Efficiency, dynamism and comfort – all as standard in the hybrid family 05

06

Combining all the advantages of the internal combustion engine with the benefits of electric power to achieve superior performance and exceptional efficiency, the world of the hybrid is fast becoming one that we all want to know about. With plenty of experience in creating hybrid vehicles, Mercedes-Benz has already made strong statements with its line-up of models, including the C 300 BlueTEC Hybrid, E 300 BlueTEC Hybrid, S 300 BlueTEC Hybrid and the S 400 Hybrid.

“It’s even exempt to road tax and receives 100 per cent discount on the London Congestion Charge.” Already pushing the boundaries with the latest launch of the S 500 Plug-in Hybrid and C 350 Plug-in Hybrid, Mercedes-Benz is a brand that definitely does not do things by half. The S 500’s powerful V6 engine, supplemented by the hybrid module together generating 442hp, creates a powerful V8-like driving pleasure, and can even accelerate from rest to 62 mph in just 5.2 seconds. It’s even exempt to road tax and receives 100 per cent discount on the London Congestion Charge.

With a hunger for the hybrid, the team enjoyed an afternoon with two stunning hybrid models, pushing both to the limits to test the technological advancements of the brand. Already emphasising ‘efficiency at its best’ throughout the rest of the model range, it is no wonder Mercedes-Benz has made a bee-line for the benchmarks of the hybrid world… a benchmark that was certainly felt in our road test of the C 300 BlueTEC and E 300 BlueTEC Hybrids. Boasting a 7 speed-automatic transmission, a top speed of 150 mph and acceleration to 62 mph in 7.1 seconds, the E 300 BlueTEC Hybrid demonstrated the unfathomed power of the model variant. Offering a combined fuel consumption of 68.9 mpg through the twin turbochargers and electric motor, the drive was extremely smooth and, in-most parts, completely silent. Leading the duo the E-Class gave way to the magnificent C 300 BlueTEC Hybrid which offered even more dynamism and acceleration. Reaching 62 mph in just 6.4 seconds and top speeds of 152 mph, the model still retained impressive fuel consumption, with a combined level of 78.5 mpg. Forming just part of the ever-growing hybrid family, both the C-Class and E-Class clearly show the progressive stance of the Mercedes-Benz brand which continues to push the boundaries in every aspect of the motoring world. Constantly looking to maximise the possible efficiency of all journeys with minimum driver effort, the technological advancements made by the brand continue to impress. It’s these sorts of leaps that have allowed the S 500 Plug-in Hybrid to reach a combined fuel consumption of up to 100.0 mpg, which most 4-cylinder engines struggle to achieve. Launching the first concept vehicle with hybrid driver in 1982, the same year the C-Class’ predecessor, the Mercedes-Benz 190, was produced, it seems that the brand continues to stay head and shoulders above the rest. A growing segment, alongside the Electric range, if this isn’t the future, we don’t know what is. 07

The Next Generation Hailed as the new generation for Mercedes-Benz, the A-Class is set to continue its domination of the hatchback segment Focussed on reconciling the conflicts between sporty performance and enhanced comfort, the newest A-Class offering is set to reach new heights on its launch in September 2015. Unveiled to the world in June this year, the facelifted model brings with it an arrange of engine options, DYNAMIC SELECT and a dramatic design in the style of the successful MERCEDES AMG PETERONAS Formula 1 team with a special ‘Motorsport Edition’. Available for order from July 2015, it’s no wonder motor fans are already queuing at the doors to get a look.

Following a dramatic change in the compact class in 2012, the new A-Class presented a radical departure from the preceding series, and has since gone on to become the most progressive model in its segment. Now facelifted to meet the wishes of many customers, the focus remains on even more comfort with no loss of dynamic performance. Striking lines, dynamically curved surfaces and coupé-like window lines characterise the exterior of the A-Class, yet the new form offers a more arrow-shaped front bumper taking its lead strongly from the Concept A-Class of 2011. With a diamond Motorsport Edition of the A-Class

every aspect is considered for optimum comfort. Welcoming the MERCEDESAMG PETRONAS Formula 1 Team ‘Motorsport Edition’ aimed particularly at racing fans, this year already looks set to reach new heights for the A-Class. Featuring special petrol green highlights to the front and rear bumper trim, as well as the rim of the AMG light-alloy wheels, the eye catching design is sure to get drivers noticed. Inside the interior includes the petrol green surrounds of the air vents and contrasting topstitching. Available in all models from the A 220 d upwards (excluding the A 45 AMG) there is definitely room to stand out from the crowd with a brand new A-Class. Whilst retaining so many of the attributes we have championed the A-Class for since its launch in 2012, the new generation welcomes more comfort, style and customisation than ever before. Available to order, be sure to visit your nearest Robinsons Mercedes-Benz retailer in September to catch the first glimpse of this impressive model. grille, new LED High Performance headlamps (optional extra) and newly designed rear lights with exhaust tailpipes integrated into the bumper, the new generation emphasises the sportiness and dynamism of the successful series. New colours and materials, as well as new finishes for the trim in the dashboard, have ensured a fresh ambience to the model, with new features including Sahara

Beige and black leather in the Exclusive Package. The optional LED High Performance headlamps and ambience lighting now offer twelve colours and five dimming levels to ensure the ultimate in individualism, whilst the equipment range across the series has been expanded in many areas. There has even been an adjustment in the interior to increase the seat cushion depth by up to 60mm ensuring

The Unmistakable CLA Shooting Brake We put the latest Shooting Brake sibling to the test Sensuously shaped, stylish and boasting incredible sporty proportions, the CLA Shooting Brake is without doubt one of the most unmistakable models to have joined the Mercedes-Benz portfolio in recent years. Launched in spring this year, the newest family member has caused tidal waves amongst the motoring segment clearly demonstrating Mercedes-Benz dedication to a range of compact vehicles. These compacts, which now include five models, cover an extremely wide spectrum, with the B-Class sports tourer, the youthfully dynamic A-Class, the avant-garde

