Start where you are
A healthy body contributes to a strong mind and a hardy spirit MY NEIGHBOR ISAAC, who is 30 years younger than I am, invited me to go with him to the local climbing gym a few months back. I had been in a climbing gym a few times back in the ‘90s and I didn’t much care for it. But I decided to give it a try, and he had a free pass for the day that I could use. Man, was I pleasantly surprised. Dozens of ropes hung from many walls, several of them overhanging. At 59, I expected to be, by far, the oldest person in the room. I was wrong. Though the majority of the climbers were closer to Isaac’s age than mine, I spotted no shortage of gray hair and wrinkles in the room. And they were rockin’ it! The tone was completely accepting and easy. I joined that night. I have never been a gym guy but I had noticed a loss of upper-body strength and that my balance wasn’t what it once was. IS IT TIME TO give your home a facelift? Don’t wait until you decide to sell; make improvements now and enjoy them. Clean the yard of clutter, leaves and weeds. Pull out those tired, leggy bushes and replace them with flowering shrubs or a flower bed. Include some landscape mulch, rock or a boulder. Surround a tree with flowers. Power wash porch, sidewalk and walls. Refresh your door with polished knob, hinges, glass and paint. Download the Front Door Paint app (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/front-doorpaint/id649226406 ) to test colors. Add a seasonal wreath, door knocker or other decoration. Attach attractive house numbers. Revamp the welcome mat. Install or upgrade the lighting. Place a large flowering plant near the entrance. Add some chic fencing, a flea market bench or swing and decorative pillows. Consider window boxes and/or faux shutters. When finished, enjoy your guests’ and neighbors’ compliments.
Make your home sparkle SNOW MAY STILL be on the ground but Spring is upon us. Time to think of spring cleaning. Make a 30-day plan or go room-by-room and complete the following tasks. Declutter closets, cabinets, shelves, drawers and pantry. Line up four boxes marked donate, trash, store and keep. Donate or trash dated clothing, shoes, accessories, makeup and medicines. Once each space is empty, wash or dust before replacing items. In the kitchen, check the pantry for outdated items and discard. Wipe down walls, picture frames, lamps, blinds, window sills, live/silk plants and baseboards. Wash, dry clean, air or replace drapes, curtains, comforters, pillows and blankets. Dust anything and everything. Wash windows and screens or hire someone to do them. Switch out seasonal decorations. Sanitize appliances, phones and electronics. Finally, shampoo carpets and rugs. Then, open the windows. Let the sunshine and warm air refresh the interior.
Find your decorating style START BY CHECKING OUT magazines. Cut out the pictures that appeal to you. Spread them on a table and look for consistencies. Do they reflect country, rustic, traditional, eclectic or classic style? Do they feature natural materials, neutral or vibrant colors, fussy or clean-lined furniture, wood tones, airy or cluttered spaces, simple or busy patterns? Does your wardrobe reflect the same style? What is your lifestyle? Outdoor activities rather than indoor? Do you need easily cleaned décor or scratch-proof surfaces because of grandchildren? Pull out all your decorative pieces. Look at each individually. Does it create joy? If not, have a yard sale or sell it on social media. Then, purchase pieces that do create joy. Using what you have to create a theme may simply consist of changing colors, pillows or other décor. It doesn’t have to be expensive.

Take some social medicine for emotional wellness
RESEARCH SHOWS THAT as we age, we place a higher value on emotional wellness, which often is enhanced by being in positive relationships. “Social relationships are often the reason why people, especially older adults, find their lives meaningful,” says Manfred Diehl, university distinguished professor in CSU’s Department of Human Development and Family Studies. “Knowing that other people need us and enjoy our presence and companionship
16 |
Fifty&Better
gives us a sense of purpose and direction. This need for meaningful social relationships tends to increase as we get older.” Additionally, friends help us cope with loss and life transitions, which often occur at increasing rates as we get older. Conversely, “social isolation is often a main cause for feelings of loneliness and it is well documented that loneliness is a major cause in developing depression.” So, do yourself some good. Be social.
Remember when? MANY PEOPLE ACCEPT that becoming forgetful and perhaps a bit daft are just part of getting old, but cognitive health experts and research say it isn’t so, and you can do a lot to prevent cognitive decline. “Sixty to 70 percent of what impacts us is lifestyle,” says Rich Shipman, a memory fitness facilitator with UCHealth Aspen Club. He says one strategy to prevent mental health issues is to decrease stress in ways that you enjoy, like listening to music, taking a walk or practicing yoga. Dr. Cory Carroll, a Fort Collins family physician, feels “A healthy mind and body is influenced primarily by the food we eat. He recommends eating a wholefood, plant-based diet. “It’s scientifically proven to promote health, whereas the typical American diet promotes disease.” And of course, do things that keep neurons firing strong, like reading, working puzzles and engaging in crafts. Also know that hanging out with other people is just as effective as working puzzles. The bottom line? Exercise, eat well, socialize and keep learning new things. Your brain and your body will thank you.
Pump yourself up IF GETTING OLDER IS getting you down, consider pumping up. “One of the best ways to keep muscles healthy and strong is through exercises called strength training—sometimes known as weight lifting or resistance training,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Yuri Coneascenco, a NoCo 50-something Olympic lifter and coach who calls herself “The Crushing Russian,” says strength training has helped her not only feel strong but also vibrant and confident. She says, when she’s working out, “Older gym folks look at me like I am a crazy phenomenon, but I am trying to be a sport ambassador and show to everybody, no matter how old you are, that lifting weights is a great way to stay in shape and challenge yourself.”

