IN THE WAKE POSEIDON

I had been thinking for some time about a way of presenting the brand all together, under one roof, that would convey the original idea of where I started from and how, after 27 years of non-stop activity, we got to where we are today.

In a time when the digital world seems to be the only way to succeed, we decided to print on paper and distribute offline the issue Number Zero, the prototype of what our company magazine RRD WORLD would become. Just as you do for a new board you do something new. First you shape the first prototype by hand and then apply the modifications after it’s been tested in the water. Only then, once the test has been approved, it is designed on a computer. Our paper magazine, from the moment it’s written to the moment it’s printed, symbolizes the distance between our hard working hands and the eyes of all our passionate customers. And I like to believe that touch sets us free, because that’s how it was for me, the first time I took an electric planer in my hands and shaped a Clark Foam blank, or attached buttons to a shirt with a Necchi 447. For me, the matter always wins out over the idea. And so I’m proud of our ‘analogue’ choice to introduce you to new ways of getting on the water. From the people who created this brand, who work with passion and love on this project every day, to the construction technologies, collaborations and athletes who represent us. All presented from the inside, from those who think and act a bit like any of us would do when telling our story.

Like the title of one of my favourite albums by the English band King Crimson, I thought of titling this editorial space of mine ‘In the wake of Poseidon’, in honour of the symbol of his majestic trident that reigns inside the heads of all of us children who have dreamt before its beauty.

Era da tempo che pensavo ad un modo di presentare il brand tutto insieme, sotto un unico tetto, che rendesse l’idea originale da cui sono partito e del come dopo 27 anni di attività non-stop siamo arrivati qui.

Nel momento in cui il digitale sembra essere l’unico modo con cui si ottengono dati (misurabili) in comunicazione, abbiamo deciso di stampare su carta e di distribuire offline il numero zero, il prototipo, di quello che diventerà il nostro magazine aziendale RRD WORLD.

Così come si fa con una tavola per una nuova disciplina, una roba nuova. Prima si modella a mano il primo prototipo e poi si applicano le modifiche dopo il test in mare. Dopo di che si disegna al computer, ma solo dopo averla provata e capito che la direzione è quella giusta. Così la carta e l’inchiostro di stampa misurano la distanza che c’è tra le nostre mani e gli occhi di tutti i nostri appassionati clienti. E mi piace credere che il tatto ci renda liberi, perché così è stato la prima volta che ho preso una pialla elettrica in mano ed ho modellato un pane di Clark Foam, oppure ho attaccato i bottoni ad una camicia con una Necchi 447. La materia per me vince sempre sull’idea e quindi mi gongolo su questo tipo di scelta “analogica” per presentarvi nuovi modi di andare in acqua, le persone che hanno creato questo brand e che ogni giorno lavorano con passione e amore a questo progetto. Tecnologie di costruzione, collaborazioni, atleti e testimonials che ci rappresentano. Il tutto presentato dall’interno, da chi le cose le pensa e le fa, un pò come accadrebbe ad ognuno di noi raccontando la sua storia.

Così come il titolo di un album di una band inglese a cui tengo molto, i King Crimson, ho pensato di titolare questo mio spazio editoriale “Sulla scia di Poseidone”, in onore al simbolo del suo maestoso tridente che regna dentro alla testa di tutti noi bambini che abbiamo sognato davanti alla sua bellezza.

It is the circular movement that gives the sense of time passing through the return to the origins, just when we feel we have come a long way.

‘Everything flows’ yet ‘everything returns’: in the water this is very clear.

Just the fact that we float, already as children, makes us feel capable of defeating gravity, a fleeting supernatural power that some are able to turn into poetic movements full of energy and grace, like dancers suspended on a transparent blue stage. Then suddenly we return to the earthly dimension, where our every movement is again conditioned by gravity, but without the primordial embrace of the molecule that remembers everything and becomes everything.

Thus, far from Poseidon’s wake, we feel more mortal. And it is precisely this that makes us remember that every time we get closer to that wake, life changes, reigniting the hope in us that we will remain dancers forever.

