Letter From the President DEAR STUDENTS: Welcome to Colorado State University! I am so excited to begin the fall semester and I hope that you are, too. Your arrival on campus marks a significant transition in your life. We congratulate you on taking this important step on your educational journey. As you spend time on our campus, I hope you discover that Colorado State is a place where your character, commitment, and service all matter – a place where you will be challenged with new ideas and new perspectives, where you will discover within yourself the ideals you value and a passion for your chosen area of study. Your education is this University’s highest priority. The staff and faculty are here to assist you in making your mark at CSU and reaching your academic goals, whatever shape they may take. I encourage you to engage with them, seek their help if you need it, and stay in regular contact with your academic adviser. This semester will be different than any past semesters because of the COVID-19 pandemic. We all will be asked to adhere to public health precautions that will help prevent the spread of the virus. You can read more about CSU’s COVID-19 planning at covidrecovery.colostate.edu. We are proud to welcome you to our Ram family and look forward to the day when you successfully complete your education here and join the ranks of CSU alumni. Our real job is to prepare you for that next big adventure when you leave Colorado State University and start changing our world. So during the time you’re here, learn from your professors, from your peers and from the myriad experiences here that will prepare you for that day. Be a good neighbor to those living around you and carry yourself with the pride of knowing you are a CSU Ram.

Warmly, Joyce

Joyce McConnell President Colorado State University

Welcome to Ram Country Colorado State University is at the heart of Fort Collins. Planting our roots here in 1870, we have been a key part of the community ever since. CSU provides an experience for students that we hope will make you proud to be a CSU Ram. It all starts with Move-In Day!

MOVE-IN AND RAM WELCOME 2020 MOVE IN 2020 To support public health guidelines, including physical distancing, Move-In will look a little different this year. Move-In will take place over a 5-day period between Monday, Aug. 17 - Friday, Aug. 21 and arrivals will be limited to 15 residents per building. Specific time slots for each student and up to 2 guests or helpers will be arranged prior to your arrival on campus. If you are moving into a hall, you will receive an email from CSU Housing with directions for how to schedule your specific Move-In date and hour of arrival online at MyHousing.colostate.edu. Once on campus, check in will be easy. Since much of the process will have already been done online all that will be required is completing any remaining important paperwork and signing for and receiving keys. The Housing website has additional information on the fall 2020 move-in process and a list of what will be provided in each room and what you can and cannot bring to your rooms this fall. housing.colostate.edu/halls/move-in/ housing.colostate.edu/covid-19/

INFO

All new students are expected to attend Ram Welcome. Ram Welcome is an opportunity to build upon your orientation experience and begin your successful adjustment to Colorado State University by exploring academic programs, meeting faculty and staff, learning about the many services available to support your college experience, connecting with other new and current students, learning traditions and discovering what it means to be a CSU Ram! Fall 2020 Ram Welcome will primarily be virtual in order to follow physical distancing and public health guidelines. More information will be e-mailed to students in early August and on the Ram Welcome website. FAQ FOR MOVE-IN FALL 2020 ARE FAMILY MEMBERS OR HELPERS ABLE TO ASSIST ME MOVE IN? Guests/Move-In helpers are limited to 2 per resident and are asked to leave campus by the end of Move-In day. Overnight guests are not permitted in the residence halls. Move-In volunteers will not be available this year to provide move-in assistance as in past years. Residents may choose to bring a personal cart/dolly to help move in their belongings. Housing & Dining Services also has a limited number of carts available for check-out in the lobby and will provide disinfectant wipes to clean before and after use.

ARE MASKS REQUIRED DURING MOVE-IN? All students, guests, and staff are required to wear masks in public spaces on university grounds, including outdoors, at all times.

ARE THERE ITEMS I SHOULD NOT BRING? This year, large items and furniture such as couches, futons, entertainment systems, large chairs, etc., are prohibited in order to ensure an efficient move-in process and mitigate long lines and crowding. Smaller furniture such as folding chairs (that are easy to move in/out) are permitted.

CAN I HAVE MY BED LOFTED PRIOR TO ARRIVING? To limit staff entry into rooms this year and support physical distancing, we are eliminating the option of having lofted beds in rooms. All beds will be set to the medium height (which allows for 30” of storage underneath the bed). We also cannot permit students and families to loft beds on their own because it risks damage to the room and/or injury to students if not properly set up.

IS IT OK TO HAVE ITEMS SHIPPED AHEAD TO MY ROOM? Yes! Residents are encouraged to ship as many items as possible prior to Move-In. More information about shipping and 3rd party vendors will be shared in the coming weeks.