CLA-Class Coupé and the compact GLA-Class SUV, it seems Mercedes-Benz offers a solution for every customer. Like its big brother the CLS Shooting Brake, the newest arrival is targeted at active customers who are looking outside of the mainstream for a car that impresses with high utility value. Already seen on many of our region’s roads, the CLA Shooting Brake has been more than well received, with local press claiming it ‘offers an exceptional drive’ whilst appearing ‘mightly 17

Championed by those with an active lifestyle, the elegantly long drawn-out Shooting Brake tail end is the main cause of admiration. guaranteeing exceptional recreational value without compromising on the CLA’s aspiration to represent design at its best, this model by far exceed all expectations. And it’s not just the spaciousness that forms the Shooting Brake’s main strengths. With a Cd value of 0.26, the CLA Shooting Brake holds its own alongside the CLA BlueEFFICIENCY range that has set a new benchmark – both within the Mercedes-Benz model portfolio and among all series-production vehicles. Launched with an extensive engine collection, right from its first order appearance in March 2015, the CLA

The interior offers flush-fitting frames alongside the latest generation of telematics systems and high-quality materials, whilst ambient light options add the finishing touch with twelve colour schemes on offer to suit taste and mood. B-Class Electric Drive 340 NM at RPM 0-62 mph 7.9 seconds Top Speed: 99.5 B-Class

Blown Away By The B-Class Electric Drive Discovering the silent style of the latest electric drive

22

Marking the first move towards volume electric vehicles, the Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive has without doubt rumbled the world of automotives since its arrival earlier this year. Following the footsteps of the model’s facelift in 2014, the B-Class Electric Drive not only sets a new benchmark for the German brand, but also highlights a move towards a more sustainable and economical customer base. Split into two model lines – Sport and Electric Art – the B-Class Electric Drive is definitely no shying sibling to the rest of the Mercedes-Benz portfolio. Putting the model to the test on the roads of Cambridge last month, even now it’s hard to believe how much power, resilience and determination the model exudes. Launching from the starting post, the B-Class can zoom from rest to 62 mph in an astonishing 7.9 seconds thanks to its 180 hp and 340 NM of torque, all generated completely by an electric motor. Traveling up to 142 miles on a single charge, our road test proved hard to challenge it. Still boasting the generous space and style seen from the new B-Class design, the Electric Drive demonstrates the same level of versatility with the ability to carry five adults and a 501-litre boot – rising to 1,456-litres when the seats are folded down. By storing the lithium-ion batteries that power the model tightly under the floor of the car, the B-Class Electric Drive retains its benchmark cabin room and boot space. Charging via a wall box or public charging station, everything has been thought of to make the process as simple and efficient as possible. Fast charging cables are supplied with the car that will fit to public

bays found mostly at fuel stations and public car parks. Taking between three and four hours to bring a completely empty battery to a fully charged state, the fast recharge has proven popular with those working in the city or near charging stations. Also able to charge from a 13 amp domestic plug socket, full replenishment can be reached in around nine hours. With further optional packages available to enhance the capabilities of the B-Class Electric Drive, adapting the model to your lifestyle is within easy reach. The Energy Assist Package adds an adaptive energy recuperation system to sense road conditions, via a forward facing radar. When traffic is identified, increased recuperation is employed to make the most of any deceleration. Likewise, it can use signals from the COMAND system (when specified) to read the road condition ahead and adapt accordingly. Further measures fitted as part of the Energy Assist Package include privacy glass and a heated windscreen, to reduce loading on the air conditioning system, increased insulation around the doors and windows, and the addition of a ‘Range Plus’ button for occasional use, adding extra range to the battery capacity than would normally be feasible. Finally, the car emits a subtle but audible signal at speeds of up to 18 mph to warn pedestrians of the presence of the car. With so many forward-thinking attributes now bought under the three-pointed star, the B-Class Electric Drive builds on the success of the petrol and diesel models. With 350,000 examples of the B-Class already sold worldwide, and a noticeable preference for the model in the UK, we’re already seeing the newest edition welcomed with opened arms. 23

Mercedes-Benz of Peterborough Leads The Way Joining forces with the ‘other’ wheels of the road With over 5,000 riders following in the rear view mirror of the jaw-dropping S 350, Mercedes-Benz of Peterborough lead the way in the UK’s first ever UCI World Cycling Tour this summer, welcoming an outstanding number of cyclists for the Enervit Tour of Cambridgeshire Gran Fondo. A two day weekend event featuring Peterborough’s first ever 17 mile closed road Chrono TT and the outstanding Gran Fondo race, the inaugural Tour of Cambridgeshire stopped all in their tracks as thousands of cyclists covered the roads of our local area, bringing thousands more spectators to the roadside to cheer them on. Coming together with the fantastic organisation behind the event, Vericool Sports Management, Mercedes-Benz of Peterborough took the position of official vehicle partner providing transport for key race officials and performing the first circuit sweep after road closures. Showcasing a varied range from the Mercedes-Benz portfolio, our team from Peterborough expertly navigated a somewhat stylish SLK-Class, two sporty coupés from the E-Class and C-Class range and a spacious E-Class Estate round the route, before making way for our esteemed S-Class carrying the event’s Chief Commissaire.