È il movimento circolare a dare il senso dello scorrere del tempo attraverso il ritorno alle origini, proprio nel momento in cui ci sentiamo di aver percorso un lungo cammino.

“Tutto scorre” ma “tutto ritorna”: in acqua tutto questo è molto chiaro. Solo il fatto di galleggiare, sin da bambini, ci fa sentire capaci di sconfiggere la gravità, quasi una sensazione di temporaneo potere soprannaturale che alcuni poi riescono a declinare in gesti poetici, ricchi di energia e grazia, come ballerini sospesi su un palcoscenico blu trasparente.

Poi improvvisamente si ritorna alla dimensione terrena, dove ogni nostro movimento è di nuovo condizionato dalla gravità, senza però l’abbraccio primordiale della molecola che tutto ricorda e che tutto diventa. Così, lontani dalla scia di Poseidone ci sentiamo più mortali. Ed è proprio questo che ci fa ricordare che ogni volta che ci riavviciniamo a quella scia la vita cambia e si riaccende in noi la speranza di rimanere ballerini per sempre.

Giorgio Parisi

Nobel prize in physics 2021, it undoubtedly has merit. Having found order in a world where it seemed it could not exist, facilitating the way for us to understand complex phenomena governed by chaos, of all those physical systems characterized by “randomness” and “disorder”.

It is a complex physics problem to be able to arrive at mathematical formulations that describe the propagation of water in a paper towel. Or understand how sand dunes or waves behave. Or again, the financial markets and the neural connections of our brain. These are all problems that, more or less, occupy part of our daily life.

Complex systems

There is a correlation between the study of complex systems and research on climate and climate change and the creation of a magazine like the one you are reading right now.

Everything starts from Chaos! Ideas, projects, words, images, sensations, thoughts, confusion. Chaos.

But slowly we begin to structure the ideas, to focus the images to change and reciprocate the words, fluid and emotional texts begin to emerge. The feelings that used to be of discomfort and agitation begin to take shape and become inspirational waves to surf with your colleagues. Little by little it all begins to flow in the right direction, something that at first you would never have given for granted. What at first looked like just a scribble on a sheet of paper, day after day becomes a letter, more letters and then a logo. And so the pages also begin to come to life, one after the other create a flow that seems chaotic but is not.

As Giorgio Parisi taught us, “mental” chaos is only the starting point for a project or a journey, in continuous evolution and change.

Premio Nobel per la fisica 2021, ha senza dubbio un merito. Aver trovato l’ordine in un mondo dove sembrava non potesse esistere, facilitandoci la strada per la comprensione di fenomeni complessi governati dal caos, di tutti quei sistemi fisici caratterizzati da casualità e disordine. È un problema di fisica complessa riuscire ad arrivare a formulazioni matematiche che descrivano la propagazione dell’acqua in uno scottex o capire come si comportano le dune di sabbia o le onde. O ancora, i mercati finanziari e le connessioni neurali del nostro cervello. Sono tutti problemi che, più o meno, occupano parte della nostra vita quotidiana.

Sistemi complessi

Esiste una correlazione tra lo studio dei sistemi complessi e le ricerche sul ambiente e il cambiamento climatico e la creazione di un magazine come quello che state leggendo in questo momento.

Tutto parte dal Caos!

Idee, progetti, parole, immagini, sensazioni, pensieri, confusione. Il Caos.

Ma pian piano si iniziano a strutturare le idee, a mettere a fuoco le immagini a cambiare e ricambiare le parole, iniziano ad uscire dei testi fluidi ed emozionali. Le sensazioni che prima erano di sconforto e agitazione, iniziano a prendere forma e diventare delle onde di ispirazione da surfare con i tuoi colleghi. Poco per volta inizia a prendere tutto la giusta direzione, quella direzione che all’inizio non avresti mai dato per certa.

