EDITOR’S VIEW It’s heartening that more than half of Birmingham’s MPs will either reject the pay rise or give it to local charities
normally fight shy of writing about politics – for two reasons. First, even if you are arguing a sensible case about public services or spending or something equally important, someone, somewhere will always accuse you of having a ‘hidden agenda’. Second, politics and politicians (with the exception of Boris!) are pretty dull. I’m making an exception this month over the subject of MPs’ pay – and particularly the 10 per cent rise they’ve just been awarded by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority. Now, I’m sure our local MPs are all doing a top-notch job (maybe), but really, come on… how can anyone justify this kind of increase when the rest of us have seen our wages frozen for years and are only now beginning to watch them creep up by one or two per cent? Even if you believe that MPs have been historically underpaid, any good marketing person would be quick to point out that this is just plain bad PR for politicians already held in pretty low esteem. Mind you, it’s heartening to learn that more than half of Birmingham’s MPs have said that they will either reject the rise or give the increase to local charities. Quite right too!

WOLF
THE BIG SOFT
Simon Webbe of boy band Blue comes home to Brum and tells David Johns about growing up on ‘his’ street, stopping thieves nicking car stereos, and the drama teacher who inspired him to fame imon Webbe doesn’t come across as a big, bad wolf. In fact he seems the complete opposite – a bit of a big softie at heart. “Yes, I suppose I am like that most of the time, but everyone has a dark side that they like to be able to show now and then,” he says. Just how dark Simon truly can be will be revealed when he huffs and puffs and tries to blow the house down in the new production of the family musical The 3 Little Pigs at Birmingham Town Hall. The performer best known for being a member of the boy band Blue is the show’s ‘baddie’ – and he’s loving every minute of it. The false ears, the shaggy costume... the lot!
S
CORRIDORS OF LEARNING He’s also loving the fact that he’s coming home to Brum, where he grew up from the age of six until he was 19. “My first ever stage appearance was actually at Town Hall back in 1994 when I was the lead in a play with an outside production with my school, so I’ve kind of come full circle you could say.” Although born in Manchester, Simon is a true Midlands lad with his roots firmly in the city. “I’m very proud to be a Birmingham boy,” he says. So much so that when we caught up with him, he’d just been on a visit to one of his old schools, Holy Trinity in Small Heath. “Walking along the painted corridors and past the classrooms, it felt like only yesterday when I was going to school there. My favourite teacher of all time, drama teacher Mrs Jones, was the

one who always encouraged me to do drama. In fact when I first joined Blue, she was a bit upset that I was doing music rather than something in performing arts. She told me: ‘You’re better than that’. “It was great to go back though, the kids gave me a great reception. I know everyone talks about giving something back, but if I can inspire just one or two of the kids to go on and do something really great, outside of their normal comfort zone, that’d be so good. When they saw me turn up with the bodyguard and the Porsche, they were kind of like ‘Wow’. I want them to know they can have all that too if they really want it and work for it.” Facing challenges and trying new things is something Simon believes in. As well as being part of Blue and a successful solo artist, he’s appeared in a number of West End musicals. He’s also known to millions from I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here

and Strictly Come Dancing, where he was runner-up in the final and winner of the subsequent Strictly arena tour. “I’ve got the glitterball in pride of place at home,” he says. Fans will remember how Simon went from timid dancer with two left feet to confident king of the ballroom floor and master of the meanest Argentine Tango ever seen on TV. “Strictly is something I will never forget. It’s part of my experience, but now I’m moving on to lots of other exciting things, on my own and with the band.” Simon grew up on St Andrew’s Street, right next door to Birmingham City football ground. KEEPING MUM HAPPY On match days, he and his mates earned some pocket money by charging fans to look after their cars parked on the road and “make sure the stereos weren’t pinched”. He says: “The cars were on my street – and no one and nothing was going to come to any harm on my street. “I enjoyed growing up in Birmingham, first at St Andrew’s School, then George Dixon and finally at Holy Trinity. I was very privileged, I had a relatively normal childhood. My mum would worry if you weren’t home indoors by eight or nine in the evening. It’s all a bit different for kids these days…” As well as drama, football featured large in Simon’s loves – he played at district and county levels before having trials at Birmingham and Aston Villa. “I still come back to Birmingham as often as I can, though I’d like it to be more often if I had the time,” says Simon. “My daughter is here and so are all my old school friends. I just love the place…” I The 3 Little Pigs is at Town Hall from 28 July to 2 August. More details at www.thsh.co.uk

