Introduction

Architecture schools should be concerned with experimentation that challenges the apparent self-evident certainties and accepted orthodoxies of the discipline (in its expanded definition), the underlying assumptions about what architecture is and can contain, and what it should do next.

Architecture schools need to ensure that their graduates have all the professional competencies that are required for professional practice and registration. But Architecture schools should also lead the struggle to challenge the default conventions of the discipline. The architecture school should strive to point towards possible futures not yet evident within existing understandings of the discipline and wider cultural/political terrains.

Architecture is about ideas. It is part of a wider cultural sphere and a way of thinking about the world in a broader sense. Knowledge and learning in architecture do not finish in the academy but require continued learning and a level of receptive agility from the architect, throughout the architect’s life. The rapidly changing economic and cultural conditions in the extended fields that architects engage with necessitate this, requiring, but also opening up possibilities for, new types of knowledge, fields of engagement and practices.

The Major Project Medals The Anne Butler Memorial Medal, endowed in honour of an outstanding emerging practitioner, is awarded to a Major Project that exemplifies the goals of Major Project.

The Peter Corrigan Medal celebrates the project that is most critical, political and culturally engaged. It is awarded to a student with a strong independent vision in honour of Professor Peter Corrigan who taught successive generations of architects at RMIT for over 40 years.

The architecture student’s graduating Major Project – a capstone for the formal design degree – should not merely demonstrate the competence and skill they acquired in the course. These are base expectations on entry into the graduating semester. The graduating project is an opportunity to speculate through the work and to develop ideas that will serve as catalysts for future, lifelong investigations.

The Antonia Bruns Medal, endowed to recall Antonia’s interest in the relation between film and architecture, is awarded to a Major Project that investigates the relationship between architectural representation, association and perception.

The project should lay bare considered attitudes, brave speculations and leaps of faith, pursuing these with rigour and depth. We would hope that the projects are ambitious, brave and contain propositions relevant to their time. We would hope that students experiment – in whatever form this might take – and engage with difficult questions, contributing not merely to areas that are well explored, but to what is yet to come. Experimentation though, in the graduating project, as well as in the design studio, comes with the risk of failure. But failure can be cathartic – it is an essential possibility tied to innovation.

The Leon van Schaik 25th Anniversary Peer Assessed Major Project Award celebrates Prof. Leon van Schaik’s arrival as Head of Architecture at RMIT 28 years ago. It is decided by all Major Project voting for what they view as the most adventurous and future-embracing project of the semester.

At RMIT Architecture we understand well the ethos and importance of experimentation and we have longstanding processes to reward it, importantly through our grading and moderation processes. In the RMIT architecture programs, we call this ‘venturous ideas-led design practice’.2 ‘To be ‘venturous’ is to be brave and take risks. What we hope is happening here is that students are learning to establish their own explorations which they can constantly reconsider and navigate through future conditions that may not resemble present understandings of practice. Competencies and experimentation can happily co-exist.

We aim to educate students to engage with architecture’s specific characteristics unapologetically, and to not be afraid of its complex, uncertain and liquid nature. We aim to prepare our graduates to engage in and contribute to a broader world of ideas and to eventually challenge our ability to judge with new, challenging and meaningful propositions.

model, originated over 25 years ago by van Schaik, who states ‘Design Practice Research at RMIT is a longstanding program of research into what venturous designers actually do when they design’ .

What is Major Project?

In Major Project, students are expected to formulate an architectural research question and develop an articulate and well-argued architectural position through the execution of a major architectural design project.

RMIT Architecture values ambitious, adventurous projects; those that demonstrate new and pertinent architectural ideas or show how established ideas can be developed or transformed to offer deeper understandings. The best major projects take risks and attempt to see architecture anew. Major Project should form the beginning of an exploration of architectural ideas that can set the agenda for the first ten years of original and insightful architectural practice.

The nature of the project is not set, and the scope of the brief and site is established by the student in consultation with their supervisor as the most appropriate and potentially fruitful vehicle for testing and developing their particular area of architectural investigation. Typically, major projects proceed in a similar way to design studios – with the difference being that students themselves set their brief and topic of investigation.

The research question and architectural project will often develop in parallel and it is expected that the precise question and focus of the project will be discovered and clarified through the act of designing. This process is iterative and develops through weekly sessions. Projects are also formally reviewed at two public mid semester reviews before the final presentation.

Major Projects have ranged from strategic urban and landscape interventions with metropolitan implications, through to detailed explorations of building form, materiality, structure and inhabitation; to detailed experimentation in the processes and procedures of architectural production. It is expected that Major Projects will develop a particular and specific area of interest that has grown during a student’s studies, rather than merely complete a generic and competent design. Often these specific interests will develop in relation to those of supervisors – we encourage students to work closely with their supervisors to build on mutual areas of expertise and interest.

It is understood that major projects will differ in scope, scale, kinds of representation produced and degree of resolution; with these factors depending on the nature of the architectural question and accompanying brief.