“It was a fantastic event, both for Peterborough and Mercedes-Benz,” said Martin Brown, General Manager for Mercedes-Benz of Peterborough. “It’s great to see so many local residents and visitors taking part over the weekend, and we as a brand were very happy to support the event’s first year. “As well as driving out on the tracks, our team were able to showcase even more models in the event’s EXPO area, with the new CLA Shooting Brake and our ever-popular A-Class taking centre stage. The cars looked fantastic both on and off the road, and it was great to show so many guests everything we have to offer. “As a local business we’re always keen to support as many local events as we can, and this year’s Tour of Cambridgeshire enabled us to do just that. The organisation was fantastic, and the reaction from the cyclists has been even better. The organisers must be extremely proud.” Entering our own Mercedes-Benz team, Mercedes-Benz of Peterborough was pleased to support a strong team of cyclists, each proudly wearing our own branded jerseys to show the support. Taking part in the team, Jonathon Tully commented: “I would like to express my thanks for the invite to the Tour of Cambridgeshire. It was a thoroughly enjoyable event, and it was a real pleasure to wear the Mercedes-Benz jersey. “I managed to get an average speed of just under 20 mph, which is OK, and gives me something to improve on.” With so many determined cyclists on the road both Saturday and Sunday, the event saw thousands battle it out for pole position. Yet, fighting against wind and the undulating conditions of Cambridgeshire’s countryside, there was no

stopping Matt Bottrill, who produced the fastest time overall in Saturday’s Chrono TT. Achieving 34:11, a 41 second advantage on the next position, Bottrill championed the men’s title, whilst ex-GB international rider Julia Shaw came in at 39:31 taking pole position for the ladies. Sunday’s winners fought through the 1000 strong racing pen across an 83 mile route, before breaking way into a five man group in the closing stages. Dwindling down to a three man sprint by the time the finishing line came into sight, Andrew Williams took the win after 3 hours and 9 minutes of racing before the winning female Laura Massey crossed the finishing line just two minutes later. An event praised by all that took part and those involved, the Tour of Cambridgeshire already looks set to become a much anticipated event of the cycling calendar. Tom Caldwell from Vericool Sports Management added: “We’re overwhelmed with the response from riders and the public to the event. We’ve worked really hard to get the event to a UCI world class level in our first year and we’re already working on ways to improve the experience for next year.”

Redefining the MPV Introducing the youngest and largest member of the passenger car family from Stuttgart

V 250 BlueTEC

30

190 hp 44.8mpg 0 – 62 9.1 seconds

Whether off on a shopping spree or travelling with the whole family, heading out for a mountain bike trip at Thetford Forest or even driving guests to a red carpet event - the new V-Class provides optimum flexibility for every task. Having arrived in showrooms in April this year, the new model combines room for up to eight people with the high-class appeal, comfort and safety that distinguish automobiles bearing the three-pointed star. Perfect for those who appreciate great spaciousness but don’t want to sacrifice style and comfort, Mercedes-Benz newest MPV brings a whole new aspect to the market. Providing optimum flexibility for all drivers, the V-Class is available with an optional Sports package and many additional extras. Truly personalised to individualised tastes and requirements, it has become just as attractive for families as it has for people who need a spacious car for their leisure and sports activities. It is even suited to luxurious VIP and hotel shuttle transportation. Offering numerous seating configurations to meet any requirements, the MPV is kitted with luxury seats and armrests as standard. Thanks to improved technology and operating logic, they can be folded forward intuitively to afford fast and easy access to the rear bench seats.

Whilst functionality remains a must for an MPV, the V-Class adds comfort and style as though icing on the cake. Even at first glance the model sets an emotional highlight in its segment, clearly identifying itself as a member of the Mercedes-Benz family with its powerful upright radiator grille and progressively designed headlamps. Headlamps that, for the first time in this segment, offer all lighting functions in LED technology as an optional extra. Demonstrating that an elegant and dynamic appearance is possible is an XXL size, the V-Class offers value, efficiency and safety at the highest level. With this is mind, it’s no wonder Mercedes-Benz is now facing an entirely new customer group - those that are in need of a generous amount of space but never wanted to drive an MPV because style, a sense of wellbeing and ride comfort have so far been lacking in the segment.

Already gaining momentum as the perfect family vehicle due to its incredible emphasis on safety, Mercedes-Benz really is moving in a new direction with its latest MPV launch. A total of eleven innovative driver assistance systems ensure a high level of driving comfort and safety. These safety features are based on modern radar, camera and ultrasound sensors, which were introduced in the new E-Class and S-Class under the name ‘Intelligent Drive’. The standard equipment also includes Crosswind Assist, which stabilises the V-Class in strong gusts of crosswind, and Attention Assist, which can warn of fatigue. Optionally available is Active Park Assist, which makes parking the new MPV as easy and convenient as parking a compact car. Also boasting top efficiency, with fourcylinder performance, the V 220 BlueTEC launch model features the state-of-the-art 2.1-litre turbodiesel engine with twostage turbocharging, already seen in many passenger car models from the A-Class to the S-Class. With two power outlets levels reaching 163 hp, and fuel consumption at 45.6 mpg, the V 220 CDI occupies a leading position in the segment. Next in line, the V 250 BlueTEC engine boosts 190 hp, whilst offering incredibly smooth running characteristics and reduced interior noise. Packing punch in every aspect, the V-Class has already set new benchmarks in its segment with its design and a host of innovations. With so many options to suit every driver, we’re certain the roads of our region will soon be awash with the latest in MPV performance.

The Changing Face Of The SUV Introducing the new SUV siblings, the Mercedes-Benz GLC and GLE

34

Joining the family alongside their baby sister the Mercedes-Benz GLA, the all new GLC and GLE present the changing face of the SUV family. Strong, stylish and above all practical, the models truly reflect a new direction for both Mercedes-Benz and the SUV segment. The GLE, which forms the new face and name of the M-Class range, and the GLC have both caused traction since first premiering in the UK last year. Now with less than weeks until their arrival in

the UK, it’s no wonder the segment is set for a new injection of life. Blending the traditional Mercedes-Benz style with a twenty-first century look, the two models have taken on the modern design of the brand whilst retaining the confident, typical stylistic features of all generations. The GLE retains the characteristic C-pillar and the harmoniously integrated rear side window, both of which have been an integral part of the M-Class model series since birth in 1997, whilst the GLC

takes the large SUV wheels and sweeping lines previously seen in the same model line. Set to arrive on UK shores first, the GLE presents the biggest overhaul for the brand now offering a thoroughly revised version of its best seller in the SUV market. New benchmarks will be reached with regards to emissions and the drive systems possible, every part of this magnificent model has been considered, improved and modernised, most noticably the face lifted front and rear.