FULL SPEED AHEAD How a £9.5m facelift has injected new pride, passion and panache into one of the world’s great transport collections hen Gary Hall first came to Coventry he recalls the whole city “felt a bit doom and gloom” about what had happened to its motor industry over the years. “The place seemed really down,” he says. “But when I looked around the Transport Museum for the first time it struck me what a fantastic, exciting story there was to tell and what a terrific future the place had.” That was back in 2007 after Gary had given up life in the aviation and airports business and become Coventry Transport Museum’s chief executive. “I had a vision of what the museum could be, and now these years later we’ve finally realised that.” The museum relaunched in June with a completely new look, layout and exhibits after a massive facelift

which aims to lift visitor numbers from just over 400,000 a year to topping half a million… and beyond. The new place certainly looks the part. Inside it’s slick, smart, stylish and bang up to date with what visitors expect today. In fact the word ‘museum’ somehow feels out of place – it’s more of ‘an experience’ which guides you through the city’s past, present and future with real panache and pride. WORLD LEADER As well as housing the biggest collection of British transport in the world, it is one of only two that tells the story of transport made in that city – the other is Ford’s heritage centre in Detroit. And as Gary is quick to point out, that only features one make while

Coventry boasts a host of the greatestever manufacturers. “The museum is now firmly at the forefront of the world stage,” said Gary. “The old museum had many fine elements and qualities but was a bit random in how they were displayed and explained to the public. Now it guides people through the story of the amazing history and ties Coventry has with the motor industry and transport and also tells the story of the city itself. It’s an engaging and exciting experience for the visitor.” Engagement is key to what Gary and his team are trying to achieve – whether it’s with regular visitors

coming through the doors or by the programme with local schools and links to Coventry and Warwick Universities. “The story in the new museum starts as it should from the beginning,” he explained, “with the cycle industry and works its way through motorcycles, cars and all the other vehicles, both in peacetime and wartime, that are synonymous with the city, and then on to what is coming in the future.” The project to make the museum a must-see free attraction for the Midlands took 15 months to complete at a cost of £9.5million. FUTURE PIONEERS The collection includes the world’s fastest cars Thrust SSC and Thrust 2 as well as the oldest vehicle manufactured in the city and more than 3,000 model toy cars. Latest technology has been introduced to bring to life Coventry’s war effort in the Blitz Experience, while the Future Pioneers section showcases design and innovation from a host of local companies at the forefront of the transport and automotive industry. “There are over 1,000 local companies all making niche products for transport,” said Gary. “It is important that we reflect that and show our visitors what a thriving and innovative city and region we have.” The museum opened in 1980 when the road transport collection outgrew the space it occupied in the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum. The museum’s

current collection of vehicles includes more than 550 cars – from the early days of the first motorised vehicle to the latest F1 race machines – motorcycles and bicycles and 25,000 models. It’s all managed by the Culture Coventry charitable trust formed in 2013 and bringing together four of Coventry’s finest museums and visitor attractions – the Transport Museum, Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, the Lunt Roman Fort (a fully excavated and partially reconstructed turf and timber fort), and the Priory Visitor Centre, where you can explore the excavated remains of Coventry’s first cathedral. The Culture Coventry attractions are visited by more than 800,000 people from around the world each year. Despite the economic challenges facing galleries and museums of all shapes and sizes across the country, Coventry Transport Museum is in the best shape of its 30-year history. “We’ve had lots of really positive feedback about the new features,” said Gary. “A number of people have told me that what we have created is truly worldleading and we are very proud of that as a team, a museum and a city.” I

BEN TERNENT As Opus celebrates its tenth birthday, head chef Ben Ternent tells us what makes him tick and how he still craves his mum’s moussaka Tell us about your cooking If I had to put a name to my style I’d call it simple, modern British. I use seasonal produce – local where possible. We’re quite lucky in Birmingham with beautiful local vegetables and meat. We draw from the surrounding counties and have sourced some great producers.
evolving – new techniques, flavours, ingredients and I’m inspired by lots of things – experiences, eating out, other chefs.
How did you become a chef?
What do you eat when at home? I’m not at home as much as I’d like, but a BBQ with top-notch free range meat would be great. Having said that, my girlfriend is a veggie so I’ve been experimenting with a lot of vegetarian dishes lately.
My mum’s a great cook and always made sure we had home cooked food on the table. I still crave her moussaka! I was always into food at high school and followed that with three years at UCB or the College of Food as it was then. I spent a year in the States when I was 19 on a placement and then joined Opus where I’ve been for 10 years. Cooking is constantly
Who’s the best chef in the world and why? And who’s the best in Brum? I can’t pinpoint one chef as they all have different attributes. In Brum I’d say my brigade at Opus is the best. You need such teamwork in the kitchen to be successful and they are brilliant.

