WELCOME

The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron (RNZYS) is New Zealand’s leading yacht club, and the largest sporting club in New Zealand. The RNZYS reached a major milestone in 2021, celebrating our 150th sesquicentenary year since our formation in 1871.

The RNZYS is still the official home of the America’s Cup after Emirates Team New Zealand, representing the RNZYS, successfully defended the oldest sporting trophy in the world at the 36th America’s Cup in Auckland in 2021.

Located at the Westhaven Marina, just 10 minutes from the CBD at the foot of the Harbour Bridge, we enjoy a spectacular outlook with some of Auckland’s best waterfront views.

One of only seven ‘Royal Yacht Squadrons’ in the world, we are proud of our heritage and legacy of success, and our unrivalled position in sailing history as the proud winner of every worldclass yacht race globally, including winning and successfully defending the America’s Cup, the most coveted prize in sailing.

RNZYS members continue to excel on the world stage, keeping us at the forefront of our inimitable sport.

Ours truly is a club where fledgling sailors can rub shoulders with those who have excelled on the global stage. The sailing stars of the future can be found honing their skills in our world-renowned Mastercard Youth Training Programme and RNZYS Performance Programme.

Our facilities are world-class, the location breathtaking. Ally that to the warmest of Auckland welcomes and a team of outstandingly motivated and conscientious staff dedicated to your service, and you will find ours is a dream venue for anyone wishing to celebrate a special occasion such as a wedding, celebration dinner, corporate conference, or you can join as a member and enjoy the wide variety of social, sailing and networking events we have on offer.

Member, potential member, corporate partner or function host, you will find everything you want – and more – at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. Our doors are open to you and we look forward to seeing you very soon.

A BRIEF HISTORY

Auckland’s hills and shores wrap around the sparkling Waitemata Harbour, making it a natural venue for boating of all types.

The foundations of the city were laid in 1840 and the occasion was immediately marked by a regatta on the harbour. It was an appropriate portent of things to come as yachting and boating flourished on the harbour and ultimately grew to enjoy an international reputation.

Eleven years later, a small group of yachtsmen made the first attempt to establish an Auckland Yacht Club. It was short-lived, as were several subsequent efforts at getting a club off the ground.

The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron traces its origin back to the 1871 incarnation of the Auckland Yacht Club, with 30 yachts and 120 members on its register.

By then, the city had grown from a scattering of tents and shacks into a much more substantial and thriving venture, with the harbour playing a central role in its progress.

By the turn of the century, yacht racing was a thriving sport, attracting crowds of spectators and detailed reports in the local newspapers. Under the leadership of some of the city’s prominent captains of industry and commerce, the AYC showed continued growth.

A tremendous rivalry between the Logan and Bailey boatbuilding families spurred the growth of an outstanding fleet of racing yachts, most of which joined the AYC fleet.

In 1901, the AYC changed its name to the New Zealand Yacht Squadron. The following year the Squadron celebrated a major milestone when it received a warrant in the name of King Edward VII elevating its status to a Royal club.

With this recognition membership numbers almost doubled from 157 in 1901 to 300 in 1903.

During both world wars, yacht racing was largely suspended in Auckland. Members of the RNZYS served in all theatres of both wars and in all the armed services. A number of members who owned launches, and were not able to serve abroad, were involved in harbour defence and patrol duties.

To accommodate steady growth, the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron moved through a succession of rented premises in the city until in 1955 it bought a handsome two-storey brick house in Parliament Street with sweeping views over the Waitemata Harbour. A decade later, the RNZYS acquired its current premises at Westhaven, first as a lease and subsequently as a purchase.

From the 1960s, the RNZYS was at the forefront of a steady rise in international competition. In 1966, James Davern sailed his yacht Fidelis across the Tasman Sea and swept to line honours victory in the gruelling 630-mile Sydney-Hobart Race. Fidelis set a new race record and the 17-hour margin between 1st and 2nd still stands as the longest in the race’s history.

Three years later, Chris Bouzaid and a RNZYS crew took on the elite of international yacht racing. Travelling to Heligoland, Germany, Bouzaid and his Rainbow II crew won the prestigious One Ton Cup against a line-up of seasoned competitors from the USA, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Sweden, Holland and Switzerland.

