rom the moment Rochdale’s own Olympian Dalilah Muhammad won the gold medal in Rio de Janeiro, plans were in the works to recognize the champion in southeast Queens. The Bulletin’s Facebook page was immediately swamped by a warm outpouring of ideas from friends and neighbors suggesting how to best celebrate Ms. Muhammad’s monumental accomplishment of being the first U.S. woman to win the 400m hurdles. Ultimately, it was a three float parade hosted by Senator James Sanders Jr.

(D-South Ozone Park), Assembly Member Vivian Cook (D-Jamaica), the Rochdale Village Board of Directors and Hope NYC Church in South Ozone Park that was the first of many recognition events leading up to the stellar 400 guest dinner given by the Board of Directors in honor of the gold medalist. The parade route began at Roy Wilkins Park on Merrick Boulevard, where Dalilah practiced early track and field drills, then ended on stage in front of the Rochdale Village Community Center. She arrived at Roy Wilkins in grand style via white stretch limousine. There was (Continued on page 11)

New kitchen upgrade set to roll out to cooperators by January 2017 By Susan Van Brackle

B

eginning in 2017, Rochdale Village residents will be offered a new, fully installed kitchen cabinet option for the first time since the inception of the cooperative. The original one dimensional cabinetry that is now in many apartments can be replaced with modernized paneled wood for anywhere from $2,200 for smaller kitchen formats to $2,900 for larger ones. The offering features additional amenities such as: • 100% plywood cabinet frame. • Warm mahogany hardwood doors. • Soft close hardware for doors and drawers. • European hidden hinges. • Beige flecked, 1-1/4” thick quartz countertop and backsplash. • Deep double bowled stainless steel sinks for

washing and drying. • Brushed stainless steel single gooseneck faucet. • Pull out, push button spray. • Wall prep, painting and removal of old cabinetry. Residents are encouraged to come out and take a look at the sample of the new cabinet design by visiting the Community Center lobby near the Club Lounge. Once full payment of the service is received by the cashier’s office, installation of the new kitchen will be scheduled for a mutually beneficial time with the Restorations department. Cabinets should be fully emptied and all obstacles removed from countertops in order to facilitate a streamlined install. Interested cooperators may visit the cashier’s window of the management office and prepay by check, money order or credit card. Look out for additional information about the cooperative’s newest amenity in future editions of the Rochdale Village Bulletin or call Restorations at 718.276.5700.

Rochdale’s Finances

Employees, Board Members and Cooperators in Rochdale work hard all year to keep this a great place to live. It is unfair to the entire community when misstatements are presented around election time. So here are a few clarifications: • The work you see all around you was budgeted in Rochdale’s 2 year budget; • No carrying charge increase is projected under the budget for 2017; • 2.5% carrying charge increases in 2014 and 2015 enable Rochdale to make payments on the $130 Million loan; and • The Financial Report shows

Rochdale had a surplus in 2016 of over $1.5 Million and over $53 Million in the bank.

Molly Maid housekeeping services procured for Rochdale community By Susan Van Brackle

R

equests for a dedicated maid service have come up as a topic of discussion in past board meetings. Residents asked that a provider be sourced to lend housekeeping assistance to elderly occupants, the disabled or those in need of an additional hand with home maintenance. Molly Maid, Sears Maid Services and Universal Maid were contacted for possible bulk pricing on cleaning services for Rochdale Village. Each vendor was given the same parameters by which pricing would be based e.g. threshold number of apartments, cleaning schedules, insurance requirements, etc. Of the three, Molly Maid provided the most comprehensive cleaning description, best pricing and the lowest threshold number. Molly Maid is a 30-year-old brand that specializes in housekeeping services, green cleaning techniques and even allergy reduction methods. And, Molly Maid agents are trained to work in concert with the desires of the homeowner to create a cleaning plan that can be followed in future visits. Moreover, each housekeeper with the franchise is bonded, insured and trained to arrive on time as scheduled. Residents will have the flexibility to schedule housekeeping services with Molly Maid on schedules that vary from every week, bi-monthly up to monthly. Services may also be performed

while you are away at work or present in your home depending on the consumer’s preference. Operators work Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Appointment cancellations should be notified within 72 hours of a scheduled service in order to avoid a small fee for having a missed appointment. Cleaning supplies and service equipment are provided by each Molly Maid professional so there’s no need to provide them. The service is pay as you go therefore settlement is due upon satisfactory completion and can be paid by cash, check or credit card. To get started with Molly Maid, call 718-276-5700 ext. 312 and reserve your first appointment.

t’s official. Rochdale Village now has a Dunkin’ Donuts/BaskinRobbins franchise operating inside Mall #2. A ribbon cutting ceremony took place on Friday, September 30 hosted by franchisee owner Scott Campbell, members from Rochdale’s Board of Directors, and dignitaries like Albee Mascall, Chief of Staff for Senator James Sanders, Jr. and Assembly Member Vivian E. Cook. Dunkin’ Donuts lovable mascot ‘Cuppy’ even made a grand appearance for the occasion. In preparation for Friday’s ribbon cutting, an open hiring event was held at the shop’s location on Saturday, September 10. As a result, 15 individuals

from the Rochdale Village community gained employment. From the time of the hiring fair to the store’s recent opening, trainees worked around the clock learning the registers, baking equipment and how to perform customer service processes that will prepare them for the onslaught of excited consumers looking forward to an alternative dining option. The store has ample seating for patrons that prefer to eat in rather than take their meal on the go. Guests will be happy to know that this Dunkin’ Donuts bakes its’ goods fresh daily on the premises. Rochdale’s Dunkin’ Donuts/Baskin-Robbins combo will be open seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