CHEF’S CORNER
Food heaven and food hell? Heaven would be something fresh out of the sea – scallops or John Dory. Hell would be something too offal-y. Heart, liver, kidneys – it’s all just too strong for my palate. What’s the most unusual thing you’ve eaten? A friend of mine has a Japanese girlfriend and she made a traditional dish called Natto which is basically fermented soy beans – it was just horrible. If you weren’t a chef, what would you be? My grandad was in the building trade and I used to go round the site with him, so probably a brickie. Is the customer always right? Yes is the short answer! Whether we agree or not is another matter…
What do you recommend from this evening’s menu? Ox tongue terrine with parmesan, caper berries and horseradish. I
What was your favourite food as a kid? Did I mention my mum’s moussaka? It’s unbeatable. She also made a great lasagne. Real comfort food. Share a cooking tip For an easy Sunday brunch, prep your poached eggs the day before. Boil a pan of water and add a good splash of red wine vinegar. Bring to rolling boil and crack four eggs at a time; boil for 3 minutes, 20 seconds. Lift out into ice water. Once cool, trim off the excess white to shape a beautiful round poached egg. Store covered in fridge until ready the next day. When ready to serve up your breakfast/brunch, reheat for one minute in boiling water.

RESTAURANT REVIEW
MOORINGS AT MYTON Myton Road, Leamington Spa, Warwickshire CV31 3NY. tel: 01926 425043 www.themoorings.co.uk e had a bit of a false start on our trip to The Moorings at Myton as we watched our broken car being towed away from the office. The day can only get better we told ourselves in a forced glass half full fashion. Onwards and upwards we plumped for the trusty old Golf and headed to what’s been voted Pub of the Year. As well as its impressive accolade, The Moorings is sister to one of our favourite haunts, The Forest at Feckenham and former Pub of the Year, The Stag at Offchurch, so we were expecting a great lunch sure to distract from the dodgy motor. Just off a roundabout and near a retail park the approach to the pub isn’t pretty, but once parked it’s another story. There’s a gorgeous canal side terrace from which the retail park and busy road are completely out of sight and mind. As the name suggests there’s a distinctly nautical vibe, but not in a twee way. It’s classic and grown up – all dark wood, sculptures and cool prints. It’s pretty big and for a weekday lunch-time trade was good. On a sunny day I imagine the terrace pulls in the crowds, but the weather was pretty bleak for our visit and no one braved the drizzle. Ensconced cosily indoors, we nibbled some welcome olives and warm bread while we weighed up the options. The menu was one of those
W

perfectly formed tomes – not too big, not too small and full of dishes we’d have been happy to chomp our way through.
PICKLED EXPERIMENT The specials were appealing too, from which JC chose a starter of sardines served with a salad that featured slices of vibrant pink pickled radish. Neither of us had tried it before, but would happily again. It was delicious. Apparently the chef had been experimenting with pickling and this was definitely a keeper. Served with a punchy dressing including capers and lemon the whole thing was summery, fresh and felt quite virtuous. By contrast, while my starter was just as tasty it was definitely not virtuous! The twice-baked Stinking Bishop soufflé with cider cream and pea shoot salad was rich and decadent with matchsticks of pear that added a nice sweetness. It looked pretty as a picture too.

RESTAURANT REVIEW
The mains were tough to choose from. I took manager Richard’s advice and went for a pan fried stone bass with black truffle gnocchi, clams, pancetta, peas and cider sauce. What’s not to love here? Bass, clams, salty bacon and sweet peas – lovely. The cider sauce was delicious and the truffle gnocchi which admittedly I’d been a bit unenthusiastic about was really nice. I could have done with less of it, but it was great. I’ve recently embraced Instagram, so I’m one of those annoying folk that snap their food in restaurants. This dish made the grade and was uploaded quick smart to much admiration. JC tucked into Jimmy Butler’s free range pork belly with celeriac remoulade, spiced plums and Madeira jus. The pork belly was soft and melting, the sauce was tasty and there was a thin, crisp slice of crackling on the side which raised a big grin. JC was a bit non-plus with the plums,

but having said that the dish was devoured with much enthusiasm accompanied by a large fruity glass of La Troubadour.
MINIATURE SWEETS The actual dessert menu sounded scrumptious, but we opted for the ‘Coffee with a Little Sweet’ list. I ordered the mini double chocolate brownie and JC a sliver of BrillatSavarin cheesecake both served with top notch coffee. Both were perfect morsels of loveliness that polished off the meal nicely. To win Pub of the Year is no easy feat. It’s a national title with mystery diners and various hoops to jump through. The whole package needs to be right and crucially consistent. We found it ticked all of the boxes that would make us come back time and again. Who cares about the car… I

