The situation in Karposh today

Families

Privatisation, immigration from eastern Macedonia, the elimination of rent control and lack of housing as well as high utilities prices have made housing unaffordable and inaccessible to many, especially younger low-wage or unemployed people as significant saving and higher than average wages are required to afford homes, therefore young people are forced to continue living with parents.

01. The new roof addition is inhabited by one of the only Albanian families in the area, additions relate to their Albanian identity, fairly discrete externally. Have inserted new mezzanine level. Their family is large and in need of space to provide separate accommodation for adult children. 02. Goran and Valentina have lived here for a long time and made the apartment their own. They use the external area as a garden. Their son Dragan used to live with them until he moved into a capsule within the new child form to get his own space, Goran and Valentina have exposed their love of planting within Dragan’s new capsule and within the hearth space between the parent and child forms. 03. An older couple live within this space and don’t require much space and therefore, once their children moved into the new child form to start their own families etc. they converted their terrace into an earthquake resilience base. 04.Marija and her family run a kebab restaurant nearby. Their space is small and her adult children cannot find affordable accommodation, therefore they start to inhabit their allocation in the child form.

05. The ground floor has become a clothing workshop, Apartment residents, led by Ivana started the business in her apartment, the void between the apartment block and child form, the hearth space has been appropriated for drying clothes. Ivana has transferred to living within the child form.

Masts made from Macedonian pine demarcate the allocation zones to allow for light access to the existing apartments as well as redefining the public space to allow for the creation of community ‘hearth’ spaces. Piers establish networks through the stairwells. 1:100
