THE ALAN BARNES OCTET ‘REQUIEM’
Alan Barnes, Pat McCarthy, Josie Moon
Requiem brings together the creative imagination of poet Josie Moon and the dynamic composition talents of Alan Barnes and Pat McCarthy. The music is arranged by Alan for a stellar line-up of international artists: Dave Green, Gilad Atzmon, Mark Nightingale, Sebastiaan De Krom, Dean Masser and Neil Yates. It is a bold and challenging work that examines the impact of conflict on individuals across a century. A moving but ultimately uplifting and soulful work, which invites the audience to both remember the history of conflict and resolve to do better in the future. Author, poet, composer, musician and singer, the very talented Josie Moon brings as much to the reading of her work as to the writing of it. Her poetry brings to life and compliments the music of Requiem.
Thursday 3rd October 8.30pm | £10.00
NICOLAS MEIER WORLD GROUP | PEACEFUL TOUR
Demi Garcia on percussions Richard Jones on violin Kevin Glasgow on bass Nicolas Meier on acoustic guitar and glissentar
In just a few short years, UK-based guitarist Nicolas Meier has carved a reputation out as one of the UK’s most original and uniquely talented guitarists. Drawing from a love of Turkish, Eastern & Middle Eastern music, Flamenco, Tango and more -- all mixed with jazz -- Meier is one of the rising stars in a vibrant British jazz scene, but his versatility and musical fluency extends well beyond that ... so much so, that his considerable talents drew the attention of rock guitar legend, Jeff Beck, who has since made Nicolas a mainstay in The Jeff Beck Group, carrying him on two world tours during the course of the last several years.
Requiem: A jazz and poetry commission commemorating the end of The First World War and subsequent conflicts across a century.

THE HAMISH STUART BAND FEATURING ‘MOLLY’ DUNCAN | SAX
Hamish & Molly are 2 of the founding members of the Average White Band! Probably best known for his work as the original lead singer/guitarist with The Average White Band, Hamish Stuart has had an illustrious career as both songwriter and performer. He has worked with the likes of Diana Ross, George Benson and Chaka Khan (for whom he wrote the No. 1 chart hit ‘Whatcha Gonna Do For Me’) culminating in six years with the Paul McCartney Band. Tonight Hamish will be appearing with his band that not only features regulars Jim Watson-keyboards, Adam Phillips-guitar, Steve Pearce-bass and Ian Thomas-drums but also includes Special Guest: Molly Duncan-sax. Hamish is very much musical “family” to us here and this gig is always a little “special”. A musical treat! It’s hard to exaggerate the impact the Average White Band made when they burst on to the international music scene in the early 1970s. Here was a group which sounded as if they might have emerged straight from Detroit or the inner recesses of Berry Gordy’s imagination at the heart of Tamla Motown. They wrote funk-infused slabs of rhythm, songs which had more hooks than a hotel coat rack, and when “Pick Up the Pieces” soared to the top of the charts in America, it became an anthem which has been played all over the globe. What was remarkable about the AWB – and remains so for those of us who watched their occasional performances on Top of the Pops – was that these dudes came from such groove-laced places as…er well, Perth, Dundee and Glasgow!

GETZ - A MUSICAL PORTRAIT CHRIS INGHAM QUARTET
CHRIS INGHAM piano MARK CROOKS tenor saxophone ARNIE SOMOGYI bass GEORGE DOUBLE drums From the late 1940s to the early 1990s, tenor saxophonist Stan Getz was one of the great, individual instrumental artists in jazz. As jazz itself went through many phases, Getz as a player was remarkably consistent, producing album after album of poetic, swinging music. While his accompaniments were elaborately varied, Getz’s playing was always unmistakable, characterised by his singing, luminescent tone, his unmatched facility for elegance, passion and lyricism and an almost supernatural melodic creativity.

During this period Karen also worked hard to establish her own band, recording the first of five albums under her own name and touring at festivals and jazz clubs. 04 Wednesday - 20:30 - 23:00 Hopkins / Hammond Trio Matt Hopkins - guitar Scott Hammond - drums Ruth Hammond - Organ
The classic jazz formation known as the ‘Organ Trio’ may be a new concept to you. If so, you will probably be delighted to know that it is not three organs but rather one organ (usually a Hammond organ), guitar and drums - three instruments that blend together to create a unique sound that can be very subtle or very powerful and everything in between. Formed on a rare sunny day in Bristol, UK in 2016, this organ trio knew they were on to a winner after the first tune they played together. There is an undeniable chemistry between the three of them that is evident in everything they play. This could be well known jazz standards, tunes by the likes of John Scofield and Pat Metheny or the trio’s own compositions. Adult Full £12.50 : Jazzland Member 2019 £10 : Students £7

DANIEL JOHN MARTIN WITH THE DAVE COTTLE TRIO
Daniel John Martin: Jazz Violin and Vocals. A unique and charismatic performer and one of the most talented and sought after violinists of his generation, Daniel’s singing, swinging violin has joined such world Gypsy guitar greats as Boulou Ferre, Angelo DeBarre and Romane amongst many others. Born in the UK, spending his childhood in Africa, He studied violin at Parisian conservatoires, where jazz became his first love. His sources of inspiration include Stephane Grappelli, Stuff Smith, Art Pepper and Cannonball Adderley. Born just outside Manchester to a British mother and French father, followed by formative years in Africa (Senegal and then South Africa), and finally settling in Paris in his late teens, Daniel John Martin knows more than a little about the nomadic life. Was this what eventually drew his destiny to the gypsy jazz music founded by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli in the 1930s, or was it simply a natural path taken with the instrument he readily confesses he is “totally mad about” perhaps a little of both. Starting on the violin aged six, Daniel has nurtured a lifelong obsession with the instrument, admitting that when he’s not practising, he can often be found hanging out with modern luthiers learning more about the violin’s workings and anything new on offer: “I love playing on modern instruments and staying up to date with everything that’s available to push the boundaries of the sound. It’s why I’m such a fan of the Wittner fine-tune pegs and other accessories that allow me the freedom to do this.”