Quello che all’inizio sembrava solo uno scarabocchio su un foglio, giorno dopo giorno diventa una lettera, più lettere e poi un logo. E così anche le pagine inziano a prende vita, una dopo l’altra si crea un flusso che sembra caotico ma non lo è.

Come ci ha insegnato Giorgio Parisi, il caos “mentale” è solo il punto di partenza per un progetto in continua evoluzione e cambiamento.

It’s our imagination that allows us to continue to experience the lingering euphoria of having flown over the water. Dynamism takes over everything and the unison of movement of the body combined with that of the ocean makes us fly and with this efficiency of movement one can ride even further.

Ze mousse (the foam, the wave) that breaking wave that gives us that initial push, and allows us to rise with our hydrofoil and then fly above sea level.

La nostra immaginazione ci riporta a pensare a quell’incredibile sensazione di aver volato sull’acqua. Il dinamismo prende il sopravvento e il movimento del corpo unito a quello del mare all’unisono ci fa stare sospesi e percorrere distanze mai pensate prima.

Ze mousse (la schiuma, l’onda) che frangendo ci da quella spinta iniziale e ci permette di sollevarci con il nostro hydrofoil e poi volare sopra il livello del mare.

Foiling dynamism, sport and way of living.

The charm of efficiency of the hydrofoil, one creates smooth motion with simple movements using different forces the wind, waves, sea currents or even our physical motion by pumping. These are all elements that put us in contact with nature and for this we become addicted to it.

“What drives us to go out is to ride the ocean and foiling is one more reason to be there. It’s one more motivation to enjoy the water, another way to ride and different from the classic way of riding. The board is not touching the water anymore, it feels like flying above the water”.

The hydrofoil connects the body to the ocean.

The hydrofoil becomes your connection with the ocean. Without the foil you would not be able to fly. We are used to having feet on the ground and flying above the water becomes exceptional, something we thrive for. It is the feeling of levitating over water and the hydrofoil is our tool to make it possible.

“We are quite at the beginning of foiling. In the future the hydrofoil will allow us to ride even faster and easier and push the limits even further”.

Foiling has united us, where are we up to now.

Foiling has opened a new dimension. It has created a new trend. It does not create distinctions but unites those who practice sailing, kitesurfing, windsurfing, surfing, wing surfing or sup. The charm is that once you add the hydrofoil to your quiver then everyone speaks the same language and you have endless opportunities to be on the water. The windless world has opened up and joined the wind world, the current of the rivers are open oceans.

“We made big improvements on materials and the shapes of the hydrofoil in just few years of development. With more years to come our knowledge will level up and we will certainly discover new areas of work to make this watersport even more exciting”.

Dinamismo del foil, sport e modo di vivere.

Navighiamo, o meglio, voliamo sfruttando semplici elementi come il vento, le onde, le correnti, oppure in assenza di questi, utilizziamo il solo movimento del nostro corpo per rimanere elevati sull’hydrofoil e spostarci velocemente, in gergo “pumping”. Siamo in pieno contatto con la natura e completamente connessi con essa.

“Il foiling è una motivazione in più per uscire in mare, ma è anche un modo diverso di farlo. La tavola non sfiora più l’acqua, ma rimane sollevata ed è tanto silenzioso, quanto piacevole”.

L’hydrofoil è lo strumento che ci tiene in contatto con l’acqua e che ci permette di volare sopra di essa. Essendo abituati ad avere i piedi piantati per terra, trovarsi sospesi sopra l’acqua diventa un’esperienza eccezionale e coinvolgente al punto da diventare una vera e propria dipendenza.

“Siamo solo all’inizio di questo viaggio. In futuro siamo sicuri che il foiling ci permetterà di navigare più velocemente e più facilmente e di spingerci oltre i nostri limiti”.

Il foiling ci ha unito ed ora la strada è tracciata.

Il foiling ha lanciato una nuova tendenza. Non crea distinzioni, ma unisce chi pratica la vela, il kitesurf, il windsurf, il surf. Una volta connesso il foil allo scafo, tutti parliamo la stessa lingua e si moltiplicano le opportunità di stare in mare con o senza vento. Persino le correnti dei fiumi diventano spazi utili per volare come se fossimo in oceano aperto.

