LA DECADENCE HOTEL DESIGN CHARRETTE

IN COLLABORATION WITH CLARE HERRERRA AND NATALIE FLESHMAN

Prompt

THIS PROJECT AIMED TO DESIGN THE HOTEL LOBBY AND EXCLUSIVE LUXURY SUITE FOR A BRAND NEW MEGA-HOTEL IN LAS VEGAS, NEVADA. THE CLIENTS FINANCING THIS PROJECT INCLUDE ELSIE DE WOLFE, ELLA FITZGERALD MATSUO BASHO, AND AI WEIWE.

Client

OUR CLIENTS REPRESENT A BREAK FROM THE EXPECTED IN THEIR PERSPECTIVE FIELDS, AS THEIR INNOVATION AND FRESH PERSPECTIVE WERE GROUNDBREAKING DURING THEIR TIME. THEIR ART FORMS ALSO CREATE THE POTENTIAL FOR A POCKET OF EXPERIENCE, WITH LAYERS OF MEANING TO BE FOUND BY EACH PERSON THAT ENCOUNTERS THEM.

P E R S P E C T I V E

WITH THE EXPERIENCE OF BREAKING OPEN A GEODE GUIDING OUR DECISIONS, OUR DESIGN SEEKS TO CREATE A SERIES OF UNEXPECTED POCKETS OF EXPERIENCE THROUGH THE USE OF CONTRAST, DEGREES OF ENCLOSURE, LAYERING, PROPORTION, AND HARMONY.

The ELEVATOR surrounding wall reveals exposed stone, representing the outer layer of a geode, while the flickers of color and pattern break up the wall for a colorful pocket of experience mimicking the opening of a geode.

The curves in the LOBBY SEATING area were inspired by one of the clients, Ella Fitzgerald, and the feeling of her flowing music. The geometric lighting grazing the top of the area brings the crystalize structure of the geode into our experience, as well as the mural of a Nevada rock formation. Guests overlook the Las Vegas skyline in a pocket of experience

The MOOD BOARD shows a selection of various textures and imagery that inspired design choices. Once again, the breaking open of the geode lead design decisions, as well as the color choices for the hotel suite.

THE HISTORY OF ART FROM THE ECCENTRIC CITY OF BALTIMORE IS ESSENTIAL IN THE MAKING OF THIS SPACE, AS THE CITY SAW A MAJOR SHIFT IN THE 1970S, HEAVILY MARGINALIZING THE WORKING CLASS AND DEEPLY INFLUENCED THE ARTS IN THE SURROUNDING AREA, AS WELL AS INTRODUCING THE BALTIMORE MURAL PROJECT. THIS PROJECT WAS CREATED IN 1975 AND DESIGNED TO INSTILL PRIDE AND CREATE BEAUTIFUL EXPRESSIONS ACROSS THE CITY WORKING WITH LOCAL ARTISTS. THE DESIGN OF THIS SPACE SEEKS TO EXPLORE THE ECCENTRIC NATURE OF THE CITY OF BALTIMORE AND TAKE INSPIRATION FROM THE VIBRANCY AND STRIKING FEATURES OF THE CITY, LIKE MANY ARTISTS BEFORE. THE BRIGHT AND ECLECTIC SPACE WILL DELVE INTO THE DEEP HISTORY OF ART AND THIS IMPACT ON POVERTY IN THE AREA THAT IN TURN INFLUENCED THE COLORFUL MURALS THAT DECK THE CITY AND ADORN THE SPACE SIMILARLY.

ARTIST ATELIER

Prompt

THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROJECT WAS TO DESIGN THE ATELIER, LIVING, AND SMALL EXHIBIT QUARTERS OF AN ARTIST IN THE VISUAL ARTS FIELD, SYNTHESIZING ALL THE DESIGN SKILLS ACQUIRED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.

Concept

THE MAKING OF MOSAICS COMES FROM BREAKING PIECES OF GLASS, CERAMIC, STONE, AND OTHER THINGS TO CREATE A BEAUTIFUL CREATION FROM THE BREAKAGE. THIS DESIGN INCORPORATES MOSAICS OF ALL KINDS ON THE FLOOR, WALL, SURFACES, AND DECORATIVE PIECES THROUGHOUT THE DESIGN. THE SPACE DESIGN CAME FROM BREAKING UP SQUARES, SIMILARLY TO HOW MOSAICS ARE MADE, AND ORDERING THEM TO MAKE THE SPACE.
