Chapter 3: Was Shalam Dr. Newbrough’s First Community? Discovering the True Path of Oahspe (2022)
A further common reaction is to yearn to join or build Jehovih’s Kingdom on Earth communities. Perhaps this goes to show that all of us seek to belong to some kind of special, spiritual family-like association. We simply seek to love and to be loved. It follows then
Desiring to become part of Oahspe congregations or social media circles is one of the common reactions of those who have decided that Oahspe is a wonderful revelation. Unfortunately, very few of these have ever evolved to the point where they could be considered connected to the second resurrection heavens.
While John Ballou Newbrough was apparently destined to channel the new age bible of Oahspe as a trance medium, a phenomenal achievement in itself, there remain many questions as to why he so vigorously attempted to found The Father’s Kingdom on Earth, as published in Oahspe. You see, at the time, Newbrough was a famous spiritualist within such circles in New York. He was wealthy from his gold expeditions in California and Australia. The channeling of a heavenly book as deep and universal as Oahspe could have and could still lead to world redemption. So, one question is: did Newbrough actually need to attempt this project?

Nevertheless, few readers of Oahspe take off on a service spree where they work for the good of their fellow mortals, also a major goal of Oahspe. The irony of this is that NO COMMUNITIES can take place WITHOUT a commitment to GOOD WORKS of SERVICE.

On the other hand, Dr. John Newbrough was destined for this Oahspe channeling for several reasons. First, there were angels of light who approached him directly while giving explicit life altering directions for him to fulfill. Secondly, certainly Newbrough was a trance medium, an inherited trait among almost all such psychics. Therefore, his spiritualism was likely part of heavenly design. Additionally, Newbrough faithfully followed his Oahspe preparation

from the heavens, undertaking a decade of purification via a vegetarian diet and a continuing effort to achieve good works of service. And the result was that Newbrough accomplished both the prerequisites and the channeling.
For this reason, O man, I declare unto thee that the Father's Kingdom is now being founded on the earth,
Obviously Newbrough chose to go farther than what his life’s path of destiny necessarily entailed. He had indeed read the Oahspean words of prophecy regarding the establishment of a new age utopia to be established. For it was prophesized that such would take place within the first 200 years of the Kosmon Era, which began in 1848 A.D. Such words were naturally found in Oahspe’s Book of Jehovih’s Kingdom on Earth. While this book has since been proven through authorship software to have NOT been given from the original angels of light (proven instead that Newbrough wrote it himself), many other such textual references can be found throughout Oahspe:
Therefore, on a personal level, he had reached a kind of salvation a high spiritual grade along with a high degree of spiritual knowledge. So, what is it that motivated Dr. Newbrough to take on the lifelong project of creating a utopian society? Hadn’t he done enough?
I would surmise that the current collapse of civilization and democracies is a processor to the very hard times that will lead to individual communities becoming oases of harmony during times of great upheaval. Presently, most of the richest and most powerful companies and political organizations are acting to destroy all prosperity and human rights and the lives of anyone outside their tyrannical circle. All food production, energy creation, and human rights are being stripped away in order kill and enslave. In contradictive response to evil chaos and death, a new order of angelic harmony will arise and thrive, because there will be no other way to survive. We must all unite in service to our Creator and to save all the Children of the Creator or we will perish. That in itself

and the mortal manifestation thereof is near at hand. It shall appear as a spontaneous light, permeating the souls of thousands of people; and they shall come forth, establishing Jehovih in truth and fullness! (Judgment 25:15 16)*6
Each time such utopian references are given throughout Oahspe, just as given above, so too does each reference affirm that these communities will NOT be established through any one great prophet or one community but rather through a simultaneous inspiration of thousands to take on this world redemption path.
His Castaways periodical frequently discussed how to best raise babies. Consider how much his caring came through in the following sentences: Children can be taught to love one another as themselves;

shall be much of the basis for why the new communities of Kosmon shall succeed. Nonetheless, Newbrough’s personal decision was to attempt founding the Father’s Kingdom on Earth in the 1880s, was and is his right. Perhaps he may have erroneously concluded that since the angels of light were with him in the creation of Oahspe, then likely they would be with him in this revolutionary spiritual quest.
Be that as it may, based on Newbrough’s words and actions, we can only conclude he really cared most about saving as many unwanted and abused children around the world as he could. His good works service in New York consisted often of rescuing babies about to be aborted and throw into the Hudson River. These children he would financially support in order to place them in a home of good reputation. A decade later, he would put advertisements in newspapers before and after Shalam concerning taking in unwanted “babes.”
I would estimate Newbrough wrote 100 articles in 9 issues of The Castaway about babies and children. Some titles, to name a few, include:
Clearly, we can perceive that Newbrough deeply cared about the children who were being mistreated or discarded by a cruel society. So, despite any errors, his heart was more than in the right place. Newbrough sincerely wanted to protect, raise and uplift all the children of the world.