College Survival Guide 5 LIFEHACKS YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN STARTING COLLEGE The first year of college can be an adjustment. You’re on your own, away from your parents, friends you grew up with, and starting a whole new life. You want to find your place, enjoy your freedom, and just have fun. However, one thing many entering freshmen can lose sight of is that we are here to get a degree! Doing well in your college classes is important. The classes you take in college are getting you one step closer to your future career. It’s important to take it all in and do as well as you can. It can be tricky to balance it all, but here are some tips that might ease some of your stress. These are the 5 things to know before starting college:

Over the next 4 years Canvas will be your best friend or your worst enemy. If you utilize it correctly, it will be a helpful tool to keep track of upcoming assignments and monitor your progress. Being on top of your Canvas calendar and writing important dates in your planner will relieve your stress immensely. Also be sure to check the class syllabuses, which will usually have a schedule of when in-class assignments, projects, and exams are due. This way you will always know when things are due and won’t be scrambling at the last minute to get things done.

2

ATTEND CLASS, IF IT’S COVID SAFE

Believe it or not, this can be a hard concept for many college students to grasp. Without having your parents force you to get to school, it’s easy to decide to skip when you feel like it. Even if a class seems easy, just a lecture, no in-class assignments, it is likely that your professor will prove you wrong. There will come a day when your professor will have a surprise in-class assignment, pop quiz or mention important information about an exam, and you won’t be there to hear it. Just go to class, your grades and future self will thank you.

3

ASK FOR HELP WHEN YOU NEED IT

If you’re struggling with a course, get help! Go to your professor’s office hours. It can seem scary and a bit awkward, but they will most likely be happy to help. You can also check out options for tutoring or talk with other students in your class to set up study sessions. Not asking for help with concepts you can’t fully grasp will only hurt you in the long run.

4

GET INVOLVED

Getting involved in college is very important. It gives you experience to put on your resume and social connections. University involvement always looks good to future employers. While it can be hard to manage a lot of activities as an incoming freshman, it’s better to get immersed sooner rather than later.

5

8

DON’T FEEL PRESSURE TO DECLARE YOUR MAJOR RIGHT AWAY

Many first-year college students don’t know exactly what they want to do, and that is OK! Undeclared students at CSU receive academic advisors that will help them talk through their interest and discover what majors and potential career paths would be a good fit. There is also the option to take introductory courses within different majors to see first hand what appeals to you. If you’re unsure of which route to go, don’t declare a major on a whim. Give yourself the time to explore your interests. It’ll save you from the dilemma of having to change your major a year or two into your college career.

If I could go back to my first day at Colorado State and give myself one piece of advice, it would be this: Focus more on who you want to be than what you want to do.

I’m here to remind you that college is about much more than an academic experience. It’s a crucible of life—a time to focus on molding and developing yourself. This truth was echoed by our sixteenth president: “Success is going from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm.”

Rams, welcome to Colorado State University. Ben Amundson Student Body President 10

The Principles of Community

racebiasandequityinitiative.colostate.edu

The Principles of Community support the Colorado State University mission and vision of access, research, teaching, service and engagement. They help CSU express what our community stands for and guide our expectations as we build the next generation of Rams.

The Race, Bias, and Equity Initiative at Colorado State University was announced by President Joyce McConnell on Sept. 19, 2019. The initiative aims to implement actionable plans to address issues of race, bias, and equity at CSU and to empower all members of our campus community to learn, work, live and recreate in a safe and welcoming environment.

BIAS REPORTING AT CSU

Any act of hate or bias is counter to the university’s Principles of Community. The Bias Reporting System is an effort to understand and assess the current state of bias-related incidents at Colorado State University in order to better meet the needs of our diverse community. It serves to support individuals who report an incident and those who are named as a target. supportandsafety.colostate.edu/incidents-of-bias

For those whose experiences of marginalization and oppression add extra layers to your distress – you and all of your identities are welcome here. health.colostate.edu/about-counseling-services

THEME GROUPS

Theme therapy groups help students connect with others who share common experiences, identities and concerns. Register for a theme group online. health.colostate.edu/groups-and-workshops/#themegroups

INTEGRITY

We are accountable for our actions and will act ethically and honestly in all our interactions.

RESPECT

We honor the inherent dignity of all people within an environment where we are committed to freedom of expression, critical discourse, and the advancement of knowledge.

SERVICE

We are responsible, individually and collectively, to give of our time, talents, and resources to promote the well-being of each other and the development of our local, regional, and global communities.

SOCIAL JUSTICE

Ram History & Traditions THE “A” The “A” is found painted on the western hillside of Fort Collins. It’s there in honor of CSU’s original mascot: the Aggies.

CAM THE RAM CAM’s name stands for “Colorado Agricultural and Mechanical” College (the University’s former name).

THE FIGHT SONG Fight on you stalwart RAM Team On to the goal Tear the (Opponent’s) line asunder As down the field we thunder. Knights of the Green and Gold, Fight with all your might. Fight on you stalwart RAM team! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! GO RAMS!