Across the available GLE engine ranges, the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions have been reduced by 17 per cent on average compared to its predecessor and, for the first time in the SUV market, the line is now expected to welcome a plug-in hybrid model, the GLE 500 e 4MATIC. What’s more, marking an unusual move for the brand, the world premiere welcomes the high-performance SUV model, the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S 4MATIC at the same time.

Impressing all with its drive and adaptability, the GLE offers groundbreaking assistance systems, a nine-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic transmissions and the innovative DYNAMIC SELECT handling control system, which boasts extensive drive and off-road programmes as standard. Combined with further standard systems, including Crosswind Assist, COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS and communications module for the use of Mercedes ‘connect me’ services, every aspect has been analysed to get the best, and most improved, drive. Of course, there is no smoke without fire. Under the bonnet, the GLE comes alive with both 4-cylinder, 6-cylinder and 8-cyclinder options designed to suit every driver. Introducing the GLE 250 d 4MATIC, GLE 350 d 4MATIC and the outstanding GLE 63 S 4MATIC, the all-wheel-drive models impress with fast gear changes and perfect transitions for energetic sprinting,

“Both models are also set to welcome a sportier version under the Coupé segment, presenting a bold move for Mercedes-Benz.” as well as gentle, barely perceptible gear changes for delightful cruising and strategies designed to increase traction in terrain. Equally outstanding the GLC really is programmed for motoring pleasure. Whether you’re enjoying a gentle cruise, or sprinting through the city, the DYNAMIC SELECT reveals five driving modes to suit any occasion, all at the touch of a button. Its off-road capabilities have put Mercedes-Benz at the forefront of the SUV market, with optional AIR BODY CONTROL air suspension and Off-Road packages ensuring the 4MATIC permanent allwheel-drive offers optimum output for any terrain. Delivering dynamic handling whilst ensuring increased levels of safety in the most challenging road conditions,

the GLC is intuitively designed to monitor grip levels making every journey one of ease. Both models will also feature a sportier version under the Coupé segment, presenting a bold move for Mercedes-Benz. Whilst the GLE Coupé has already reached the UK, the GLC Coupé is yet to be revealed. Combining the character of the dynamic G-Class range with the compact market, the brand has left no stone unturned in searching for the perfect car for every driver. Joining forces with the GLA, released last year, the new SUV range now includes seven models, allowing customers to order a tailormade vehicle to suit their personal preferences. A Can-Do Attitude With The Mercedes-Benz GLA

It’s great to have the right attitude in life. It’s even better to have great reasons for having it. In developing the new GLA, Mercedes-Benz engineers took it all over the world to prove its talents, and then improve on them. They honed its agility to a sharp edge, and polished its abilities to a brilliant shine. They built its confidence purely from its competence and created an entirely new size of Mercedes-Benz SUV that’s captivated the segment. Proving to be one of the brand’s most demanded models within the Motability sector this year, we thought we’d take a look behind the bonnet to find out exactly what sparked the ignition. Speaking entirely for itself, the GLA 250 is simply quick, slick and trick. A 208-hp turbo-4, 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, and available variabletorque 4MATIC all-wheel drive gives this Mercedes-Benz true performance credentials. Rugged capability and generous

cargo capacity tell you it’s an authentic SUV, whilst the innovative luxury, advanced safety and unmistakable style let you know it’s genuinely earned the star in its grille. Inside, the true beauty of the GLA cabin is demonstrated through its flexible style. It can be so many different things to so many people — or even to one person. Its front seats are deeply contoured and power-adjustable. A memory for each seat lets you save your favourite setting, plus two more. The steering wheel adjusts four ways, and lets you control a range of functions without letting go of its supple leather wrapping. And with the Motability Scheme enabling eligible candidates to use their Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance or their War Pensioners’ Motability Supplement to help

fund a new Mercedes-Benz, driving away in a new GLA has never been easier. Under the scheme, drivers are able to benefit from a new Mercedes-Benz every three years and full breakdown assistance, all whilst resting safe in the knowledge that insurance, servicing and maintenance is all taken care of. You don’t have to drive – you can nominate up to two other drivers or pay a little extra for a third, to provide full flexibility with your lifestyle, and also take advantage of the many adaptations on offer at no extra charge. What’s more, our 60,000 mileage allowance over three years will make sure nothing stops your journey on the road, and we’ll even take care of any tyre and windscreen replacements with your tax charges thrown in. Driving Performance Meets Definitive Design The Mercedes-AMG sports car brand moves into a new, top-class sports car segment with the arrival of the long-awaiting AMG GT S Arriving in April this year, the new Mercedes-Benz AMG GT and GT S have caused more than a stir in the motoring world. Both sports cars of the purest form, the breath-taking proportions, powerfully sculpted surfaces and flowing spirit of the glorious Mercedes-Benz sports cars from the past are exactly what fans have been dreaming of, and at long last it is here. Taking the AMG GT S out for a spin one summer’s afternoon, the team knew they were in for more than a bit of fun. Mixing the exhilaration expected of an AMG with precision, comfort and practicality, the twoseater sports car has continued to surpass all expectations. Inside, 46

the interior mixes beautiful, high quality materials, including nappa leather, carbon and aluminium, with the absolute best in technology. Offering an 8.4-inch central screen, featuring COMAND, and simple, elegant controls, including the ability to control the exhaust valves via the DYNAMIC SELECT button, the GT S really is every driver’s dream. But it’s not all beauty. This model has more than enough brains to challenge even the most practical of roadsters. Its hatchback boot and load space measures an impressive 350-litres, whilst its largely aluminium chassis structure makes it strong and light, weighing just 231kg. Mixed with an impressive V8 engine, which can accelerate from rest to 62 mph in just 3.8 seconds, and can hit 193mph, the AMG GT S has by far upped the anti when it comes to sports cars. For a brand that first launched with a racing car, the GT S represents another leap forward for the German talents… and about time too. Arriving on the wake of 3,127 AMG car registrations last year in the UK alone, a figure that is up 40 per cent on 2012, it seems that Mercedes-Benz fans really are pushing the boundaries of the racing car ethos… an ethos which we, quite frankly, are happy to abide by.