Emphasis should be placed on producing a coherent and complete project, where proposition, brief, scale, degree of resolution and representation work together to provide a balanced, convincing and focused expression of architectural thought.

There is no expectation that Major Project be ‘comprehensive’ in scope. Rather, the aim of the subject is to establish, through the completion of a major design work in a rigorous manner, a well-argued architectural experiment that has the potential and richness to engender future explorations and that will sustain the student for the next ten years of their architectural practice.

A high level of skill and a demonstrated knowledge of existing architectural ideas is an important component of a successful major project, however the goal should not be to demonstrate a professional level of accepted best practice. Rather it is an opportunity to demonstrate new kinds of knowledge and ideas through architectural form. _Excerpt from Major Project Briefing Notes 2017

Radicalising Gladstone Park

This project explores the possible transformation of a suburb in the context of the digital age, where the (actual, physical) social realm, and hence our ability to engage with the city and with one another, is ever-shrinking.

Gladstone Park, bordered by two freeways and a creek gully and disconnected from Melbourne’s major public transport systems, remains largely unchanged since its inception as a major tract housing development in the early 70s. Its urbanism epitomises the insularity and conservatism generally associated with the suburbs. Its major “civic” components are a shopping centre and a handful of dry, unactivated “reserves”. Its population is steadily decreasing. It is, however, near the airport.

With all public programs situated along a new (archetypal Australian) main street, in an accessible and nonhierarchical architecture that privileges the real and the everyday, Gladstone Park now invites participation, improvisation and the exchange of differences - essential to the idea of the city as a vital public sphere. ibr ry

This project reimagines Gladstone Park as an autonomous “town” that, at a time where a third of the world’s population are displaced, acts as an “arrival city” for an influx of refugee immigrants. This brief establishes a reciprocal relationship – Gladstone Park offers the potential of “home”, and its new arrivals offer the potential of evolution into a place of social and cultural vitality.

It contends with the metalogics of planning throughout its translation, and the inconsistencies, duplications, and conflicts between the documents are superimposed and materialised to depict the syntax that governs architecture.

The project is founded on the history of Defence and Quarantine at Point Nepean (also known as Mon Mon) and its detrimental consequences on the Australian landscape and First Australians. The heart of the project centres on a Research Institute focused on landscape regeneration through a continued understanding of indigenous agricultural practice. The Indigenous philosophy towards fire as a revered totem is an example of how First Australians amalgamated their cultural ideology with agriculture in the widespread implementation of controlled burns across the continent to redefine natural environments.

The proposition fuses the fire station, laboratory, glass house, and community hall into a singular typology with distinct spatial volumes. Referencing the existing bunkers at Fort Nepean, the ‘bunker’ is explored as an architectural and utilitarian precedent that is reclaimed from an infrastructure of war to an infrastructure of ecology. As such, the project is first understood as an artefact in the landscape, unapologetically distinct and legible from afar. This contrast behaves as a signal, reinforcing the project as a civic landmark in the park. The project acts as a bridge, spanning and inviting landscape and the public to permeate its boundaries and engage with the process of agriculture and research.

Matilda is a kit of concerns relieving the site of private indentations, speculating within a contingent order to facilitate the acts of densification while maintaining an open public realm. It is the hope to design a setting for architecture.

Governed by the better apartment standards, a new metric shifts away from that of of the orthodox metric of the vehicle. Treating the project as ‘area’, the shift from designing through zoning relieves architecture of its function within the framework, proclaiming an architectural longevity that is sympathetic to Enrico Taglietti’s ‘function follows form’.

Embracing the garden city (whose exemplar is the Australian Capital Territory) Matilda creates a balancingact of public realm (landscape) and infrastructure (architecture). Consolidated over two areas of vulnerable public open space, the infrastructural envelope responds to the existing landscape characteristics composed by new written specifications documented via careful selections of exemplar projects, acclimatised to Springvale.

Anne Butler Memorial Medal Semester 1, 2017 Supervisor Statement: This project is situated somewhere between the near future and the recent past, on a site not far from here. Nominally the corner of Elizabeth and Lonsdale street with connections to the recently Hayball Empire apartments and Elenberg Fraser’s Beyoncé tower, as well as to the ARM renovated Kurakawa Melbourne central. In many way, this project shares an interest with another Alumni and colleague, Felicity Scott, whose recent book Outlaw Territories: the subtitle of which is Environments of Insecurity/Architectures of Counter-Insurgency investigates architecture’s relation to “human unsettlement” and territorial insecurity is framed in terms of equipment and situation of ownership and agency.

