Celebrating Growth & Innovation in Greater Rochester
The 2022 Greater Rochester Chamber Top 100 Awards represents the 36th annual celebration of Greater Rochester’s fastest-growing privatelyowned companies. The growth being celebrated tonight represents the culmination of the hard work of nearly 29,000 employees in our region for these 100 companies that enabled them to grow, innovate, and produce the outstanding products and results they each do.
Over the past several years, we have all had to navigate a constantly changing landscape of regulations, economic conditions, and more. Despite this, our business community continued to thrive and do what Rochester has always done best – innovate. While other regions and companies have struggled to adapt to these changes, the Greater Rochester region has continued to grow and prosper because innovation is in the fabric of our region.
Rochester has long been a hub for innovation across industries, going back to the 1800s as America’s first boomtown. Companies and entrepreneurs today have capitalized on that history and built upon the pioneering spirit that is ever-present in our region to bring continuing success to the region and transforming Greater Rochester into a technological hub receiving national attention. As we enter 2023, it is important to celebrate our history and the innovation that has created the business climate that has enabled the successes of each company here today.
Since 1987, the Greater Rochester Chamber Top 100 awards have tracked and celebrated this growth and this year, despite the challenges and changes the past year have brought, our Top 100 companies this year had a record-breaking combined revenue, topping $15 billion for the first time. This is a testament to the Greater Rochester region’s unique ability to turn challenges into opportunities. This year’s Top 100 list of companies represent in a new era of technological prosperity in Greater Rochester’s history with nearly one in eight companies being on our list for the first time.
Each firm on our list today has had incredible successes in the past year that deserve to be celebrated tonight. And each individual success for each individual company compounds to create unparalleled successes for our region as a whole. With each company on our list’s wins, we all win by continuing to uplift our community, drive healthy competition, and breed innovation.
Despite all of the changes that have happened over the past several years, one thing has stayed constant: the resilience in the Greater Rochester region and the innovative nature of businesses in our community. Tonight, we are here to celebrate this and look to the future.
The annual Greater Rochester Chamber Top 100 ceremony is the most exciting celebration of the year for the business community in our region. Each year for the past 36 years, we have brought together the top business leaders in our area to celebrate their individual successes as well as the success of the broader Greater Rochester community. Our region has an unmatched entrepreneurial spirit of innovation that continues to help our region thrive and earn national recognition.
This year has continued to reinforce the importance of high-quality talent. Each of the companies being recognized today is enabled to succeed because of their talented employees. These companies are not only developing their internal talent to enable their success, but also to are bringing high-quality talent to our region from around the world and are continuing to enable innovation and growth. Tonight is a true party to celebrate these teams of hard-working employees and give them the much needed recognition they deserve.
The 2022 Greater Rochester Top 100 companies employ nearly 29,000 people locally and over 43,000 around the nation. The revenue that was brought to our region by these companies had an immeasurable impact on the revitalization of so many communities and individual lives. This region would not be the same vibrant, diverse, talented community it is without the economic impact and investment of these companies. The successes of these businesses directly correlate with the successes of individuals in our region. Hearing from top companies each year serves as an incredible inspiration and keeps each of us pushing ourselves and our teams the best we can be day after day. Companies such as the ones on our Top 100 List today help put our region on the map and continue to help the Greater Rochester/Finger Lakes region grow.
We also want to extend the largest thank you to all of tonight’s sponsors who make this exciting and lively event possible. Thank you to ESL Federal Credit Union for their continued support as our presenting sponsor, M&T Bank for sponsoring our reception, and KPMG for their continued partnership in tabulating results. Additional thanks go to premier sponsors, Delta, Foundry, Paychex, and Waste Harmonics, our other partners, 13WHAM ABC, Fox Rochester, and CW Rochester, Audacy, CMI AV, and Rochester Riverside Convention Center, and all of our corporate and supporting sponsors.
The outstanding companies on the Greater Rochester Chamber Top 100 list should be immensely proud of their continued successes and growth. Their growth benefits not only the company, but also fosters personal and professional growth for all of their stakeholders and employees. The Greater Rochester/Finger Lakes region has nowhere to go up in the coming years thanks to the individuals and companies we are honoring this evening. Thank you for all you do for your employees, customers, and this community.
Enjoy celebrating your success in 2022, and get ready for Top 100 2023!