Smart Choice For The City We take the new generation smart family out for a spin Cambridge is a great city to explore, particularly from behind the wheel of the two newest smart models, the fortwo and forfour. Taking these two stylish cars for a test drive one Friday afternoon, the team nipped in and out of the city’s cobbled streets and bustling roadways with all the ease and style expected of the smart brand. Engineered by the talents at Mercedes-Benz it’s no wonder the new models have caused more than a stir since launching earlier this year and it’s easy to see why. Despite modest proportions both cars pack more than a punch with the latest equipment and features found inside. Lots of additional equipment has been 50

added to the new generation fortwo, including direct steer electric power steering, an automatic start/stop function and LED daytime running lights, making it a car to be reckoned with. Racing along the ‘backs’ of the historical city, the fortwo led the way amicably showing off its agile stance and efficient behaviour. At the top of the micro-car segment, its 71 hp engine impressed the team, easily responding to every touch whilst providing a comfortable and exciting ride. Offering a top speed of 94 mph, and returning 68.9 mpg on the combined cycle, it was more than easy to see why the fortwo has captivated the hearts of city-drivers and style seekers alike. Presenting a new five-speed manual gearbox for the first time, as well as an optional six-speed dual clutch automatic transmission, the manual stance made it easy to battle through the city’s challenging and winding roads, whilst the lightweight nature of the car aided impressive acceleration and steering control throughout the trip. Measuring at just over 2.5 metres long (2.69m to be exact), the compact dimensions made navigating, parking and turning easier than any car experienced before. Boasting a turning circle of just 6.95m kerb-tokerb it can even out-turn a London cab, and makes the ‘Austin Powers’ 3-point-turn a task of the past.

Following closely on the tail of one of our favourite micro-cars, the forfour presented even more style, economy and practicality. Space for four passengers with the seats up, and a 50” TV with the seats down, the forfour proves that even the smallest of cars can be more than suitable for everyday life. Driving Your Business Forward Contact our Fleet Team on 01284 778 950

Making your business stand out from the crowd, whilst balancing the books is a continued battle, yet one that many businesses continue to fight. We caught up with the Robinsons Mercedes-Benz Fleet Team to find out just how a corporate vehicle can benefit your business, whilst getting to know the local, friendly faces behind the brand.

Keith Turner

Gareth Harris

Business Development Manager

Key Account Manager

What advice would you give a business owner looking to launch his/her first fleet?

How has Mercedes-Benz adapted to the business market?

There are so many things to consider when setting up a fleet. To start with, what are your business requirements and which vehicles would best suit these. How will your organisation be funding the vehicles, if leasing which funder has the best support, will you manage the fleet in house or outsource to the funder. Review a number of vehicles, appraise them on extended test drives and speak with your company car drivers for feedback on each model.

Mercedes-Benz has embraced the business sales market fully, with a dedicated team of Strategic Account Managers who visit larger fleets and work closely with the Business Sales Teams based in local dealerships, as well as competitive finance solutions for business users. Taking the lead with green technologies, optimising internal combustion engines and developing hybrid and electric vehicles, we are now able to offer low CO2 emissions across the product range, which benefits business users with the lower Benefit in Kind tax rates. We’re also able to offer demonstrators within 48 hours of ordering, and are proud to offer Business Lounges in all our dealerships to allow you to carry on with your work whilst visiting us. You can also opt to have the car collected from the business premises if preferred.

What would be your ‘must-have’ technology option for a business user? The must have technology in my opinion is the Collision Prevention Assist which is being rolled out across the Mercedes-Benz range. Operating at speeds above 20 mph, Collision Prevention Assist uses radar to constantly monitor closing speeds between your Mercedes-Benz and the moving vehicle in front. If the system determines that a collision may be likely, it is able to output visual and acoustic warnings to alert a distracted driver, Adaptive Brake Assist will automatically provide the ideal level of braking as soon as you start to brake. And at speeds up to 40 mph, Collision Prevention Assist and Adaptive Brake Assist will even help you avoid stationary objects that you may not have seen. It’s all part of our commitment to the best or nothing, and it’s only from Mercedes-Benz.

Which vehicles have the most safety features as standard?

Which model is the most popular within the corporate market and why? The new C-Class Saloon is the most popular and year to date sells more than rivals such as BMW 3 series and Audi A4. Company car drivers are attracted by its low CO2 emissions, its high standard equipment levels and attractive styling. It has the same media system introduced in the S-Class giving excellent connectivity of MP3 players and mobile phones. This new model weighs 100kg less than the previous C-Class model resulting in lively performance and superb economy.

Analyse the whole life costs of these vehicles including insurance and the BIK for the drivers. It is very important to have a company car policy and procedures in place and that these are understood by everyone driving within your organisation on business. 53

Zoey Williamson Corporate Sales Supervisor

Which new release are you most looking forward to over the remainder of 2015? Although strictly speaking it’s not a new model, the car I am most looking forward to is the facelifted A-Class which is due from September build. The A-Class is one of the most popular cars within the fleet segment and although we are only expecting minor changes there is a lot of excitement surrounding it.

Have you noticed any changes in the demands of business users in recent years? The only real change that I have noticed is the technology requirements for drivers. When I first started the most important option for business users was Telephone Pre Wire but now that the whole Mercedes-Benz range has Bluetooth as standard this isn’t an option we see ordered. Instead options such as ‘Media Interface’ and ‘Navigation’ have become a must for most business users.

