Berastagi, North Sumatera Public Plaza and Retail 2016 Junior Architect Boy Sembiring + Taufik Mustafa Proposal

Pasar Buah Berastagi and Taman Mejuah-juah are well-known traditional market and public space in Berastagi City. Pasar Buah Berastagi and Taman Mejuah-juah has become one of the main destinations for tourists travelling to Berastagi. Pasar Buah Berastagi sells local fruits, flowers, seeds, while Taman Mejuahjuah provides green space and good view to entire Brastagi city. Pasar Buah Berastagi and Taman Mejuah-juah have different issues. The problems of Pasar Buah Berastagi are the cleanliness of market, the capacity of the seller, and also the needs of market expansion by adding modern-retail. Taman Mejuah-juah problems are poorly maintained and lack of future planning which affect to the number of visitors. The main concept of Smart Traveler Plaza is to integrate Pasar Buah Berastagi and Taman Mejuah-juah as an International Standard Commercial-Recreation Hub for Brastagi in 2030. The market will be enlarged to urban scale. The use tents (as representation of traditional market tents) as a main form of the market and will be directly connected to Taman Mejuah-juah.

Berastagi, North Sumetera Hotel 2016 Junior Architect Boy Sembiring, IAI Proposal

This hotel project is a respond to increasing number of hotel visitors over the years in conjunction with the Growth of Berastagi tourism. The issue of this project is the very limited area to establish new buildings. The main concept of this hotel is to use extreme contour as the new building plot. The existing contour measures about 75 degree. The form of the hotel will be placed vertically (parallel with the contour) and the upper floor will be stretched to the upper ground. The contour will be developed as terraces and faces the room corridor. The Building will be covered by vertical wood louvre as the facade to reduce direct light and will be formed accordingly toward the existing contour. Upper Floor will be used as Receptionist Area, Restaurant, and Service while the three other floors will be used as hotel rooms.

Padangsidimpuan, North Sumatera Educational Office 2016 Junior Architect Boy Sembiring Proposal

This project brief is to make a new Icon of IAIN Padangsidimpuan - North Sumatera, which is still in development phase (both the development of human resources and facilities). The New Rectorate Building will be the next Icon of this Institution. The main concepts are Modern, Islamic, and Local Identity and the building mass concept is from Bataknese Philosophy, “Dalihan Natolu , a traditional stove by using of three stones to hold the cooking pot. Dalihan Natolu is interpreted as a strong togetherness in Bataknese Life (most people in Padangsidimpuan). Therefore, the University officials should have an attitude of togetherness toward each other to develop the institution as well as the students. This is illustrated by the three Rectorate Buildings (as 3 stones), and the open space in the center is represented as the students (as fire). The Building Envelope consist of islamic-pattern roster.

The Rectorate office consists of three mass and open space at the center of the mass configuration. The mass represents stones and the open space and students represents a fire

Kabanjahe, Berastagi Office 2016 Junior Architect Boy Sembiring, IAI Proposal

Moderamen GBKP is the Head Office of Gereja Batak Karo Protestan, the main function of Moderamen GBKP is to manage liturgies for all GBKP churches. This office has been used for quite a long time. The issue of this project is the space is the limited for future development. The needs of the expansion and renovation of the office is a top priority of GBKP management because of the ever-growing/expanding church and the congregations. The main concept of this project is the application of philosophical values of Karonese Philosophy and the Trinity of Christianity which are represented in the form of a triangular diagram. Triangular form symbolizes strength, integrity, and stable. Triangle is also an element that is very attached to the Karonese people. This building has three anatomic parts like building legs, body and head that represents the anatomy of the original Karonese traditional house.

Churches in North Sumatra in general has a uniform appearance, in this project we try to make the church unique from other churches in North Sumatra. First, we identify local materials such as mountain stones, bamboo, and wood which is really close to the site and can be used as building material. Next, we identify Karonese Tradisional House called Siwaluh Jabu which is transformed into new form for this Church while the anatomy of Siwaluh Jabu (Legs-BodyHead) is still adopted.

Medan, North Sumatera Private House 2015 Junior Architect Boy Sembiring, IAI Proposal

The request of this project is to create boarding house and private house in one site, but not in the same building. The challenge is the size of site (16x30m) and the division of the two site (each site is 8x30) will be small for each building. Hence, both the private house and the boarding house should be compact (not rigid mass) but still have an open space for air and light circulation in the building. The facade of these buildings are facing west, so the opening of these facades must be minimal. The style of the facade is modern minimalist and expected to be similar to each other, but different in the details

Medan, North Sumatera Housing 2014 Principal Architect Robert Simbolon Unbuilt

This is a residential project that tries to use different approach in regards to how housing developers only seek maximum profits without thinking about the aesthetic aspect of the house. In this project distinct appearance of housing is made with economic materials by applying modern-unfinished style. This Unfinished facade elements incorporate raw materials such as exposed brick and textured cement. Regardless of the limited space of each house, open space, cross ventilation and stack ventilation is applied inside the house unit as passive cooling.