And spiritual prophecies aside, our choices, our will, our prayers, our faith always reign supreme. There is no being, no spirit, no demon nor angel who can cancel, change or destroy our path towards fulfilling our dreams. Only we ourselves can stop ourselves from reaching our dreams or drive us onward to successfully fulfilling them.

Concerning whether he, John Newbrough could succeed in establishing The Father’s Kingdom on Earth, I do not think massive challenges in such daunted him in the least. A decade of purification and a year in the transposing of Oahspe could naturally be considered as clear signs that he, John Newbrough, was ready to accomplish great things. And as there were hundreds of such communities being raised throughout the United States during that era of years, at that time, and still more over the next generation, Newbough could also have concluded that such signs proved he was justified in immediately gathering the people and resources to fulfill the prophecy of Jehovih’s Kingdom on Earth.
Nevertheless, if one reads such Oahspe quotes as above, the first thing that one must realize is that these communities would rise without being abandoned, would gather in homeless children for their upliftment, and would have no famous single leader leading the way. Thus, it would seem that Newbrough made a serious misjudgment.
Or he may not even have cared that other groups had, were, or would be coming into existence. As far as Newbrough was concerned, he was the CHOSEN of Jehovih, TAE, one with The All Voice and thus could not fail.
In other cycles, I sent My loo'is to raise up certain mortals, through whom I could reveal My commandments unto others. In Kosmon, behold, I shall not raise up any great leader forth; My light shall fall upon thousands and thousands. Of many varieties of talents shall be My chosen in that day. (Es 2:21)*6
For two years, he was a member of “The Domain,” a Spiritualist colony in Kiantone, New York. Newbrough had been attracted to the group because it advocated for progressive ideas which mirrored his own, including the promotion of race-mixing and the abolition of national government. Alas, the Domain fell apart in the late 1850s. First, a sex scandal involving several prominent members brought them unwanted attention. Then,
In the end, he would have likely been better off sticking to serving the poor exclusively, while making Oahspe more well-known. Were Newbrough’s Shalam efforts motivated to make the world a better place or to enhance his legacy?

It is without question that all such elements were NOT the case with any of the new age communities. Thus, one could easily conclude that NOW was NOT the time for such communal, miraculous undertakings. This may be somewhat of a shock to many, but Shalam was NOT the first community Newbrough was a member of.

I would also speculate that Jehovih’s Kingdom on Earth was falsely presented as being an original book of Oahspe in order to drum up more success for the Shalam community-building. If not by Newbrough himself, then by his masonic spirit entourage that was unfortunately possessing him since some time several months after
While even in those days Newbrough became known as a famous medium and an investigator of fraud mediumship, his stint as a member of an actual utopian society such as The Domain, is basically unknown to the Oahspe reading community. Perhaps the news of this experience was kept secret by Mr. Newbrough in order to NOT draw attention to his participation in a community that failed.
An additional reason would be there would be a greater “calling” for his planned “Shalam” community if the Shalam “project” were:
It is unlikely Newbrough was at fault concerning the sex scandal, and simply left because of the immoral practices. However, Masons are historically rife with sexual abuse cases, so there is no way to fully exonerate Newbrough from The Domain community’s fall from grace. Therefore, Oahspe could and should have been channeled by John Ballou Newbrough without any efforts to establish a new age colony. I conclude this as a better path for Newbrough for several reasons.

First, virtually all the original members were embittered by how badly Shalam was planned and tyrannically run with the actual “spirit” and “core angelic principles” pretty much absent. Furthermore, its members catastrophically lost all of their savings they had signed away in joining this cult. Third, a culture of masonic Saphah cultism
It should be pointed out that the The Domain community failed not only due to self-sufficiency and financial problems (a familiar refrain) but also do to a “free love” scandal that turned ugly and scandalous. Newbrough left as soon this dirty laundry came out in the newspapers of the time. Somehow someone was looking out for John because his part in such, whatever that may have been, never came to the light of day.

Next, however, let us consider exactly how The Book of Jehovih’s Kingdom on Earth aligned with the true spiritual principles of Oahspe or did not!
11 was instituted that would plague the Oahspe social circles to this very day. It is true that the community lasted some 17 years but these were years of poverty, conflict, abandonment, psychological abuse and disillusionment, and complete financial failure. Surely several of the top leaders (especially Andrew Holland) gave it their all and all their monetary backing as well yet in the end, there was an end with no resemblance to the utopian prophesy. This unhappy story will be told as fully as possible in the coming chapters.
