WHAT IS CITY

A city is a large human settlement. It can be defined as a permanent and densely settled place with administratively defined boundaries whose members work primarily on non-agricultural tasks. Cities generally have extensive systems for housing, transportation, sanitation, utilities, land use, and communication. Their density facilitates interaction between people, government organisations and businesses, sometimes benefiting different parties in the process

“La Ville Radieus(1924 ) represented an utopian dream to reunite man within a wellordered environment. Unlike the radial design of the Ville Contemporaine, the Ville Radieuse was a linear city based upon the abstract shape of the human body with head, spine, arms and legs. The design maintained the idea of high-rise housing blocks, free circulation and abundant green spaces proposed in his earlier work. The blocks of housing were laid out in long lines stepping in and 0ut. and were raised up on pilotis. They had roof terraces and running tracks on their roofs.

By shifting key components of Mexico’s urban fabric to the vertical dimension, a new threedimensional urban organizational grid is formed. The street is continued from the ground plane and becomes the connecting thread linking the entire tower. The street reacts to sunlight, wind, adjacencies and population density, as it sometimes widens for commercial activity, an open green space, or to provide visual and circulatory freedom. The tower’s structural framework affords the design a sense of flexibility, allowing it to be adapted to the community’s needs over time. The system has the potential to support a series of vertical neighborhoods that grow around and into one another. Sub-public and private spaces evolve organically, creating complex urban spaces similar to those of historic Mexico.

Mining The city ???

Melbourne and Victoria need to adapt to handle this social and economic transition. The central city will continue to be Melbourne’s largest concentration of employment. National employment and innovation clusters in the suburbs will be a focus for knowledgebased and high productivity jobs. Together with key industrial precincts, transport gateways, health and education precincts and metropolitan activity centres, these clusters will attract investment and stimulate employment. Targeting development and infrastructure investment in these key employment areas will maximise the city’s productivity— positioning Melbourne as Australia’s pre-eminent knowledge economy, services sector and freight hub.

(W)ego House is an installation of several rooms made to fulfil idealistic but egoistic perspectives in a limited space. When confronted with the dreams of others, users must learn to negotiate with each other to optimise use of limited urban space. “The Why Factory and MVRDV show works that demonstrate the beauty of the existing and future urban village”, says Winy Maas, MVRDV co-founder. “Individualism is paired with density and collectivism, where ego becomes wego.”

While some might look at (W)Ego City and see a playground where they can choose the customized residence of their heart’s desire, others see a maze of ridiculous spaces that aren’t just unavailable to them, but produce irregular, impractical, virtually unusable ‘leftover’ spaces that would likely rent for lower prices.

The Vertical Village: Individual, Informal, Intense envisioned a new model for the development of Asian cities. MVRDV and The Why factory proposed The Vertical Village, a three-dimensional community intended to bring back personal autonomy, diversity, flexibility and neighbourhood life to cities in Asia.

Urban development platform Traditional cities use the ground as the basic development platform. All infrastructure and buildings are constructed on this basis. However, for vertical urban development, the basic plane of urban development is placed above the ground, so it needs to be rebuilt. A relatively stable and flat development plane. Compared with the previous vertical cities, such platforms are often small or fragmented because of the modular building units. So I think the development of a three-dimensional (vertical) city requires basic development. The integrity of the plane.
