DESIGN A LOGO MYSELF

REFLECTION Logo is a symbol of something. In my opinion, a logo should be simple but the meaning of the logo should be very clear. I think a logo will be a unsuccessful work if people can not get any information about what the logo represents when they see the logo in first time. Use my logo as example, this is not a beautiful or high quality logo but people can easily know this logo must have some relationship with designing because this logo is changed from word "design". "I" changed to "Y". This "Y" should represent something, such as people, company and concepts. Therefore, I think a good logo should be simple and clear.

case study House NA Sou Fujimoto Architects, 2010

Described as “a unity of separation and coherence, the house acts as both a single room and a collection of rooms. The loosely defined program and the individual floor plates create a setting for a range of activities that can take place at different scales. The house provides spaces of intimacy if two individuals choose to be close, while also accommodating for a group of guests by distributing people across the house.

Sou Fujimoto designed this multi-level home to recreate the experience of clambering up the branches of a tree. The steel and glass lattice encapsulates twenty-one small spaces at varying levels.

8 House BIG, 2011

8 House (Danish: 8 Tallet), also known as Big House, is a large mixed-use development built in the shape of a figure 8 on the southern perimeter of the new suburb of Ă˜restad in Copenhagen, Denmark. Designed by Bjarke Ingels, founding partner of the Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), the bow-shaped building consists of 61,000 square metres of three different types of residential housing and 10,000 square metres of retail premises and offices. It is the largest private development ever undertaken in Denmark.

The presentation of the designing and thinking process is an excellent and practical example for all designing students. I watched that presentation video and I was shocked. The designing and thinking methods of BIG is a practical system. Every step is reasonable. I learned a lot from the designing process of 8 house and these knowledge is very easy to use in our future designing works.

Archi Union Architects Inc, 2011 Lanxi Curtilage The Lanxi Curtilage is located at the International Intangible Cultural Heritage Park in Chengdu, China. It is composed of three parts: restaurant, inner courtyard and private club. It is an interpretation of traditional Chinese architecture through the language of digital fabrication methods. The spatial layout of this project represents a new interpretation of a traditional South China Garden. The multiple layouts of the longitudinal residence and courtyard reflect a hierarchical and multi-dimensional spatial pattern of traditional gardens. The silhouettes of the building’s roof embody rolling mountains and rivers, and also function as metaphor of the traditional Chinese sloping roof culture. The design of the ripple wall derived from a digital interpretation of water, a flexible yet natural conception.

REFLECTION

HOUSE NA shows me a new knid of spatial arrangement. In addition, it looks quite different with normal buildings because of its special steel structure and the use of glass in most area. All of these elements create a new type of building which is like a combination between building and open space. This can be a brand new concept that can be used in many archiecture works. People can experience a different communicating experience in such a special building.

As I mentioned above, the designing and thinking process is the most useful part to me. At the beginning, they design a very simple model the keep refining it. This part blocks sun light so I make it lower. This model now is like a big circle. How can I connect people live in different side? To change the shape of the building to make the circulation more reasonable then the "X" shape path comes out. Design a basic model then refining it according to the needs or problems is a very efficient way to design something.

Lanxi Curtilage is a good example for building an old style architecture in a creative way. This building gave me a new direction of designing a special and creative works. If we can create a special structure and use it in an exist building, it can be looked totally different even the materials are exact same as before. I like these three buildings very much because they give me a new method, designing language or inspiration to develop my own designing system.

WEEK 02 lecture note

DESIGNING YOUR DESIGNING

AT THE LEVEL OF DESIGN THINKING Choosing / Recognizing / Developing / Exercising your own FRAME(s), noting that Frames are layered AT THE LEVEL OF DESIGNING Choosing Design Approaches and Design Methods (or Heuristic) that follow from and/or support the Frame (so that you are not working against your own preferences or predilections) AT THE LEVEL OF THE IMMEDIATE TASK Primarily trying Design Ideas, Design Concepts and Design Conjectures and evaluating the results

eXERCISE Choose 3 locations for a subway station in university. When we looking for a suitable site for a subway station, I think there are few important points that we need to consider. -who will use this station -circulation -transportation around the station -relationship with surrounding environment

RELECTION Choose site is an important step for desiging an architecture work. We need to deeply and clearly understand the brief and consider all the elements that may affect the designing process. These are basic requirements for designing an architecture work in real life. Therefore, this is a very useful exercise for students who major in designing.

After we know what should we consider, we need tools or methods to analyse these elments. This is another useful knowledge I learned by doing this exercise. Taking photos and diawing diagrams are good ways to get information and analyse the possible sites. According to these 3 pages analysis, it can be seen that picture can record most information that we need and the diagram can clear show the analysis results. These two methods can improve the efficiency of choosing site dramatically.