“In solo pochi anni di sviluppo, abbiamo apportato sostanziali miglioramenti ai materiali ed al design dell’hydrofoil. Con gli anni a venire le nostre conoscenze aumenteranno e scopriremo nuovi modi per rendere questo sport ancora più emozionante”.

The dream remains a dream until it becomes our reality. The Hawaiian myth, the dream of riding the monstrous waves and feeling those thrills, the dream images collide with the life in our home spot where that paradise has other colors, where the waves are not as big, the current is a little less strong and the wind is a simple breeze. But at this point we can get back in touch with our favorite element and make it ours: our home spot (wherever it is) can become our Hawaii. The journey remains our greatest discovery but our home now becomes a beautiful reality for watersports.

“Foiling is giving us more reasons to love watersports as it’s a new dimension to classic surfing. Also allowing us to discover new spots and live more in the water as we can enjoy different conditions. First of all , we can go in the water every day, which would not have been possible before the birth of hydrfoiling .”

Il sogno rimane un sogno finché non diventa la nostra realtà. Il mito hawaiano, il sogno di cavalcare onde mostruose e provare quei brividi, le immagini oniriche si scontrano con la vita reale nel nostro luogo natale dove quel paradiso ha altri colori, dove le onde non sono così grandi, la corrente è un pò meno forte e il vento è magari una semplice brezza. Ma il foiling sta aprendo a nuove opportunità per tornare a vivere il mare quotidianamente ed in modo dinamico. Il nostro “home spot” (ovunque sia) può diventare le nostre Hawaii. Il viaggio resta la nostra più grande scoperta, ma casa nostra adesso diventa una bellissima realtà per gli sport d’acqua.

“Il foiling ci sta dando più motivi per amare gli sport acquatici in quanto ci ha aperto ad una nuova dimensione. Ci ha permesso di scoprire nuovi spot e passare più tempo in acqua poiché possiamo godere di condizioni diverse e mai esplorate prima. Per prima cosa possiamo andare in acqua ogni giorno, cosa che prima dell’hydrofoil non sarebbe stato possibile”.

“The sunset is when we enjoy it more. We love seeing the sun going down and the sky becoming more and more pink or gold. It’s an amazing show. You know you are enjoying the last ride of the day before heading back in. Foiling the very last wave, using the very last gust, enjoying the very last second of light before it’s dark”.

How many meters of fabric does creativity need to make a garment of success? Roberto Bardini, creative director and CEO of RRD Clothing, knows the answer. And he leaves nothing to chance. With a mathematical mind, nothing goes unmissed, logging every detail, the ins and outs his data knows no errors. Because for him creativity without scrutiny is merely an aesthetic exercise. He loves to be concrete and his office only has the bare essentials: “You only need a few things in order to achieve great results”

Quanti metri di tessuto servono alla creatività per realizzare un capo di successo? Roberto Bardini, direttore creativo e CEO di RRD Clothing, lo sa perfettamente. Non lascia niente al caso, mente matematica, ha l’abitudine di inserire ogni dato riguardante le sue collezioni, all’interno di tabelle che non conoscono errore. Perché per lui la creatività senza il controllo è un mero esercizio estetico. Ama essere concreto e nel suo ufficio non c’è spazio per ciò che non serve: “Bastano poche cose in ordine per raggiungere grandi risultati”

Less is more, especially when it comes to design, minimally inclined, Bardini is passionate about simplicity rather than the extravagant as well as classical music which he listens to in his car with the windows closed:

“I like to see the world go by without noise. It gives me the sense of a privileged observatory from which I can anticipate the needs of others. As if time is suspended between myself and everything outside”.

Ha un gusto minimal, soprattutto quando si parla di design, appassionato di arredamento che non contempla il superfluo e di musica classica che ascolta in macchina con i finestrini chiusi:

“Mi piace vedere il mondo che scorre senza rumori. Così ho la sensazione di avere un personale osservatorio privilegiato da cui posso intercettare i bisogni altrui. Come in un tempo sospeso tra me e tutto quello che sta fuori”.