On the foundations laid by these successes, the RNZYS trophy cabinets have played host to some of the biggest prizes in world yachting including the Half, One and Two-Ton Cups, the Admiral’s Cup, the Kenwood Cup, the Champagne Mumm World Cup, the Whitbread Round the World Trophy, the Louis Vuitton Trophy and the America’s Cup.

Carrying the RNZYS burgee into battle, Team New Zealand won the America’s Cup in San Diego in 1995, then successfully defended it on the Hauraki Gulf in 2000.

After losing to Switzerland in 2003, the RNZYS became the only yacht club in the world to challenge and win the America’s Cup twice when Emirates Team New Zealand scored a 7-1 victory over Oracle Team USA in Bermuda in 2017.

Coinciding with the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron’s 150th sesquicentenary in 2021, Emirates Team New Zealand successfully defended the 36th America’s Cup in Auckland, defeating Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli 7-3 in the America’s Cup Match and ensuring the RNZYS remains the Home of the America’s Cup.

By agreement between the RNZYS and Emirates Team New Zealand, the 2024 defence of the America’s Cup will take place in Barcelona, Spain. The Challenger of Record is the Royal Yacht Squadron.

LET’S TALK ABOUT

ANTI-AGEING TEETH

Ageing is a natural process and your mouth is no exception

Left untreated, this can lead to irreversible problems – muscle ache, increased risk of decay, potential nerve damage needing root canal treatment or tooth extraction.

Anti-ageing dentistry creates a fuller, straighter, whiter and brighter smile. It can address wrinkles, lip fullness and cheek support for a more youthful smile and face as a whole.

WHAT CAN I DO?

We want to restore function and aesthetics by filling damaged areas - from a simple covering of exposed roots to strengthening with porcelain veneers - without unnecessary reduction of your teeth.

Prevention is the key to slowing down the ageing process. Find and treat problems early to prevent further damage and reduce the affected area.

WHY re-dental?

We preserve natural teeth with a conservative approach. We do not unnecessarily drill healthy tooth away.

We provide patient-centred care with painless anaesthetic, gentle hands and a soothing environment for your comfort. We develop long-term relationships and trust.

We stand by our work and provide aftercare.

How are your teeth?

Book your complimentary consultation now for your personalised anti-ageing solution email info@re-dental.co.nz call 09 600 1739 1 Jervois Road, Ponsonby re-dental.co.nz

We have many options available and would be delighted to discuss these as we invite you on a guided tour of our magnificent premises, essential to appreciate what a fabulous location this truly is. Having paid us a visit it will be so much easier to imagine enjoying canapés on the sun-drenched deck or sipping a glass of champagne on a perfect cloudless Auckland night with the bright lights of the city in the distance providing extra illumination to the stars overhead.

Our dedicated team are on hand to organise anything and everything you may need for your special day, providing personal and professional service from the time that you first call to the time you say your farewells.

The success of the most important day of your life means as much to our staff as it does to you and means you can relax and enjoy the company of your friends and family, free from worry.

It’s not just weddings though. Any occasion can be equally special. Simply find something to celebrate, get in touch and we can take care of the rest!

Versatility and choice are two words valued highly here by the Squadron’s corporate hospitality team. Put simply, come to us with your requirements and we will do everything we can to make them happen.

Taking guests out on the Harbour for a relaxing sail is the perfect way to entertain out-of-town clients or to help staff unwind at the end of a corporate event or conference.

If you are looking for something a little more dynamic, team-building exercises can be set up to take people out of their comfort zone. Sailing is a team sport and through this hands-on experience, your group will immediately see the results that can be achieved by working together.

Our qualified instructors are trained to encourage full participation and as your group may consist of both sailors and non-sailors no person will be left feeling confused by sailing jargon or unable to participate. Lessons can be provided before any on-water event. If your team needs to sharpen its competitive edge or let off steam after a long negotiation, then we can offer a sailing challenge to get their pulses racing. A Meetings and Events Package containing further information including menus, room, entertainment and seating options can be downloaded from our website, www.rnzys.org.nz

EDEN VILLAGE

Discover why John and Margaret love Eden Village.

