A message from our Patron Neges o Sir Karl Jenkins
It is with great pleasure, as Patron, to be in a position to be able to welcome you to the fifth annual Swansea International Jazz Festival. Following the success of the first 4 events, Dave Cottle has again worked tirelessly behind the scenes in making this an event of which Swansea can be proud and the biggest to date! We are extremely grateful for the generous financial support given to the event from the Arts Council of Wales and City & County of Swansea Council and the sponsorship from Prescott Jones Insurance Solutions. Plus support from many local businesses, the University of Wales Trinity St David at the Dylan Thomas Centre, the Dylan Thomas Theatre and
4
the many venues around the Maritime Quarter for staging events. The hard work of Swansea Jazzland committee and members in promotion and disseminating publicity as well as their assistance over the festival weekend. We are hoping to build on the success of previous years to create an event that will continue to be an annual event in the UK jazz calendar. Enjoy some great music!

Welcome from Dave Cottle Neges o Dave Cottle
Welcome to the fifth Swansea International Jazz Festival.
A warm welcome to the 2018 Swansea International Jazz Festival! This year we have 16 venues hosting 55 events all located around the Swansea Maritime Quarter. This fabulous backdrop provides an excellent location for the festival and of course there are plenty of accessible car parks and a wide range of hotels and guest houses in the area plus both Swansea Bus and Railway stations are close by. Thanks to the financial support from our sponsors and partners we have musicians and bands coming to Swansea from USA, South America & Europe along with many of the best British Jazz ensembles. Please do purchase tickets for the top shows, as we do need to balance the books and wouldn‘t be able to offer such a huge free fringe festival without selling tickets for the main concerts! The ticketed shows offer a wide variety of different styles and something for everyone and there is plenty of great talent to enjoy on the free fringe events spread across the Maritime Quarter plus our new venue at St Mary’s Church. There is so much great music to look forward to and if we don‘t bump into each other over the weekend please do come along to Swansea Jazzland where we continue to present the best of International and UK based jazz musicians every Wednesday night in Swansea.
Have a great weekend…
Dave Cottle
Artistic Director

Pete Long BIG BAND
Benny Goodman
at Carnegie Hall Concert
Regarded as the finest jazz spectacle ever, the Benny Goodman Carnegie Hall concert of 1938 is revered by big band fans, and recordings of that historic event continue to still sell today on vinyl and CD. It‘s thanks to Benny that jazz was elevated from the dance halls, clubs and dives to the concert platform. If you love big bands this show is a must for you. The repertoire is as refreshing today as it was in 1938, and Pete Long and the All-Star Goodmen Orchestra bring it alive with their outstanding musicianship. In keeping with the original concert Pete uses Benny Goodman‘s favoured clarinet reeds and drummer Richard Pite plays an exact replica of Gene Krupa‘s kit using Gene‘s actual cymbals and brushes. The entire repertoire from the 1938 concert is featured, including Don‘t Be That Way, Sing Sing Sing, I Got Rhythm, If Dreams Come True and Springtime in the Rockies. Long, who has played with Jools Holland and Ronnie Scott‘s Big Band, will have a big band that includes singer Joan Viskant and musicians Nathan Bray, Anthony Kerr and Richard Pite as they pay tribute to such a landmark concert.

Two of Britain’s best jazz singers get together to celebrate the music of the stars who inspired them, with a collection of their favourite tunes from the heyday of the greatest women singers of the twentieth century. Lee Gibson (‘lights up any song with her musicality’ – The Independent) and Tina May (‘handles the classics as the gems they still are’ – The Guardian) are two of Britain‘s best known, best loved and most highly regarded jazz singers. They come together in this dynamic and vibrant programme to celebrate the music of the Jazz Divas who inspired them – a programme that has been specially created for this year’s Swansea International Jazz Festival. They will be joined by British jazz trumpet legend Bruce Adams. Expect great solos and some sharp duets, with the backing of the all-swinging Dave Cottle Trio.

JIM ROTONDI QUARTET
Clearly, (Rotondi) emerges as one of the best of the post-Hubbard generation - Chris Hovan, allaboutjazz.com (His) solos are a near-perfect amalgam of power, finesse and logic. - David A. Orthmann, allaboutjazz.com If I had to pick one trumpeter to watch over the next decade, it would be Jim Rotondi.Don Berryman, www.jazzpolice.com Rotondi has the passion and focus to find a place for the music in the new millennium. The New Yorker There isn‘t a better trumpet player in New York City than Jim Rotondi, for whom the word versatile is inadequate. - Bob Belden
Trumpeter Jim Rotondi has been a major figure in the world of jazz for over 30 years, both in New York and on the international scene. His sound, soul, and sense of swing have been in demand as leader and sideman. A Montana native raised in a musical family, Jim started with the piano at eight years old and switched to trumpet at age twelve. Later Jim heard a recording of Clifford Brown and he was on his way. A product of the prestigious University of North Texas, Jim won first place in the 1984 International Trumpet Guild’s Jazz Trumpet Competition. After relocating to New York, Jim toured and recorded with a host of jazz luminaries, including the big bands of Ray Charles, Lionel Hampton, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Bob Mintzer, and the small groups of Charles Earland, Lou Donaldson, Curtis Fuller and Joe Chambers. Jim currently leads two of his own groups, a quintet featuring vibraphonist Joe Locke in the front line, as well as an electric group, Full House, which also features pianist David Hazeltine. As a founding member of the collective sextet One For All, which features a front line of Eric Alexander sax and Steve Davis trombone, as well as Hazeltine, drummer Joe Farnsworth and bassist John Webber in the rhythm section. This all-star group is featured in the June 2009 issue of Jazztimes magazine.

Prima Jr. and his explosive band are bringing the feel-good classics of Louis Prima Sr. into the 21st century. It’s going to be a night of boisterous, rollicking music that will blow you away and have you dancing in the aisles!
Louis Prima Jr. is the youngest child and only son of musician and entertainer Louis Prima. His mother Gia Maione began performing with his father in 1962. She taught Louis Jr. to play the drums at 5 years old. He grew up on the outskirts of Las Vegas, on his father‘s golf course, Fairway to the Stars. When the Prima family moved to New Orleans, he learned piano. In school, Prima took band class and told his mother he wanted to play trumpet. He continued playing through high school, and cites his band directors Bruce Cullings and William Mac McMosley as major influences in his life.

JAMES TAYLOR QUARTET
For a quarter of a century, the James Taylor Quartet have set the standard for the coolest sounds in funky acid jazz. On dozens of mighty albums and at their legendary gigs at home and around the world, they’ve quietly become a byword for distinguished British creativity.
THE MUSICIANS
James Taylor : Hammond & Vocals Mark Cox : Guitar Andrew McKinney : Bass Pat Illingworth : Drums
But the great artists never let the grass grow under their feet, and now James Taylor’s impassioned musical curiosity has led to the most ambitious and exciting project in JTQ’s illustrious history. Allow us to introduce the new album ‘Closer To The Moon,’ the like of which you’ve never heard — because in addition to their infectious trademark stylings, the quartet have brought together the worlds of jazz and classical music in a brilliant and unexpected marriage. From the moment the count in at the top of ‘Tick Tock’ until the conclusion of the typically atmospheric, filmic title tune, ‘Closer To The Moon’ is a unique listening experience and a career landmark. Not to mention that it sports James’ first-ever lead vocal performance on ‘Closer To You’ and the little matter of a Beethoven piana sonata.