How would you define yourself?

“Very rational, and like chefs I always need a clean kitchen before preparing a gourmet dish. It is a trait which spills into my family life, much to the disappointment of my children (laughs). My collections are ordered and schematic. There are no drawings or sketches. I am not a stylist, but a designer and that is why I love to put everything in its place. I know exactly what RRD is and what type of product is right for us”.

Come si definirebbe?

“Molto razionale e come gli chef, ho bisogno della cucina sempre pulita prima di preparare un piatto gourmet. Una mania che porto anche in famiglia con disappunto dei miei figli (ride). Le mie collezioni sono ordinate, schematiche, senza disegni o bozzetti. Io non sono uno stilista, piuttosto un designer ed è per questo che amo mettere tutto al suo posto. So esattamente cos’è RRD e che tipo di prodotto è giusto per noi”.

Great supporter of experimentation. What weight does it have in your work?

“I don’t let myself be drawn into the logic of the market, especially in research: no to fabrics that are found on the market and no to prepackaged products. Our latest challenge is the SURFLEX® yarn 100% recycled from post consumer scraps that are recovered and regenerated without affecting sources of non-renewable energy. It is compact, soft, breathable, resistant to washing, dries quickly, and wrinkle-free. A techno-fabric that can also be used for elegant garments, from outerwear to trousers, from shirts to dresses”.

What is your professional goal?

“Changing the way people dress. And to do this I set myself limits: eliminate the traditional use of thread for seams, remove any excess fabric and use only stretch yarns. All this requires me to find innovative solutions, invisible to the naked eye but fundamental for this radical change. It’s a difficult path to take as it requires a lot of research, extended timing with only a few laboratories available, but it is also the most fun. We do not make clothes but design objects. I take care of the inside of the garments as well as the outside, form and substance must coexist and have the same value”.

Qual’è la sua meta professionale?

“Cambiare il modo di vestire delle persone. E per fare questo mi pongo dei limiti: eliminare il filo tradizionale per le cuciture, togliere il tessuto in eccesso, utilizzare solo filati stretch. Tutto questo mi impone di trovare ogni volta soluzioni innovative, invisibili agli occhi di tanti ma fondamentali per questo processo di cambiamento radicale. Questa via è la più difficile perché impone tanta ricerca, tempistiche dilatate e pochi laboratori disponibili, ma è anche la più divertente. Noi non facciamo abbigliamento ma oggetti di design. Curo l’interno dei capi come l’esterno, forma e sostanza devono convivere e avere lo stesso valore”.

What does the future hold?

“I once imagined being a professor, like my father. Today I think of tomorrow as an opportunity to develop RRD: I would like it to be a company recognized as an example of innovation around initiatives related to culture. A dream that I have with my wife Barbara is the realization of a literary prize. A passion that unites us, one of books that has led the company to publish, for each collection, over 40 thousand copies with titles by great authors who have the sea as inspiration which we give to our customers at the time of purchase for each of our garments. I consider it a small gift of eternity for all those who choose us”.

Grande sostenitore della sperimentazione. Che peso ha nel suo lavoro?

“Non mi faccio tirare dentro dalle logiche del mercato, soprattutto nella ricerca: no ai tessuti che si trovano in commercio, no ai prodotti preconfezionati. La nostra ultima sfida è SURFLEX® il filato 100% riciclato da sfridi post consumer che vengono recuperati e rigenerati senza intaccare fonti di energia non rinnovabili. È compatto, morbido, traspirante, resistente ai lavaggi, si asciuga velocemente, è antipiega. Un tecno-tessuto in grado di essere utilizzato anche per capi eleganti, dal capo spalla ai pantaloni, dalle camicie agli abiti”.

Se guarda al futuro?

