Ashley Preston Head Coach First Season Morgan State ‘08 Ashley Preston enters her first season as the head coach of the Coppin State volleyball program having been appointed to the position in July. “Ashley is one of the rising young stars in college volleyball, and we were fortunate to hire her,” said Ramsey. “Ashley was very successful in the classroom and on the court as a student-athlete, and I want her to bring those winning attributes to our program.”

Preston becomes the 10th head coach in Coppin State volleyball history and will look to make her mark in her second stint as a head coach. In 2011, she led Spelman College to a 9-16 record, which established a school record for wins in a season. She also served as an assistant coach at Loyola (Md.) and Morgan State.

“I’m so fortunate that Mr. Ramsey and Coppin State Athletics have afforded me the opportunity to coach in the same conference that I have played in,” said Preston. “I love the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and I believe I can make people think twice about Coppin State. I know the Baltimore area and I know I can do great things with the potential Coppin State has. I hope that I can show everyone my commitment, drive and motivation to have my student-athletes aspire to be academically sound, involved in the community and athletically competitive. I feel like I am coming home and it feels great. This is not just a job; this is my dream to coach at a Division 1 Historically Black College.” Preston ranks as one of the top players in Morgan State history. She was a three-time First Team All-MEAC selection from 2004-06 and is the Bears all-time leader in digs with 2,066. She also owns the top three marks in Morgan State history for digs in a season. During her tenure the Bears advanced to the MEAC Tournament championship match in 2006. Off the court Preston was equally impressive. A native of Las Vegas, Preston was a three-time recipient of the MEAC Commissioner’s All-Academic Award and garnered Arthur Ashe Scholar’s first team honors as a junior. Following her junior season Preston also earned the Elijah Rowe Award, which goes to the female student-athlete with the highest grade point average at Morgan State. Preston graduated in May of 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in telecommunications and was honored that summer as Morgan State’s representative for the MEAC Woman of the Year Award. Following her playing career at Morgan State she spent two years as an assistant coach at her alma mater before moving on to an assistant position at Loyola (Md.) where she spent one year.

Junel Jeffries Assistant Coach First Season Morgan State ‘05 Junel Jeffries enters her first season as an assistant coach on the Coppin State staff. As an assistant coach, Jeffries is involved in all phases of the program including the development of the setters and middle hitters. Her other duties include recruiting, practice, game preparation and administrative work. Jeffries comes to Coppin State after spending one year as the head coach at Cheney University in 2008. Prior to working at Cheney, Jeffries has had a detailed background in marketing, customer service and project management. Jeffries had an outstanding collegiate career at Morgan State University spending two years as the starting setter for the Bears where she received Mid-Eastern Athletic All-Conference honors in 2004 and ranks fourth all-time in career assists with 1,527. Jeffries graduated with her Bachelor of Science degree in business administration, and is currently finishing her masters of science, in International Marketing, Business Administration.
