A MERRY DANCE
So…whoknewMorrisdancewasatraditiongoing back75yearsinBrum?Noneitherdidwe,buta chatwiththecrewatJockeyMorrissoonsetus straight.Theclubiscelebratingitslandmarkanniversary thisyearintheonlywayitknowshow–withaspecial danceeventinBirminghamcitycentreon12October withguestsattendingfromacrosstheMidlands.Andas theclub’sSquire(that’sChairtotherestofus)Peter Austinsays:“Havinglotsoffun,too.”
JockeyMorriswasformedin1949andhasrepresented dancingandthecityofBirminghaminplacesasfarflung asFrance,Flanders,Cyprus,HollandandGermany,aswell asnearertohomehereintheUK.“Weliketokeepour nationalfolktraditionalivebothathomeandabroad,” explainedPeter.
Theclub’sfounderGwenJohnsonwasamemberofthe EnglishFolkDanceandSongSociety(EFDSS),andshe formedJockeyMorrisafterbecomingunimpressedwiththe standardofMorrisDancingingeneralandinBirmingham inparticular.Inspirationfortheclub’snamecamefrom JockeyRoad,SuttonColdfieldwhereGwenlived.The distinctiverosetteswornonmembers’kitsaretakenfromthe SuttonRosemotifandtheBlueBaldricksarefromthecolour associatedwiththeCityofBirmingham.

Therearemorethan600MorristeamsintheUKwith nearly18,000members.Aswithallformsofdance,thereare numeroustraditionalstepsandperformancestolearnand follow,butthatdoesn’tmeanMorrisisrigid.“AtJockey,we’ve addedourownandI’veevenwrittensomedancesmyself,” saidPeter,whoalsoservesassecretarytooneofthenational Morrisdancingorganisations.