“Una volta mi immaginavo professore, come mio padre. Oggi penso a domani come un’occasione di sviluppo per RRD: vorrei che fosse un’azienda riconosciuta come esempio d’innovazione intorno alla quale ruotano una serie di iniziative legate alla cultura. Un sogno che coltivo insieme a Barbara mia moglie, è la realizzazione di un premio letterario. Una passione che ci accomuna, quella dei libri e che ha portato l’azienda ad editare, in occasione di ogni collezione, oltre 40 mila copie con titoli di grandi autori che hanno il mare come ispirazione e che regaliamo ai nostri clienti al momento dell’acquisto di ogni nostro capo. Lo considero un piccolo dono di eternità per tutti quelli che ci scelgono”.

“Yes, I like to give things the right value. When I think of a book to be edited, my attention immediately goes to the cover, the format, the illustrations and the type of paper. I’m also like this when it comes to the packaging of RRD products as I believe that the wrapping is an integral part of the products. The packaging used to present each garment is the result of a creative journey with lots of thought having gone into it from the choice of colors, to the proportions and the images”.

Progettare dunque è una sua dote?

“Si mi piace dare il giusto valore alle cose. Quando penso a un libro da editare la mia attenzione va immediatamente alla copertina, al formato, alle illustrazioni, al tipo di carta. Mi comporto così anche con il packaging dei prodotti RRD perché credo che l’involucro sia parte integrante dei capi prodotti. La confezione con cui presentiamo ogni capo è il frutto di un percorso creativo pensato, misurato che implica la scelta di colori, proporzioni, immagini”.

What’s your favourite RRD item?

“It all started with Winter Storm, so that’s my favourite. It was 2013, at that time no one coupled different fabrics in the world of clothing, examples of this technique only existed for technical products such as car seats and the interiors of helmets for motorcycles. We combined a breathable membrane and a layer of fleece with Lycra.

I immediately had the feeling that the garment was going to be unique and I wasn’t wrong.

I feel I’m able to anticipate people’s tastes and what will be appreciated by the market”.

Il capo RRD più amato?

“Tutto è nato dal Winter Storm, quindi è lui il mio preferito. Era il 2013, in quel periodo nessuno accoppiava tessuti differenti nel mondo dell’abbigliamento, esempi di questa tecnica esistevano solo per prodotti tecnici come sedili delle auto e gli interni dei caschi per le moto. In quel caso noi abbiamo unito alla Lycra una membrana traspirante e uno strato di pile. Ho subito avuto la sensazione che quel capo sarebbe stato unico e non sbagliavo. Mi attribuisco la capacità di intercettare i gusti delle persone e cosa verrà apprezzato dal mercato”.

Da dove trae la sua energia?

“Dalla mia famiglia. Sono un abitudinario e ogni attimo libero amo passarlo con i miei tre figli e mia moglie. Abbiamo un rapporto molto intenso. Il nostro segreto? Gli abbracci”.

LAND LOVERS & WAVE LOVERS CONNECTION

The Defender RRD Windseeker project was born out of a desire to unite the classicism and unstoppable capabilities of a timeless icon such as Land Rover and RRD, specialized in water sports and clothing. For this project we took inspiration from the Beaufort scale, a universal chart that every sailor and sea enthusiast knows and can properly read.

Beaufort scale

British Admiral Francis Beaufort (1774-1857) is credited with perfecting in 1805 a scale containing relatively precise criteria for quantifying wind at sea, and thus enabling the circulation of sufficiently reliable and universally understood information on sailing conditions, based on the earlier theories of Alexander Dalrymple. This rating system has international validity and has been in effect since January 1, 1949.

The sea state value given in the table, should only be interpreted as indicative, being represented the wave height conditions that can be expected to be faced in the open sea, a great distance from the coastline.

Although wind speed can be measured with good accuracy by means of an anemometer, which expresses a value in knots or kilometers per hour, a sailor should know how to estimate this speed already by mere observation of the effects of the wind on the environment.