BOARDING is a situation between the street and the international space station, NOW is the time where past futures and future past collide. The project revolves around a stream of inventions, each an extra things that Dan has brought into existence, each a set that sees a collision of bodies and objects used to rethink proximity, ownership and possession. Shared wardrobes occupy abandoned rooms, communal kitchens and bathrooms which require additional plumbing, storage furniture and appliances all pose solutions to yet unasked questions and unimagined problems in a world where everything is a thing _ Peter Brew

Now Boarding by Dan Schulz begins at the margins of the city where clever pretty people have retrofitted a State Bank House in order to collectivise their wardrobe. After successfully becoming the most fashionable citizens in the Northern suburbs, the newly liberated inhabitants decide to destabilise the pedigree city by introducing new domestic inventions, prosthetics and additions into the home for restructuring work, life and leisure. The cast buy a series of apartments in the Empire building by PDS Group on Elizabeth street and retrofit them to collectivise their bathing rituals. In the face of increasing instability of work, the 8 hour working monument is toppled, an event that marks the end of the Protestant work-life structure.

Work is returned to cultural production.

Following the super-stardom of these sharing entrepreneurs Melbourne is ranked most shareable city six times in a row. A new development, The Boarders Club (patent pending), hybridises the cornerstones of Melbourne city - the home, the workplace, and the shopping centre - openly recognising the current condition of over-abundance of commodities.

At times this project is so wrapped up its own cleverness that good ideas become lost in a fog of pseudoempowerment and fight-the-system pinko chatter. Having said that, novel ideas are always welcome. The central trigger of Schulz’s propositional burgeoning utopia is that once the world’s wealth is owned by 0.1 per cent, the remaining 99.9 per cent of citizens will finally realise they have been duped and disembark. This counter-colonist class will build their own communities based on mutual respect and sharing of skills, forging a bright future for the city.

In here, we swim, and our tiny naked bodies know the enormity of the machine which holds us - we know ourselves in its grasp. Leaning on the pool edge, our eyes level with the concrete, rough against skin, its perspective withdraws into the heat-haze.

It is a place made for the city, not for humans. We meet the Creek here, like a reunion between estranged sisters, perhaps nervous, amicable and embarrassed; now both of us are outcast from a world overhead and unconcerned.

The flood is terrifying. Fast, heavy, silent and lethal and most nonchalant, until it rages upon the objects in its path. To think; this is where we swim‌ The water drops and slowly clears; the reflected light of pool-tiles, and the revelation of forms beneath the water indicates the start of the clean-up, the beginning of getting back in.

The architect defines a locality within the distributed system. Its effects are immediate and at a distance, simultaneously. Through ostensible and ulterior motives, an architectural programme is allowed for and suggested, rather than directed. In this way, the architecture is an open question of a potential inhabitation — something we could have if we wanted it.

The southern wing of Parliament House is completed with a gallery for artefacts gifted to the state. On the perimeter, bars dispense inebriating substances and monetise the venture. This major project has been developed through observations of the suburb. It has attempted to distil a set of the generic conditions as operating mechanisms with which to manufacture form and space. The mechanisms consist of the house; the subdivision and the spatial excess that is the by-product of the planned suburb.

Once these are understood as the constituent parts of the superblock, they are able to redeployed as a kit of parts that intensify experience – a new kind of suburban paradise. Imagine a backyard that allows you to have a fruit orchard and a tennis court and a veggie patch and play bocce. The initial investigations of this project were generic - not concerned with any particular site, but the entire suburban condition as a site for exploration.

The second part of this project attempts to test the generic through deploying the kit of parts onto a real site - Calder Park in Melbourne’s outer west. The amenity spaces within the kit have been organised through the view – the site as seen from road and rail. The two opposing grids converge in a central void defined by a pylon easement. The aggregation of the superblocks across the 276 hectare site allows for suburban experiences at the scale of the landscape – traversing the new suburb by walking though forests, orchards past pools, BBQ’s, through collective front yards, and a constellation of private amenity made public.

1. An architectural syntax of temporary infrastructures which fill the site across a point grid, to serve as orientation points for users and programs. These structures don’t take form as a building per se, but as a kit of parts with which to construct a temporary idea of the city.

The discipline of architecture is defined by ideas that are passed on, copied and transformed to form an accepted history of cultural production. In a world of post-truth politics, fake news, alternative facts and virulent populist sensibilities, how firm is this immutable foundation upon which our understanding of architecture and its value rests? What might alternative architectural facts look like in a discipline that openly accepts and is built on a visual culture of copying? By extending the capability of algorithms that already know what we’ll buy next on Amazon, what’s cool on Pinterest and what political views on Facebook might swing our vote, this project speculates on how machine generated images of Palladian architecture might learn from our tastes and desires and gradually erode our memory of what architectural value they held in the first place.

Using the Preston Market redevelopment as a testing ground, the architecture of the project begins to take on qualities that resemble an uncannily Palladian order and yet on closer inspection reveal subtle differences, anomalies, artefacts and falsehoods. The building unfolds in a dialogue between architect and machine; the designer judging the degree to which anomalous conditions are allowed to distort and refigure conventional notions (or ‘truths’) of the grid, the envelope, circulation, fenestration and ornamentation across different scales of the masterplan and its buildings, rooms and details. In an experiment in appealing to pop sensibilities, the strange result of this dialogue is an architectural fake, containing qualities ‘cooler’ than the original Palladian villa from which it is derived.