What benefits are there to leasing cars for business use? One of the benefits is that the vehicle will show as ‘off the balance sheet’ as it isn’t classed as an asset. Also subject to emissions, payments can be deducted from profit & loss accounts.

Are commercial use contracts only suitable to large businesses?

Describe what the Mercedes-Benz brand means to you in one word. Unsurpassable.

What’s your favourite car to drive and why? The G 63 AMG! Driving it changed my whole opinion of the G-Class. Being slightly more sensible, an E-Class Coupé – beautiful lines teamed with a fabulous drive.

Fleets are available to all businesses, regardless of size. Whether it’s two, ten or one hundred cars, our team can find the most suitable finance solution for your business and its objectives.

The Joust of St Peter Mercedes-Benz of Peterborough takes a trip back in time

56

Taking Peterborough by storm, the annual Heritage Festival returned once again to the bustling centre of the city in June, bringing with it over 40,000 visitors and historical enthusiasts. Yet this year proved to be like no other welcoming not only the City’s first medieval tournament, but the UK’s first city centre jousting tournament since 1467. The Joust of St Peter bought with it shattering lances, the thunder of horse hooves and the roar of crowds, leaving everyone quaking in their boots. The display, organised by the City’s cultural services, Vivacity, and supported by Perkins Engine company and Peterborough Cathedral was definitely not one to be forgotten in

attention of all passers-by, it was no wonder that the three-pointed star and menacing grille fitted in with such a range of powerful opponents. Glaring from their privileged position in the Cathedral precinct, the entire display was one of determination and grace – just as was seen in the arena before the magnificent west front of Peterborough Cathedral. Surrounded by a foray of international joust competitors, the entire scene was one few would have experienced before. A scene which offered a full recreation - not a re-enactment – of a jousting tornament from the time of Richard III.

“... yet drawing crowds from all over Cambridgeshire, it was easy to see that the event was a success.” a hurry, with professional jousters competing from across Europe over the two-day event. Standing proudly amongst the Spanish geldings and knights in their shining full plate armour, Mercedes-Benz of Peterborough bought together the perfect alignment of old and new right before the eyes of all whom visited. Sparking from the doorstep of the City’s magnificent Cathedral, our highly regarded compact A-Class dominated attention, accompanied by the unfathomed CLA Shooting Brake. With both models conquering the

Demonstrating a real battle from the 15th century is by no means an easy feat, yet drawing crowds from all over Cambridgeshire, it was easy to see that the event was a success. Stuart Orme, Vivacity’s Interpretation Manager explained: “It was the first time something like this had been done in England for 500 years. Tournaments like this tended to take place at royal palaces and castles; the last time it was done in a town centre was at Smithfield for Edward IV in 1467. And of course with the glorious backdrop of the Peterborough Cathedral, it was always going to be

absolutely spectacular.” Employing an incredible level of skill to bring the event together, the professional riders, train on their own horses, proudly wearing made-to-measure armour, each personalised to the individual knight. No stone was left unturned to ensure that a authentic tornament was recreated. Forming a spectacle at the Heritage Festival, the Joust of St Peter proved more than an attraction, yet mixed with a full Period Market in the Cathedral Precincts, a Food Fayre along Exchange Street and some more action-packed battle drama, live music and falconry displays, the event saw thousands descend upon the city. Already seen as a once in a lifetime experience, it was no wonder Mercedes-Benz wanted to be part of the action proudly supporting Peterborough’s bold move to yet another ‘first’. Following closely in the footsteps of the Tour of Cambridgeshire cycling event earlier in the month, which had taken titles for the largest closed road event in the UK, it seems that Peterborough is coming alive with entertainment. So as the ground settles after an earth-shattering event, it is without doubt that the weekend was a truly amazing experience… one that Mercedes-Benz of Peterborough was proud to be a part of. 57

A Stunning Summer’s Evening at Hotel Felix We enjoy a visit to Cambridge’s bustling hotel With summer in full flow, spending a Sunday afternoon at the glamorous Hotel Felix in Cambridge has always been at the top of anyone’s to-do list. Arriving in style, driving the stunning C 220 Saloon, my guest and I crossed the immaculate gardens, passing the Hotel’s iconic tiger statue, before stepping inside the chic restaurant, aptly named The Graffiti. Striking, appealing and finished to the highest of standards, it was the perfect symmetry of the vehicle interior we had just left. Designed to appease all who enter, my guest and I couldn’t wait to settle down into our seats and really take in the stunning surroundings.

Gazing across the Hotel’s grounds, the pergola and terrace area buzzed with visiting diners enjoying the last of the day’s sun. Completely peaceful in every sense it was hard to remember that we were just five miles from Cambridge’s city centre. Boasting 52 luxurious rooms, the Hotel’s stunning attention to details was felt in every corner. Its Victorian architecture and modern, twenty-first century additions made it easy to see why guests are drawn from all over the region. Holding four stars to its name, the boutique hotel plays host to relaxing weekend breaks, celebratory dinners,

delicious afternoon tea and even makes the perfect wedding venue. With four beautifully appointed private function rooms, it offers the perfect venue for both corporate and private events too. Returning our attention back to the Graffiti Restaurant, my guest and I were handed a carefully planned and considered menu, offering seasonal delights and local produce. Opting for the pan-fried scallops, truffle mash, pea veloute and crispy pancetta to start I couldn’t fault a single mouthful. The soft scallops were an absolute delight, complimented perfectly by the crisp textures and pea flavourings. My guest, who enjoyed squid tempura, harrissa mayonnaise and mixed leaves looked equally impressed. We were on to a winning start.

