fter several months of high-spirited campaigning, the recent Rochdale Village Board of Directors’ elections resulted in no quorum being reached. Greetings Cooperators,

The goal of the Board is to physically maintain the property without saddling the Shareholders with impossible carrying charge increases. We know that you are receiving information from several sources and it is our job to provide you with enough information to make an informed decision.

Thank you for coming out to vote at this past Board of Directors’ election. Unfortunately, we didn’t reach a quorum. Now that the election is over it is time to get back to the business of running the corporation. We need to have our Community Relations Committee establish a greater rapport with 113th Precinct and the local politicians while emphasizing that Rochdale Village is private property. Since our streets are dedicated, the police can patrol our circles and can come to the rest of the complex for official business or if a complaint other issue or request is made. RV launches Cease the Grease initiative in time for holidays By Susan Van Brackle

Y

ear-end holiday cheer is almost upon us. That usually means lots of entertaining, cooking and potentially, lots of grease from prepared foods and seasonal delicacies. The Rochdale Village Maintenance department is getting ahead of the celebrations by launching an initiative that has been underwritten by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection Agency. Cease the Grease espouses proper disposal of

household cooking grease. Cooking oil that is poured down drains has the ability to clog city sewers and cause sewage backups into homes and sometimes local waterways. The EPA knows that clogged sewers and subsequent backups are commonplace occurrences in multi-unit dwellings, which is why the Cease the Grease initiative was launched throughout the boroughs. In an effort to prevent this from happening at RV, Cease the Grease disposal bags will be made

available to each household when they visit their local Group office. The metallic Ziploc style disposal bags should be used for pouring cooled cooking oil or grease into it then throw the filled bag away with the regular trash. Animal fats from beef and bacon or hydrogenated cottonseed oil products like Crisco or margarines tend to be liquid when hot then solidify when cooled. Improper disposal of solids like these as well as other liquid cooking oils can do major harm to the environment.

Other proper disposal methods for cooking oil and grease that are recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency include: Before washing pots, pans, and dishes: • DO wipe off oil and grease with dry paper towel. • DO scrape leftover food into the trash. • DO pour COOLED grease or oil into a container, seal and discard with regular garbage.

Questions answered about preparing for bed bug treatment in your home A-Class Pest Control Services, Inc. has been assigned to assist the cooperative with bed bug prevention. They have provided information that will help residents prepare for treatment as well as other safety measures to keep your home free of these pesky pests. Question: How do I prepare for bed bug treatment in my home? Answer: Any machine washable bedclothes like linens, covers, bedspreads and pillows that have come in contact with bed bugs should be removed and washed in hot water followed by a machine dryer. To avoid re-exposure, the items should be stored in bins or plastic bags. Personal items like shoes and clothing should also be stored in plastic bags.

Question: Will over-the-counter pesticides kill bed bugs? Answer: No. Over-the-counter pesticides that are on the market, including roach “bombs”, will only make bed bugs hide. Contact your Group Manager immediately if you suspect that bed bugs have invaded your home. The Group Manager will contact A-Class Pest Control Services who will work with you to eradicate the problem. Question: How do I properly dispose of bed bug infested furniture? ~Poetry Corner~ The Hand that Leads By Anthony Blake Washington, D.C., you need to wake up today House Representatives you think Guns are ok Guns in the public’s hands with bullets that go astray Guns constantly kill every day But it seems you want to have your own way Push has constantly been done to get rid of Guns, but as usual Congress you have no words to say Bullets can have anyone’s aim But you Congress are the finger pointing in blame Whatever happened to God’s Commandment. “Thou shall not kill” But the question being and answer stalled on still Guns will continue to destroy Human bodies are not decoys Guns are used as though they are toys Congress, please stand with the world who are against guns This is not some joke being a pun It’s the seriousness of all these unnecessary guns Guns are supposed to protect At least this is you Congress has stated being elect But you have turned your heads as a reject What would it take for Guns to disappear? Lives being loss, but how does one preserver I often pray that Congress will do the right thing Not so much fighting and being uptight

The mission is “Bullets to lose and lives to gain” This ongoing shootings just can’t remain Guns must go and just follow my flow Guns have their own any and the multitudes add up to many Fire one, aim to stop Fire two, the target could be you Fire three, Guns are getting into the wrong hands Guns that could fire on me, and no one would investigate to see How long and why wait? Congress and the world, this is no time to hesitate.