Il progetto congiunto Defender RRD Windseeker nasce dal desiderio di unire la classicità e le capacità inarrestabili di un’icona senza tempo quale è Land Rover e RRD specializzato in sport acquatici e abbigliamento. Per il progetto abbiamo preso ispirazione dalla scala Beaufort, tabella universale che ogni marinaio e appassionato di mare conosce e sa interpretare sapientemente.

La scala Beaufort

Il merito di avere perfezionato nel 1805 una scala contenente criteri relativamente precisi, per quantificare il vento in mare, e permettere in tal modo la diffusione di informazioni sufficientemente affidabili e universalmente comprese sulle condizioni di navigazione, si deve all’ammiraglio britannico Francis Beaufort (1774-1857) sulla base delle precedenti teorie di Alexander Dalrymple. Questo sistema di valutazione ha validità internazionale ed entra in vigore dal 1° gennaio 1949.

Il valore dello stato del mare riportato in tabella, deve essere interpretato solo come indicativo, venendo rappresentate le condizioni di altezza delle onde che ci si può aspettare di incontrare in mare aperto a grande distanza dalle coste.

Anche se la velocità del vento può essere misurata con buona precisione mediante un anemometro, che esprime un valore in nodi o in chilometri orari, un marinaio dovrebbe saper stimare questa velocità già con la sola osservazione degli effetti del vento sull’ambiente.

The project

The car was designed in collaboration with the Land Rover team in Italy with the idea of creating a car full of accessories that would make it right for wind and ocean related sports. The chosen model of the New Defender is the 110 with a 3-liter diesel/ hybrid soft engine: what makes the difference are the details to help create a true cult car: the roof, made of wind and water repellent fabric, can be fully opened to allow passengers to climb into a lookout position in search of the right wind and wave conditions. Inside, a portable shower is set up in the rear of the car to wash salt water off the equipment, while a storage box is mounted on the outside to host wetsuits after a day on the water. The Defender Windseeker comes with many accessories including a compressor, perfect for inflating boards, kites or wings. RRD also designed the exterior graphics: a map of the Mediterranean sea is drawn showing isobars marking the most frequent winds in the area. On the left side of the car is a Beaufort Scale that allows one to interpret the different intensity of winds in relation to the size of the waves that can be generated. The car, made its world premiere on August 17, 2021 at the Porto Cervo Yacht Club and Costa Smeralda Waterfront in Sardinia.

L’auto è stata progettata in collaborazione con il team Land Rover in Italia con l’idea di creare un’auto ricca di accessori che la rendano perfetta per gli sport legati al vento e all’oceano. Il modello scelto della Nuova Defender è il 110 con motore 3 litri diesel/ibrido soft: a fare la differenza sono i dettagli che contribuiscono a farne una vera e propria vettura cult: il tetto, realizzato in tessuto antivento e idrorepellente, può essere completamente aperto per consentire ai passeggeri di salire in posizione di vedetta alla ricerca delle giuste condizioni di vento e onde. All’interno, nella parte posteriore dell’auto, è stata predisposta una doccia portatile per lavare l’acqua salata dalla carrozzeria o dalle attrezzature, mentre all’esterno è stato montato un box portaoggetti per ospitare le mute dopo una giornata in acqua.

Il Defender Windseeker è dotato di molti accessori tra cui un compressore, perfetto per gonfiare tavole, aquiloni o ali.

RRD ha realizzato anche la grafica esterna: viene disegnata una mappa del Mediterraneo che mostra le isobare che segnano i venti più frequenti nella zona. Sul lato sinistro dell’auto si trova una Scala Beaufort che permette di valutare la diversa intensità dei venti in relazione alla grandezza delle onde che si possono generare. L’auto, è stata presentata in anteprima mondiale il 17 Agosto 2021 al Porto Cervo Yacht Club e al Costa Smeralda Waterfront in Sardegna.

