Likemanypeople,youmayhavedecidedthat afterindulgingandpossiblyoverspending duringChristmasandNewYear,Januaryis thetimetocutbackonwine.Youmaybereasoning thatreducingyourintakeoffermentedgrapeswilllead tobothahealthierbodyandwallet.Andlikemany, yourNewYear’sresolutionsmayincludeparticipating indryJanuary.

Researchsuggeststhat88percentofNewYear’s resolutionsfailwithinthefirsttwoweeksofJanuary.So, I’dliketopresentanalternativewhichmightputyouin the12percentofpeoplewhoactuallymakearesolution andsticktoit.Let’scallit,‘semi-dryJanuary’(pun intended!).Mypropositionisthatinsteadofcuttingout winealtogether,buybetterwine,butlessofit.

Letmeclarify.WhatIamsuggestingisinsteadof buyingtwobottlesofyourusualwine,buyonethat costsabitmore.So,two-timesthequalityforoneand-a-halftimestheprice!

Woulditsurpriseyoutoknowthatthe£10ofwine inyourweeklyshoponlyhasaround£2worthof wineinit?Factoringinthebottle,cork,label, shipping,duty,thesupermarket’sprofitmarginand VATinJanuary2025thatisroughlywhatthewine inyourbottlewillhavecosttoproduce.Butina£15 bottleofwine,thewineitworthabout£4.54–a216 percentincreaseinvalue.Andina£20wine,a300 percentincreaseinvalue.Likechocolate,typically thebetterthequalitythelongeritwilltaketo consumeandthelessyouneed.

However,somepeopleoftenfeelthattheycannot reallytastethequalitydifference.Oftenthisisbecause itnotattherighttemperature.Generally,whitewines tendtobeservedtoocoldandmayneedalittletimeto warmiftheyhavebeenchillinginthefridgepriorto serving.Withredwineswetendassume‘room temperature’isbest,butactuallysomewherebetween 12and18degreesisoptimal,withfullerbodiedwines beingtowardsthehigherend.

Decantingthewine

Anotherreason,especiallywithredwines,isthatwe don’tallowthewineto‘breathe’.Aeratingthewine helpstoreleasegassesbuiltupinthebottleandto enhancethefruitflavoursandsoftenthetannins.High qualitywinetendstoneedabitlongertoallowthisto happen.Thisisonethereasonsthatwedecantwine.
