Why the year 2041? Melbourne 2041 demonstrated what could the city of Melbourne possibly looks like if we used the data from the past, 2002-2018 and analyse them, combine with the data forcasted which mostly the next 20 years, which is the year 2041. The realtime data includes population, floor area for different functions within the hoddle grid, the number of skyscrapers and the possible height of them. ... etc. With the data gathered and visualised, the 3 key dominating programms, which would be office space, residential, and commercial spcae, by other assisting data such as vacancy rate within CBD, or the value of an apartment in CBD VS to the value of a piece of land, multiple rules has been made specifically for the year 2041. Now from the starting point...

The very interesting yet intriguing thing, we are using 2 or even 1 dimension to design 3 dimensional space, lanes works like a line, courtyards works as a point and connected by those lines, very typical in shopping center, or urban planning streets, current 3 dimensional process is using lines(roads) as a tool to form networks, the using the island which splitting by the roads and generate spiky building form, a city is formed, so to rethink urban planning we should rethink what is another way to form roads, in 3 dimensional way?

Mining the City With some thoughts starts from begining, the testing site which are Block 74 & 84 in the Melbourne CBD hoddle grid, the whole city block has been made as a massing model, with buildings and highrises being represented as cubes and volumes, the data then being specifically processed through the Excel document and 6 key programms has been extracted out, they are: education entertaining residential office common area commercial These programms then being demonstrated with specific colours, and with each single cell being put in different levels of randomnization, the overall mixture represents from order to chaotic.

CURRENT BUILDING HEIGHT:

Upon gathered highrises within the CBD, three types of highrises being displayed, which contains buildings under 50 meters, buildings under 100 meters and buildings above 100 meters, which draws the data later on , a more specific data of how the highrise will grow in future.

Different from any other products, house as a very special existing, contains many different component when its in different typology, the most significant typology will be tower/ apartment and house, one by selling stacking space, another by selling land. the calculation of value in these 2 typology is very difference, in one hand, house as the last part which hasnt been fully erode by consumerism stays out of the circle, unlike any other products house will still able to trade another similar size house after few decades even few centuries, but no other products could do the same. on another hand, apartment as a commercialised product, its no longer for people to live, it locked up all possibility to rennovate and moslty in melbourne apartment always used as renting property. the idea then focus on the relationship between value, tower typology and houses, and wrestle with these 3 cores, the idea of future architecture is no longer selling land, but selling 3dimensional space emerged.

The testing of Midsem proposal related a question of the system, which includes a core system, means every core works as a individual core, and units being work surrounds it, or layered system, which demonstrated in the drawings, the building works as a layer, with cells and corridor applied layer by layer, which solved the traffic complication.

what is permanent and what is temporary ? If it's permanent, how long could it stay? with a rapidly changing city, nothing is permanent, it's just a matter of time. So if a building was permanent to us in some sense, then crane is a temporary structure, if a city is becoming a temporary form, crane is then permanent.

Tower top Cells with no height restrain, hence the style is more gothic like, which followed the language of melbourne suburb architecture, the idea then combined the futuristic overall form but with almost old school style cells, the collision between neo and past.
