Hydrophilicity 2: Experimenting Beyond Type.

Hydrophilicity [2] // Experimenting beyond type. Tutor: Daniela Konrad

The RMIT Master Design Studio Hydrophilicity [2] // experimenting beyond type strived to investigate local qualities of Melbourne’s Docklands and asked all participants to propose a sitespecific architectural intervention on the undeveloped site of the North Wharf pier. The Studio was based on an intensive research on the context of the Melbourne Docklands, analyzing their given characteristics, structures, behaviors, and atmospheres, as well as their ecological and economical rationales. Water and the water’s edge was always in the focus of our work, aiming at encountering new strategic ways for the appropriation of urban water territories. In several exercises the studio participants researched on the heterogeneities in situ, and opened up to the territorial, cultural, social, political and ecological forces of the site. All final architectural interventions were based on a hypothesis and design guidelines derived from the research results. The quality and potential of the North Wharf pier and water general is addressed differently in each proposal, however, everybody discovered that the surrounding can suggest a template for the built! History of the Docklands area Boon Wurrung and Woi Wurrung tribes’ areas 1802: Lady Nelson and The Investigator made the rst European entrance into Port Philipp Bay 1803/1804: The Surveyor General Charles Grimes discovered the Yarra River 1835: John Pascoe Fawkner and John Batman arrived in Port Philipp Bay. J. Batman settled down on the Batman’s hill, in the actual docklands until his death. 1937: The Governor Richard Bourke made ofcial the city of Melbourne and created the plan of the city. 1848: Melbourne became a city Abattoirs, boiling-down works, tanneries and other industries set up in the dockland area, creating a really polluted area. The Harbor was a basin a bit further up to the Yarra. 1851: Gold was discovered in Victoria, beginning of the gold rush. Victoria became a separate colony from the New South Wales. A gas station is constructed near Batman’s hill to light the city. Project A cleaning system, the Yarra Yean System, was installed 30km north up to the river. The need of a new bigger harbor became obvious 1877: The Melbourne harbor Trust was established: The Yarra would rst be rerouting, deepening and widening. The works started in 1879. 1888: The Australian Wharf is inaugurated. The rst ship to berth, in 1893 was the Lund Line’s SS Hubuck.2009 1890’s: Victoria’s economic crash. Project for the extension of the harbor are stopped 1901: Melbourne became the temporary capital of Australia: Rails • Economic upturn • Lots of cargos poured into the city 1929 • Wool was still the main export but also primary products from all over the state Water

RMIT School of Fine Arts Ashini Kulatunge & Michelle McMahon

The proposed site has no rules or intentions of usage and people are unsure on how to occupy the space. Thus, the North Wharf in the Docklands needs to be given a greater sense of ownership, without too specific rules. Our intentions are to blur and interweave movements and boundaries between activities, as well as, the threshold between water and land. Our proposal, the RMIT school of fine arts, occupies the whole North Wharf pier. Adjacent to the campus, The Melbourne Museum of Art is placed along the end of the pier as well as small retail and cafes to encourage a diverse group of people to visit the site. The school sprawls across the pier, linked through movement as well as the spatial needs of the students. The program evolved through the need to create a greater sense of culture and art in the Docklands and to encourage and attract more attention from the local community. 4

Architecture does not mean inventing but discovering, an ever new interpretation of known terms, seeing the world with different eyes, experiencing it anew, rediscovering it and enlivening it with new content. (Goethe)

The design process involved continuous operations by addition, subtraction, and alteration of a grid system to densify the site and create individual moments. The process was based on site analysis and research, social interaction and site conditions such as wind, sun, and atmospheric qualities which created a site specific proposal. The final architectural intervention is based in the notion of threshold and how architectural threshold can be used to create a notion of discovery within the site as well as a slow transition and reconnecting the inhabitants to the site through creating personal experiences. The project sets up a blended dialogue throughout the site between program, landscape and waterscape; and we seek to create a more diverse appeal, attracting more Melbournians, and more importantly, at a higher frequency and for a longer duration. 5