It was John and Margaret’s daughter who suggested they look at Eden Village. “We never thought we would move into a retirement village” says John, but when they first saw their brand new apartment, they knew it was the one. “The sun was shining, it was beautiful. Our daughter said, ‘Look, you just couldn’t turn this apartment down.’”

Village size was key for the couple. “We were looking for something boutique,” reflects Margaret. “We liked that it was small and more intimate.” The tasteful décor and design also appealed, “the place is so light, open and airy,” she tells us.

Margaret and John are enjoying their newly found freedom.

“Our house was hard to maintain because of stairs, large grounds, and maintenance,” said John. Now, with plenty of activities to join in, and the time to enjoy them, Margaret says, “we’ve never been so busy!” Looking for boutique retirement living? You’ll feel right at home at Eden Village.

RACING PROGRAMME

The RNZYS offers a large number of sailing events and series throughout the year which encompasses all yacht and boating types. From the elite of world sailing to the novice newly graduated from our Sailing School, there is a series or event to suit.

Here at the Squadron you can go sailing nearly every day of the week in almost any sort of keel boat and multihull, from the one design fleets of the Elliott 7s, Young 88s, Stewart 34s, and MRXs, to mixed fleets of the Doyle Sails Wednesday & Doyle Sails Winter Series and Havana Club Rum Races. With the exception of the 36 Degrees Brokers Commodore’s Cup Series and the PIC Insurance Brokers Cruising Series, Squadron racing is open to members of any yacht club (different entry fees apply to non-members).

There is perhaps less competitive sailing to be found on weekends in the club calendar than might initially be expected, but that is by design, allowing time on the water for our Mastercard

Youth Training Programme or Performance Programme members and giving our many talented sailors the opportunity to carry the RNZYS colours at home and abroad in national and international competition, as so many of them invariably do with distinction throughout the year.

The following is an outline of the racing calendar enjoyed at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. It is a busy programme but has something for everyone all throughout the season!

SAILING - MAJOR EVENTS

In addition to the Squadron’s full calendar of regular competitions and club racing series, the RNZYS also hosts several major annual events.

These include match racing and fleet racing events, World and National Championships, as well as events that all club sailors can get involved in with their own boats.

With a well-organised and vastly experienced race management team, a spectacular sailing location and off-water facilities to match, the RNZYS provides a peerless choice of venue for major sailing events.

RNZYS Corporate Regatta

The RNZYS Corporate Regatta in early November is arguably the Squadron’s biggest event of the year.

The event features an invigorating afternoon of sailing, offering individuals and businesses the unique opportunity of a day competing with some of New Zealand’s best sailing talent.

This is one of the few events in the sailing world where you can find inexperienced sailors sailing shoulder to shoulder with Olympic medallists and America’s Cup winners.

Many of New Zealand’s top businesses are also there, appreciating the “win-win” chance that this regatta provides of hosting valued staff members or key clients for an afternoon of fun while at the same time benefitting a great and worthwhile cause.

A feast of international cuisine starting with prerace canapés on the deck and a plentiful supply of wine, beer and soft drinks help make this a day to remember.

The “après sail” lasts long into the night with live music and entertainment, and a live auction with some unique items and experiences that money can in fact buy, but only if the bid is a good one!

All funds raised from this event will support the Kawau Tree Planting and Reforestation Project – planting over 12,000 trees which will increase native birdlife on the island and the RNZYS International Sailing Fund that helps our most talented club sailors take their yachting careers to the international stage. If you want to purchase tickets, provide a boat or auction items - get in touch via: reception@rnzys.org.nz

Harken New Zealand Match Racing Championships

The Harken New Zealand Match Racing Championship sees up to 20 teams featuring some of New Zealand’s best sailors as well as international teams competing on identical Elliott 7 metre keelboats in a match racing event to determine the National Champions.

The Mastercard RNZYS Youth Training Programme and RNZYS Performance Programme always have a couple of teams taking part, with other teams from America, Australia, New Caledonia and other countries all over the world sending their best youth teams to take part. This event is always a great showcase of the rich vein of youth sailing talent that is present in the world today.