Emerging Stronger Together
We are thrilled to be together again to celebrate the achievements of the 2022 Greater Rochester Chamber Top 100. While the mix of companies continues to evolve, the total overall revenue for the 2022 Top 100’s most recently completed fiscal year approximated $15.5 billion compared to $14.5 billion for the 2021 cohort – an increase of nearly 7%. The measurement period for this listing (2019 through 2021) includes a significant portion of the pandemic and, as may be expected, many of the stories behind the numbers reflect how our region is seizing new or changing opportunities in the marketplace.
For example, there were 32 companies ranked in the 2022 Top 100 that were not included on the list in the prior year (including 7 of the top 20). Further to that point, only 13 companies in the 2022 Top 100 have made the list each of the past 5 years and even fewer (3) have made it each of the past 10 years. This demonstrates what our business leaders have often boasted about the health of Greater Rochester’s business community – there is great depth, the competition is fierce, and staying on top requires remarkable consistency.
In terms of industry representation, manufacturing (+4) and service (+4) companies outmaneuvered tech (-5) and construction (-3) businesses on the 2022 Top 100 list. However, technology companies comprised 3 of the top 10 which shows that all industries flourished during the measurement period.
Finally, one of our favorite Top 100 metrics we look at each year to gauge how companies in the Greater Rochester area feel about their success is “nominations received”. We are pleased to report that nominations increased over 15% from the prior year. The future is indeed bright for our business community, and we wish all continued success in their endeavors.
Congratulations on your outstanding performance.
We extend a special thank you to the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce for teaming with KPMG for the past 36 years. We look forward to honoring area companies that make significant contributions to the Rochester community for many years to come.

Our business is retail technology. Our greatest asset is our people.
We are proud to be among Rochester’s Top 100 Fastest Growing Companies.
1. What does it mean to you to be a leading woman owned company in the greater Rochester community?
The weight of starting and growing a business, taking calculated risks and building a trusted team is immense at times. To be recognized as a Greater Rochester Chamber Top 100 company is one of those fulfilling reminders, amid the daily chaos of business, that it’s working and worth it. We have such brilliant, driven leaders in this community – and to be recognized among them is an honor.
2. How have you overcome challenges of being a women owned company?
To be honest, most of our challenges have been overcome due to a collaborative management team, smart but decisive decision making and not allowing ourselves to panic over problems or issues. My mind automatically shifts to - “how do we solve it and keep moving forward.” We have that same mindset when helping clients with their life changing events, so that mentality and approach carries over to running the firm.
We are very appreciative of our hardworking, focused and dedicated staff, who consistently go above and beyond to help our customers achieve their goals. This recognition is only possible because of the combined contributions of the entire organization.

JOHN BETLEM HEATING & COOLING, INC. has been meeting the home comfort needs of the Rochester, N.Y. area for more than 80 years. The company, which was started in the 1940s by John Betlem and spans three generations, has grown to serve the city of Rochester, Monroe County and the surrounding areas. Dedicated team members and a loyal customer base have both been paramount to the company’s success.
John Betlem started the company in 1941, and John Betlem Heating & Cooling, Inc. grew from there. Today, they remain a family-owned-andoperated company, and serve all of Rochester and Monroe County, as well as parts of Wayne, Ontario, Genesee, Livingston and Orleans Counties. As a complete HVAC, electrical, and home performance company, John Betlem offers a number of services, from repairing and installing furnaces, generators and AC units, to performing home energy assessments, to offering preventive maintenance programs.
Currently, John Betlem Heating & Cooling caters primarily to the residential market. They focus mainly on the replacement of pre-existing units as opposed to new construction. The company currently employs 70 and operates a fleet of 56 vehicles. Technicians are highly trained at the John Betlem Institute, an on-site educational center that provides apprenticeship training. Robert Betlem and his children own John Betlem Heating & Cooling.
The company specializes in designing, engineering, and installing complete comfort systems for owners of existing homes and buildings.
They take special pride in the craftsmen they train and employ–a fact customers notice immediately in the attitude and integrity technicians bring to the job site. The entire company works hard to make the customer experience both hassle-free and enjoyable.
Kathy Betlem said that the company has built their business based on a strong mission statement, one in which the customer is the primary focus. “’Whatever it takes’ is both our philosophy and our call to action. Success begins and ends there,” Betlem said. “With all things being equal, it is the human element of our business that separates us from the competition. It is the single-most important component for delivering superior customer service, and the one we have the greatest ability to affect.”