This project explores the concept of developing an approach to suburban densification that is not based upon a process of consolidation. The approach developed in this project interrogates the notion that densification can be a catalyst for greater, rather than less, diversity.

The archetypal house is divided in such a way that the individual elements remain proportional to one another and therefore the result retains an essence of familiarity of the suburban home.

A dense and pressurised composition is created through an intentional, and in some cases confrontational, overlapping of enclosed private spaces, semi-private exterior spaces, and the public spaces of the open street.

The newly derived forms were reconfigured in such a way that it became so fractured and partitioned, that individual houses are no longer singular objects, but rather become an assemblage of objects, where boundaries and edges become unclear and territories undefined. The private and the public become blurred and porosity through the site is amplified. The house, a symbol of the private and individual, becomes collective again.

Ultimately, this project addresses the fundamental contradiction that these two opposing forces sets up – how do you densify and be porous?

The result is that each building/renovation/venture is attempting to have a clarity in its form and use that conflates a diverse range of objects that closely and distantly orbit a topic. These are stemming from an initial intervention of an elevated walkway and sound barrier which subverts the private nature of the backyard and become a catalytic intervention from which a quasi-civic strip of architecture develops in between these two rigid models.

The city’s development strategy and regulation has lead to an increasing number of buildings and spaces that are distinctly complete. The resultant public and private realms that therefore have a finite ability to be occupied or appropriated.

This proposal suggests that unfinished or dysfunctional spaces associated with infrastructure are key contributors to the character and identity of the city and seeks to establish and investigate their positive characteristics. It proposes an infrastructure of occupation to ensure these qualities are part of the city’s development.

“The making of walls is implicit in the formation of buildings, cities and societies. Examining built examples reveals the importance as well as the possibilities of walls. At the scale of a coat of paint, walls affect the individual, while at the scale of the city, walls may represent and direct an entire culture. The wall may be used as both an analytical and design tool to better accommodate individuals and institutions.” – Mark Oberholzer

This project investigates an urban strategy of post petrocity of China. The site was the location of a 50 years old refinery which is currently functioning in reduced capacity due to the crude oil reduction in City of Tianjin. Beyond Babylon presents a new look of Chinese urbanization - that the city is no longer builds upon white paper but existing memory. The preservation of entire factory is respectful of the past petroleum civilization.

Existing buildings are utilized, and float above the refining facilities following a transformation of its architecture.

Beijing’s traditional courtyards are picked as an urban pattern to fill in the site’s void. The entire city is built above the ground in order to liberate the ground due to the long term contamination. The grid of city invisible streets and verhiclar areas are replaced with paved green spaces. Beyond Babylon presents a post-petro city which is raised from the ashes of petroleum.

Particulate Resolutions

Particulate Resolutions is a conceptual non computational, digital study which attempts to deal with the systematic relationships of particulates between composition, effects and the resulting qualities.

It explored this idea through a series of compositional studies via an effect of; resolution, intensity, blur, coagulation, fadeout, layering, and silhouette as a base limit. These effects were either built into the process to predetermine outcomes through feedback loop analysis, or were emergent from the process.

It is these compositional studies which were shaped around the design of a new docklands open air town hall, which attempts to critique recreating a new rich civic narrative of architecture which re-establishes it as an entity which can become super ornate.

Particulate resolutions aligned itself with several studies and precedents including that of atmosphere and perception of “the sixth sense” and Tara Donavan’s sculptural work. One of the most compelling by-products of the conceptual study was the common pareidolic relationships which could be made between the form and the user. This could be viewed as either architectural object or non-architectural object, which wasn’t intended in the process.

This major project is an opportunity for me to prosecute a certain idea of the city; an idea which very few architects seem to want to engage in or even acknowledge. It seems to be mostly non architects who take the position: Henri Lefebvre, Jonathan Meades, Robin Evans, Walter Benjamin, Slavoj Žižek, Albert Pope. Among these thinkers, sociologists and philosophers is an idea that the actions and ambitions of architects, urbanists, planners and utopians has been to sanitise the city, to cure it, and in attempting to cure the city they have in fact destroyed it and removed from it the paradoxes and intricacies that made it interesting or worthwhile.

Robert Hughes summarises it in The Shock of the New when he quips that it would seem that “like plants, we need the shit of others for nutriments”. This notion has its root in the Hegelian idea of ethics as being corporeal, that bodily interaction is necessary for the development of ethics. It stands then that the more we retreat into our domestic and technological bubbles, the less ethical we may become. To quote Henri Lefebvre: “The left-wing critique must demonstrate that centrality is constitutive of urban life, that if there is no longer centrality, there is no longer urban life, that the dislocation of centrality threatens the very heart of urban practice”.

This design is a sleep clinic; An idea of a facility that comes out of the growing body of research on sleep and its relation to physical and mental health. It connects to the idea of a sanatorium- an old fashioned idea that sometimes what we need to recover and get well, is a good rest.

