WhenBirmingham2022rolledaround,Amawasinitially disappointednottobecompeting.Shethoughthowspecial itwouldbetorecreatetheteam’ssuccessontheGoldCoast righthereinfrontofahomecrowd,butintheend,shewas pleasednottobeplaying.Itwasadifferentexperience,but Amawasinvolvedinawaythatallowedhertoenjoyitand soakupthemagnificenceofthecityinthatmagicfortnight.

Amasays:“Toplayathomeinthatenvironmentwould havebeenamazing.Iwasontheboardoftheorganising committee,soIfeltpartofit.Iwouldn’tchangeitnow.As anathleteyoudon’talwaysgettoattendtheopeningand closingceremoniesdependingonyourplayingandrecovery schedule.It’sessentiallysleep,eatandtrain.”Amahad mediaworkaroundtheGamesfortheBBCaswellasher organisingcommitteeroleandwasabletoimmerseherself intheatmosphere.Shesays:“Thefestivalthatranalongside thegamescelebratingtheartsaswellassportwas magnificentforthecity.”

INWARDINVESTMENT

PassionateaboutthelegacyoftheGames,Amaiskeento shoutdowntheargumentthatthathostingthemcontributed

tothefinancialfailuresofthecitycouncil,whichisblatantly untrue.ShesaysinwardinvestmentthankstotheGameshas beenhugeaswellasincreasedjobsandapprenticeships.She says:“Wefoughttokeep£70millionintheregionaswellas equipmentwhichhasgonetolocalschoolsandclubs.”She alsosaysthatit’stestamenttoBirminghamthatwealready hadfacilitiessodidn’tneedtostartfromscratch,suchas AlexanderStadium.

Ama’salsopassionateaboutgettingkidsintosportand recognisesthatwehaveaproblemnationally.Shesays:“Sport isseenasanadd-onwithPEonceortwice-a-week.Itshould almostbeasimportantasmathsorscience.Itenablesachildto besomuchmore,boostingphysicalaswellasmental wellbeing.Weneedtogivechildrentheopportunitytothrive.”

NEXTSTOP

WhileAmahasnaturallyfounditdifficultmovingon fromthenicheworldofprofessionalsport,she’sbusyand lovesthevarietyofhermanyroles,somesport-related,many not–globalheadofInclusionatBUPAforinstance.

IT’SWHATIDO

Ileadthegroundsteamthatlooksafterthe14-acre sitethatmakesupEdgbastonPrioryClub.Wehave32 tenniscourtsofvaryingsurfaces,aswellaslargeareas ofmanagedlawns,shrubbedsandborders,hedges, treesandseasonalflowerdisplays,allofwhichfalls undertheremitofourgroundsteam.Juneisprobably thebusiestperiod,whenwehosttheRothesay BirminghamClassicTenniseventonourgrasscourts. Preparationgoesonallyearbutit’snotunusualfor ourteamtowork100-hourweeksforatleastamonth aroundtheevent.

Professionally,therelationshipwehavewithHeartof BirminghamVocationalCollege(HBVC)reallystands out.Eightyearsago,westartedworkingwiththemto providesomeoccasionalworkexperienceonceaweek onthegroundsteam.Nowwehavesupportedinterns

learninginmultipledepartmentswithintheclub.Based onourrelationshipasaclub,Ihaveendedupwiththe privilegeofbeingthechairofgovernorsforthecollege, whichissomethingIfindmassivelyfulfilling.