Team of REALTORS® at The Group, Inc. are committed to serving you as your Senior Real Estate Specialists. When four licensed Realtors® at The Group, Inc. decided to form a team specializing in assisting aging clients, it was not only for business reasons, but for personal reasons as well. Each shared their personal experience dealing with the challenges of guiding an aging parent or loved one through the process of leaving their long term home for more age appropriate living arrangements. They knew they wanted to dedicate part of their business to assisting seniors and their family members with changing lifestyles, by providing options and resources that specifically meet those needs. Deanna McCrery, Carol Voorhis, Anna Ditorrice-Mull and Lisa Hite, all with The Group, Inc. in Fort Collins, are experienced residential REALTORS® working as a team to assist this market niche with their real estate needs. Benefits of Working with an SRES® Selling—Selling a home is rarely simple—and selling a senior’s home can add additional considerations and complexity. Your SRES® can modify some aspects of their marketing efforts to meet the individual needs of senior homeowners. Staging your home—Preparing your home for showing to the public is called staging. The goal is to put the home’s best foot forward to prospective buyers. Staging takes place before the For Sale sign goes up. Packing and moving—Moving from the family home can be overwhelming, especially if you are facing a lifetime of possessions and must make choices about what to bring and what to let go. These decisions can be paralyzing because each possession often triggers a walk down memory lane. Our pool of vendor resources can assist you with this process. Our team of SRES® designated REALTORS® is qualified to address the special needs of home buyers and sellers age 50+. Whether you or your family member is seeking additional information as you start this process, planning for the future and if you need immediate assistance with buying or selling a home, we can help. Get moving! Staying active at 50, 60, 70, 80 and beyond
Katie Harris THE RECREATION AND FITNESS INDUSTRIES have witnessed an interesting phenomenon in recent years, with the baby boomers reaching senior-hood. The largest generation to-date to surpass age 50, the boomers are determined to remain physically fit, and require a larger selection of options for doing so than ever before. “It’s a really different generation than we’ve ever had in the 20 years I’ve been in the field,” says Tiffany Skoglund, supervisor at the Greeley Active Adult Center. “The baby boomers want really

competitive, physical types of stuff.” With so many newly 50-plus adults arriving on the scene, Skoglund says the gap between the active generation and older seniors is widening, when it comes to recreational interests. Varying needs for varying ages “While we’re trying to cater to our younger, 50 and up members, we’re still programming for our folks who are a little older, a little more frail, and starting to experience declining health,” says Skoglund. “Our 70-plus folks are inter-
ested in keeping their minds active as well as their bodies.” These varying needs have given way to a whole host of new activities geared toward the 50-plus crowd at local recreation and active adult centers. From book clubs to badminton, there are dozens upon dozens of ways to stay active these days, no matter your interest or ability level. “Here at the Greeley Active Adult Center we have so many things our active adults can do to stay active: pool tables, table tennis, racquetball, cornhole,” says Skoglund. “Shuffleboard is