Birmingham has a lively and buzzing bar and restaurant scene. Here, we present our insider guide to what’s going on in your city’s eateries and drinking dens STAR-STRUCK MATT ON THE MOVE Matt Cheal, head chef at Michelin-starred Simpsons in Edgbaston, is leaving after 16 years to open his own restaurant. The 34-yearold has taken over what was formerly Edmunds in Henley-in-Arden. Matt’s final day at Simpsons will be Sunday 9 August. Cheal’s of Henley will open after a full refurb in mid-September.
ALL CHANGE AT THE ALMANACK The Almanack in Kenilworth has re-opened with a smart new look and menu from award-winning head chef Rob Hartwell – offering everything for a great gastro night out. Inside the look is dramatic with dark teal walls offset by pale greys and flashes of pillar box red, intricate metal screening and swish new mesh bar lighting.
CENTRE TEAM ARE BRITAIN’S BEST The catering team at the Heritage Motor Centre has been crowned Britain’s Best Brigade in a public vote to find the UK’s hardest working kitchen. The team at the museum and fine dining conference centre, saw off seven other regional finalists after nearly 1,000 votes were cast in Essential Cuisine’s nationwide competition.
CURTAIN UP ON RSC’S FOODIE REVAMP The Royal Shakespeare Company’s executive chef Will Leigh is spearheading a new food offering and dining space at the Stratfordupon-Avon theatre. Will is leading the RSC’s Rooftop Restaurant, Riverside Cafe and Circle Bar. Originally a space for drinks only, the Circle Bar will now offer visitors four different sharing platters in an intimate atmosphere.
TASTE OF SPAIN AT BENNETTS HILL Amantia, Birmingham’s new contemporary Spanish and Mediterranean bar and restaurant on Bennetts Hill has opened with a VIP launch evening. Owner Marta Retenaga said: “Our ambition is to serve the city’s most sensational Spanish cuisine and we are very proud to make every dish in our kitchens each day using authentic, imported produce from all over Spain.”
SAN CARLO LAUNCHES NEW MENU San Carlo Italian restaurant in Temple Street has launched a new menu using the finest produce flown in from the markets of Milan. COCKTAIL OF THE MONTH
Bubblegumtini A yankee-doodle creation that tastes just dandy ne or two select bars in New York are famous for mixing bubblegum-based drinks – hardly surprising when you think that the Yanks gave the world this ultra sweet and sticky confectionery in the first place! The Big Apple mixologists actually use bubblegum cut up and fermented overnight in vodka to make their creations. We’re pleased to say that this signature cocktail from the magic mixers at Aluna is simpler to deliver. Devised by general manager Yen-ting Mui it tastes rather fine too.

BROWNS 7 Spiceal Street, St Martins Square, Birmingham, B5 4BH. Tel: 0121 643 8708 www.browns-restaurants.co.uk unchtime in the school holidays and what to do? With seven weeks to fill this could be a regular dilemma when we’re out and about in Brum. Not in the mood for a typically child-friendly venue (you know the ones) and not forward-thinking enough to have packed a picnic, we thought we’d suss out Browns. While the children’s menu is perfectly good, the grown-up one is particularly appealing and the wine list is a cracking mix. (Well, it was after midday and seven weeks is a long time!) We sat on a high table with a golden sheen, cut crystal glasses and crisp white napkins – all very civilised. The usual kiddie fare features on the menu and not surprisingly my two plumped for garlic bread followed by burgers. They happily devoured the garlic bread while downing pineapple juice and mango smoothies. The burgers were spot on, quality meat and perfectly moist. The chips had been salted in the kitchen a bit heavy-handedly for my liking, but the kids didn’t mind one jot. Apparently I’m ‘soooo serious about salt.’ That told me. I chose asparagus with prosciutto and a poached egg with hollandaise sauce to start which was rich and oozing. The other half emerged from being engrossed in the wine list and ordered pea and mint soup from the specials which was lively and fresh served with a hunk of warm bread. On the wine front I enjoyed a cold glass of Picpoul de Pinet while inspired by the Ashes, he sipped the Googly Chardonnay.

My main of pan fried cod with shrimp butter, new potatoes and spinach was delicious, laced with capers of which I’m a fan. The portion was quite hefty and there were a handful of tatties going spare. The other half followed the recommendation of our attentive waitress, Agata which was duo of lamb. A mini shepherd’s pie served in a ramekin alongside a couple of juicy cutlets with a sticky, rich sauce was really tasty. We could have lived without pudding, but the kids were keen – any excuse. A chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream rolled in honeycomb was the youngest’s dream dessert and a fruit salad with yoghurt and shoots of popcorn for the eldest was fresh and light. (Still not sure what shoots of popcorn are even having eaten them.) The grown-ups shared salted caramel profiteroles – properly indulgent and perfect for two. We left lunch feeling happy and sated, but given it was the first day of the holidays I had a sinking feeling we may have peaked too soon. I