Sei Bagerpang, Medan Boarding House 2016 Junior Architect Boy Sembiring, IAI Proposal

Bagerpang Boarding House is a house renovation project with new mass as a boarding house behind the existing house. The project brief is to make a low budget house renovation and low budget boarding house. We respond those issues by using unfinished materials, such as exposed concrete, textured cement, wood, and natural stone. Application of good air circulation like cross ventilation and stack ventilation is present in the building. In the center of the site, a green garden is set to let air and light flows into the boarding house.

This project is located in Kabanjahe, North Sumatera. This project does not have a specific brief, requiring only a safe, and comfortable house. We tried to design a residential as simple as possible without excessive intervention - a residential with many openings but still creates a warm expression both inside and outside of the building since Kabanjahe temperatures is quite low. For the expression of the house, unfinised materials are used, such as exposed concrete, textured cement, roster brick, natural stones, wood, and gravel to create warm expression.

DELI RIVER SMART HOUSING LOCATION PROJECT TYPE YEAR CONTRIBUTION PRINCIPAL ARCHITECT STATUS COMPETITION COMMITTEE

Deli River, Medan, North Sumatera Competition, Housing 2014 Principal (Individual Competition) Robert Simbolon First Winner Nippon Paint Young Designer Award 2014

In this competition brief, the theme is to create a future living in 2030 Deli river is a historical river which divide Medan City into two part. Previously, Deli river is used for water transportation such as wood boat for trade, transportation, and for water festival occasionally. Therefor, deli river was a big part of Medan City’s History. Today, Deli River is deteriorating, it is dirty and full of garbage, litters, and house waste.

On this project, I focus on slum housing near Deli River where a lot of problems occurs. It is unimaginable how the condition will be in 2030, therefore we need a fundamental idea of how they will live in 2030, and what can we give as a young architect for their future housing environment.

The concept is to create vertical housing utilizing unused material such as Container box as house module. This housing uses solar panels, Rainwater harvest, aquaponic, biodigesters, and other self-generated energy that can be used by local communities who lives in this housing.

On the riverside will be established as terracing to be used as a place for urban farming, aquaponic, and pool filters from the city sewers (riol). This area will be managed independently of local communities.

JABU NI SIOSAR - SAYEMBARA PUPR JAWA BARAT LOCATION | Siosar, Karo, North Sumatera PROJECT TYPE | House Project - Competition YEAR | 2016 CONTRIBUTION | Leader (Team Competition) PRINCIPAL ARCHITECT | Robert Simbolon STATUS | 2nd Winner COMPETITION COMMITTEE | Kementerian PUPR

In this competition brief, we were asked to create an affordable house with local value for the underprivileged. In this project, we want to redesign the house unit in relocation settlement - Siosar. Siosar was a relocation village for Victim of Mt. Sinabung eruption. The reason we focus on the house unit, because the existing new house typology is inappropriate from the behavior of local people who lived near Mount Sinabung. The new house in Siosar will apply minimalist style and the House will be on stilts. The relocation settlement has not been completed after 4 years, which makes this as the most important issue of this project. To respond this issue, we design a house unit to be economic, easy and fast to build. The concept is to create stilt houses by using a local material, such as coconut wood, brick, thatch, bamboo, river stone, etc. This house is divided into several modules. These modules can be done earlier by the workers and communities which will then be assembled with other parts of the house.

revitalization of Chinatown neighborhood - belawan LOCATION | Medan Mareland, North Sumatera PROJECT TYPE | Masterplan YEAR | 2016 CONTRIBUTION | Principal Architect PRINCIPAL ARCHITECT | Robert Simbolon STATUS | 1st Winner COMPETITION COMMITTEE | Dinas PUPR Sumatera Utara

The brief of this competition is to revive the Chinatown Neighborhood in Medan Marelan, North Sumatra. Medan Marelan was the capital of North Sumatra before this current Medan City (Kesawan). In the past, Medan-Marelan Chinatown was a great center of Chinese civilization in the Medan City. The Chinese people used to work as plantation workers of Deli Tobacco. There were also many Chinese nobles settled in Medan Marelan that contributed to the development of Medan city. As time goes by, the old chinatown fame is getting dimmer and forgotten after the city center is moved to Medan Kesawan. To revive the Chinatown of Medan Labuhan, we use some concepts such as Living Artifact, Heritage zone economy as social- culture-education generator, society participation, green area, Medan Labuhan as Art Space, and Mass Transportation Integration.