Culture, site and subtlety Chris Gilbert

The compilation of the conducted research in the area of the North Wharf pier and an awareness of the architectural and social conversation regarding the existing Docklands development has lead me to the following conclusions: 1. Any new development within the Docklands area should embody the qualities of Melbourne. Quality of space, intimacy, warmth, texture, intensity, and scale. // 2. Due to it being a central site with easy access to the CBD and major highways, it should be used to contribute to the goals of Melbourne 2030, as such the site should consist largely of high density residential dwellings. // 3. There should also be a wide range of commercial and recreational activities within the site. In order to become successful it needs to create its own community with a self generating/perpetuating level of intensity and activity. // 6

There should be opportunities for small business and artists to assist in generating creative culture. // 6. It should attempt to be critical of itself rather than an ideal or a utopia. // 7. It should understand the environmental conditions of the site and take full advantage of them. // 8. It should be concerned with quality of space and livability of public areas and streets. // 9. It should be a framework rather than a complete design solution were every building is designed. // 10. It should not seek to interpret the water/its location or seek an abstract connection with it. SMALL STUDIOS, COMMERCIAL & PUBLIC BUILDINGS

THE TYPOLOGY OF THE GROUND PLAN DIRECTLY INFORMS URBAN PLANNING. THIS ACTS AS A GENERATOR, AND INFORMS TYPOLOGY OF COURTYARDS AND PUBLIC SPACES, ADDING ANOTHER LEVEL TO THE INTERVENTION.

COMMERCIAL SPACES CONSIST OF A LARGE NUMBER OF SMALL STUDIOS SUBSIDIZED BY THE GOVERNMENT. THESE ARE AMIED AT SMALL YOUNG BUSINESS. THE INTENTION HERE IS THAT THIS GENERATES A VIBRANT YOUNG WORKING/ART CULTURE. THIS BRINGS WITH IT ENERGY AND ENTHUSIASM FOR THE AREA. IT TURNS FROM A SPACE WITH A NICE VIEW TO A PLACE OF ACTIVITY AND DIRVE.

b, AS TIDE RISES AIR IS PUSHED THROUGH BUILDING.

PLANTER BOX DETAIL. PLAN. A SUBTLE SHIFT IN PERSPECTIVE REMIND US WHERE WE ARE. URBANTO PLANNING JUSTIFICATION

BY PUSHING THE COMMERCIAL AND PUBLIC FACILITIES TO THE GENERATED DIAGRAM. BOUNDARIES FROM OF THE SITE,CIRCULATION THE FOCUS OF THE COMMUNITY BECOMES INTERNALISED. THIS IS TO ENSURE THE DEVELOPMENT IS NOT DRIVEN BY THE VIEW 'RATHER THE COMMUNAL CULTURE'.

Nationwide, the whole eastern coast line of Australia has become very dry. Therefore, we have developed a strong interest in water re-utilization. Learning from several precedents for ecological systems we have decided to use the Seawater Greenhouse and a landscape filtering system as our main parts of a new livable ecosystem. In order to implement these ideas into North Wharf pier, we have started a precise calculation on the amount of water being produced by a Seater Greenhouse on our site. We have learned that this greenhouse would produce more fresh water than it would utilize for the production of crops. Thus, we introduce residential units as part of our ecosystem. The master planning of the whole systems is determined by the rate of freshwater production and how many residences it can support. In the end, our whole proposal is a self-sustaining system in regards to water. 10

Greenhouse Residential

The Seawater Greenhouse produces crops, fresh water and cool air, which can be utilized for human consumption. The systems works with seawater taken from the harbour, which is then channeled to the greenhouse to cool down the building, and is then returned back to the sea. The fresh water that is distilled out from a condenser in the greenhouse, is then used for irrigation of the crops and placed at disposal for residential consumption. Any surplus water is stored in containers. The rainwater that falls on the site is filtered by the landscape and stored underneath the pier. The Seawater Greenhouse has operable windows, which allow the cool air produced by the greenhouse to be passed onto the residential block behind it in summer time. To conclude, Greenhouse+Park+Apartment is a new building typology which can significantly contribute to a sustainable future in Melbourne. 11