BUBBLE TOPS Wondering what’s the perfect fizz for a summer wedding, al fresco party or just chilling out? Rob Price picks the best
e Brits love sparkling wine, consuming around 108 million bottles per year. That’s about two per adult, per year. I must be drinking someone else’s share! And we do have a lot of choice… Champagne, Cava, Crémant, Prosecco, Asti and of course English Sparkling wine – plus many others! (We must come up with a better name for English sparkling wine. I’ve read that the French have named it Crémant Anglaise. Surely we can do better? Let me know.)
W
The most popular fizz is Prosecco from North East Italy. It’s made in a big tank using a grape called Glera and, with no ageing requirements, it’s light, fruity, and inexpensive. Its cousin Asti, from neighbouring North West Italy, is similarly tank fermented and equally good value. While Asti is always sweet, Prosecco tends to be dry or off dry. Both are fairly light on the alcohol front and make a great lunchtime or aperitif drink. TEXTURE AND DEPTH Cava and Champagne are made (second fermentation) in a bottle and aged for a minimum period of time. And it’s this time – nine months for Cava and 15 months for NV (non-vintage) Champagne – that gives these two sparklers a little more texture and depth. Champagne in particular because of more extended maturation, gains wonderful bread biscuit and brioche aromas as the
28 birmingham living
yeast goes to work in the small confines of a bottle. Crémant is a sparkling wine from France, anywhere from France, that’s not Champagne. It’s aged for only nine months so while generally it doesn’t have the complexity of Champagne it is a high quality fizz that also has the benefit of being excellent value for money.
NUTTY AND YEASTY And what about England? Our (very) cool climate is ideally suited to producing premium sparkling wines. In fact we make some fantastic award-winning fizz with our best cuvees beating Champagne in a number of blind tasting competitions. There are no rules that determine how we should make our sparkling wine but we tend to copy the Champagne method, including using the same grapes, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier. We also have no ageing requirements but it also tends to be along similar to non-vintage Champagne. What about vintage Champagne? This Champagne comes from a single year (vintage) and should always be from the best years. Vintage Champagne has to be aged for a minimum of three years so is wonderfully nutty, yeasty and complex. So which should you choose? Well they are all good, so I’ve selected four brilliant examples that will wow you. I

ROB’S FOUR TO TRY Best non-vintage Champagne
Below the £50 barrier, Taittinger Reserve Brut. A blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier wines from over 35 different vineyards and vintages matured to perfection. Known for its consistently excellent quality. Quite widely available, including the major supermarkets, for between £27 and £36.
Best English sparkling wine Ridgeview wine estate in Sussex only makes sparkling wine and the whole range is good, but the standout is Ridgeview’s Rose de Noirs. A delicate rose fizz, fine bubbles with summer fruits, fantastic texture and length. Buy direct from Ridgeview, £32.95/bottle.
Best value for money fizz Cono Sur Brut is from Chile’s Bio Bio region and made with the same grapes as Champagne. Delicate aromas of citrus, white flowers, dried fruits and a slight honeyed note. Juicy, fruity and crisp. Widely available (Underwoods, Slurp, Connolly’s and Tesco) £8 to £10/bottle.
Best Prosecco NV Nino Franco Prosecco di Valdobiaddene Brut, a nonvintage Prosecco. Medium body, dry, and very refreshing, with apple and pear. Brilliant on a warm summer’s evening or during lunch. From Millesima online, great value at £13.50/bottle.

y rights we should be gracing our Style pages with winter warmers already, but rules are meant to be broken are they not? It might be drizzling as we write, but we’re not ready to kiss goodbye to summer just yet, so we’re embracing unabashed head to toe crisp white. DKNY, Caroline Herrera and Victoria Beckham sent all white ensembles down the runway for this season and we haven’t looked back. And we’re not talking beach gear either. Yes we all love a bit of broderie anglaise and a flowing kaftan, but this is more than a holiday romance. Take a pair of crisp flared trousers like those pictured on page 32 from Debenhams. Smart enough for the office, yet teamed with a killer heel they’re edgy enough to take you through a night out.

FLIRTY FIFTIES A white dress screams confidence none more so than Yumi’s mixed lace broderie version. Cute, relaxed and flattering it’s a steal. Try adding a white brogue for instant cool. We like the Hobbs version (pictured on page 33). A Fifties-inspired flirty skirt works for any event – picnic in the park, boardroom, friend’s christening. Jaeger has a particularly good one. There are a couple of things to consider before donning all white though, not least

underwear. This needs to be spot on in order to make things work and we agree that smooth and nude is best. We asked our friends at Sipsey Lingerie in Solihull to pick their best set to work under all white and they came up with this Mademoiselle by Chantelle nude plain brief and bra which will be practically invisible (pictured on page 34). The other thing to consider is that a tan really does help carry off white. We succumbed to St Tropez’s advertising bombardment and bought the In Shower Gradual Tan. It works a treat people – no mess, no streaks and subtle. I WHITE GOLD Sandals £69, La Redoute