ALMA MATER Hail to thee, our Alma Mater; Colorado State. Memories are everlasting of this place so great. May thy Green and Gold unite us, loyal ever be. Colorado State, our Alma Mater, Hail, all hail, to thee.

RAM RUCKUS Ram Ruckus is the University’s official spirit squad. The idea of Ram Ruckus is to create pride in everything students do at CSU. Founded in 2012, it was created by students, for students to engage in student life at CSU, specifically athletics.

CSU OVAL The Oval is the heart of the CSU campus. It was designed in 1909 as an aesthetically pleasing way to connect the main buildings on campus. Now, the Oval features historic buildings such as Johnson Hall, which was the original student center.

I LOVE CSU DAY! On April 18, CSU students celebrate the University by wearing all green (a “green out”). Games and events are held on the LSC Plaza and the governor of Colorado signa a proclamation declaring April 18 “I love CSU Day!” across Colorado. Alumni are also encouraged to wear green and gold on this day. 24

COVID-19 Recovery is a website providing the most comprehensive and up-to-date information on COVID-19 as it relates to the CSU community. Check the site often for information and resources that will help you plan for the upcoming academic year. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS WHAT WILL FALL SEMESTER LOOK LIKE?

We get it. Decisions are complicated right now and we want to help. Whether you’re second guessing your decision to attend CSU or you want to give CSU a second look, we’re here for you. Reach out to us and we will help you however we can, including changing the status of your enrollment decision.

WHAT IF MY INSTRUCTOR BECOMES ILL? All faculty and instructors will design their courses so that the courses can be taught online or through technology if the instructor becomes ill or is exposed and can or should not provide in-person instruction for a duration of time. In addition, all courses will be designed to be flexible and adaptive to changing public health guidelines and orders, including a return to virtual learning.

WHAT SHOULD I DO TO PREPARE FOR MY MOVE TO CAMPUS? Two weeks prior to arriving on a campus for residence hall movein students (and those helping them move in) should monitor for symptoms. Anyone who is experiencing symptoms should remain at home until they no longer experience symptoms for ten days. Anyone who knows that they have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID should also stay at home for 14 days to monitor for symptoms.

WHAT IF I CAN’T START CLASSES ON AUG. 24 BECAUSE IN SICK OR IN QUARANTINE? Students who are unable to attend classes in person due to stay-athome protocols will have the opportunity to start classes using online flexibility until they arrive on campus.

You@CSU

CSU will provide face-to-face instruction on campus this fall, beginning as scheduled on Aug. 24. Some classes will be online only, and we are working to provide remote learning for those who will need that mode due to health and other concerns. We will move to online classes following fall break, meaning the last two weeks of classes (Nov. 30-Dec. 11) and finals week (Dec. 14-18) will be delivered virtually. Residence halls will remain open during and after fall break for students who need to remain or return. Learn more about the status of Fall 2020 semester.

WHAT IF I HAVE CHANGED MY MIND ABOUT CSU?

You@CSU, your online 24/7 student success tool, has added 40+ COVID-19 related resources to help students adapt in a changing world. Topics include: ways to stay connected during physical distancing, adapting to change in an ever-changing world and how to support your mental health during these difficult times. lsc.colostate.edu/slice/slice-engagement

Healthy Behaviors There are many things Rams can do to practice healthy behaviors and prevent the spread of COVID-19: washing our hands, avoiding touching our faces, staying home if we’re feeling sick and social distancing. These are the things we have heard many times, and as a reminder, here is why it is so important.

PHYSICAL DISTANCING

CLEAN AND DISINFECT

Many people have the virus but do not have symptoms, so they do not know that they are ill. Keeping six feet away from other individuals reduces the spread of the virus. Six feet is about the length of the average sofa.

Cleaning and disinfecting will lower the risk of spreading the infection. Students who live in university housing will be responsible for cleaning their university housing rooms and bathrooms. The university will provide cleaning supply kits to students who do not have their own supplies.

WEAR A MASK Cloth face coverings are recommended as a simple barrier to help prevent respiratory droplets from traveling into the air and onto other people when the person wearing the cloth face covering coughs, sneezes, talks, or raises their voice.

HAND WASHING FOR 20 SECONDS Evidence suggests that washing hands for about 20 seconds removes more germs from hands than washing for shorter periods. Hand sanitizer isn’t as effective against coronavirus as washing with soap and water, but if soap and water are not available, use hand sanitizer.

Every Ram must also clean their personal space when arriving and leaving, including residence hall rooms, suite bathrooms, study cubicles or the library.

BE PREPARED Bring a care kit to campus for fall. The kit should include: • • • • • •

A thermometer to monitor for fever At least two reusable, washable cloth face masks Basic cold and flu medications Hand sanitizer or hand wipes All 30-days supplies of prescription medications Health insurance information