The building mixes recreation, accommodation, simple clinical spaces, and a small research facility. You could check in as a long term patient, visit like a wellness center, or come for education on the field of sleep.

The project is located in Kew near the Eastern Freeway, in an area of Melbourne with a long history of asylum facilities.

The focus on sleep implies a connection to dreams. This as an area of study is contrasted with the anesthetic tendency of medical treatment. The aesthetic suggests the rich and vivid world of dreams, as opposed to the bland and anesthetic world of modern medical treatment.

Building conservation has become essential to Melbourne’s revitalisation and the uniqueness of what the city’s economy has to offer. However, it is primarily an aesthetic history that precincts such as the Block Arcade and the Queen Victoria Market contribute to a place’s symbolic value, now vital for a city to act in a global economy. In reconsidering the criteria used by the Heritage Council of Victoria for assessing significance, this project assumes a practice in which the past becomes a propositional element in design. The project centres on the question of what the role of heritage might be in the design process in order to ensure an architecture’s more immediate legacy.

The site, a void, is utilised as a durational and psychological threshold prior to entering a series of secondary thresholds to the building proper.

The void sets the building as an ‘island’, a volume which must be crossed to reach the building. This first threshold reinforces the notion of ‘other’ with no apertures to the city, establishing the notion of a foreign object.

The extended, deepened threshold of the void links to the forecourt where the walls of the drum obscure context seeking to place the visitor within an experiential framework suited to a more focussed or heightened experience of contemporary art. The forecourt, within the building, yet outside, re-calibrates and allows a heightened sense of self, a dissonance, an adjustment to the relationship with the building and its surrounding context.

The pool is a culturally powerful public place. It represents a place we seek – beautiful, exciting, and inclusive. It is a unique and vital architectural typology within the context of urban Australia, regarded with great pride as an asset to the community.

NORTH SOUTH SECTION

The new urban communities we are creating are dense, fast and exclusive. Specifically, in Melbourne’s CBD, high rise development is rampant. Densification of Melbourne’s CBD could put our city’s liveability under extreme pressure if adequate measures are not taken to alleviate the inherent imbalance between community amenity, public space, and commercial development.

For high rise developments to exceed plot ratio there are regulations that dictate each individual development must provide a Public Benefit. This major project contests the current strategy of individual sites acting autonomously, and reconsiders an alternative of a collective contribution to a larger civic amenity.

Batman Park, located on the north bank of the Yarra River in the CBD’s west end, is offensively underutilised and offers little to the CBD in the way of quality public space.

Informed by a social concern, the public swimming pool was selected to illustrate how amenity could be provided in a relevant, familiar, and sensible way. This major project deconstructs the traditional idea of the suburban pool and the way that exclusive urban pools are integrated into high rise developments. It considers what the pool means for the CBD, how the pool can become the city, and the city can become the pool.

Chinese Social Center Box Hill Han Chen Supervisor: Dr. Jan van Schaik

Australian Chinese people’s acting history could be found from 18th Century. Along with the growing population of Chinese people, there is no architecture to reflect their history. This project tries to create a sense of belonging to reflect the long history of Chinese people acting in Australia and create a contemporary Chinese architecture language in Australia.

In the middle of the project is a contemporary vertical Chinatown, starting from ground level to top. Each function has its owns platform to present part of activities along the vertical Chinatown. From top to bottom the building is like a story of Chinese people acting in Australia.

The spatial and architectural elements reflect important historic events of Chinese people, such as gold rush, Buckland Riot and White Australia Policy. These elements are translated from traditional Chinese architecture. The continuous roof becomes a part of façade which imitates the Chinese villages. From ground to top, it intends to create a way back to home.

China is experiencing an air pollution bubble.This project proposes to incorporate a range of plants into a residential building in response to the air pollution issue in Nanjing. The chosen site is located in the northern part of Nanjing city. Due to rapid urbanisation, this area needs more residential development. Plants including trees, bushes and ivy are key elements to purifying the air. The building is designed in a way to support a huge amount of plant-life on its exterior, including the roof and facade.

The traditional Chinese drawings emphasise harmony between people and their environment. The landscape can become a medium to accommodate the community.

The interesting space quality of stalagmites emphasises the natural elements at play in the building design. They also add more surface area to support more plants. The building surface will be adorned with highly efficient airfiltering plants, which are boston ivy vines.

These hark back to a bye-gone era in Nanjing when ivy covered most residential houses. The entire project functions as a community, including a sports center and community social space. The objective of this is to combine healthy activities with an idyllic natural setting.

Two forces acting on Melbourne as a city are precinct structure plans (PSP) and major infrastructural projects, such as MMRP (Melbourne Metro Rail Project). Both things are operations at an XL scale, often at the expense of places with character, and justified to maintain the city’s posting for world class ‘liveability’.

In a major project setting, an alternative model of development has been proposed, one which is not predicated on vacant land. The is in response to countless characterless developments both in the inner city and suburban Melbourne.

The brief for the project is 400 new homes for residents displaced by MMRP’s construction. Design begins by looking at the particular characteristics of place, and uses it to make an XL proposition for development.