As a successful business, one of the most important things John Betlem Heating & Cooling, Inc. does is to give back to the community. Each month, the company participates in a monthly charity draw, where they randomly draw the name of a local charity and then donate to that cause. In the past, their monthly charity draw has helped JDRF, GiGi’s Playhouse, and Wounded Warriors. They are an active supporter of The Shepherd Home, Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester and Equicenter. Additionally, the company supports such community organizations as the Rotary, and sponsors local racing, hockey and baseball teams.

THREE+ONE
As a Top 100 Award recipient, three+one® stands out among the business community in Greater Rochester. The Rochester, New York-based financial-technology company firm not only emulates a strong entrepreneurial spirit in the region, but also serves as a leader in business and public service throughout the country. three+one offers innovative liquidity-data and cash-management solutions that deliver better financial outcomes for public entities and higher Ed institutions—and, in turn, for those they serve.
Co-founders, Joseph Rulison and Peter Forsgren know well that these successes of three+one are not just the result of good financial strategy or innovation, but of recognizing that their company is made up of very talented individuals. In noting the value and deliberateness of the firm’s talent, Rulison states, “We see ourselves as a total team. We like to look at ourselves as a jigsaw puzzle. Each team member is a separate piece that brings certain unique talents. While our members may look completely different in talents and skills, when combined, they make up an incredibly beautiful picture.”
Perhaps the most defining contributory factor to fostering growth from within is that all team members become owners of the company, at no cost to them, leading to strong internal culture and an exceptionally high retention rate. As member-owners, the team sees themselves and their colleagues as the personification of every interaction with the firm’s clients. “We’re literally talking about other people’s money,” Rulison said. “And not just some portfolio with a faceless account number, these are public funds belonging to taxpayers like you, me, and everyone else we know.”
For three+one, innovation is embedded in the firm’s culture and reflects the genesis of the company as a financial technology pioneer in liquidity management. When asked to elaborate on how three+one continues to carve out the time and space for innovative ideation and implementation despite the rigors of running the day-to-day of a firm with an national presence, SVP Garrett Macdonald reflected on the ethos that permeates throughout the company, stating, “Don’t isolate innovation, but socialize ideas across the organization. Be intentional about creating a time and forum to present ideas.”
three+one saw an underserved marketplace in the sectors of public entities and higher Ed institutions. Specifically, they knew their clients needed to better understand the role of liquidity and how to view and capture all aspects of cash. To do so, three+one needed to be seen as a positive disrupter in the public financial marketplace. To that end, they created a core value for the company—to exceed expectations for clients, employees, and stakeholders.
Rulison explained, “Vision, belief, passion, and determination in making a difference to the public entities and communities we serve; that’s the foundation
three+one® is built on. It is in our company’s DNA and our deeply felt social consciousness to be committed to the financial benefit of public entities and higher Ed institutions, no matter their size or location. We are as unique as a company as we are as a team.”
The success of three+one and the financial benefits provided to their public sector and higher Ed clients can best be measured with a singular, yet powerful, metric: the data solutions and liquidity management of their principal technology platform, cashVest, has resulted in over $650 Million delivered back to communities and their stakeholders by maximizing the value of their cash.
As a company, three+one is just getting started. “We will not feel complete until we have reached every local community in the United States and beyond,” Rulison said. “three+one® is in a unique niche that offers great value to our clients and prospects.”
That privileged relationship with clients, and by extension the communities they serve, cemented into a lasting bond because three+one saw an underserved marketplace in the sectors of public entities and higher Ed institutions. Macdonald was quick to point out, “First and foremost, we always tell our team that people don’t care what you know until they know you care. This is paramount to everything we do, and it is why we created a client advisory group to steer innovation towards solving practical solutions through the inclusion of client and prospect experiences in discussions and programming. If we don’t show our customers that we care about them before sharing what we know about our technology or solutions, our relationship will be based on a business transaction and will be short-lived.”
That resulting longevity in client retention across all relationships is a testament to this ethos as well as the results achieved for partners across the spectrum. With a portfolio that includes public sector entities and higher Ed institutions across the country, with budgets ranging from the tens-of-millions to billions of dollars, cashVest by three+one has proven universal application and ability to help these partners earn and save more money even in the wake of turbid market conditions.