HEALTH
IN THE
SWIM
How swimming can help you to lose weight, build muscle and feel great ummer is here, the lidos are opened and the pools are filling up. It’s time to get swimming. Widely regarded as one of the most enjoyable forms of exercise, swimming is also a fantastic and fun way to help improve your heart rate and blood flow and maintain a healthy weight. But the health benefits don’t just end there. Here’s just a few reasons why you should spend large parts of this summer submerged.
S
Increased Muscle Tone and Strength As water is much denser than air, swimming is a far more effective way of toning your muscles than any other form of cardiovascular exercise. When you swim you get the cardio part of your work-out while also working on an even body tone. Water provides a certain amount of extra resistance, which has a similar effect as using a light weight on a resistance machine at the gym. Healthy heart In addition to helping tone up pecs, triceps and quads, swimming also improves the most important muscle in our bodies – the heart. As an aerobic exercise, it serves to strengthen the heart, not only helping it to become larger, but making it more efficient in pumping, which leads to better blood flow throughout your body. This can help reduce the risk of coronary heart disease by as much as 40 per cent. Reduced blood pressure and cholesterol levels Studies have shown that swimming for 30 minutes at least three times a week can significantly lower your blood pressure. One study found that resting heart rate was considerably lowered after just 10 weeks of regular swimming. Plus, swimming for half an hour or longer helps reduce the levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) in your blood while raising the levels of HDL – good cholesterol.
august 2015
Lower blood sugar levels Swimming for at least half-an-hour three to four times a week, combined with eating a balanced low-glycaemic index (GI) diet, has been shown to control blood sugar levels, according to the Amateur Swimming Association, the English national governing body for swimming. Low-impact When submerged in water, the human body automatically becomes lighter and because around 90 per cent of your body’s weight is buoyant when you swim there is less strain placed on bones, joints and muscles. This makes it a fantastic exercise for people with injuries, who may be overweight or suffer from arthritis. Flexibility Unlike exercise machines in a gym that tend to isolate one body part at a time, swimming allows you to use a lot of muscles at the same time. The arms move in wide arcs, the hips are engaged as the legs scissor through the water, and the head and spine twist from side to side. Helps manage weight Swimming breaststroke for 30 minutes will burn approximately 400Kcal, depending on your weight and speed. That beats walking, cycling and even running at 6mph, which burns 300Kcal. Improved sleep People who take vigorous exercise, such as swimming, are almost twice as likely as non-exercisers to have a good night’s sleep. They are also the least likely to report sleep problems, like waking up too early or having difficulty falling asleep. This means you’ll be more likely to concentrate better, look more attractive and live longer. I

eorge Clark has thrust ‘sheds’ into the limelight on Channel 4’s Shed of the Year, a bizarrely absorbing programme which sees shed owners pitted against one another in various categories. These are no ordinary sheds though. There are pubs, clubs, floating summerhouses, state-of-the-art constructions, eco builds and a shed that doubles as a miniature train. You get the drift. The common theme though is that these garden constructions are hideaways, sanctuaries and beloved. PRINCESS Jewellery expert Liz Winnicott looks into the birthstone of the Royal Family’s new arrival he news of the birth of Princess Charlotte of Cambridge captivated the world. Her official birthstone is the radiant green emerald, a jewel believed to promise good luck and represent love and beauty. Emeralds are delicate stones and despite their lustrous colour, almost always possess inclusions. They can be incredibly difficult to cut which is the reason why many are either shaped and polished, known as cabochon, or rectangular and facet cut, known as step or emerald cut. Within great granny’s jewellery box Princess Charlotte will find a rather significant set of jewels, steeped in Royal history. This collection is not only made up of Charlotte’s birthstone but rather appropriately named the Cambridge Emeralds. It consists of around 40 cabochon emeralds acquired in 1818 by Augusta of Hesse-Kassel, the Duchess of Cambridge and grandmother to Queen Mary, who won them in a charity lottery in Frankfurt. The Duchess set some of the stones into a pair of earrings and a necklace which she then bequeathed through the family. Two generations later they fell into the hands of Prince Francis of Teck, known as Frank, who was something of a scoundrel. A bachelor who liked to gamble, he took a shine to Nellie, Countess of
T
Kilmorey – the former mistress of King Edward VII –– and upon his sudden death in 1910, bequeathed her the family emeralds. His sister Queen Mary was horrified and immediately set about ‘obtaining’ the jewels. There is much rumour and gossip attached to her methods. One story claims she paid £10,000 for their return, the equivalent of £800,000 today. Once safely back in the Royal collection, Queen Mary wasted no time in putting the emeralds to good use, commissioning Garrards to design and create a parure of jewellery known as the Delhi Durbar in 1911, comprising of a tiara, necklace, stomacher, brooch and earrings.
RUMOUR AND GOSSIP Yet the story does not end there. In 1921, unable to resist adding to her already vast jewellery collection, Queen Mary bought the stunning Grand Duchess Vladimir tiara. It was made for the aunt of Tsar Nicholas II who fled St Petersburg shortly before the revolution in 1918. It has 15 intertwined diamond circles from which hang 15 pendant teardrop pearls. Unfortunately, on its way back from Russia it suffered some damage and needed a little repair. While in the workshop, Queen Mary instructed the jewellers to make a few alterations. As an alternative to the original pearls, she added 15 interchangeable cabochon emeralds, 10 taken from the Delhi Durbar and five more from the Cambridge collection. Today it is a favourite of the Queen – but the question is, who will inherit it next? I Liz Winnicott is consultant valuer and auctioneer at West Midlands auctioneers Fieldings. She specialises in silver and jewellery.

