Baltimore Inner Harbor

Maryland’s largest city is the busy port of Baltimore, an engaging metropolis with a revitalized urban waterfront, thriving cultural scene and eclectic neighborhoods that characterize its diverse residents. Nicknamed “Charm City,” Baltimore was founded in 1729 and incorporated in 1796 by Maryland’s founding family, the six Lords Baltimore. The city grew from a tiny village of 200 homes to a prosperous shipbuilding center and port. Baltimore’s port was the second most popular point of entry for immigrants after Ellis Island. By 1860 Baltimore was the third largest city in America and is now the 13th largest. Today, the city thrives around the original port and inner harbor area. Throughout the Inner Harbor, visitors will find relics of Baltimore’s fascinating maritime history intertwined with a number of contemporary attractions. These include the National Aquarium, Maryland Science Center, Port Discovery Children’s Museum, the updated Harborplace and The Gallery shopping centers. In June 2005 the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture opened it doors as the largest museum of its kind on the East Coast. The museum honors over 350 years of African American history in the state of Maryland.
