in the state of Maryland. Broadneck won state titles in 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2007 and won eight consecutive regional championships. During her tenure she also served as the head coach of the junior varsity program at Broadneck, and the Bruins went a remarkable seven consecutive seasons without losing a match. Additionally, she has served as head coach and assistant coach for the Chesapeake volleyball club team since 2000. Her volleyball coaching career began in 1993 when she served as the head coach of the Anne Arundel volleyball club team, a position she held for four years. She then moved on to Broadneck High School in 1999 and began working with the Chesapeake volleyball club team a year later. Since 2005, Beans has also served as an aquatic instructor at the Anne Arundel Parks and Recreation Center. Beans attended Broadneck High School and played on the Bruins volleyball team where she earned ďŹ rst team all-county honors during her junior and senior seasons. Beans, and her husband Romonzo, have one daughter, Stephanie, and two sons, Kameron and Jordyn.

Coppin State At A Glance • Type of Institution: A public, urban, liberal arts college, Coppin State University has the unique mission within the University System of Maryland of focusing primarily on the problems, needs and aspirations of the people of Baltimore’s central city and its immediate metropolitan area.
• History: Coppin State was founded in 1900 as a training program for African-American elementary school teachers. It was named the Fanny Jackson Coppin Normal School in 1926, in honor of an outstanding African-American educator. The college moved to its present site in 1952, and, as Coppin State College, the first Bachelor of Arts degree was conferred in 1967. In 1988, Coppin became part of what is now the University System of Maryland.
• Accreditation: Coppin State is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, the Maryland State Department of Education, the Maryland Board of Nurses, the National League for Nursing, the National Council on Social Work Education, and the Council on Rehabilitation Education accredit programs at the college that correspond to their areas of expertise.
