Studio summary The afterglow project use the skills across architecture, textile design, and applied science in order to consider highly fluorescent materials. The afterglow fluorescent material which is charged by sun light and is able to glow for up to two days is explored as a form generator aiming to better incorporate bicycles in existing Melbourne transport nodes. Bike riding is becoming increasingly popular for many reasons, the desire to reduce carbon footprint, general dissatisfaction with public transport efficiency, and increased interest in fitness. Riding at night can be dangerous due to low visibility from cars, as well as being targets for street crime. The brief of this studio looks at better integrating bikes into the existing urban fabric. The scale of the studio ranges from the individual cyclist to how these work on an urban level. It also looks at bike, tram, bus and train stops, how they function individually, in a group and how they interface with other modes of transport. How can these stops have the potential to be considered more than just utilitarian nodes? Can they instead be developed as rest stops, moments in the routine of commuters that can enrich their experience of the city and suburbs alongside with increasing the confidence of people to use bicycles at day as well as night time?

Ideology, brief, site and solution The basic formal characteristics of our project are based on the simple mathematics of a PARABOLIC curve graph, where straight lines are used to create a perfect curve. The design aims to improve bike storage and bike circulation trough an urban site (coburg train station) and to embrace the use of “glow in the dark material�. The urban fabric of the site, the train station and the Upfield bike path pushed towards a minimal and rustic infrastructural solution- making the safety of riders the main concern. The graph lines allowed for enclosue, framing and division of the different programs, replanning the existing confusion of overlapping circulation. By placing bike riders on a 8 meter high bridge and re- designing the existing bike path for pedestrian use, the proposal separates bike riders and pedestrians trough the site. Afterglow
The Pit Stop Located on Queen Street at the verge of Queen Victoria Market, the scheme is proposed to accommodate bicycles, cyclists and market visitors with respective programs. The afterglow material on the scheme not only becomes a guide route for the cyclists to park their bicycles at night but also activates the site with possibility of hosting night markets that allow stalls to be set up after hours. Separating the circulations between the cyclist and the pedestrians on each site of the scheme, the two types of occupant will have the opportunity to socialize and mingle together in the programs where the space area is actually shared. Design Concept The site is located at the corner of Swanston Street and Victoria Street, utilizing the currently under used triangular site just south of the CUB block and bridges the busy Victora and Swanston Street intersection. The proposal connects and service the main campuses in Melbourne. The project mainly focus on two issues: traffic jam and bike storage. The idea of a bridge as an extension of the existing bike path along Swanston Street can effectively solve the traffic issue and at the same time make use of the space upon and under the bridge by utilizing it as for bike storage. The storage area on the triangle site is for bike lease, while the area close to the design hub is for bike storage for students who study in Design Hub. Xiaozhou Qin 7
Integrated walkway
Integrated walkway The site is a pedestrian lane way between Trobe Street and Little La Trobe Street. It is located close to major institutional and commercial building as well as public transportation stops. The proposal turns a pedestrian lane way into an integrated bicycle storage. So to not interfere with the existing activities and vegetation, the bicycle storage is provided on a higher level accessed by ramps on one side of the lane way. The form is governed by minimal interference of the ground level sun penetration and existing trees. To provide maximum lighting, minimum size structural members are used, and the secondary members, the translucent bars, bike stands and handrails are covered with afterglow material giving the site a low energy consuming night time use. Urban Bicycle Space The project is an urban space integrating in it two different aspects, the fast zone and the slow zone. The fast zone is a bicycle ‘service lane’ accommodating a cycle through café which serves cyclists on the move. The slow zone serves as a public space where pedestrians and cyclists can lounge amongst urban furniture, news stands and surrounding retail outlets. The design is conceptualized with the circulations in mind, manifesting itself as concrete infrastructure. From the harsh concrete infrastructure sprout softer timber structures, forming utilities and furniture for the cyclists as well as pedestrians. The design intent is a subtle insertion in a busy traffic island celebrating the circulation within and around it as well as revitalize the site. NurAsriah Abdul Tabil 9

City site- Swanston + Victoria Street intersection We were looking at creating a space which steamed off the existing circulation channels, redirecting traffic through the parking facility before once again entering the existing circulation fabric. This allowed us to create a streamline transition from road to infrastructure and kept a constant sense of movement passing through the building.

Park Site - Corner- Park Street / Royal Parade The design intent of the park site follows that of the metropolitan site. The planning is a solution to congested pedestrian/bicycling circulation and exists as a subtle barrier between the park and busy intersection. Like it’s sister site, it is a continuation of the transitional planning language, the cyclist circulation and parking was designed so that the form swells to hold program and bleeds back into the surrounding environment.

Bike sharing hub
Bike sharing hub The Hub serves the city as a public bike-sharing collective. It includes a bike parking terminal, an information center, a repair and accessory shop and a coffee bar. The Hub offers free access to a publicly-owned bicycle fleet. Cyclists have access to an automatic bicycle storage machine system and bikes are delivered and stored in the above ground airspace. The ground floor also functions as tram stop. A ramp hugs the complex and links the various internal functions. The afterglow material dresses the ramp marking the night time face of the building. The bicycle storage section can be seen from the street showing the delivery process. It also maximizes the visibility of the parked bikes and advertises the program. The program strives to transform the city area in to a haven for pedestrians and bicycle culture. Lei Bai 12