Story of Yesterday, A Cautionary Tale Siman Wang Supervisor: Ian Nazareth

The project is autobiographical, presenting a story of Handan – an industrial city in China. It is one of the most polluted cities and its residences suffer from the adverse effects of environmental pollution and related fatal diseases.

The project assumes the closure of the polluting factory.

In its new context, the site demonstrates various phases of remediation. It is not entirely cleansed or purified, but the whole site is completely transformed into a post-industrial park and research facility. In the center of the site, a dome encloses part of the polluting factory infrastructure – a relic from yesterday, including workshops, chimneys, toxic air, polluted water and soil. The world inside the dome is an abandoned and dreadful place and only limited numbers of scientists and authorised tourists can stay in site, all clad in protective gear. The bear witness to the cautionary tale of the recent past, delving into a story of the yesterday.

Tourists are confronted with contrasting and co-existing experiences – the toxic remains of the polluting factory inside the dome and the transformed, clean world outside the dome. The architecture is a catalyst to amplify the conditions leaving a much deeper impression on tourists.

The project is also symbolic, the icons of the previous age in China’s economy growth point the way forward.

Situated on a “typical block” in south- east suburb Bentleigh, the life of this project is shaped by the courtyard home and the intricate neighbourly relationships and nuances of everyday life contained within. Studies of “neighbourhood relationships” conflate into an architectural language that alludes to the tense yet freeing nature of suburbia and the neighbours that come along with it. Drawing upon their perceived attitudes and gestures, the design transforms them into elements that define the scale, material and composition of these dwellings.

The architecture in this collection resists the idea of repetitive housing modules, but is instead driven with intent to pursue a personal and culturally honest identity.

Simultaneously it provides an activated front yard-back yard community - a far cry from the existing orange brick dwellings that share the site. It is a project driven with the means of not being fixated on a specific block, but can be recognised as a vibrant housing proposition to our Struggling Australian Reality.

New Hutong City

The site is located in a traditional Hutong block in Beijing.

The Hutong is a traditional local house and character of architecture in Beijing. It is mixed scale, having the courtyard and narrow streets. The Hutong neighborhood had once been dependent and interconnected to the market.

Questioning the local authority plan to demolish the local market and transform the site to office building schemes, this project tries to make a diverse city including the office building schemes and bring the market back for this Hutong block. The challenge of this generation is how the diversity and scale of the Hutong could integrate with a big scale commercial development proposed for the site.

Based on Feng Shui Theory, in ancient times, The Hutong house is separated by Sudoku and have their own logic these over time have been extended and subdivided and adapted, which creates specific urban fabric and subtle repetitions.

This project follows the way of Hutong development, making a code to design diversity. It sets 9 design elements including existing Hutong and runs on the site in the Sudoku rule, that archives random and diversity and integrated with the existing fabric, preserving the Hutong and Hutong life.

Turning Solid Into Void Into Solid Yiran Liu Supervisor: Peter Knight

The project is concerned with the City Square and is using the new metro tunnel, station, and entrances as a driver for a new change, but at the same time, reminding people of the history (what was there before).

In the last 40 years, City Square has already been completely demolished 3 times including the current cycle, because of the new history that Melbourne’s going to write – metro tunnel project. So, through its death and rebirth as an iterated process, people’s memory about it has been overwhelmed by time. So this project is about capturing the need for a signifier of transience and a celebration for the city. It is also about engaging with memory - for those that remember the old city square as well as those who have no memory of what was there before.

This project is a public swimming pool for the City of Melbourne. The site is located within Birrarung Marr, a section of parkland that sits on the edge of the central business district along the Yarra River. It is influenced by history, culture and activity and is the convergence of road, rail and river. The project is an opportunity to deal with the relationship between the city and the river’s edge, a condition that has slowly eroded since the early European settlement.

The project also looks at contextual themes of the site while reinstating the connection between the urban fabric of the city, the river and the sporting precinct of Melbourne. Since the 1970s, the city of Melbourne has transformed from a manufacturing metropolis towards an event city of sporting and cultural activity. The pool is an important part of Australian culture and identity and posses many different forms which engage with a multicultural audience.

Urban Degustation

This project is about a collective memory of Public Market and Urbanization, the site located at the car parking area of Queen Victoria Market, trying to examine the relationship between urban and public market, architecture and degustation. The ground level is an extension of the Market and the upper level is an extension of the cityscape, in between the spaces, the main programs are cooking school, restaurants and cinema.

The proposal aims to create a public space to link the market and apartment together. It is talking about the ingredients travel through the spaces and becoming a taste of memory. It is talking about the spatial quality influences each other and creating new experiences.

When the memories of the surroundings travel into the architecture, the traits are merged together as well, so that it can be read the roof typology from the market, the cityscape from the city. All of these features bring people together and create new memory of life.

This project proposes a mixed use complex library that engages with the underlying suburb, community and cultural systems that organize the district.