Fifty Years Ago By Ed Miller The grounds that flourish green With gardens all around us Were just fields of brown dirt. When it rained, inch deep mud. No supermarket in the mall Actually, no mall. A sixteen Wheeler Co-op grocery store For all our food necessities. For transportation no Q85s Catch the 111 at Parson’s Blvd. Then slog across Rochdale Through semi-darkness at night. The blessed powerhouse has Kept us in light but there were Blackouts years ago, when neighbors Lit candles to guide neighbors up stairs. These memories are nothing to The numerous new residents who Take for granted the wonderful. Place we call Rochdale Village. If you put your ear to the ground On a quiet summer evening You might hear braying horses Or hoofbeats of Jamaica Racetrack.

Happenings around Rochdale Village New traffic light on 137th Avenue provides extra layer of safety for the area By Susan Van Brackle

T

he New York City Department of Transportation recently installed an additional traffic light on 137th Avenue to support speed reduction efforts that are already in place. Even with one traffic light and multiple no U-Turn signs prominently displayed, it was not enough to mitigate incidences of vehicular injuries to pedestrians. The transverse picks up

traffic from busy roadways like Farmers Boulevard, Bedell Street and Guy R. Boulevard. Now, drivers along the route will encounter a traffic light that is positioned along the frontage of Public School 80’s property where it begins on 137th Avenue and, where it ends thus providing a protective no-speed zone. The additional traffic light also gives school bus drivers a chance to board and disembark children from their vehicles more securely.

The change in pace along the busy avenue is definitely noticeable. According to Jose Bayona, Deputy Press Secretary for the New York City Department of Transportation, “The study at 137th Avenue and 172nd St, adjacent to PS 80, was initiated based on requests from area residents to evaluate conditions on the corridor. The study was completed in June this year, and we approved the installation of a traffic signal to provide students, and all

pedestrians, another controlled crossing of 137th Avenue. The decision was based on the pedestrian volumes, including students, crossing 137th Ave and the traffic volumes on 137th Avenue. The signal was placed into operation on October 21st, 2015.” Assistant Principal Bernadette Locust of Public School 80 added, “The addition of these lights is definitely a speed deterrent. It slows down the traffic and keeps our children safe.”

Youth Planning Committee nets winners from RV Fencing program By Susan Van Brackle It was only a few months ago when the Uptown Fencing Club launched Rochdale’s first fencing program during the Youth Planning Committee’s End of School Jamboree. Since that time, fencing program participants have actively competed in the sport with great results. According to Rochdale’s Community Center Program Coordinator, Monica Mathelier, “Two of our fencing program participants have recently participated in two competitive

events. Anthony Leverett came in 1st place in the Public School Athletic League and he also came in 4th place at the Invitational Tournament. Calvin Smith came in 3rd Place in the Public School Athletic League and 1st Place in the Invitational Tournament.” Congratulations to these young athletes for a job well done! Help keep programs like these and others alive for our children by attending Youth Planning Committee meetings, chaired by board member Mario Turner, on Friday evenings at 7:00 p.m. in Community room 16 at the Center.

This past summer, while we were all on school break, some of the walls of P.S. 80 experienced a facelift. Tatoo artisans Richard Parker (above center) and Derrick Verley (not shown) from Think Before You Ink, added a culturally uplifting mural to the school’s facade. Well done gentlemen! Obituary Obituary Police Officer Randolph Holder Beloved Son * Brother * Mentor * Hero

P

olice Officer Randolph Holder died honorably in the line of duty after he succumbed to a gunshot wound to the head on Tuesday, October 20. The East Harlem shoot out occurred after Officer Holder and his partner confronted an armed robbery suspect on the FDR drive in upper Manhattan. Born in Guyana, this five-year veteran officer desired to follow in the footsteps of his father, great-uncle and grandfather, when he applied for the police academy. His path to becoming a Police Office included taking a position as a security guard until he joined the force in 2010.

Randolph Holder, 33, is the fourth NYPD officer killed in the line of duty in the last 11 months.

Officer Holder made a life for himself in Far Rockaway Queens where he lived with his fiance. They were about to close on their first home. Police Commissioner William Bratton spoke of Officer Holder’s exemplary police record. He paid the ultimate sacrifice doing the job he loved. Police Officer Holder was funeralized at The Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral Church and will be buried in Guyana. Officer Holder is the fourth policeman to be killed in the City of New York in the line of duty in the past 11 months. He is survived by his parents, cousins, his fiance, a wealth of friends, family and of course, his brothers in blue. Fidelis ad mortem.

End gun violence now. Please.
