First Lady
A native of Las Vegas, Nevada, Jodi Nielsen earned a bachelor’s degree in French from Brigham Young University and a master’s degree in organizational development from Pepperdine University. Jodi worked in the high tech industry for over 18 years, including at Intel Corporation where she held positions in Human Resource Management, leadership and training development, as an internal organizational consultant, and a member of the acquisition integration team.
While working, she experienced a lot of pain in her arms and hands. She was referred to many different physicians to find out what was going on. She was eventually told she needed a nerve conduction study and was referred to Dr. Richard P. Nielsen, whom she later married.
Jodi and Dr. Nielsen have been engaged in humanitarian work in Africa for a combined 35 years to include work through their non-profit organization, World of Difference (worldofdifference.ngo), particularly in Africa (Kenya and Malawi). The focus of World of Difference is to enhance education, promote sustainable agriculture, and improve healthcare and wellness. The Nielsens have taken hundreds of volunteers to Africa in support of their projects over these many years.
Jodi and Dr. Nielsen have five children and seven grandchildren.
Dr. Jeff Rogers Honorary Doctorate Recipient Co-Founder of Child Legacy International
Jeff Rogers co-founded Child Legacy International (formerly known as Life Sowing Ministries) in 1987 to provide hope and humanitarian aid to the most disadvantaged rural populations in Africa.
With sought after expertise in rural development, he has spent over 30 years developing successful, sustainable initiatives in the fields of rural healthcare, well repair, vocational training, orphan care, and food and agricultural
programs in Africa. In addition to these endeavors, he has developed a state-of-the-art renewable energy system utilized in both Zimbabwe and Malawi and recognized as an ideal and sought after model by the governments of neighboring African countries.
Driven by a desire to do God’s will, he pastored a congregation of 500 for ten years and assisted in planting five additional churches in Zimbabwe. Beginning in 2003, he began advocating for the people of Zimbabwe in Washington D.C., earning him the opportunity to speak before the African Subcommittee. His work through Child Legacy International has garnished him multiple endorsements from Members of the U.S. Congress, as well as international government Ministries from Great Britain, Zimbabwe, and Malawi. He is an active Board Member for The Life Link, an international aid organization and Hallmark College, a U.S. based educational institution.
Dr. Richard P. Nielsen CommencementAddress
Founding University President & CEO
President Nielsen, a native of Spanish Fork, Utah, often credits the encouraging words and wisdom from his single mother growing up as the key to any success he has achieved. He earned a Bachelor of Science from Brigham Young University and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Utah, a Master of Science in neuro-kinesiology from the University of Washington, and a Doctor of Health Science from the University of St. Augustine with an emphasis in clinical electrophysiology.
Nielsen served in the U.S. Army National Guard for nearly six years and practiced his specialty of clinical electrophysiology (electroneuromyography) in the U.S. Navy Medical Service Corps for over 20 years. During his time in the Navy, he held several esteemed positions, including chief physical therapist for the entire U.S. Navy and physical therapy consultant to the U.S. Congress and the Senate, the Surgeon General, the Supreme Court, the Pentagon, and the White House.
Dr. Nielsen, along with his wife, Jodi, and eldest daughter, Kindee, founded two charitable foundations in Africa, Reach the Children and World of Difference. Since 2013, World of Difference has partnered with RMU to take graduate healthcare students and faculty to Kenya and Malawi to work in developing country hospitals and clinics.
In 2013, the Nielsens received the American Red Cross Humanitarian of the Year Award for their service in Africa. Dr. Nielsen has received several recognitions in the medical community, including the 2015 Leader of the Year Award from the American Physical Therapy Association and, in 2019, Utah Business Magazine’s Healthcare Hero of the Year Award for healthcare education. In 2022, the Utah Valley Chamber of Commerce named him as the Pillar of the Valley for 2023.

meaning of regalia
Significance of the Hood
The hooding portion of the Commencement ceremony dates back to the 12th and 13th centuries and signifies special recognition of master’s and doctoral degree candidates. Faculty members place the hood over the heads of the graduates, recognizing their success in completing the program and symbolically welcoming them as fellow scholars. The hood identifies the owner’s academic institution, degree, and field of study through the length and the colors of the lining and binding. Each graduate’s field of study is designated by its corresponding color as listed below.