It aims to provide and encourage a dynamic public space while linking the local residential neighborhood back to the main public building in Whitehorse city.

The project is trying to physicalize the Dewey Decimal Classification System then link different function of space to different category of system. Those space will like symbolic beacon of Dewey Decimal System which make people more easily to find the book they want. Every single space also inherit the local identity from different historical building in the local neighborhood.

Another important part of this library is the rooftop. Every thing of the library are build under one big roof which citizen can easily access and walk around, different events like Sunday market, art festival, music show, etc. can be held in the big roof.

The overall spatial and formal language of the project is categorised by three main influences; Abbotsford Convent as a historical precedent for women’s refuge, Robin Boyd’s mid-century homes as domestic precedents for framing private courtyards and finally, the existing strangeness of the context in Laurimar as a type of hypersuburbia. The project is largely a housing masterplan comprising of permanent and transitional housing units, shared communal facilities and varying typologies of open space. At the heart of the project is the ‘Refuge Hub’, a service accessible by both the public as well as onsite residents.

This project showcases the design of a suburban women’s refuge situated within Laurimar, a new housing development by Delfin in the northern suburb of Doreen. The northern suburbs of Melbourne face an offending domestic violence rate that is higher than the Victorian State average. The design contains three main cloister typologies, and explores the cloister as a type of interstitial space and a way to control privacy and security.

Wrapping Sunshine: Sunshine Textile Centre Shibo Du Supervisor: Ian Nazareth

Sunshine’s historical warehouse district exhibits Melbourne’s momentous cultural legacy. This ‘Suburb of warehouses’ was a hotbed for cultural integration. As the population grows, there are wider shifts in demographics in region west of Melbourne, it continues to be a large percentage of migrant growth, especially for those economically disadvantaged often thrust into a new environment and where they have limited ‘mobility’. Such as language barriers, many of their skills may no longer be applicable. There is limited scope to communicate, to integrate, to develop skills. Such of these ‘barriers of entry’ make Sunshine still lacks of vitality.

My project exploits textile as metaphors to resurrect Sunshine’s bygone era, promulgate global multiculturalism, and demonstrate Sunshine’s trading and cultural lineage. The properties of textile are infused to provide a cultural narrative and to provoke a sensory experience. The austere warehouses are perceived as a dead ‘solid’ block and textiles are weaved throughout the site as ‘void’ to reignite the spirit of Sunshine.

Atherton Gardens is a social housing estate located in south Fitzroy, developed by the housing commission of Victoria during the slum reclaim movement from mid-60s to the early 70s. Atherton garden is an experiment of the post-war modernism, with the contemporary utopian architectural idea of 4 towers in the garden.

By superimposing the Chinese micro district planning as my personal position onto the site, my thesis aims to bring public life and aboriginal culture back to Atherton Garden. As the prospect of environmental stability slips away and we experience a climate that becomes increasingly unstable, the challenge is how to adapt coastal environments in a post climate change future.

The scenario is in 50 years when a dystopian future emerges. A time that is characterised by increasing storms, floods, rising sea levels and bushfires.

Sea Change identifies the future threats to the coast and how this would not only affect the lifestyle of many Australian’s but also the infrastructures that support them. Reciprocity

Located in Preston, the project focuses on an intergenerational facility for the elderly and young children.

There is an increasing aging population in developed nations including Australia. As such I the project looks out how the development of new elderly residences could take into consideration the mental health of the residents. Approximately 43% of elderly Australian’s experience isolation and boredom in aged care facilities.

Internationally inter-generational facilities have explored how the engagement with young children has reduced a sense of isolation in the elderly residents.

The project explores the idea of reciprocity; the practice of exchange for mutual benefit. In particular how the interaction between the young and old can be mutually beneficial. As well as how the idea of reciprocity can extend into the surrounding context. The architecture of the project explores the typologies of cloisters and pavilions, which re-occur in child care and aged care. It explores how the combination of these typologies and the introduction of a public park can help to foster reciprocal relationships between the user groups and wider public.

This project is about designing a set of infrastructure through architecture for developing countries in an effort to combat anthropogenic climate change and energy consumption from the construction of buildings.

With Delhi’s economy set to skyrocket and population to increase at twice the rate than China, it presents an opportunity to explore different building methods to design low carbon towers to accommodate. With the lack of technology in third world countries to just green wash buildings like in wealthier parts of the world, my project explores mycelium as a building material and how it affects traditional building typologies.

A material and a building that shares a continuous life cycle that decomposes and is re-used for future construction. The infrastructure designed bases itself on multiple functions as the newly born city decomposes and continues to grow. Encompassing and ever evolving city that grows, changes and rebuilds over time. The project is not speculating on the future, but rather designing a set on interventions that will give rise to a particular vision for the future.

‘HYPERBIA’ is an exploration of a new urban scheme for a highly dense community of residence. It’s a dense strip of amenity paired together with particular elements of the lost suburban culture, the strip represents infinity and how this condition can be expanded out further into the suburbs.