Speaking about the continued evolution of three+one and how the technology and business sectors will view cashVest, and also how they will continue to lead at home and nationally, Macdonald stressed, “Being recognized globally as the premier public sector and higher Ed financial data resource is an important benchmark, but more than anything we want to make a difference in each community and organization we serve. It is our goal to reach over $1.0 billion in new savings and income for these communities by the end of 2022, and over $10.0 billion by 2025.”

OPTIMAX Q & A
What does it mean for (your company) to land on the 2022 Greater Rochester Chamber Top 100 list?
This is of course an honor to be named to the top 100 list that distinguishes so many companies for their growth and success. Optimax has been privileged to be on this list for a number of years and this affirms our continued growth at a rapid pace that makes us proud of our company, being part of the Rochester business community, and most of all, honored by this recognition.
To what do you contribute your company’s sustained growth and success?
For us, our success can be found in our mission – customer success and employee prosperity. These are the two pillars that the company was built on and continues to grow and be successful by.
It is our people and culture that help drive innovation and success, and our customers that are part of the booming optics and photonics industry that continues to flourish. Optics play a significant role in our everyday lives and Optimax focuses on the high-end delivery of optics that go into applications that are challenging and require manufacturing but also an engineering skill set, which is a unique service we provide.
What are some challenges your business is facing, and what have you done to adapt?
Continued growth can be a challenge, both from finding the right people to hire and growing from a small to mid-sized business. Optimax started in a barn more than 30 years ago with just a handful of employees and today we are more than 400 employees in a 120,000 sq. ft. facility that is continuing to expand both with headcount and facility size.
We see this growth as our greatest challenge and success as we continue to expand and move forward into the future.
FAHEEM MASOOD President and CEO
On behalf of ESL, I would like to congratulate this year’s Top 100 honorees. You have achieved extraordinary results that continue to demonstrate the strength and resiliency of our business community in the Greater Rochester region.
We are fortunate to have organizations like the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce that serve as a resource in supporting and advocating for our business community at every level. This is certainly one level of support and collaboration that helps businesses learn and grow in their trajectory.
As we recognize and celebrate the achievements of this year’s honorees, it’s important to reflect on some of the reasons that contribute to the growth of every company. We live and work in a community with a talented workforce. Our region is continuously carving out a name for itself as a technology and science hub when it comes to software engineering, cybersecurity, green energy, and research in various fields. Meanwhile, our education and healthcare sectors continue to be industry pillars in our community. Our expertise is vast and varied, and a testament to our strong workforce.
The people of Greater Rochester have always been and continue to be our community’s greatest asset. Without them, the accomplishments in our business community (and beyond) would not be possible. Through our workforce, we are fortunate to witness a level of innovation that is often recognized at both a national and global level. It is impressive to know that our region ranks #1 in the number of patents per 1,000 workers (US Patent and Trade Office) and #1 for Best Place to Live in the Northeast After COVID-19 (Business Insider).
The coronavirus pandemic prompted significant changes in the workplace when many businesses had to pivot to remote operations, implement new systems and technologies and adjust to entire new ways of doing business. As a business community, we adapted and succeeded. Businesses are the engine of our economy, and the businesses in our community, especially those on the Top 100, are the fuel that makes that engine run.
Time and again, our community demonstrates its’ ability to unite for a greater purpose. We have done a good job of coming together and supporting each other through the challenges we have faced. Working together as a team is vital in achieving our goals. It is through compassion, empathy, understanding, and collaboration that we can meet and surpass expectations while also being able to adapt to anticipated and unexpected changes we often experience in the business world.
As we continue to move forward from the pandemic, we know that change is inevitable and new trends in the business world will come and go or evolve over time. We applaud all of you on the Greater Rochester Top 100 for your ability to meet and rise above this challenge. The fortitude you have shown, and the resulting growth only serves to strengthen our business community and the Greater Rochester community at large.
This night is for all of you to recognize and celebrate your success. Thank you for all you do to help Greater Rochester, our businesses, and our people thrive.

YOUR SUCCESS RAISES THE STANDARD
Some might say they’ve eased into a “new normal.” But not here. In the Greater Rochester region, our leaders, businesses and community are beyond average. You’re doing things differently, no doubt about it. Instead of settling, you’re striving. Instead of making do, you’re making moves to help our community thrive — pushing limits and pursuing better for the people and places we call home.
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE GREATER ROCHESTER CHAMBER TOP 100