“Boasting 52 luxurious rooms, the Hotel’s stunning attention to details was felt in every corner.” Perfectly timed, the main courses were served presenting a trio of lamb: shoulder, cutlet and fillet, accompanied by parmentier potatoes and caponta for my guest, whilst I opted for the pan fried fillet of sea bream, rosti potatoes, samphire and sauce vierge. With so many flavours on one table, the colours were almost as intense as the textures, making it one evening that will not be forgotten in a hurry. With a tiny bit of room left for dessert, we were lucky enough to sample the delicious cappuccino cheesecake and raspberry pannacotta with lemongrass syrup, following the recommendations of our impeccable waiter for the evening. Leaving with our stomachs full, a fantastic time was had by both my guest and I. Hotel Felix truly is the venue to visit, and one that I can’t wait to return to.

Leaders of Style Showstopping fashion at the Mercedes-Benz of Norwich Retailer’s Show norwichfashion. co.uk

66

Taking the city by storm, Norwich Fashion Week descended upon local fashion followers in March, bringing with it an array of styles to suit all. With so much innovation and elegance involved in the week long celebration it was no wonder Mercedes-Benz of Norwich stepped up to the mark, introducing the week with the Mercedes-Benz of Norwich Retailer’s Show. The first show for 2015, guests were greeted with an impressive line-up of our finest Mercedes-Benz models, including a stunning C-Class Saloon which had been dressed with catwalk style. The G-Class stood in line captivating the attention of all that attended, whilst the A-Class and SLK-Class both demonstrated the incredible amount of style and luxury within the Mercedes-Benz brand. Following a red carpet into the depths of the OPEN venue, guests were greeted with stalls, exhibitions and demonstration stands where many opted to have their make-up topped up by the city’s local beauty boutiques whilst enjoying the cocktails on offer. Taking to the seats as the show began, it was clear to see that

the Mercedes-Benz of Norwich Retailers Show was going to leave no stone unturned. Welcoming Heart Radio presenters, Dave and Heidi, to the stage to introduce the show, it was in no time at all that the catwalk filled with some of the highlights of our spring/summer wardrobe for men and women alike. Welcoming the 70s look seen across catwalks and high streets alike this summer, the show gave an insight into the must-have

wardrobe staples presenting fringing, floppy hats and bright prints as the accessories of the season. Stepping back to reveal the male trends of the season, guests were given glimpses of this summer’s tailored style with brogues, loafers and boots heightening each and every look. More casual looks, offered by the city’s independent boutiques and high-street names, were achieved with leather jackets, jeans, printed tees and polo shirts. Bringing the show to a dazzling close, the jewellery display from local independent Winsor Bishop proved to be a catwalk like never before. Glistening from every angle, the models brought a fairy-tale edge to the show with black tutus and outstanding pieces from the local jeweller. Marking just the beginning of the fashion week, the event was a true spectacle setting the bar for the catwalks to follow. Becoming the talk of the town, the event covered the city with catwalk shows

and pop-up events taking place in every corner. The remainder of the week welcomed a Vintage Show in the famous Puppet Theatre, the Designer’s Show and, for the more edgy fashion follower, the Fashion Excess Show, which saw exciting fusions of street style and catwalk imagination. With so much going on, there was no stopping the Mercedes-Benz of Norwich team, who teamed up with the city’s esteemed local magazine, The Norwich Resident, delivering the famous G-Class on set for a fashion shoot, before orchestrating a flash mob style pop-up catwalk amongst a car display at Chapelfield shopping centre over the weekend. Perfectly mirroring the dynamic styling and innovation of the Mercedes-Benz brand, the week-long celebration of all things fashion saw over 170,000 visitors join the cult, each equally impressed with the determination and drive of Norwich’s homegrown talents. With next year’s event already in the making, the minds behind the team at Mercedes-Benz of Norwich are already working in overdrive to ensure next year is bigger and better than ever before.

Here Come The Girls

Mercedes-Benz of Bury St Edmunds and Mercedes-Benz of Cambridge join the style ranks at Newmarket Racecourses

With fashion in full flow across the racing calendar this summer, Newmarket Racecourses’ esteemed Ladies Day event has always been the perfect match for a stylish, innovative brand such as Mercedes-Benz. Partnering this year’s Moët & Chandon July Festival, Mercedes-Benz of Bury St Edmunds and Mercedes-Benz of Cambridge are looking forward to a day full of fashion spotting at the renowned event with our team showcasing the chic stance of the Mercedes-Benz brand. Joining the fillies on Ladies Day, guests will be able to spot the sophisticated CLA Shooting Brake model in the crowd, sitting perfectly alongside the stunning black SLK-Class, which is sure to create a fashionable display like no other. Held on 9th July, and marking the first day of the Moët and Chandon July Festival, it’s already set to be an unmissable event this year. With thousands of ladies and gents already set to join in the fun at the ‘Fashion at the Festival’, the event encourages all attending females to enter into the ‘best dressed’ competition to win one of the fantastic prizes on offer. With over £20,000 worth of prizes awarded over the three day event itself, prizes include spa breaks, a magnum of Champagne, styling vouchers, gym memberships, fashion photoshoots and, of course, a stunning Mercedes-Benz Driving Experience at the Brooklands Racetrack at Mercedes-Benz World in Surrey. Amy Starkey, Director of the Jockey Club Racecourses, said: “We’re 72

looking forward to a spectacular 2015 Moët and Chandon July Festival, and the very best of British Horse Racing, with Newmarket Racecourses hosting East Anglia’s most stylish summer festival. “Over the three days, superb fashions will be seen in the grandstands, on the lawns and around the parade ring, with visitors in with the chance of winning some amazing prizes.” Having partnered with the event in previous years, both Mercedes-Benz of Bury St Edmunds and Mercedes-Benz of Cambridge are looking forward to being a part of the summer’s hottest ticketed event. Promising to match the glamour and edge seen at Ascot Racecourse already this year, the entire team is looking forward to witnessing the fashion statements, no matter how bold. A must-attend event for many racegoers, as well as for fashion lovers up and down the country, the day also

welcomes the Group Two Princess of Wales Stakes as its feature event, and must-see race. However, leaving the best to last, the Robinsons Mercedes-Benz Handicap Stakes concludes the day’s racing, with Mercedes-Benz of Bury St Edmunds General Manager, Glenn Napper, presenting the winner’s prize and best turned out award. Working with East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) as the first official charity partner for the Moët and Chandon July Festival, this year is one event that we’re extremely proud to be a part of. With the weather looking set to stay dry, we just hope that our stunning duo of Mercedes-Benz don’t take home all the prizes for best dressed.