As Melbourne’s growth boundary is expanding further out and new suburbs are being introduced, my project explores a condition to infill existing suburbs. I have chosen a vacant block in Epping to test my project.

Epping is expecting a huge increase in population and housing. However to meet the needs plots are shrinking and subdividing to dense housing, which creates a change in the way we live and culture of our suburbs.

Some of the qualities of our Australian dream home are lost or forced to be taken out to further dense housing.

Resulting in losing some of the suburban qualities such as the backyard, front yard, porch, laundry, milk bar, cloths line etc.

Through my project, I have created a new scheme that celebrates and amplifies the architecture that provides residence with the experiences of the lost qualities, paired together with the day-to-day amenities needed to function a community of residence. The architecture embraces suburbia with its colour, material, forms, ornaments and attention to signs, symbols and billboards.

This project has allowed me to force a change to the generic suburban model and create new opportunities and potentials for a dense community.

This proposition explores the potential of underutilised spaces that have a heavy infrastructural and natural environmental presence in Melbourne. Through 3 scales, the project provides an approach to dealing with these brownfield sites that have traditionally created barriers and boundaries of both a physical and cultural nature.

It explores and breaks down what has been seen as an undesirable space for development and habitation.

This boundary condition has been investigated in the proposition through the knitting together and extension of the sites surrounds, by implementing an extension of roads and existing building boundaries into the site, and replicating existing materiality and formal motifs, to drive cohesion and connection back into the existing site.

Suburb Hub

Jing-Yun Chang Supervisor: Vicky Lam

Located in the southeast of Melbourne where beyond the last station of Cranbourne line, Suburb Hub speculates on a civic building with a metro station for a new suburb which expected to grow large population in Cranbourne East. The proposal encourages to create an attraction for both visitors and residents gathering in this station, connecting to the surrounding area through the idea of a new civic centre. It investigates public building between users and station by hybrid programs with civic spaces, transport, and a garage.

The station responds to the environment by raising the building landscape up to a smooth appearance among the vast and flat indoor sports facilities and the new detached dwellings. Sitting in the corner of the edge between residential and recreation area, the station bends itself to connect both sides on the ground with commercial space and pedestrian circulation that provides a gathering spot for collecting the public events. Through linking these areas by a giant curved roof that covers the station with the parking facility, the transport and civic activities occur inside of the cave-like concourse that presents a new civic gesture for the rising suburbs in Melbourne.

The Vending Library

What is the fate of a public library?

The Vending Library locates itself in Malaysia (Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur), a small developing country with a plenty number of libraries being built across its fourteen states â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but going to a library isnt a very popular culture over there. Presumably perhaps because reading leisurely is not a common trait for Malaysians and it is assumed that people think libraries are spaces only to get books, and that is all, making the libraries in Malaysia remain empty in certain locations.

But this project aims to turn that situation around with an idea of an innovative library being introduced in Kuala Lumpur. A library that provides more than just books. A place of where learning is being redefined - learning is a 3D process and The Vending Library extends the capacity of an ordinary library to achieve this mission, to revamp its significant role as a public engager in the Malaysian civic culture and engagement.

Sunshine

Samuel Conkie Supervisor: Emma Jackson

This project is about the Middle-Western suburb of Sunshine being designated by the Government as a metropolitan and national employment hub, and its potential as the capital of the West as Melbourne grows into a polycentric city of 8 million by mid century.

Sunshine was born from bold and aspirational industrial beginnings and has transformed over the years into an incredibly culturally and ethically diverse region through immigration and refugee settlement. At the same time, the region has hemorrhaged its manufacturing industry, had a lot of its built history erased and replaced with car parks and shopping centres and has been marred with social and image issues exacerbated by the media and stemming from a lack of investment in its people, economy and buildings.

This project explores how this capital of the West could be generated in a way that attempts to responds to the areas history, location, demographics, employment and social challenges and begins to reinvent the perception of the area through industry and architecture that is distinctive and born from Sunshine.

The project envisions Sunshine as a media and arts hub, and uses this new economy to try and produce an aspirational, theatrical, whimsical and unorthodox version of what Sunshine could be.

This project proposed a new library on the site which located in Xiancun village, Guangzhou which has a history of almost 800 years. It co-exists with retained old buildings, inherits its spatial language in a positive way, and redefines a library as an institution no longer exclusively dedicated to the book, but as an information kaleidoscope - a memory collector, a living room and backyard garden in a concrete jungle.

As an information kaleidoscope, it is more than just a building. It can spread knowledge using various medium.

It if not only about reading, but also looking at the history of the city, listening to a story from an elder. It is dynamic rather than static. Each person can uncover his or her own experience.

As the memory collector, it documents important incidents in the history of the village. By retaining the river-side facade, keeping some old handshake housing as archive exhibition space, using the performance of ancestor shrine, the project attempts to celebrate the long history with the missing pieces. Those memories are constantly collected and are never forgotten.

As the Living Room & Backyard of the city, it contains a cafe, recreation space and serves as public function space when required.