THE PERFECT GETAWAY CAR Mazda has reinvented its iconic MX-5 two-seater, giving it meaner looks, even sharper handling and some proper luggage space too, says Sue Cooke re you packing your bags and driving off for a well-earned break this August? Whether it’s for a week, a weekend or just a night, it makes a lot of sense to get your car serviced. Research by the Good Garage Scheme has found that more than half (54 per cent) of drivers say they won’t have their cars checked over before their next long journey – which seems crazy to me as the holiday season is the last time you want to risk hitting trouble on the extra-busy roads. Mind you, if you’ve got a few spare pound notes lying around you could skip the service altogether and just check out the new arrival in Mazda dealerships at the end of the month. The iconic summer two-seater car, reminiscent of romantic dreamy vacations has beefed up its presence for 2015. The fourth generation MX-5 has a brawny exterior with a more muscular aggressive stance which is definitely attention-grabbing.

steering wheel feel is precise, performance is instant and the front-engine, rear wheel drive has handling and cornering which provokes pure driving exhilaration. The all-new 2015 sports car keeps its fun-to-drive character but adds more comfort, technology, safety features and refinement. It’s lighter than its predecessor and shorter and wider, but sits lower to the ground. My friend and her husband drove around Europe for three weeks last year in her MX-5 which proved an interesting and frustrating challenge due to the compromised luggage space. She will be thankful to read that this new model has much better boot and cabin space. With Mazda’s SKYACTIV-G technology both performance and economy are improved on both the 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre petrol engines. I drove the former which has 131 PS and found the gutsy engine needed a few easy but slick gear changes. (The more powerful 2.0-litre with 160 PS costs £850 more but CO2 emissions are increased so the owner pays more road tax.) The MX-5 is such an easy car to drive with

YOUNG, GIFTED & BRUMMIE
fter graduating from the University of Birmingham, Yorkshire born Kate Roberts saw no reason to leave the city and began her teaching career at George Salter School in West Bromwich four years ago. Of Birmingham Kate said: “It’s a great city. There’s so much going on and if you’re into sport Birmingham is brilliant. I fell in love with the school too.” George Salter School is in a deprived area and Kate and the rest of the team face the challenges that come with that every day, but through sport the pupils and local teenagers are getting engaged and active. Kate works in the Community Department and part of that role is to run the Street Games programme which offers eight sessions of sport per week to all local teenagers. Kate said: “It’s an unthreatening informal environment and crucially all of the sessions are either free or cost £1.” The Friday evening football session is particularly good. “Teenagers who would normally be hanging around the school on a Friday night are now playing sport instead.” There’s an average of 20 youngsters per session, so 150-plus teens per week are benefitting from the scheme. The youngsters can come and take part for 10 minutes or a whole session. It’s very flexible. Kate said: “Some of the youngsters who have come to Street Games have had little or no direction. Many then go on to volunteer and realise that the younger kids look up to them. They learn to communicate and how to be organised.” Fifteen of the volunteers have gone on to study for coaching qualifications that enable them to go on and forge a career.

Quite often kids come along for the social element and then develop a love of a sport. There have been some talented teens among the participants too. “The aim wasn’t to find superstars of tomorrow, but we have uncovered some very able youngsters who’ve gone on to talent academies and regional performance.” Netball is Kate’s big thing and as well as Street Games, she started West Bromwich Netball Club with a friend which has become the most successful regional club in the West Midlands with the U14 and U16 teams coming second in the national finals in Newcastle making them the best state school in the country. Kate knocks on doors waking up the youngsters for training at the weekend and always travels with a boot full of sports gear she no longer needs to pass on to the team. The young people and fellow coaches nominated Kate behind her back for the Young Coach of the Year award, so it was a lovely surprise. Kate was chosen from nearly 1,000 nominations, but she’s quick to deflect the limelight. “The award is for the whole programme. It’s for everyone. This isn’t a job to me – I just love it. Watching the kids progressing is satisfying and rewarding.” Jane Ashworth OBE, CEO of StreetGames, said: “This shows the amazing impact Kate has had on the lives of young people in West Bromwich. Kate has worked tirelessly to bring sport into the community at the right time, to the right place, for the right price and in the right style.” If the kids didn’t have this focus where would they be? Kate said: “Realistically many of them would be facing unemployment with no direction.” I