“Held on 9th July, and marking the first day of the Moet and Chandon July Festival, it’s already set to be an unmissable event this year.”

A Taste of Thailand

Rachel Cracknell experiences far eastern flavours at Thai Street Cafe...

Located at the top of Newmarket High Street, Thai Street Café is the perfect spot to enjoy a taste from the Far East. Arriving on a very hot summer lunchtime, it was a delight to be handed two refreshing cocktails. I started with a Pimm’s, but this was no ordinary Pimm’s, it was the Thai Street Special, combining rum, ginger beer and plenty of fresh fruits. I am not normally a fan of ginger beer, but the robust flavour added a unique kick to the drink. My guest had the strawberry Mojito, which was no disappointment as the sun continued to shine. Whilst gazing over the menu, the Thai Street Specialities caught my eye first. From 76

“The dish was striking and looked delicious. It was full of flavour, combined various textures and it was the ideal way to start the Thai feast.” Pad Ka Pao, a Bangkok Street favourite combining minced pork stir fried with chilli and garlic, to the Duck Red Curry with fragranced jasmine rice, you really are spoilt for choice at this restaurant. The starters arrived and I was extremely intrigued to try frogs’ legs for the very first time. Yes that’s right, frogs’ legs! Glazed in a garlic sauce, the meat was very delicate and surprisingly tasty. Whilst enjoying the unique flavour of frogs’ legs, my guest tucked into the crispy chilli squid, which is a staple starter on the restaurants menu. The dish was striking and looked delicious. It was full of flavour, combined various textures and it was the ideal way to start the Thai feast. With our taste buds tingling, we couldn’t

wait for the next course of Duck Red Curry and Grilled Jumbo King Prawns with a Som Tum salad. The duck was tender, full of flavour and was simply scrumptious. The pineapple was a tasty addition to the curry and added a distinctive taste to the exquisite meal. My guest’s dish of Jumbo King Prawns and salad was equally as eye-catching and colourful as the Duck Red Curry. The salad was tasty, sharp and spicy and matched the well-seasoned and perfectly cooked jumbo prawns. We left the Thai Street Cafe full to the brim, sadly saying goodbye to the friendly and attentive staff as they began to welcome in the evening dinner guests. We are sure to be back over the coming summer months.

The Mercedes-Benz Golf Trophy Celebrating the regional heats of this year’s golf trophy

80

The annual Mercedes-Benz Golf Trophy saw players from Bury St Edmunds, Cambridge, Kings Lynn, Norwich and Peterborough come together in a series of qualifier heats across East Anglia. First taking to the tee at Brampton Park Golf Club in Huntingdon, customers from Cambridge and Peterborough battled against ferocious winds, persistent rain and a course potted with waterholes, lakes and bunkers to take one of nine qualifying positions across three handicap categories. Despite the challenging weather conditions, spirits remained high throughout the day as the competitors dried off and joined one another for a delicious dinner and awards presentation. Playing alongside the team of customers, Mercedes-Benz of Peterborough General Manager, Martin Brown, said: “It was a great day, despite the weather, and a

brilliant opportunity to really get to know our customers. It’s the first time I’ve been out on the course, but even with a such a high handicap, it was extremely entertaining and I played with a fantastic partner.” Awarding three prizes across three categories (scratch to 10 handicap, 11 to 18 handicap and 19 and over), the bar was already set for the following two qualifying heats. Next onto Thetford Golf Club in Suffolk, customers from Mercedes-Benz of Bury St Edmunds and Mercedes-Benz of Kings Lynn came together at a brand new location for 2015, each working through the long, narrow holes of the course in hope of qualifying. A brilliant day, both weatherwise and due to the fantastic

players who attended, it was perfect in every sense. Again coming together for the evening meal, Mercedes-Benz of Bury St Edmunds General Manager, Glenn Napper, presented the nine winning positions to an eagerly awaiting audience. The final Robinsons Mercedes-Benz golf heat took place at the esteemed Weston Park Golf Club in Norwich. A club we have played at for many years, Mercedes-Benz of Norwich customers joined together once again to battle it out for the last nine remaining qualifying positions. With many new and returning faces, the day proved enjoyable for all with some impressive scores achieved by players and staff members. A keen golfer himself,

Sales Executive Martin Cooke said: “It was a fantastic day again this year, and it was great to see a few new faces. We’re always looking for more customers to play, so if you’re an avid fan make sure you let our team know.” With nine players joining the winners from Brampton Park Golf Club and Thetford Golf Club, the regional qualifier was set. Held on 2nd July 2015, at Sprowston Marriot Hotel and Manor in Norwich, the glorious sunshine held out throughout the day, enabling our top 27 players to not only enjoy a fantastic round of golf, but to also mix with customers from all over our market area. Completing the course in under four hours, players enjoyed a few moments in the sun before coming together to see this year’s champions crowned. With one position available within each category, the competition stepped up a gear with all winners then going on to compete in the Mercedes-Benz Golf Trophy SemiFinals at St George’s Hill Golf Club in Weybridge, Surrey. Taking pole position for the 19 and over handicap, Roger Hickman stepped up to the mark scoring an impressive 39 points on his round. Next in line came Mike Robinson, who topped the 11 to 18 handicap, and finally this year’s scratch to 10 handicap position was taken by the well deserved Ian Macrea. Our congratulations to the three qualifiers, who will go on to represent Robinsons Mercedes-Benz in Weybridge on 30th July 2015. Winners from the next round have the opportunity to play at St Andrew’s in Scotland, so we are sure you’ll all be behind us in wishing the three the best of luck. 81
