INTRODUCTION Welcome to the 2013-2014 edition of the Top Undergraduate Employers. This publication has been created based on the experiences of students as reviewed and rated on RateMyPlacement.co.uk. Six years ago, whilst studying at Loughborough University, we felt that there was a lack of information available when it came to making our own placement choices, therefore RateMyPlacement.co.uk was born. Since then, the website has become the UK’s leading resource for students looking for work experience and contains over 20,000 student-written reviews as well as hundreds of job opportunities. We’d like to extend a special thanks to PwC, our Premier Sponsor, as well as all of the other organisations who have contributed to this year’s Guide. Good luck with your search! Ali Lindsay, Chris Wickson & Oliver Sidwell, Co-founders, RMP Enterprise Ltd

WHAT’S SO IMPORTANT ABOUT UNDERGRADUATE WORK EXPERIENCE? Employability... Simply having a degree is no longer enough to secure a graduate job. From a survey of 250 companies advertising undergraduate opportunities, over 60% of them retain their interns and placement students as graduates, leaving the rest of the graduate population to fight for all other spaces available.

“Over 60% of employers retain intern and placement students as graduates” Source: National Undergraduate Employability Awards

Find out first-hand what a career is really like... It’s not all about securing a graduate job; it’s about finding out what it’s really like to experience the working world. It’s your chance to find out what you like and, just as importantly, what you don’t like!

Secure a graduate position in your final year... Imagine finishing your degree and walking into a job, hassle free? Well, a placement, internship, vacation scheme or insight gives you that foot in the door and the opportunity to network with the people who could help you secure a graduate job offer.

This figure rises to a shocking 75% of the graduate vacancies advertised in 2013 by City investment banks. And half the training contracts offered by the leading law firms are likely to be filled by graduates who have already completed work experience with the employer (Source: High Fliers Survey 2013).

Robyn, Talent Channels Officer, PwC

“You might not know it, but there’s a good chance you’re developing the skills we’re looking for every day. It could be through academic studies, extracurricular hobbies or sporting achievements. And a work experience programme is just one of the ways to realise your potential.” |9

WHAT TYPES OF OPPORTUNITIES ARE THERE? Placements

Industrial placement, sandwich year, year in industry, year-long internship A structured programme where you spend a full academic year working for one company (or sometimes two) as a full time employee before returning to university for your final year.

Internships

Work experience A formal and structured programme that typically lasts from four to 12 weeks over the summer period. Employers use such schemes to identify future graduate talent by introducing them to the company.

Vacation Schemes

Vac scheme, work experience Vacation schemes are a short period of work experience, specifically in a law firm. They usually run for one to two weeks (although they can be longer) and many law firms use them as a way of finding potential training contract recruits.

Insights

Short-term insight scheme, open day Insight days or weeks are primarily for first-year students, however many are open to all undergraduates. Taking place throughout the year, insights are designed to give a taster into the company or industry. They also allow the employer to identify future talent.

WHERE TO LOOK FOR OPPORTUNITIES YOUR UNIVERSITY Take full advantage of using your university careers service and your course placement officer if you have one. They have a wealth of experience and will be able to answer any questions you might have on online applications, CVs and cover letters. TOP TIPS TO IMPRESS...

1. Take a structured approach and don’t apply for hundreds of positions. Five to six well thought out and tailored applications will give you a better chance than a hundred mass produced applications 2. Take your time when writing applications. Ensure you’ve had time to really think about how you can represent your skills and experience. This is your one chance so don’t blow it! 3. Check, check and check again. Don’t let silly mistakes reflect badly on your application 4. Network with potential employers who you’ve met, perhaps on campus or at events, and on social networking sites - most organisations have official Twitter handles and LinkedIn groups 5. Think about how appropriate your personality and experience is for the role 6. Speak to your careers service / placement officer and ask for examples of tests and exercises to help prepare you for interviews and assessment centres 7. Mirror the way in which employees at the organisation dress and communicate. First impressions count 8. Get to know your interviewer. Be interested in what they have to say about the team, the company and themselves | 15

If you own a mobile phone, camera or MP3 player, the chances are that you regularly use an ARM® Powered® product. Our technology is at the heart of a wide range of digital products for use at home, work or on the move. There were 12 founding ARM engineers, who set themselves the bold objective that everyone worldwide should own at least one product based on ARM technology. Today, ARM is the world’s leading semiconductor intellectual property (IP) supplier. The ARM business model involves the designing and licensing of IP rather than the manufacturing and selling of actual semiconductor chips. We licence IP to a network of Partners who utilize ARM IP designs to create and manufacture systemon- chip designs, paying ARM a license fee for the original IP and a royalty on every chip or wafer produced. In addition to processor IP

and graphics processors, we provide a range of software development tools, physical and systems IP that enable optimized system-onchip designs. Headquartered in Cambridge, UK, ARM has grown rapidly and now has over 2500 employees across the world. ARM prides itself on being one of the best employers in the UK and globally. The company is building on this reputation by attracting top university talent to join the company with a range of schemes that are highly regarded by industry.

We’re just as interested in who you are as what you studied, because we’re looking for people who can bring something new to our business. Whatever your background, you’ll have a passion for finance, the ability to learn quickly, enthusiasm and the ambition to succeed in a changing industry.

Think ‘work, rest and play’. Think M&M’s, Uncle Ben’s, Pedigree, Whiskas and Wrigley, iconic billion-dollar brands. Think the world’s third-largest food company with over 72,000 associates and international operations in 370 locations. Know what makes Mars special? Think again. Sure, we’re one of the world’s leading food companies, but it’s more like a community than a corporate. Because we’re still privately owned. And that means it’s a place without any of the trappings of typical big business. It has a sense of humanity and a lack of vanity around leadership. A place with no private offices. Where the best parking spot is not taken by the CEO, but whoever arrives first. A place where some associates even bring their dog to work. If that kind of easy-going open structure grabs you, you’ll feel right at home with us.

!

@marsgradsuk

With a huge emphasis on developing our people, we have a passion and heritage for developing exceptional business leaders. A number of leading CEOs from the UK’s biggest businesses started their careers on Mars development programmes. We provide fantastic support, with mentoring and development from the brightest and best people in the industry. And we give you challenging real-life opportunities to help you achieve more. Transferring onto our graduate and high potential programmes is a real possibility, so that you can continue on your journey. And support our journey too - to improve how we treat our customers, communities and the planet. So that ultimately, we can all make Mars mean more.

Our student knew exactly how to float our boat. When it comes to moving through the water, speed and efficiency is the name of the game. We should know. Because we rely on water routes to transport our products and their raw ingredients all around the world. And when we wanted to connect that experience together, we called in Tom, a student on a placement with us. Ocean freight, fuel management, you name it, Tom got his head around it. He networked with our logistics teams in all corners of the world and went on to create a new Mars Global Logistics Knowledge Hub. So, thanks to Tom we’re now finding transport routes that are not only money savers, they’re faster and more environmentally friendly too. Leaner, meaner and greener. It’s what we call a win, win, win situation. It just goes to show. Give people freedom and responsibility, and they’ll go further than you ever imagined. mars.co.uk/graduates