hugely popular and a great sport to get you moving. Pickleball is a good choice for people whose knees have gone bad.” Skoglund says that conversely, for many older seniors just getting dressed, getting out of the house and feeling like part of the community is a huge step, whether it be joining a walking group, taking a class to help with balance, or even heading to the active adult center to knit for an hour. “I really emphasize the social part of being active for older folks,” she says. “The camaraderie of getting out and being involved in something can
be just as beneficial to your health as the physical part.” Mindset’s what matters Seniors who want to improve their physical health but feel hindered by their age can take heart. According to Todd Grauvogl, a personal trainer at Chilson Recreation Center who primarily works with seniors, when it comes to a decline in health and fitness, it’s not an issue of age so much as activity level. “I see young people not in great shape and I see older people all gung-ho about working out,” he said. “I have a
72-year-old woman lifting weights with the younger generation. I have 60-yearold body builders. It’s not so much your age as your mindset that matters.” Grauvogl says the main focal points for the majority of his 50-plus clients are balance, bone strength and life expectancy. “My clients want to stick around a lot longer,” he says. “They want to be there for their families. They want to work on their balance to prevent falling and getting hurt. Females in particular want to work on getting stronger as their bone density starts to decline.”
Fifty&Better | 27
Activities for every age Like Skoglund, Grauvogl says, no matter your age or ability level, any activity that gets you out of the house and moving will benefit your health, and there are plenty of options available that won’t cost you a dime. “Get out and walk, or bike when the weather’s nice,” he says. “Hike if you can. Walk your dog. Go swimming. Find a group of neighbors or an activity center where you can meet up with others and be active with people of your own generation.” Skoglund says walking is a great option for both physical and mental well being. “Most indoor malls allow people to come in and walk, as do any of the parks in every community,” she says. “Bittersweet Park in Greeley, for example, is a beautiful and popular park to walk in.” Skoglund adds that the Larimer County Office on Aging (970-498-7750, www.larimer.co.networkofcare.org/aging/) offers free activity programs to those who qualify, and that most senior and active adult centers offer inexpensive memberships as well as drop-in options for seniors. “Folks can stop in for a water-walking or yoga class, which are great for working on cardio and maintaining healthy hearts, weight and blood pressure,” she says. These types of activities are also easy on the joints, which can be a big challenge for anyone dealing with joint issues such as knee and hip replacements, according to Grauvogl. “We know that today’s seniors aren’t just seniors, they’re active adults, too,” says Skoglund. “With people retiring earlier, staying active is big. Our goal and mission at the Greeley Active Adult Center is to keep people out, and keep them actively living their lives.” Grauvogl says the first step to a healthier lifestyle is reaching out. “Try to make a connection with someone who you can do things with, who can help you out,” he says. “Having someone as your support helps get you motivated. If you don’t know of anyone, go to your local rec center and join a program or activity with people of the same generation. “With many of my clients, we do a lot of talking, but we work out, too. Sometimes having that person to connect with makes all the difference.” 28 |

The ABCs of CBD The grocery store, gas stations, even Amazon, all sell CBD. How do I know what is good quality? What is the big fuss? Does it REALLY work on pain, stress, and sleep? Isn’t it all just marijuana? CBD (cannabidiol) products typically contain between 0%-0.3% THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and are from a variety of the cannabis plant commonly known as hemp. At this low amount of THC, there is no psychoactive feeling of being “stoned,” or “high.” Instead, you are accessing the medicinal qualities of the plant. CBD may provide relief from many symptoms including pain and stress, and it may provide a more restful night’s sleep. When considering any new intervention, it is prudent to speak with your doctor. Then, seek a good quality source, preferably a local store that specializes in CBD. These stores should have a copy of a Certificate Of Analysis (COA) for each product they carry which shows the third-party test results of what is in the product. Many of our customers find CBD to be effective when taking the strength

that works for them. For localized pain, a topical salve high in CBD and that has low or no THC typically provides relief with virtually no side effects. For wide-spread pain, stress, or a better night’s sleep, choose a low or no-THC gummy, gel capsule, or CBD oil. At Canna World Market in Loveland, we will take the time to listen, and provide the information you need to make your best decision. For a free CBD consultation, or to join us at one of our free events, call or find us on Facebook.

Do LOUD sounds bother you? The word “hyperacusis” literally means excess hearing. The name combines the Greek prefix “hyper,” which means “over,” implying excess or exaggeration, with “akousis,” which means hearing and is the root word of “acoustic. Hyperacusis is a life-altering hearing condition that causes one to experience loudness intolerance or increased sensitivity to noise. It’s typically a condition that someone is not born with but develops, either gradually or suddenly, as a result of the following causes, per the American Academy of Otolaryngology– Head and Neck Surgery: • Head injury • Ear damage from toxins or medication • Lyme disease • Airbag deployment • Viral infections involving the inner ear or facial nerve (Bells palsy) • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome
Hyperacusis affects an estimated one in 50,000 people and can occur either unilaterally (in one ear) or bilaterally (in both ears). Reactions to noise may result in feelings of discomfort, covering ears, tension, anger, anxiety, and pain. Those who live with hyperacusis face aversion to everyday sounds at decibel levels that do not bother others, such as: running water, car engines, conversations, kitchen appliances, voices speaking on the telephone, bicycle pedals, crunching leaves, or vacuum cleaners. Because individuals with hyperacusis are not able to tolerate noises like those listed above, their quality of life is compromised. They experience great difficulty moving about, traveling, and communicating with others. Consequences can include social isolation, anxiety, depression, lack of concentration, and insomnia.
Hyperacusis is distinct from tinnitus (ringing in the ears), but there is a high degree of comorbidity between them. An estimated 86% of hyperacusis patients also have tinnitus and 30–40% of tinnitus patients also show symptoms of hyperacusis. It has been speculated that tinnitus and hyperacusis have a shared etiology or might exist due to the same pathological mechanism. Source: Healthy Hearing Foundation