Innovation and constant research from the world of water sports has enabled us to create trousers with high technological value and continuous evolution. They are unique products capable of combining experience and innovation. The sportive heritage of the company (famous for its production of wetsuits and water sports equipment) is based on combining the study of materials, with the functionality of finished products. Not an aesthetic exercise per se, but rather a search for performance mixed with a design that promotes essential shapes and finishes. By not adding to the trousers, we leave out details that aren’t necessary for them to function. We thus succeed in combining technique with ‘timeless’ aesthetic, where ‘simplicity is the ultimate sophistication’.

Riusciamo così a unire tecnica ad estetica “senza tempo” dove “la semplicità è la suprema sofisticazione”.

First of all, the construction of the garment. The fabric, after being laser cut, is glued and heat-taped to form a real self-supporting shell, compact without stitching. This new cutting and assembling technique, which is carried out both by ultrasound and laser cutting machines, is welded/heat glued and taped to guarantee the garment greater resistance to the stresses of use, while creating an excellent barrier against atmospheric agents. In addition, this assembling method allows for material continuity: the fabric is as if it had no interruptions, a unique piece with every part capable of reacting in the same way the others.

Innanzi tutto la costruzione del capo: il tessuto, dopo essere tagliato al laser, viene incollato e termo nastrato formando un vero e proprio guscio autoportante, compatto e senza impunture. Questa nuova tecnica di taglio e assemblaggio che avviene sia con ultrasuoni che con incollaggio e nastrature a caldo (laser cut, welded/heat glued and taped) garantisce al capo maggiore resistenza allo stress da utilizzo ma anche un’ottima barriera per contrastare gli agenti atmosferici. In più, questa metodologia di assemblaggio, consente una continuità materica: il tessuto risulta come non avesse interruzioni, un pezzo unico capace di reagire nello stesso modo in ogni sua parte.

What is Taping?

Again, with a vision of creating structural continuity, the stitchless, taping technique was born, which is applied to the inside of garments. The taping works as a real self supporting structure, capable of uniting the different parts of the garment. It is achieved by hand using special machinery that brings the two fabric panels together and then joins them as if they were a single piece.

Cos’è il Taping?

Sempre nell’ottica di creare continuità strutturale, nasce la tecnica dello Stitchless/Taping (senza cuciture/ nastrato) che si applica nella parte interna dei capi. Consiste in una nastratura che funziona come una vera e propria struttura autoportante capace di unire le diverse parti del capo. Si ottiene con una lavorazione realizzata a mano grazie a speciali macchinari in grado di avvicinare i due lembi di tessuto e poi unirli come fossero un pezzo unico.

We have chosen to eliminate as much superfluous fabric as possible by cutting the individual parts of the garment to the raw edge. The new frontier calls for producing hyper-light garments with maximum performance and comfort. To achieve this goal, each part of the trousers is cut using innovative laser techniques that allow the composition of the fabric to remain intact, while creating clean cuts that can then be assembled using non-invasive methods, such as gluing and taping. The load bearing structure of the fabric is not altered in the slightest, and welding and taping further reinforce the fabric itself.

Abbiamo scelto di eliminare più possibile il tessuto superfluo tagliando ogni parte che compone il singolo capo al vivo. Perché la nuova frontiera in fatto di prestazione tecnica è avere capi iper leggeri con il massimo delle prestazioni e del comfort.

Per raggiungere questo obiettivo, ogni parte di questo capo è tagliata con tecniche innovative al laser che consentono di mantenere integra la composizione del tessuto e di praticare tagli netti in grado di essere poi assemblati con metodi non invasivi come l’incollaggio e la nastratura.

Così la struttura portante del tessuto non viene minimamente modificata e le saldature o l’incollaggio e la nastratura rinforzano ulteriormente il tessuto stesso.

Punto di rilievo è anche l’estrema leggerezza. Come si riesce ad ottenerla?

The fabrics used are super stretchy thanks to the use of an exclusive, latest generation Lycra, named SURFLEX® is subject to anti-bacterial treatments beforehand. It is fast drying, with no need to be ironed. These are all characteristics offered on a wide range of models and pigmented colours, capable of satisfying even the most demanding customers, thanks to new proposals for each collection.