NZ Open Keelboat National Championship

Two days of intense keelboat racing in the MRX Yachting Fleet of Farr MRX Keelboats, on Auckland’s world famous Waitemata Harbour. Two full days of Windward Leeward racing with some of the best Keelboat racers the country has to offer.

This is the Women’s Keelboat Nationals and includes two full days of Windward Leeward and Harbour racing. Always tightly contested with teams old and new, young and old. The winning team are crowned NZ Women’s National Keelboat Champions!

Barfoot & Thompson NZ Women’s Match Racing Championship

A match racing regatta just for the ladies, with the winning team crowned National Champions. This event attracts high calibre female teams from all over the world to compete in a top-quality match racing event in the Squadron’s fleet of Elliott 7 keelboats.

Harken National Secondary Schools Keelboat Championship

The Harken National Secondary Schools Keelboat Championship attracts secondary school aged sailing teams from all over New Zealand to compete in the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadrons fleet of Elliott 7 Keelboats. Always sold out with 20 teams, this event includes three days of fleet racing. This event is a great feeder for the RNZYS Mastercard Youth Training Programme, with many competing teams going on to have successful sailing careers.

City of Sails Auckland Regatta

Held in June, the City of Sails Auckland Regatta is one of the highlights of the sailing year, not only in the City of Sails, but the whole of New Zealand.

A joint initiative between the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and Bucklands Beach Yacht Club, it features two days of racing including windwardleeward sprints and longer harbour courses.

The social side of the regatta is equally important, with a party on the Saturday night and a prize-giving at the conclusion of the event on the Sunday.

CRUISING - SAIL AND LAUNCH

The PIC Insurance Brokers

Cruising series at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron has been a valued part of our club for many years.

Open to everyone who belongs to the Squadron, whether they own a launch, motor yacht or yacht, its members share a love of sailing, exploring, and enjoying good company.

The group heads off for various destinations throughout the year, enjoying a few social activities – ranging from a quiet little drink to a beach party with BBQ and prizegiving– when they get there.

These cruising rallies are known as the PIC Insurance Brokers Cruising Series. Yes, there is a trophy awarded at the Squadron Summer Series Prizegiving, but the much more important core values the group lives by are the three Fsfriendship, fun and family.

The series includes 6 cruising rallies throughout the summer. On top of those, other cruising events includes the annual Colin Forbes Easter Rally, the Sundowner Beach Party, the annual Rayglass Squadron Picnic and the newly established shortest day winter cruising rally. Social boats are encouraged to register with the sailing office (raceoffice@rnzys.org.nz) to keep up to date with the party location on the day. & BOOKKEEPING SOLUTIONS

The RNZYS site is located within Bon Accord Harbour, Kawau Island. It is the south western headland of Smelting House Bay, immediately adjacent to the historic copper smelting site.

The property is largely scrubby coastal forest, which has been impacted by grazing wallabies and invasive plants, including some areas of large pine and macrocarpa trees.

The RNZYS are upgrading facilities on the site, including improving the amenity and ecological value of the landscape, restore the ngahere mauri (forest lifeforce) and providing habitat for the threatened native species such as kiwi and weka that live on Kawau Island.

Our vision is that kiwi and other native birdlife will return to the RNZYS site on Kawau Island.

Planting Plan

In year one, we planted 5,000 native plants, including specimen trees planted around the edges to give the project an early spark, as well as smaller ground cover species to improve the landscape. We are continuing our progress reclaiming native bush on Kawau Island, are also proposing a nursery that can hold those plants that we do not manage to plant. A nursery is also a good way to propagate plants for ongoing years, grown from seeds naturally collected on the island.

Going forward, we plan to plant around 2,500 plants per year to cover the RNZYS property and the adjacent DOC land. The nursery will be used to source some of these, and some extra plants would also be brought in.

Be Part of our Legacy

There are different ways you can be part of the legacy, including buying a tree for $25, buy a cluster of trees $150, buy a tree with a plaque $500, or simply donate by pledging your own amount.