Volunteer enriches community
Harry Love shares his diverse talents LINDA L. OSMUNDSON
EARLY IN HIS COLLEGE DAYS, Harry Love considered teaching in a college or university. But by the time he graduated with a physics degree, he was tired of school and academics. He applied and was hired by a large oilfield service company. After 37 years traversing much of the world for that company, Harry retired 16 years ago with his wife Jody and moved to Loveland. Once in Loveland, retirement didn’t last long. He became a Master Gardener to learn about high plains plants. His knowledge led to the Loveland Youth Gardeners and resulted in a board position. His career in management lent itself to other volunteer opportunities like the High Plains Arts Council where he again served on the board. Through the Adopt-a-Garden program, Harry volunteered to maintain Loveland’s Benson Park gardens. He and Jody 64 |

became board members for Friends of the Library. Harry feels his most rewarding volunteer activity is with VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) and TCE (Tax Counseling for the Elderly). Under the direction of the Internal Revenue Service, Harry helps low- and moderate-income taxpayers complete their annual tax returns at no cost. Volunteers are not necessarily CPAs. Like Harry, they come from all walks of life. He and other preparers are trained and recertified in tax law every year. They use IRS provided materials, software and standard tests. All prepared returns are tested by an IRS software program for mistakes before submission. Although their tax preparation is not guaranteed like paid preparers, Harry is proud of their 98-percent success rate. Last year, local volunteers in northern Colorado provided 3000 seniors with more than
4000 federal and state returns. Harry functions as one of several site coordinators for the seven locations in Loveland and Fort Collins. He maintains the websites for both VITA and TCE. He also fills out tax returns in various locations like senior centers, libraries, senior living facilities and in a client’s home. Harry works with a woman now 97 and today prepares taxes for her children. Harry says, “VITA and TCE operate all year as well as during the tax season. In the off season, we help people with problems such as those from prior tax returns.” Because of his connections to older adults, Harry recently trained to be a Senior Access Points Ambassador. In that capacity, he provides information to seniors who need assistance in other areas. Harry feels lucky to be involved in Larimer County. We are lucky to have him in the community.

Better Living
Bob Calhoune
Revisiting your story Be open to what moves us forward
TO LIVE FULLY AND CONSCIOUSLY on the ‘second half of life journey’ is to be open to what moves us forward in positive, meaningful, compassionate, creative and healthy ways. As important is honoring what has carried us to this point in life, influenced our path, fed our spirit. Looking back on decades lived, noting what was discovered through relationships, experiences, reading, writing and study—mining these precious resources, is a reminder of what has sustained, empowered, and moved us—and that we have not traveled this path alone. A common exercise at seminars focusing on the second half of life is the ‘life review’, an exercise designed to reengage with one’s past—revisiting transforming moments, significant personal encounters, insights that influenced self-concept and life decisions, all to help arrive at a deeper understanding of the core thread running through one’s life. After time reflecting within oneself, sharing with another participant helps deepen the experience, and what is found, when told honestly, our stories are more alike than different on this human journey. Distractions of day to day life, pressures of cultural norms, can lull us into forgetting what we already know about ourselves and the gift of breath. If you have journaled over your life, revisiting those old binders, notebooks and scraps of paper can bring alive precious insights into your personhood and lessons learned about the world now seen through more experienced eyes. Visiting places you or ancestors lived, as well as reliving significant pilgrimages taken over the years, is another way to appreciate the richness of your path and wisdom gained. This past Christmastime, my brother gifted me a small booklet of favorite quotes and phrases accumulated over the years—lines from spiritual texts, philosophers, historians, as well as from his own writings. I have a deeper appreciation for my brother as well as a new resource for my own growth. Often I think of books I have read and held on to, those I cannot let go, books I pick up from time to time over the decades, refer back to, even if just seeing titles on the shelf reminding me of a time, a topic, a reference point. I leave you with a poem written on one of those days when my piles of books and bookcases had my full attention.

Revisiting Underlines © Bob Calhoun in the bookcase along the study wall one by one they line up many with tattered covers folded corners these friends of mine holding something to which I have listened and embraced. Filled with riches some of which I could not resist with pen, underlining the word the phrase even the paragraph that jumped into my heart touched my soul. Underlines from the past notes written in the margins and the joy of revisiting them, looking to see why then, even now, they speak, shout out: “Pay attention!”, appreciating how they transcend the limits of what I see and touch… in this world with its props and noises. Relationship with the word, the pen and the line that underlines, as if returning to a mountain meadow Where decades ago I pondered the path before me And who I was.