WHAT BUSINESS NEEDS FROM BRUM Our cultural and hospitality offerings as a city are really impressive – so let’s find an effective way to promote that. We aren’t all about shopping!
Please introduce yourself I am Ann Tonks, managing director of a small, independent business which runs three dining/drinking venues in the Birmingham city centre – Opus at Cornwall Street restaurant, Bar Opus at One Snowhill and Café Opus at Ikon gallery. What does your company do? We run three very different types of venues that complement each other. They cater for a variety of markets from finer dining to casual café to a cocktail bar. Each has its own personality, but each is fuelled by a passion for market fresh. We are independent and ingredient-led.
”
How do you feel your clients see the city? Very positively. Birmingham is a great place to do business, and in the last two years there has been a return to confidence.
Does Birmingham offer any particular advantages as a destination for business? Huge advantages: There are highly effective, dynamic BIDS in the city (and the CBD in particular is a big supporter of business); it has a great programme of improving the public realm; it offers world class music, ballet and theatre and it has excellent universities and one of the best educational foundations for secondary schools in the country (King Edward Foundation).

Opus managing director Ann Tonks people who are knowledgeable about To become a city that embraces commerce food and drink and are hungry for quality and innovation. rather than fighting it – please reduce parking charges! What are your biggest gripes with it? I think that, no matter where you operate an SME in Britain today, there are challenges in obtaining finance, getting your voice heard, and competing with the all-tooubiquitous national and international chains. Too many landlords and developers are keen to take the easy route of signing up known chains. That is a key reason why we love operating in the Colmore Business District for two of our venues, because it has burgeoned with like-minded independent businesses.

If you had £1bn to spend on improving Brum what would you do with it? I would open the most spectacular, beautifully designed museum of our heritage proclaiming confidently that Birmingham, through its role in the Industrial Revolution and developing city government, invented the modern world. And I would love to see the city create a city centre food market to rival those in Barcelona and on the continent, focusing on the wonderful produce from around the British Isles. I

IN THE CITY Dan and James Neale shot to fame as part of Britain’s Got Talent family group, The Neales. We got their take on living and working in Brum TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF DN: I am a senior analyst at Deutsche Bank. The majority of my career in banking has been spent in cash equities and stock loan. At the beginning of the year something quite unbelievable happened… when my dad persuaded us to audition for Britain’s Got Talent! JN: I am a senior solicitor in the Birmingham offices of international law firm DWF LLP. HOW DO YOU GET INTO TOWN? DN: James and I both live on Newhall Street in the same building (in different flats!). He will tell you that I copied him, but I think he’s just jealous of the fact I got the same flat much cheaper. For me it’s a 10minute walk up the stunning Birmingham canal network and for James it’s a five-minute walk to DWF at One Snow Hill
for me (during working hours). Dan doesn’t do hot drinks. He will be found in the pub rather than a coffee shop! LUNCHTIME? DN: I recently had a great sandwich from Anderson & Hill in Great Western Arcade and for a treat it’s a chicken burrito from Habaneros. They do excellent Mexican food from a van outside House of Fraser! If I am with a client I normally choose Primitivos on Barwick Street. JN: And Bank in Brindleyplace is always a good shout… POWERWALKING? DN: Around St Paul’s Square and the JQ – that part of the city will always feel really special! JN: Bannatyne’s gym in Brindleyplace three or four times a week.
WHERE'S YOUR FAVOURITE PART HOW'S THE COMMUTE? OF THE CITY? JN: Fantastic – I never hit any JN: St Paul’s Square – not many cities Dan and James of The Neales traffic or have any issues finding a have such a beautiful area of land so parking spot! close to the centre of town. DN: Flawless (apart from when it rains). DN: The Hippodrome – it’s where The Neales’ first audition took place and 2,000 people gave us a standing IS BRUM A GOOD PLACE TO WORK IN? ovation – very emotional! DN: I love working (and playing) in Birmingham. More companies, especially in the banking sector, are realising AFTERWORK PINT? the vast talent we have in the city and are choosing to invest JN: The Pitcher & Piano in Brindleyplace on a Friday here. We have so much to be proud of and long may the evening. Fumo is also a nice spot that Dan, dad and I city continue to flourish. regularly go to for after work drinks. JN: People are what makes a city great – we have some great people who get huge enjoyment out of seeing the HOW CAN THE CITY BE MADE BETTER? region flourish. JN: With continual investment in the great talent and infrastructure. The regeneration of New Street station and COFFEE BREAK? new John Lewis store will showcase this further. Can’t wait JN: I’ve been told I make a great cuppa, but to see it! unfortunately I don’t drink the stuff – it’s usually just H2O DN: The new tram system will be a real positive too. I