September marked a month of Olympic-sized celebrations at Rochdale (Contnued from Page 1)

an unbelievable crush of visitors that wanted to give well wishes and personal greetings to her. So much so that it made it almost impossible for Ms. Muhammad to disembark from the car. The audience was greeted warmly and in most cases was able to grab a selfie with her or an autograph. While at Roy Wilkins Park, Ms. Muhammad reflected on her early childhood beginnings in track and field and even jokingly picked up an impromptu race with Senator Sanders. Needless to say, he lost. Ms. Muhammad’s parade float was truly one befitting a princess. The design contained a huge gold crown as well as symbolic Olympic rings. With her parents Askia and Nadirah Muhammad by her side, she waved at the throngs of community residents in southeast Queens as the float made it down the parade route of Baisley Boulevard to Bedell Street then on to 137th avenue. When the flotilla passed Rochdale’s Power Plant on Bedell Street, a team of plant engineers bearing a congratulatory handwritten sign waved and shouted greetings as she proceeded. Youth ambassadors from George Taylor’s Novas Track Club lead Dalilah to the stage at the Community Center entrance where she received numerous accolades such as the Congressional

Achievement Award from Congressman Gregory Meeks’ office, a patriotic bouquet of red, white and blue roses and, the “Woman on Fire” award from the Rochdale Village Board of Directors. Children in the Community Center audience were able to pose questions to Dalilah where she shared that “This is where it started for me. I was seven years old when I joined the track team, when I was just a little girl running around Rochdale.” The Olympian Awards Dinner Days following the parade, tickets were offered for the Dalilah Muhammad Olympian Awards Dinner on the website Eventbrite.com. They were quickly snatched up by many who wanted the chance to celebrate her crowning achievement up close and personal. This high security event required rigid planning by the Board of Directors. A stringent guest list and wrist bands were added for an extra added level of security. Once inside the venue, guests enjoyed a red carpet experience complete with cocktails, photographs and touches of Brazilian fare as homage to the games in Rio de Janeiro. Celebrity master of ceremonies, Dr. Bob Lee from 107.5 WBLS, kept the night festive and moving smoothly.

The grand ballroom was decked out in symbolic American flags; red, white and blue settings and theatrical lighting with Olympic rings cast upon the walls. The event was a family affair as Askia Muhammad, Dalilah’s dad, delivered the opening prayer while individual members of the Board bestowed additional gifts from the community. Notable highlights of the evening were the Board’s presentation to Ms. Muhammad of the first ever “Key to Rochdale Village”, the airing of a brief dedication video entitled “Qualities of an Olympic Gold Medalist” recapping her historic win at the games in Rio and Dalilah’s walk throughout the ballroom to meet and greet guests that took time to celebrate with her. While addressing the audience after the parade, Dalilah stated, “I want to just give back to my community and just thank Rochdale. Thank you so much for your support. It would not have been possible without you.” (Photo credit: Hughe Williams)

ot even a chilly, rain soaked Saturday morning could dash the high energy exuded at Rochdale’s first Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk on September 24. The event was hosted by members of the Board of Directors’ Community Relations Committee, Senior Citizens’ Committee and enthusiastic volunteers. The group organized, decorated and pushed to get the message out in Jamaica, Queens about the importance of supporting friends, family and neighbors that are faced with this dreaded illness. DJ TNT was on hand to keep the mood and music light as the contingent of walkers gathered for registration at 9:00 a.m. in front of the Community Center.

Before embarking on the march, some participants shared experiences of hope for those that are currently challenged by breast cancer, have survived it or personally know someone struggling with it. The walking route took participants throughout Rochdale’s grounds and into each apartment circle. Volunteers were assigned in each apartment group to hand out water to parched members as they progressively made their way around the complex and back towards the front of the Center. Many participants walked with chest signs bearing the names of friends and relatives stricken by breast cancer that they were walking in memory of. Please continue to support this community’s committees as there are future plans for annual events like these and many others.

~Poetry Corner~ Why We Celebrate Columbus Day By Ed Miller In 1492, he set sail, it’s true History books tell me and you. East Indies is what he found Although he was, for India bound. His purpose, you may wonder, “His king and queen needed plunder!” What if he had just turned around Never told what he had found? New World nations might be today Evolving naturally in every way Like the Iroquois Confederacy Seminole, Apache and Cherokee. What about the Mayan nation The Inca and Aztec civilization? Everything lost because of Columbus So why the parades, why the fuss? As Governor, accused of tyranny A foreboding of things to be, like The planting of vast cotton fields

Importing Africans, to increase their yields Cannot turn back the clock of history. Of making him a hero, still a mystery It was a mistake, his finding this land So why celebrate? I don’t understand. (Well, maybe…no school, no work!)

A Senior Citizen’s Virtue By Anthony Blake A time in my life to live I have worked hard all my life in give No time for aches and pain There is no reason that I should continue to complain Adventure is waiting for me outside the door It’s all about get out and explore Because I am a Senior Citizen I will not be ignored I have achieved wisdom and understanding Because I am experienced I can withstand Don’t even think about calling me old I am a Senior Citizen who is bold Don’t tell me to do as I am told

Young people recognize a Senior Citizen’s years It’s our wisdom and understanding of encouragement in how you preserver Who says because I am a Senior Citizen I don’t fit in Our motto is step out and let inspiration begin I may have gray hairs, can barely walk, Aches and pain and eye sight may not good As a Senior Citizen we are determined moving in could However, young people you need understanding in should Obtain knowledge with thirst for education in would Young people, your day will come Old age will be your some So let the truth be told Young people listen up, as your youth will become old Don’t take a Senior Citizen for being weak Don’t take our speech for being beak We have the knowledge that you seek.
