News from the President January 24th, 2013

H

appy New Year members and friends! It is an honor and a pleasure to write my first letter as your new president of Rochester Area Builders in Las Vegas, while attending the largest home show in the world, The International Builders Show. I’m excited for our local Home Show coming up in just a few short weeks and hope to see all of you there!

The new year is always a good time to reflect on what has been and what will come. No doubt some of you have made New Year’s resolutions…hopefully including becoming more involved in RAB! We have amazing members who have stepped forward to lead RAB, but we always have room for more! You are the foundation of RAB! I encourage all of you to reach out to a committee chair and get involved whether you are a builder or an associate member, we have opportunities for you!

January BAM Update ...........................14

The same determination it takes to build a house is what it takes to build a remarkable association. Both can be daunting at times, but envisioning the final product carries the builder to the end. To build well, a master plan is the key. Without a plan and a strong foundation, it does not matter how pretty the exterior is, or how fancy the accessories are, the house will collapse. The master plan must also have a wish list, because occasionally you have to remodel to keep things fresh. Routine maintenance must be done so the house will not fall into disrepair. With that said, I have great hopes that RAB will continue the strong tradition of working and improving such things as the annual Home Show, Showcase of Homes and the excellent education seminars offered to our members. I feel quite lucky coming into this position after the strong leadership of our past president, Jennifer Maas. However, I am sure Jennifer would agree that everything RAB accomplished was a team effort by RAB board members, committee volunteers, and a wonderful staff! A heartfelt thank you to all of you for your dedication and service!

Project Birdhouse ........................... 22-23

Only by working together as a team can we continue to achieve. As the old saying goes, many hands make for light work…let’s build this house together!! May the New Year bring you peace and prosperity,

Jean DeWitz

On Wednesday December 10th members from around the state gathered for the annual Builders Association of Minnesota (BAM) board meeting and the Awards Dinner and Farewell Party for Pam Perri. Thank to all who attended, sponsored and helped make the day a success. During the board meeting, a budget for 2013 was approved and the board discussed several important issues including the fight against mandatory fire sprinklers, the Legal Action Fund, the new draft energy code, and preparation for the Minnesota 2013 legislative session. The evening’s events began with a cocktail reception followed by dinner and presentation of the 2012 BAM Awards hosted by Keith Kylmala. A big congratulations goes out to the 2012 award winners.    

Rising Star Award – Sam Horn, Brainerd Savings and Loan Associate of the Year – Gerry Traut, Xcel Energy Remodeler of the Year – Todd Bjerstedt, McDonald Remodeling Builder of the Year – KC Chermak, Pillar Homes

Following the awards ceremony, 2013 BAM President Chad Kompelien of Mike Kompelien Custom Homes was sworn in by his father Mike Kompelien. Chad’s wife, daughter, son and mother were also present to witness the installation. Chad gave a gave a powerful speech after being sworn in stating, “The Builders Association of Minnesota is not just the watch dog for its builder and associate members, we also look out for all current and future homeowners... Together we will make this industry the best in Minnesota.” He introduced some of his priorities for the year including taking fire sprinklers through the administrative law judge hearing process, educating new lawmakers at the State Capitol, and helping BAM’s new executive vice president transition in and get out to each local association. Rounding out the evening was a presentation made by Kathe Ostrom, with the help of nine past BAM presidents, to thank Pam Perri for 11 years of service to the associaiton and industry as BAM’s executive vice president. The past presidents in attendance to toast - and roast - Perri included Tom Walsky, Curt Swanson, Jeff Schoenwetter, Jim Gander, Kathe Ostrom, Monte Mraz, Mike Gohman, Todd Bjerstedt, and 2012 BAM President Keith Kylmala. Each spoke of their experience working with Perri celebrating her dedication, determination, and political acumen and, of course, a few stories were shared as well. It was a celebratory night for BAM. Thank you again to Perri for her leadership. We look forward to Chad’s presidency in 2013 and congratulate the 2012 BAM Award winners.

January 2013

This This year’s legislative session started January 8th and it must conclude by May 20th according to the constitution. With 64 new legislators the pace of session will undoubtedly start slow. BAM will be working hard to educate the legislature about the industry’s issues and communicate that a healthy housing industry means a healthy economy and jobs. The past few years BAM has built positive relationships with both Democrats and Republicans, rural and metro, across the state that understand our priorities. During the election season, BAM put together a list of housing-friendly candidates on both sides of the aisle and targeted those individuals for BAM-PAC donations. Of those candidates, 31 of our 37 were elected. For the first time since 1990, Democrats are in control of the House, the Senate, and the governor’s office, and so our relationships at the Capitol will be more important than ever. It will be especially important to have a big showing at Builder Day at the Capitol January 30th. Mark your calendars and plan to attend. Codes In addition to the legislative session, BAM is fighting a mandate of fire sprinklers in single-family construction in the upcoming residential building code. The legislature voted overwhelmingly to remove the mandate from the code in 2011 and 2012, but was vetoed by the Governor citing homeowner and fire fighter safety. It was also voted out of the code twice by the Department of Labor and Industry’s advisory code committee. However, the mandate was unfortunately put in the

recent draft code by the department at a 4,500 square foot trigger. The code draft is slated to be published by the Department of Labor and Industry in March after which BAM will fight the mandate in the Administrative Law Judge process. All new codes in Minnesota are enacted at the same time, and currently they are slated to go into effect in late 2013 with a beginning enforcement date of six months later - in the spring of 2014. Get Involved We will be calling on you to get involved by contacting your legislators. We will need to continue cultivating your relationships with your legislators - it will be extremely important this session. Builder Day at the Capitol, January 30th. This is the day for all BAM members to come together from across the state to deliver our message to our legislators. It’s important that we make a big statement, so be sure to attend. Together our voices are stronger. More information and registration is available online at bamn.org/events. This Week at BAM - Featuring news from the capitol and association, This Week at BAM is our e-newsletter with the latest industry updates. Be sure we have your email address to stay in-the-know. Surveys - We will be sending surveys when we need your feedback, opinions and data on legislative and regulatory issues. Stay tuned for more throughout the session and be sure to get involved.

Your Proximity to Impaired Waterways:

Not as Far as You May Think

Though it may appear that your worksite is far from a waterway, the fact of the matter is that all of Rochester is in close proximity to surface waters. Maintaining proper erosion and sediment control practices on your worksite will help prevent polluted storm water from entering area waterways. Our lakes, rivers, and wetlands help make Rochester one of the nation’s most livable communities – Help Keep it Clean! Www.RochesterAreaBuilders.com January/February 2013 | 15

OCTOBER 12, 1953. Rochester Area Builders is chartered as an affiliated Local Chapter of the National Association of Home Builders. What else was happening in 1953? •

Korean War ends.

Ian Fleming introduces the world to James Bond with publication of first Bond Novel Casino Royale.

The movie “Shane” premiers.

Future James Bond, Pierce Brosnan is born.

The unemployment rate was 2.9%.

The average cost of new home was $9,550.

A gallon of gas was 20 cents.

And a color TV cost about the same as today, $1,175. (That makes sense, the shows are all the same, too!)

Our next newsletter will feature conversations and anecdotes by some of the members from our first years’ in existence. Until then; $60 gift card from Beetles to the first person that answers this question: Where can you find the original signed charter from 1953? Our “committed” members will know the answer.
